The data is heavily US-centric but that's understandable since that's what the author's research is based on. The questionnaire at the end is quite helpful. I also like the author's voice and his push for better connected, more tolerant environments that lead to innovation....more

Did the author receive a phone call from the publisher saying the book had to be finished in one day? Otherwise, I'm not sure how to explain the drastic difference between the hilariously funny first part and a hurried, rather shallow and half-baked second part with unfinished threads sticking out in all directions.
Anyway. The first part of the novel is so worth reading in and of itself that it doesn't matter much. Aunt Augusta is one of the best characters I've seen, and the britishness of the protagonist is adorable and funny in the wry british humo(u)r way.
Think Kazuo Ishiguro's Remains of the Day - but funny. And with Aunt Augusta, who... okay, I'll shut up and let you read the book....more

Well, that, and the fact that the gender roles are changed: a forty-years-old woman and a cherub coming of age. But the main thing is that there is no telling oneself Humbert-Humbert is an unreliable narrator and the scene of seduction is all his invention. That's the uncomfortable feeling that The Praise to the Stepmother produces in the reader. There is much more going on in the novel but that's the leitmotif.
I do think that the second book, The Notebooks of Don Rigoberto, is far superior though. It's less direct yet more shocking in a way. If you liked this book at all, be sure to continue on to that....more

It's not a biography: some details and a few anecdotes inevitably come up but do not expect a full account of his life. It's more of a collection of short essays on what makes Magritte one of the most interesting artists, both among fellow surrealists and in general. Paquet's writing is clever and beautiful:
