I saw some similarities Extinction, the book I finished and this. It’s essentially a search for the remains of the Donner party and some murders related to it. It’s an enjoyable read but pretty easy to figure out until an out of left field twist in the epilogue. I think the story would have been stronger if this was revealed sooner....more

I rarely enjoy short story collections, even if they are by my favorite authors. I thought the foreword by Child was the best thing about the book and explains why authors even write short stories. There is not a stand out in the bunch. There are some decent anecdotes and details, but things that could have been easily added to a longer, greater work....more

I knew nothing about it. I thought it had a nice original slant on dystopian future tales. A little Hunger Games with a splash of Handmaid's tale. Really good concept. Back cover made me think was would be scary, but everything was realistically explained. I think it would be better without the romance, but I guess you need it to sell YA books. Would make a a cool series but is reminiscent of YellowJackets, a little...more

I was a big Crichton fan and I was hoping this book would fill the void he has left in that particular genre. There are similarities to Jurassic Park but it is a murder investigation inside the park that makes it different. I like the concept, the characters and the direction it was going until it got to the big twist. It was just too silly to get behind. I finished the book and will try another by the author but it seemed like a bad joke more than a condemnation of scientists playing God....more

Through gifts and recommendations I decided my three favorite authors were H. G. Wells, Michael Crichton and Stephen King. That love has carried throughout my adult life. I still need to try each new book by Stephen King even though I don't finish all of them. And I have to try anything with Crichton's name on it, even though he died years ago. Wells hasn't released much lately. I am not a fan of James Patterson and actually consider him a hack. I did try his Doc Savage reboot, but it didn't capture me. I think of him as a book factory that helps other celebrities get a mystery publishing credit. But I owed it to my 8th grade self to try it. It is not a bad book, and it is hard to know who to blame for the melodrama and slow pace. There is a good idea in here and many will love it. It didn't really feel like a Crichton book to me....more
