I just love this series so much and it's one of the few that I will always go straight to the audio on. The narration in the audio is just so on point that even when I've read sections of the novels I hear Kevin R. Free's voice in my head for everything. He has so pinpointed Murderbot's internal monologue and it's epic. So yeah ecstatic. But, I hate the fact that there's no other books out right now to be getting too! Ugh, the next book in the series can not come out too soon for me!
Murderbot is dealing with a situation he's never been in. His own internal wiring is betraying him. Damn those actual emotions and actual neuro pathways. He's been through some trauma recently and for the first time he's questioning himself and is he capable of doing his job. I adore Murderbot and I find it fascinating how his own understanding of self and what it all means evolves in each new book. He's still learning what it means to be truly autonomous and to have actual feelings. They're dealing with the repercussions of what happened with the alien contamination the last time they were down on the planet, but they're stupid humans getting themselves into trouble again means he's going to have to go back down planetside. This is a great pick up right after everything that went down for Murderbot and ART's humans in their last big adventure.
Add in more ART and Murderbot banter over their humans, while in the midst of danger and shenanigans and well I'm hooked from the first page. There's so much to love about all these characters and Murderbot's observations come from such a unique point of view you can't help but be enthralled. I ...more

I loved the Pact Arcanum series so much and I'm adoring these prequels. This is a unique idea for how the Nightwalkers came to be. I was happy to get back to Rian and Mikal. The world is under a huge threat from Rian's twisted uncle, and as they learn more the see how dire things actually are. Mikal's brother Jasra may just be the key they need to figure things out. Somehow he's not fully tainted like so many of Laras other victims, he still retains his soul.
I enjoyed the action of this story. The battle with Laras is engaged and despite everyone wanting to defeat Laras there's still not a lot of trust between all the factions. There's no clear options and everything has risks.
I can't wait to see what happens next down the millenia as while there's a conclusion to this battle, the war is long from over....more

Like a lot of Megan Derr's shorter novels the action does go by pretty quickly, but the character development always still seems to be there. A lot of the relationship between Davrin and Cimar is off the page as both have longed for the other for years, but circumstances have prevented either from speaking. Now Cimar has volunteered to be Davrin's champion to avenge the death of both of their friend and Cimar's fellow knight, even as they both know it won't be a fair fight.
I enjoyed this story. It had the fantasy elements I enjoy. And well, it has dragons! :) But Davrin and Cimar were very sweet together as well. The arrangement in the novel is one that works because of the circumstances and I'm definitely invested to see Leonine's story....more

But ISo having seen hints of what was going on with Jamil and Rohan in the previous book I have to admit this story was nothing like I was expecting. But I loved the twists of it. Everything is not as it appears to the rest of the palace. But in the end we're still left with a lot of questions and I can't wait to find out more of the answers.
I loved Jamil and Rohan together. They're such different people, but they really do work together. Jamil does his duty, but that leadership role isn't as natural a fit for him as it is for Rohan. He needs to have a place to be able to come home and let off that burden. Rohan gives him that. And while this is a gay for you story it didn't bother me, or feel unbelievable for Rohan to make that adjustment. Because of their mental connection the bond was going to develop and the attraction was going to come because of how drawn to Jamil's mind he was.
There are some great reveals in this story and we move the Calluvian people further out into an era of change. I can't wait to see what happens next, knowing whose story is coming up. :)...more

I really love Arshad's writing and have enjoyed many of his series' over the years. This was different yet again, but such fun for a start. I love the idea of the forest consciousness and the differences between Western magic and that of the Empire.
Mikal and Rian were really great characters. They come from such different backgrounds, but the potential is there for a bridge to form and the two to share the differences in their magic. Of course there's also a ton of trouble brewing on the horizon with Rian's uncle's search for power in the worst places. There's going to be some real problems coming down the line that I'm sure that Mikal and Rian are going to be right in the center of it all along with Mikal's family and Rian's assigned assassin bodyguard.
This felt like an introduction and I can't wait to read more....more

Mattin is such a sweet soul, so devoted to the palace and to his king and his consort. I loved how oblivious he was to what the two men were after. He was going to do his best by them, never realizing his place in that at all. This was a sweet tale for all that it was dealing with corruption within the kingdom. The romance between the couple and Mattin was such a lovely dance. The backdrop of the collusion going on added a nice element to everything.
This was a great little fantasy story that made me smile as I was reading it. ...more

Everything is one bigThis is a hard middle book...everything is getting pulled apart at the seams and nothing seems to be going right for our heroes. Everything is one big ball of confusion and they seem to be stuck going down a path that somehow is preordained. Yet, each new thing they discover only seems to separate them more.
I really enjoy this team. They're all a little quirky and that keeps things interesting as they struggle to escape everything that's gunning for them. They're an uneasy alliance at first, but the bonds between them have really grown in this story. Which of course makes the trajectory they're on all the more painful. Auri and Kal's relationship develops in this one as they spend more time off together and their closeness deepens. He's going to support her in her trials to figure out just what being the Trigger means, but not everything is sunshine and rainbows for these two.
Gotta love the Tyler and Saedii storyline going on here though. Tyler's finally stepping up and being an actual leader. He's learning and realizing sometimes sacrifice is necessary. And then there are times where you're trapped in a room with a psychopath and yet she's still awesome. ;)
I adore Scarlett, Finn, and Zilla! Each one gets more depth in this novel and the insecurities and struggles have them all becoming more of who they should be. I loved the snark and the epic levels of just don't give a fuck at times.
All in all I really enjoyed this story. I'm soooooooooo glad I waited to read it though, because OH MY GOD CLIFFHANGER! And at least now the third book is out so I'm not living in the land of dying waiting to find out what happens next....more

I enjoyed it more for being the conclusion to the series than because I really felt the connection between the characters. The other two books in the series developed the relationships between the lifesworn so much better than this book did. I liked Omar for his devotion and how committed to helping people he was, but I didn't really feel like I got a chance to know him with either of his charges as he spent a good portion of this book alone with them captured. Of course their threesome was expected because of the series, but this was the least developed to me.

This is a very enjoyable start to a new series by a couple of authors I've thoroughly enjoyed in the past. I liked this group of kids thrown together This is a very enjoyable start to a new series by a couple of authors I've thoroughly enjoyed in the past. I liked this group of kids thrown together by a bit of a contrived circumstance. Ty, Scarlett, & Cat have been together throughout all of training to join the Aurora Legion, the twins and their best friend. They're committed to each other and are top of the class in each of their respective divisions. But Ty's rescue of Auri in the Fold, throws all their plans into chaos as they miss the all important Draft. Scarlett and Cat are going to stick with Ty no mater what, but now they're matched with three other misfits. They might be geniuses, but plays well with others isn't really in their vocabularies. Now they all find themselves on the run with a 200yr old stowaway who shouldn't exist and everything is changing. The world and space as they know it isn't going to be the same.
I liked the group and their energy together. Honestly Auri is the least interesting to me even if she is the one with all the crazy happening to her. I imagine waking up in a world 200+ years further advanced has to be disconcerting, add on top of that the strange things that are happening to her and she should be the most interesting. But it really wasn't until the very end of the story where she starts to really take an active interest in attempting to control things in her life on her own where she started to become a real character for me. The rest of the group have more personality and I did like seeing them all interact.
This story didn't feel as original as the Iluminae series did, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I'm definitely curious to see where things build to over the rest of the series....more

I wasn't looking for a lot of contention at the moment, so I was a little worried going into this that this would be a lot of alpha fighting and not really fit with my mood. But the alpha posturing really didn't last long so I found myself settling nicely into this story. Royce and Haydn ultimately are a really good balance for each other. Also I appreciated that by the end of the story both of the men were getting to finally be who they truly were not trying to conform to something in order to exist within the law of the land.
This was an interesting take on the alpha/omega dynamic in that really these aren't shifters. Sure there's some sort ancestral hint of something, but really this is just dynamics without the animal being a large part of things. Royce's instincts in this story hit him harder than he expects when he's always done such a good job of controlling his alpha instincts. But being around Haydn is throwing him for a loop. It's messing with Haydn's head just as much. He was never expecting to be drawn to his new husband in this forced marriage. It's supposed to be all political, but that doesn't last long as the connection between the two men grows quickly.
I liked this story. It was a quick read and didn't get too angsty. I look forward to reading the next book in the series....more

I like Liam and Seb as a couple, but the story often feels a little forgettable. Also this story really is Seb off on his own stuck in fairy and away from Liam and it caused the story to drag quite a bit. There were elements of the time in fairy that were interesting, but it went on to long and kept us away from the bond that is forming between Liam and Seb.

This was really different and unique. It caught my attention immediately. I really enjoyed this story. I liked the complexity of the situation as Drey was figuring things out just as we were. There's a lot unknown about Tris' species. The only galoi out and about in the universe are all exiles and no one really knows a lot about them. But they are sweet and caring. They excel in ambassador positions. People understand that they have 5 genders, but don't know much more than that.
The mystery aspect of this was simple, but gave a great way for the reveal of things about the galoi. Drey's investigation gave him a chance to not only figure out what happened on the galoi ship but to find out more about the guy he was falling for. Tris was so cute and adorable in his bouncy nature. His need for comfort and connection was very sweet.
I liked how things developed in this story and I can't wait to read more in the series. ...more

The only downside of this story is it's really only a novella. I just wanted more and more. I love Dina and there was something really nice in this story with how discombobulated everyone is after the battle in the last novel. Everyone is struggling to find their place again and even Dina's relationship with the inn is awkward. Of course, she's yet again going to be hosting some extreme forces and needs that stability with the inn in order to get through with everyone safe.
So I love that Gertrude Hunt is now accepting Sean as another innkeeper too. His relationship with Dina is growing and I love how they've grown together. They've learned to trust each other and understand a bit more about each other's strengths.

This fell a little bit short for me in comparison to those two novels. I think a large part of it was that the first half of the book is incredibly slow with nothing happening. Once the action kicked off I was a lot more invested in the story. Cam and Brady have been through a lot when dealing with the Faceless, but being stuck on a Faceless ship in the middle of Faceless battling each other, the poor humans are at a severe disadvantage. I liked the twist a lot though. It definitely put the whole group of humans, Lucy, Doc, and the rest of the crew in a bind as things start to come apart. Brady's mental health takes a bit of a body blow in this story and he's really struggling through being out in the black, but I did enjoy seeing him find himself. This was a case where the author might have taken the element of a "fish out of water" main character a step too far in regards to how that confusion plays out with the reader. Taji is a linguist and as such is working as the translator and cultural guide to the ambassador for the I.P.T.C. to the Sha. But because he really has no clue about the world he's working in and is trying to figure it out has he goes a long, we as an audience are left just as confused for the majority of the book. There were times where a little more clarity would have really helped the reading of the book.
That being said, I did really enjoy the characters and the political intrigue of this story. Taji and Trenne were a fun couple to spend some time with. I liked how things developed between them and the cultural misunderstanding that results in the opportunity for Taji to get a chance with Trenne in the first place. I think the thing that bothered me the most though was that even if Trenne wasn't exactly Sha, he still understood and knew a heck of a lot more than Taji did about things and the language and yet doesn't ever just sit down and try to give him pointers or explain things. He just lets Taji bumble around until he runs into trouble. Sure it set up the plot to work at various times, but just didn't make logical sense since Trenne wasn't forced to be working for the ambassador as a reluctant security. He made the choice to leave for the I.P.T.C and has been with them for awhile fighting in different battles around the galaxies. So why he doesn't pull Taji aside, even in the beginning and work with him to give him a better understanding of the dynamics at play never really made sense to me. He may not have understood everything being from the caste he was, but he certainly got more of what was going on and why people were fighting over Taji than Taji did.
I really enjoyed this story though and was definitely drawn in trying to figure out all of the political and social ramifications of what was going on. There were some really quality elements of world building here and a few things that got muddled a bit because as I said I felt like things tried to too hard to keep you as the reader as confused as Taji was by the world the was forced to navigate. It felt too often like people just let him bumble when they could have explained just so Taji could have an ah ha! moment. ...more

This is another great addition in this series. I wasn't sure how I was going to like being on a new planet not Regelence on Englor, but Skye was awesome. I liked the Highlands and we found a few people we knew were missing. ;) I had this particular tidbit figured out before things got revealed, but it still made me giddy knowing it was coming.
I really enjoyed getting to know Bannon a little bit more. He's so far been a fun sidekick to all of the main younger royals antics. He was the buddy not the star. I liked seeing him come into his own. He realizes how much stronger he can be than he thinks he is. Also Ciaran was a great addition to the series. He's had such trauma to deal with in such a short time. The attacks on his home have been growing and he's left to struggle to find away through on his own. Bannon's ship crashing on their planet breaks open some leads on to what is really going on with these new attacks on Skye. Which in turn illuminates more of what the IN is truly up to.
I liked Ciaran and Bannon together. Both young men are thrown into situations they weren't ready for but are determined to help their people. They're a good support for each other. They come from very different backgrounds, but yet have similar ideas of whats important. The Highlands are much more brutal than anything Bannon had to deal with growing up on Regelence. Adapting his thoughts to this harsher climate is something he has to faces while getting closer to Ciaran. Ciaran needs to learn how to trust more in his own capabilities as laird. He doesn't feel quite able to step into his fathers shoes yet.
