Amandla lives with her white mother in a one room house in a makeshift town in South Africa they call Sugar Town. Her mum struggles with her mental health and has gaps in her memory when it comes to Amandla’s Black dad but one day she discovers a HUGE family secret that blows her world wide open.
This was absolutely stunning! Nunn has an effortless way of bringing these complex characters to life. Amandla and her friends are so loveable and fierce and the way that they stuck together through everything was so heartwarming.
The themes of bigotry, racism and living in poverty are effortlessly woven into the plot with so much care, I wasn’t surprised that the author was drawing on personal and past experiences.
Some extra things that I wanted to mention is that there were the two main romances (there’s a delightful queer side romance!), and the ending of this book???? Excuse me while I go and cry for 10 years ...more

"I know you put a lot of stock in the fact that you're 'better' now. That you handle things. That you cope. But coping takes a lot our of a person, too. And handling things doesn't mean never struggling or slipping up. Life isn't that black-and-white, not even close."

ALL HAIL TALIA HIBBERT, THE ROMANCE QUEEN. Seriously, these books are FANTASTIC, with healthy relationships and making sure minorities are represented. I know everyone's experiences are different but I can say for myself that the anxiety rep was so well done. Also if anyone says the perfect man doesn't exist, I'm going to shove this book in their face lmao.
I'm obsessed with Talia Hibbert's characters. They have such depth to them and are such individuals. You know how sometimes you read a romance series of companion books and all of the characters sort of blend together because they're all the same? Talia Hibbert's characters are all so UNIQUE with their own personalities and traits and even ways of speaking and I appreciate that so much. She's such a fantastic writer. And her books are so FUNNY! And EMPOWERING! I'm just obsessed. Can't wait for book 3!

I really enjoyed this! I did guess who the baddie was pretty early on though and I think I was expecting more based on the huge amount of hype surrounding this book, but it was a really solid read and I can't wait for the sequel!
trigger warnings (also note that the trigger warnings were listed at the start at the book. WE LOVE TO SEE IT): mild self-harm ideation, fantasy violence, emotional and physical abuse, anxiety and panic attacks, parent death and animal death. ...more
