Van Eeden's explanation of the nine types of dreams is perhaps the most coherent breakdown of the different dreams encountered by the intentional dreamer. By intentional dreamer I mean those who set out to sleep, dream, record dreams, and then consider. Intentional dreamwork is an intense psychological journey not for the faint of heart, where pilgrims often threaten their sanity and stability to achieve this research. Jung exposes himself similarly in "The Red Book" but with far more positive end results. Van Eeden fumbles a bit and is more likely to fall into rambling, but I still treasure his willingness to explore in this fashion. Those interested in the psychological underpinnings of dreams need to read Van Eeden, and suffer alongside this coiner of the term "lucid dreams". ...more
