That was a very nice story. First thing I liked is that it was about working class people. I liked the post office setting and the description of their everyday job, the camaraderie, th gossip, etc. I liked how focused, professional and hard working Janice was, I liked how nice and cool and fun (and refreshingly NOT some uber "Alpha" male) Douglas was. The romance was a tiny bit too fast for me and there is this ONE little details that surprisingly (seeing how Janice was supposed to be this very responsible and cautious person) never came up when they had sex which bugged me, but all in all it was a very enjoyable read.

I didn't know it was from a role-playing game before reading it, but now I kind of understand a few things better. The writing was good, with a strong world building and very detailed descriptions of the city. The plot was interesting and I liked the general atmosphere of the story. My main problem with the book is that it took 80% of it for any substantial action to happen, and throughout those first 80% parts the heroine spent most of the time wallowing into her guilt, self-doubting and procrastinating about telling "lies", being a lie and shit. The lead character would be even more interesting if the pace of the story had been a bit more tight. That got annoying pretty fast, especially when I figured out way before her most of the "mysteries" Talia was spending the whole book wondering about (why Burrin was acting like he did, why Khee was suddenly silent...). I ended up being way more intrigued by and interested in some of the secondary characters like Burrin than her. I would have rather read a story about him and Seild and Khee with Talia being secondary than the contrary.
Side note : what's with the cover of this edition; it's a wrong one!...more

Sydney was an interesting character and I liked how Mason disliked her at first sight. The plot was thin and predictable yet I enjoyed reading about how their mutual dislike turned into attraction. What I deeply disliked his the way he treated her during after that big reveal. It felt just unnecessary to go to such extreme. Also, the way this very serious act/offense was treated as a no subject of no importance for relationship afterwards bugged me. I hate how it turned Mace into a THAT person, and Syd just shrugged like it was OK, or worse she kind of deserved it....more

Joshua was interesting as well as Kayla. Although their relationship grew a bit fast and disjointed. We knew from the start how Kay felt but we never really got the same perspective from Joshua. Like, sure they had history but his feelings went from said friendship back then to physical attraction all of a sudden to forever love... The strength of it felt a bit one sided... Then the letters at the end felt a bit too much. Lastly, being part of this series made this story feel a bit repetitive. It's basically the same pattern : the Alpha Townsend with murderous streaks when "his woman " is in danger and all. The reason why I disliked interconnected series like that is also that I sided eye a bit the whole fetishy vibe you get with all those related men having almost the exact same love interest... Also, the word "racism" is never uttered once. Like I haven't read any references to it in any of those book so far. Sure they are all privileged people but still... Anyway, most things that bugged me had more to do with the series and the genres problematic types (like the food themed description of black people's skin...). The book on its own is OK....more

Carter is everything you could think of as the hot firefighter, with the former special forces and part of a wealthy family background. A tad but too much on the heroic side. Michelle and Diego are a cute family. I thought the way Diego took to Carter a tiny bit too easy but he was said to be an easygoing kid. The story was on par with the Townsends series, so nothing very exciting (insta attraction, Townsends white knight "saving"). But the book was entertaining....more

He got a bit better but still way too much. Their relationship wasn't bad, but way too stereotypical. Like the first scene between Aaron and Patience at that club was awful. I hate when authors use these trope with the man being a brute and the woman having her body "betray her of whatever. It pulled me out of the entire thing and I skipped most of their sex scene because of the same kind of manhandling. The kids were nice enough, but also on the stereotypical side. I liked the Emma bit even though it felt a little too deus Ex machina....more

Anyway, Reese was a nice and interesting heroine if a little too much on the "alone and lonely" side. Chael every thing you would expect from an "Alpha". Disappointed how little was made of his Native American heritage. Also, the final act/resolution of the big mystery was a let down....more

He was the main pull that kept me reading. I disliked the whole story. Not him being who he was. I actually liked when his other self showed up. But all the abusive stuff, that were NOT due to his illness just left me cold to the "romance" part of the book. After the firts few one that were good if a bit formulaic (there is so much male sexual dominance that one can find hot, especially when it looks so much like the one between other couples in the series), I skipped all the sex scenes that were just sexual violences to me. The one that spark some interest was the one by the end were the roles where consensually reversed and it's a shame it was not more explored and somehow said to be detrimental to him.
I particularly dislike how bdsm is always used in those "dark" "romance". No matter how many warnings the author gives, not asking for explicit consent is never ok. And just because one asks once, does not mean it is ok to force oneself on anyone another time. Also eliciting arousal does not make sexual violence ok. Because keeping someone against their will and proceeding to force sexual intercourse with them is not ok just because they are supposedly "soul mates" or whatever. There is nothing to root for in such a situation. I liked Hishashi, but disliked how he was written to behave and could care less about him and Taylor.
I wished Taylor was more than some sex object/mental medecine to him. I wished she was more of a character on her own. But she was never given much depth. She hardly interacted with anyone else than H to get a sense of wjo she was, we never get to see her be on her own, talented and all. I just felt bad for her, being half of a character. There were glimpses of the person she was, and I quite liked her or could have been but it was never developped.
So, I would not advised against this book. Itcis an interesting read. Too bad it failed to reach the potential of its own characters and their complicated selves and story....more

Just a bit of a let down. 1/Too many inconsistensies or things that were not believable regarding Nikki's whole six years hideout/private school thing. Like nobody ever saw her at that place, she could come and goas she wanted, nobody ever questionned her being enrolled at that place and having so much means but no parents. Mathias is said both to have had this big financial independance and at the same time, somehow, still being under the thumb of his father. Then, all of a sudden, Nikk appeared and she is seemingly welcomed with no question asked by anyone. 2/ The dynamics between the 2 were too similar to Angel and Easy. Especially their sexual dynamics. And like the previous couple, those sex scene became repetitive. 3/I also don't understand why they were made to supposedly have fallen for each other quasi immediatly, especcially considering the circumstances. Like the whole ring thing is supposed to have happened right after meeting Nikki, at a time I don't see how Mathias could have felt such feelings toward her, even if she belevied she was the age she said she was (which, considering how she was physically described, is also very doubtful, and I can't believe Mathias actually could believe that). Si even though I don't like THAT particular trop me that I find creepish, it could have been done less creepish... It is disappointing because Nikki and Mathias were interesting characters and their families backstories fascinating. thing...more

Also, even if you gonna do some lite kink/bdsm (which spanking is), there NEED to be express consent by both partners ! Ugh ! I very much dislike this trope about the woman (always the woman) discovering she likes rough sex or kink by having the man manhandling her to punish her... Also I would have done without the last part of the story (the big misunderstood situation that spiralled out of control). Still way too much 'ruthless' shout out, and more telling than showing, especially when it came for how incredibly smart and successful they all are... I liked Fade persona and Delightful was a good leading characters. I wish there was more showing than telling though. To have all those people being unbelievably talented is one thing, but at least show us how they got where they're. Like they all came from seemingly middle class background. Still, you don't win Oscars just 'like that'. Especially when you're black and female. So I had a hard time believing in that part. Same for Fade : the character would have had much more credibility if we could have read a bit more about some type of struggle to achieve his successes. Also, the part about his trauma could have been more detailed. And describing him as 'ruthless' many times was a bit too much....more
