The key to delving into this tome was to read the story of one album cover per day, accompanied by listening to the self-same album. It's a great way to further appreciate your understanding of album covers that you're already deeply familiar with, or introduce you to covers (and bands) you may be less familiar with, or have never heard of.
Martos explores art styles, influences, composition and meaning with information gleaned from the artists themselves, working in various mediums. I personally found out that one of my favourite album's cover was done by one of my favourite artists (Fear Factory: Demanufacture by Dave McKean), and I never knew the whole time. There were some great connective moments like this for me throughout this book.
There are, of course, some critical covers missing, and we can only hope that the rumoured future editions can broaden the scope of metal artwork and their stories....more
