I really, really enjoyed this adventure/romance of Mary Reade, one of the known, historical, female pirates... although one of the things I love aboutI really, really enjoyed this adventure/romance of Mary Reade, one of the known, historical, female pirates... although one of the things I love about the novel is how it explores what we can't know about the historical Mary's own gender, when she's known as both Mary and Mark. The other main strand of the book is a reflection on close relationships - friendship, romance, (the blurry places between these), chosen family vs family of origin. The whole is well-seasoned with (sometimes quite bloody) piracy and hard life in London, the Caribbean Islands and on the high seas.
