While the artwork was brilliant, the story never did capture my attention. It is extremely informative in that it provides the reader with the history behind the transcontinental railroad; however, it just felt sort of jumbled and put together for the sake of being put together. I think I rated it this high simply because the artwork was extremely beautiful. I would recommend this for little ones who love trains. ...more

-The idea that we get to learn about their year at the academy through a yearbook. -We find out so much about characters that weren't previously introduced. -The friendship between all the characters. They've come a long way from the first volume. -Some of the artwork...not all of it. I didn't like some of the guest artists. -Maps played such an important role in this volume and I absolutely love her as a character.
Things I didn't like: -The fact that there were so many guest artists. -The stories didn't exactly flow together the way I thought they would have. -I wanted a little more of where we left off from the last volume. ...more

-It scared me in a way I didn't think was possible. I can't even begin to imagine what I would do if I was in Susannah's shoes. To be perfectly normal and then completely lose your mind is not something that is easy to deal with. -I loved her narrative of her experience and how it started small but then turned into this entirely bizarre experience. It literally made my skin crawl. -The technical side of this book was amazing. I mean I was absolutely drawn to all the psychological and medical terms that she used. I heard of some of them before, but this book definitely pushed me to do research of my own. -I loved the fact that she made us question the medical field in the sense that a lot of doctors are overworked and don't have the time to give each patient thorough examinations. It illustrates how so many diseases go unnoticed or become misdiagnosed. -I loved hearing about her recovery as much as I loved reading about the initial onset of the disease. It amazed me that her brain went through so much but was some how able to repair itself.
If you guys are definitely looking for a non-fiction book based in psychology I would definitely check this one out. ...more

I loved the exploration of all the families. The art work was amazing. It was a combination of photographs as the background and then illustrated characters in the foreground. The concept really made reading it all the more entertaining. What I loved most was the sense of humor in the book. It wasn’t that it was bad but I think that the main characters take a little bit too much responsibility. It didn’t seem to be a healthy way to discuss mental health. What I definitely loved most about this manga was the premise of the story. Suicide is a difficult topic for me to read about sometimes because of my own personal history with it. I loved the way Takano handled it in such a delicate manner. It's definitely a book that you should invest time in. The characters are all amazing and the aspect of their friendship is what drew to the book in the first place. I can't wait to do a full review of this manga...more

I absolutely adored Jacob and I loved how he continuously asked his mom for a dress because that's what he's most comfortable in. Let me start by saying that the premise for this book is ultimately amazing. The world is a version of earth set in the future; however, a "tear" in the universe allows creatures and "humans" from other worlds to come into this version of earth. As a result, children are implanted with devices to become defenders of the rift. All I can say is that is the most amazing concept that I have heard of in a long while. I'm not a huge science fiction fan, but for some reason the science aspects of this book were so easy to understand and I found myself getting totally absorbed in the world. Now lets move on to the parts of the book that I really really enjoyed.
In the beginning it was hard to relate to Ryn as a character; however, after reading through the text for a while she began to grow on me and I definitely appreciated the strength and courage she had in becoming a leader of her team. She became easy to relate to and I definitely could appreciate how difficult it was for her to continuously lead a double life: one that focused on protecting the rift and one with her family. Foster's writing also was a key point of enjoyment for me. She wrote science fiction in a way that was understandable and enjoyable. I've never found myself so engrossed in a world before. In addition, she wrote with such ease and fluidity that I couldn't help but finding myself moving through the story at a quick pace. And she definitely gained bonus points in my book for writing such an amazingly strong female character.
The only aspect of this book that I didn't enjoy was the romance. I've often noticed that a lot of YA novels seem to "need" to have some hint of romance to sell to readers; however, this book didn't need it. The characters were so well-developed and the action was so fast-paced that it seemed as though the romance was some what of a distraction. It felt too fast and too "insta-love" and I know that Ryn could have stood on her as a leading lady without the added romance.
Overall, this was an enjoyable book. If you're into science-fiction and alternate universes I would definitely recommend trying this book. It contains so many interesting elements that I haven't seen YA touch in a fairly long time....more
