I knew nothing about it. I thought it had a nice original slant on dystopian future tales. A little Hunger Games with a splash of Handmaid's tale. Really good concept. Back cover made me think was would be scary, but everything was realistically explained. I think it would be better without the romance, but I guess you need it to sell YA books. Would make a a cool series but is reminiscent of YellowJackets, a little...more

I just A goog friend of mine thinks this is the best in the series. It is certainly her favorite. Although I enjoyed it, I can't call it my favorite. I just think it is overlong and crammed with too much detail. Uxbridge is an amazing villain and Jim Dale does another amazing job on the reading. It's missing a sense of fun. But, of course, it is superb and building to a fantastic climax. ...more

This is where I started getting confused with the movies. Everything is explained beautifully in the book. And narrator Jim Dale is extraordinary....more

This series came out before I was an educator and then I taught kids too young for the series. My own children liked the series, but somehow it escaped me. I have read all of Rowling's Cormoran Strike novels, so I figured it was time to read Harry Potter. Just a fun, joyful series that is incredibly original to me. I look forward to continuing the series....more

After several readings of the series, I grew to appreciate the love story and the rebellion/ war story. But it is the game itself that has always been so fascinating to me. That is one of the problems with the prequel: not enough Hunger Games. This book starts off well, but you should be wary of any book that takes a villainous character and sets them up as the protagonist. Snow is hard to like, and this book won't change that. This is really for the fans with all of its nods to things that happen in the original trilogy. Another problem is that it is overlong and becomes a chore to slog through in the last third. It does have some redeeming parts and Collins does her best to invoke the feeling of the trilogy. It's just not the trilogy. I am probably done with any new editions unless the focus is on the past games themselves....more
