This was a book I purchased with a gift card I had for an e-book, and, seeing that it was so inexpensive and unknown, I didn't get my hopes up for a life-changing experience. Sometimes, a book hits a reader just right, and that was the case with this lovely little novel with me. I don't know if timing had to do with it, but I just felt a very strong connection with the main characters despite not having the same health issues as them. Then again, that's what the story is all about. The biggest message I took from it was that we all have problems and fears and insecurities whether physical, emotional, or otherwise. It is about life, death, loss, morality and these themes are dealt with through history, family ties, and The Holocaust. The ending was so unexpected that I had to go back and re-read parts of it just to fully absorb all themes, and I am sure I still missed some. ...more
