When the story focuses on their relationship it's really engaging, and I'm not even offended at their characterization, it seems cannon enough. Their relationship is raw and both of them are hurt by the past and carry different emotional baggage, and they help each deal with it. It's really beautiful.
It's just that the story focuses TOO DAMN MUCH on really irrelevant stuff. Like their work and the conference and the fact that there is no plot whatsoever. There are so many words, sentences and paragraphs dedicated to some magical creatures legislature mumbo jumbo and herbology mumbo jumbo. I mostly skipped those parts, but I can't anymore. I read like half a page and space out. I'm sad that I'll miss out on the resolution of their relationship, but I really can't wage through this boring nonsense that is supposed to be the plot of this story....more

They said their I love you's, they're living together, happy and banging. If I continue reading I'm bound to be angry, cause with 20% left there's a big chance there's going to be a big breakup scene and to be honest I don't really want to read that. I barely got through the first 80% if we're being honest. I just don't feel the chemistry between the characters, there's no tension, there's nothing really this book is doing for me....more

Most of the times I would have to talk myself into reading a couple of pages, hoping something interesting would happen, because for the most part of this book nothing happens.
I also realized I'm quite over the whole 18 yo heroine and 200+ yo hero pairing. And then there is the whole thing with questionable consent that I won't even delve into.
So yeah, not a fan, won't be continuing the series. ...more
I thought I could let it go. I didn't want to write a review, I didn't want to get upset even more, but I can't get this book off my mind so I got to I thought I could let it go. I didn't want to write a review, I didn't want to get upset even more, but I can't get this book off my mind so I got to rant. High of the last book, I thought I loved the characters and the world so much I thought I could read about them doing mundane stuff and be entertained. Turns out I was wrong. Most of this regular-book-sized novella is Feyre shopping for presents, or Rhys shopping for presents, or them preparing for Winter Solstice and yo, it. was. boring. There was some funny (if a little immature) stuff, when the group gets together, they have a really great dynamic, I love their playful ribbing and banter. Individually tho, when we have to spend time with Feyre mulling about bills and painting and Rhys mulling about Feyre, it's just so easy to put this down and forget about it. I love that we got some glimpses of other characters, and those are just enough to tie you over. My biggest gripe is what was done to Nesta's character. I loved Nesta. I know lot of people here hated her, but I loved her from the get go. I know she could be a "snake", and her behavior and snide remarks made her difficult to like at the beginning, but she as a character made such progress since the first book and I hated what was done to her here. The way she was made to be reclused, not even caring about Elain anymore, or anyone else for the matter, being so defeated and self-destructive after the war is something that is just out of character for the Nesta that we saw in the first three books. Nesta and Cassian were my favorite ship, I thought finally some progress and then this novella happened. Though I have to say, I loved the teaser at the end, and January can't come soon enough....more

Kind of a shame when I've almost read the entire thing, but I feel like I've given enough mental energy to this book and life is too short to do read things you don't enjoy. I don't practice rating books I haven't read, but since I read the majority of this, I think it's fair. I didn't connect with the heroine, I didn't connect with the hero (which is a shame, because Connor was so likeable in the prequels), I didn't connect with the story, with anything honestly. There's just so much drama, much more than I'm in the mood for. And it's not even good drama. So yeah, read at your own risk....more
DNF @63% but honestly, I should've given up so much sooner.

There are two things that drew me to this book. First, the cover. It's gorgeous. Not only for this part but for the next two books in the series also. Now, don't think I'm shallow, I did get the free sample first, Avery Flynn being a new author to me and all. The sample was awesome and I got hooked straight away. It has a very strong beginning, different from most romantic novels I've read. I thought great, something new. Yep, that was an illusion. Whoever picked the sample knew what they were doing.
Okay, so one of the many things I disliked in this book, is that we were constantly told how sexy and attractive they found each other. By the way, there was a lot of that going on, telling-not-showing. We are told that Gina's humor is self-deprecating, and the woman never cracked a joke. But I digress. I felt like I had their attraction shoved down my throat all the time. It was so jarring. Ford and Gina would be having a conversation about something, and the author would interrupt the dialogue to inform us how handsome Ford has handsome abs, and he got distracted by how Gina is gnawing irresistibly at her irresistible lips. Or how Ford stares sexily at her with his sexy green eyes, while she stands on her leggy legs. I don't know, I got so many descriptions of both of them, I swear it's difficult to remember if they ever managed to have a proper conversation at all. For a book that has "Looks aren't everything" on its cover, it sure does focus a LOT on looks. There are other ways to create tension between the characters, just saying.
Speaking of the cover, it promises a hot romantic comedy. So let's check.
Hot? While the sex scene was decent enough, the sexy talk was cringe, omg, Ford's dirty talk makes me regret learning how to read. How can I unread something?
Romantic? It's difficult to feel the love when the hero is a lying and deceiving jerk, who also had this rare episode of sexism and condescension when he expressed his beliefs that wedding planning is women's work and it can't be that difficult. Part of me believes that is just blatant manipulation by the author, so that he can get a set down from Gina, and that we are left in awe at her feistiness and spirit.
Comedy? There was an attempt to be funny, but the jokes were mostly old and overused. Shopping for tampons with your boyfriend? He he so awkward. Accidentally let a corny af innuendo slip into the conversation? Must blush furiously, while he finds it oh so charming.
So neither was it hot, nor romantic, nor funny.

To be honest, I was expecting more since the MCs are quite prominent in the series, but this was just... no. Let me tell you why. The series isn't a stranger to some purple prose, some books have dipped their toes in it, others have soaked their feet, but this was full, over the head immersion. It was insufferable. So I'm giving up.

Part of it are my expectations, I foolishly thought that Layla knew what Vance had done and that their animosity would stem from that. I expected it's from there on that they would build on their connection and whatnot. I expected a full-blown enemies-to-lovers romance. It's the blurb. It made me think I'll be getting something new and fresh.
Obviously, I was wrong. You can guess immediately what the main conflict will be about, and it's what made me lose interest in the story and characters. Another thing that I disliked was the insta-lust between the main characters and the dialogue that my eyes were exposed to as the result. Never have I ever read a cringier dialogue than the one that occurred when Layla and Vance first met. In no way am I a prude, but mentioning your dick size the first time you meet someone, moreover, on an occasion that was supposed to be a business meeting, is simply revolting. The cringe is not limited to their first conversation either.
Now granted, there are some funny gems, especially that scene where Vance changes a diaper for the first time, that was really funny, so I'll give the author that. Generally speaking though, you've probably read this book before. I know I have. But don't let my high expectations and unfavorable opinion keep you from reading it, looking at the other reviews, seems that I'm in the minority here....more

I just didn't care for the characters, the mystery, the plot, in general, I just didn't care. With the previous book, we were at least somewhat introduced to the main characters, so I was intrigued. But with Leonie, she was only mentioned in passing, just brought her up when talking about their shop, but otherwise she didn't have one line of dialogue. Made me completely disinterested in her happy ending.
Two stars because Simon was sometimes charming, and of course, because of Gladys....more
