Opinionated heroines, pop-culture references, horse jokes, bookworms, and the occasional Shakespearean quote - 16th century England never looked so exciting. The lightness and humor with which this story is delivered, coupled with a cast of nerdy characters and a sprinkle of magic, succeed in making this quick read... whatever it is. [image]
"What my wife desires - and what you should have guessed, had you paid attention - is bookcases. And books, of course, to fill them. Not more decorations or useless items. She wants books."

This book literally saved my life. It clasped my hand and gently pulled me out of the pit I had dug myself in whilst forsaking too many stories to count, too many fates I wasn't tempted to follow. Meeting Kestrel finally put a stop to the nagging question of What am I doing here? and allowed me to get invested in the events and care about the characters. For that, Marie Rutkoski has my eternal gratitude. And for her similes, of course, intricately woven through her prose like golden thread through a simple fabric. The development of her characters was just as fascinating - Kestrel's from a girl with questionable reputation to the strong, proud and cunning heroine she is, and Arin's transformation from a wild card to a high hand. Reading this book with classical music playing in the background has proven to be as addictive as eating chocolate candy. The reason I'm giving 3 stars is because of the slow pacing at the beginning and the opportunity for the author to delve even deeper into her world. Given the fact that this is the first book of a trilogy, chances are it can only get better. Fingers crossed the upcoming angst won't be the death of me! :D
