U svijetu fantastike, mnogo je zanimljivih i uzbudljivih serijala čiji svaki novi nastavak jedan ljubitelj fantastike žedno upija. Opet, baš kao i u bU svijetu fantastike, mnogo je zanimljivih i uzbudljivih serijala čiji svaki novi nastavak jedan ljubitelj fantastike žedno upija. Opet, baš kao i u bilo kojem drugom žanru, uvijek postoje apsolutni favoriti, uvijek ima serijala i Serijala, pisaca i Pisaca. I premda je ponekad teško odabrati, uvijek postoje oni neki koji su nam najdraži, ili su barem među top 5 ili top 10 najdražih svih vremena. Za mene, to je Joe Abercrombie i njegov svijet 'Prvog zakona'.
Mjesto na kojem upoznajemo ovaj svijet Abercrombiejeva je trilogija 'Prvi zakon', a romani 'Poslužiti hladno', 'Junaci' i, još nepreveden, 'Red country' na tu se trilogiju nastavljaju. E sad, iako su ova tri romana svojevrsni nastavci originalne trilogije, njihova razlika u odnosu na trilogiju je u tome što je svaki od njih koncipiran i kao samostalna, zaokružena priča. Što znači da odabir načina na koji ćete uploviti u svijet 'Prvog zakona' ostaje isključivo na vama: volite li čitati kronološki, krenite s trilogijom; ako vas kronologija događaja pretjerano ne dira, krenite od nekog od ova tri samostalna romana. Kako god odabrali, vjerujte, uživat ćete u čitanju.
Naslovni 'Junaci' skupina je od nekoliko stijena kod koje će se sresti dvije sukobljene vojske: Južnjaci, predvođeni najhrabrijim časnicima Unije i Sjevernjaci, predvođeni Crnim Dowom. Ovaj sukob je nešto što se već dugo kuha, a prvi mag Bayaz, potaknut, nesumnjivo, interesima sveprisutnih bankara, odlučio je kako je vrijeme da se ovaj sukob prestane odgađati. Ono što će uslijediti bit će, nesumnjivo, gadna i krvava bitka u kojoj će se pokazati tko su Junaci, a tko tek junaci.
Ako ste čitali Abercrombieja, onda znate da je ono što vam je ovdje pripremio još jedna poslastica prepuna krvi, ožiljaka, oštrica, spletki, intriga, junaštva, izdaja i nemilosrdnih gadova koji su u sve to upleteni. A znate i da je sve to skupa umetnuto u sjajnu priču, ispunjenu jednako sjajno okarakretiziranim likovima, te onim posebnim, tipičnim za Abercrombieja, ciničnim humorom zbog kojeg ga toliko i volimo čitati.
Abercrombiejevi junaci možda nisu junaci s velikim J (barem ne svi), ali su svejedno posebni i lako prirastu srcu. Svi Abercrombiejevi junaci su, više ili manje, 'oštećeni', svi imaju neke svoje tajne, ožiljke, mane, svi imaju neko breme koje nose sa sobom, i to je ono zbog čega se možda s njima tako lako povezati i zašto ih je tako lako zavoljeti. Jer nisu savršeni, samo ljudski. Ipak, ono što im možda nedostaje u fizičkom smislu, ovi junaci daleko nadoknađuju svojom domišljatošću, lukavošću, inteligencijom ili jednostavno dobrim vezama i ludom srećom. Neki od njih će postati Velika imena, neki će završiti u blatu. Jer sam život je takav, grub i neuljepšan.
Abercrombiejev stil pisanja svrstava ga u tzv. grimdark fantastiku. Posebnost ovog podžanra fantastike je to što nam on prikazuje stvaran, neuljepšan fantastični svijet i događaje u njemu, za razliku od uobičajenog idealističkog pristupa koji je inače prisutan u žanru fantastike. U grimdarku junaci uvijek ne pobjeđuju, baš kao što ni dobro ne pobijedi uvijek zlo, smrt je ponekad (često) nemoguće izbjeći, moral nije uvijek na visini, a život je surov i pun nasilja. Abercrombie se u ovom žanru odlično snalazi i jedan je od pisaca koji su mu, po meni, najviše pridonijeli. Otišla bih čak toliko daleko da ga nazovem kraljem grimdarka (da, čak i uz G.R.R. Martina!).
Rat, tj. borbe i sukobi česta su tema u ovom žanru, a besmislenost ratovanja je genijalno prikazana u ovom romanu. Junaci su, bez obzira na junačko im ime, zapravo beznačajan komad zemlje, usred ničega, na kojem se spremaju sukobiti dvije velike vojske, od kojih niti jedna pobjedom u ovom sukobu neće bogznašto dobiti. Svejedno, mačevi se oštre, prilike za herojstva tu su za one koji ih žele. Sjevernjaci bitku misle dobiti hrabrošću i nemilosrdnim ratničkim vještima, Južnjaci svirepim lukavstvom i taktiziranjem. No, kao i u svakom ratu, pravi igrači uvijek su u pozadini: spletkari - ili kod Abercrombieja - bankari.
Volite li fantastiku, Abercrombie je pisac koje jednostavno ne možete zaobići. A jednom kad se navučete na njegove romane, stalno ćete željeti još i još (govorim iz iskustva :)). 'Junaci' su fantastičan roman ispunjen akcijom, pustolovinama, borbama, junačkim djelima (i onima koja su malo manje junačka), intrigama, spletkama, izdajama, porazima i pobjedama. Čitat ćete ga, opčinjeni, u jednom dahu, dok će vam u ušima odzvanjati zvuk sudaranja oštrica. Ako ste Abercrombiejev fan, vjerujem da vas ne moram nagovarati da pročitate ovaj roman, a ako (još) niste, svakako uplovite u njegov svijet 'Prvog zakona': kronološki ili ne, na vama je da odaberete....more

Iako je kod nekih knjiga na ovo pitanje prilično lako odgovoriti ('o istrazi jezivog umorstva', 'o zombijima', 'o kolonizaciji Mjeseca', itd.), kod nekih mi to predstavlja priličan problem. Zašto? Jer je ponekad jako teško radnju sažeti u par rečenica, čak ni ne toliko zbog kompleksnosti radnje, već jednostavno zato što mi je jako teško objasniti o čemu se radi u apsolutno savršenom i genijalnom romanu u kojem se događa TOLIKO TOGA! 'Pa... tko je glavni lik?', ide to dalje. Nema glavnog lika! Ima toliko super likova koji su manje-više svi glavni da ne znam otkud da počnem!
Ha. Pa, eto, to vam je moj problem kad pokušam ukratko prepričati o čemu to piše Joe Abercrombie. :) Svejedno, probat ću. Here goes nothing:
Priča prati nekoliko likova čije se individualne priče isprepletu u gradu Adui, glavnom gradu Unije. Unija, smještena na južnom dijelu Abercrombiejevog svijeta, u pripravnom je ratnom stanju jer joj s jedne strane prijeti mogući rat sa Sjevernjacima, a s druge je u stalnom sukobu oko grada Dagoske, na koji pravo polaže i Uniji susjedno carstvo Gurka.
Logen Devetprsti sjevernjački je ratnik, član opake skupine vještih ratnika, od kojih se rastao i krenuo na put u Aduu, gdje se treba održati natjecanje u mačevanju. Na tom putu pridružio mu se mag Bayaz, čiji je cilj povratiti mjesto koje mu, kao Prvom Magu, pripada u zatvorenom vijeću koje u principu upravlja Unijom. Na istom će se mjestu naći i Sand dan Glokta, opaki inkvizitor, čija je zadaća da Bayaza spriječi u njegovom naumu. Isto tako, na mačevalačkom turniru naći će se i kapetan Jezal dan Luthar, pomalo umišljeni plemić, koji sanja o tome da osvoji turnir, a u čemu će mu pomoći upravo Bayaz. Slijedi napad Sjevernjaka, mnogo borbi i izdaja, upoznajemo još nekoliko likova, Bayaz otkriva još svojih skrivenih talenata, a iza svega toga sprema i ekspediciju čiji je cilj pronaći jedan drevni izgubljeni artefakt. Također, rat samo što ne bukne na oba fronta, a ekspedicija se mora nekako provući između svega toga - i izvući živu glavu, usput.
Koliko sam ovim kratkim sadržajem uspjela rasvijetliti o čemu se ovdje radi - ne znam, ali nadam se da sam vas barem uspjela zainteresirati za priču. Jer priča je doista genijalna, i uzbudljiva, i napeta, i sjajna, priča je nešto što bi možda nastalo kada bi se 'Gospodar prstenova' i 'Pjesma leda i vatre' spojile u jedno, ali je još bolja od toga. Osobno (OK, Tolkien je možda izvan svake konkurencije), da moram birati između Martina i Abercrombieja, uvijek bih izabrala Abercrombieja. Za mene, on je najbolje od najboljeg što grimdark - i medieval fantasy općenito - imaju za ponuditi.
Ovaj je roman ujedno i Abercrombiejev prvi roman, kao i prvi roman trilogije 'Prvi zakon'. Uvodi nas u srednjevjekovni fantasy svijet ispunjen junacima, ratnicima, uhodama, magovima - i bankarima. Ovi potonji možda su i najvažniji, ali morat ćete pročitati knjigu (i trilogiju!) kako biste saznali zašto. Teško je objasniti, baš morate sami doći do toga. Ali uživat ćete na tom putu, garantiram. ;)
Naslov romana referenca je na citat iz Homerove 'Odiseje': "Sama oštrica potiče na djela nasilja". To je ono što ovaj roman zorno prikazuje na koži svojih likova, da nasilje i borbe ponekad nije moguće izbjeći, kao da sama oštrica traga za krvlju, a ne ona(j) tko ju drži u rukama. Raznoliki likovi koje ovdje susrećemo upadaju u šarolik raspon ljudske prirode. Junaci nisu junaci u doslovnom smislu te riječi, oni su samo dobri, hrabri ljudi koji, da bi nešto postigli čine i puno loših stvari, baš kao što su to i loši, opaki ljudi koji ponekad naprave neku dobru stvar. A ima i glupih i nesmotrenih i posve uobraženih i svih mogućih kombinacija svih ovih osobina. Stvari ne ovise uvijek o onome što se pomno planira, već (češće čak) o pukoj sreći i igri sudbine.
Kad smo već kod nasilja, opisi tog nasilja dosta su naturalistički i sirovi, ali takvi moraju i biti. Ne bi išlo nikako drugačije. Sve glede ove knjige savršeno je koncipirano i sklopljeno u nešto epski fantastično. (Fangirlam sad već, jel' da? Kad moram! It's just THAT good.)
Mogla bih reći da se u ovom romanu radi o šarolikoj skupini posve različitih likova sa zajedničkom misijom kojom upravlja Prvi od magova. Mogla bih reći da se ovdje radi o skupini Sjevernjaka, koja je ostala bez vođe, i koja pokušava ostati vjerna svojoj domovini, svome kralju i učiniti ono što je ispravno, ali se to ispostavi teže i zamršenije nego što je moguće zamisliti. Mogla bih reći i da se ovdje radi o jednom uhodi i jednom umišljenom kapetanu koji će putem kroz ovu priču pronaći potpuno drugu svrhu svog postojanja. Mogla bih reći i da se ovdje radi o skrivenoj sili, akumuliranoj moći i utjecaju, koja upravlja svijetom, svima naočigled, a opet vješto skrivena. Sve bi to bilo donekle točno i sve bi bilo tek djelić svega o čemu ovaj roman jest.
Želite li stvarno znati o čemu se radi - pročitajte ovaj roman, i ovu trilogiju, i sve što je Joe Abercrombie ikada napisao. Volite li fantastiku, posebno srednjevjekovnu fantastiku, epsku fantastiku i grimdark, žive likove koje ćete vječno pamtiti i ubojito dobru priču od čijih se stranica nećete moći otrgnuti, svakako pročitajte! Zakoračit ćete u u ovaj svijet i - začas! - skroz ćete se u njemu izgubiti. Nema boljeg od ovog, ljudi moji. Nema boljeg!...more
