I loved the voice of Liberty and her bravery that is barely keeping things together. When her unpredictable dad leaves her and her sister out in the middle of the desert, Liberty is left to figure things out and keep her sister safe. There is a great cast of quirky characters that Liberty describes with her unique voice. I was rooting for Liberty from the beginning. I also liked the format of each chapter heading being a survival strategy. Wonderful debut novel. Will be watching for other titles by Jen White....more

I agree with reviews that suggest it might be a hard sell to the older students because the protagonist is 11 years old, but some of the issues dealt with in the book ( hints of drug and alcohol use with her parents, and sexually suggestive embraces by the sister) make this a bit too old for the younger students. Even so, I was pleased to see a well written book that deals with a family coping with MS....more

Diversity, prejudice, the environment, immigration, all issues related through the eyes of two young people from very different backgrounds. They start as just pen pals, but discover in one another a best friend and soul mate. The letter format was interesting as was that fact that each of the two voices was written by a different author. A lovely book....more
