First, the authors or their translators clearly struggled with proper English vocabulary and syntax. At times the text was clunky, and the narrator struggled. Second, the narrator read in a monotone which I ultimately turned off—finishing the book silently....more

It remains one of my favorite Grisham novels. At the same time, he has become a more accomplished author with the ability to make interesting stories from commonplace events. Camino Island is a heist. Camino Winds is dominated by a hurricane. Camino Ghosts takes readers back to the courtroom.
This tale is part historical drama and part legal shenanigans with a dose of social conscience. The audio book is effectively read by Whoopi Goldberg. I enjoyed this third trip to Camino Island....more

It is very timely, but I expect Silva’s craftsmanlike work will read like a good cold war thriller for many. In this novel Gabriel serves only as the puppet-master.
Like most of Silva’s best works, the plot unfolds methodically, but with enough ambiguity to make the tale interesting. A strong addition to the series.
There is one caveat I feel compelled to note and that is the lingering presence of Ari Shamron and Adrian Carter. Both men first appeared in the Michael Osborn novels. It is time to retire these characters....more

I would strongly recommend that they be read together for a more complete picture of events....more

While I like the audible narration there are times when the tenor of the reading is broken by the reading edits. I assume this could have been improved by the director.

Set largely in the 1960s and 1970s the first third is designed as staging. It is well written, but other than the inevitability of confrontation among the friends a bit of a struggle for me. The pace picks up considerably with the arrival of Hurricane Camille.
The latter portion of the novel verges on melodrama as we encounter courtrooms, family contention, politics, murder and prison. Once again a Grisham character finds himself on death row.
If you like legal thrillers this will disappoint, but it is a terrific historical novel about the Gulf Coast....more
