Qui Daniel entra in possesso di un libro "maledetto" che cambierà il corso della sua vita, introducendolo in un labirinto di intrighi legati alla figura del suo autore e da tempo sepolti nell'anima oscura della città.
Vi dico subito che mi è piaciuto molto. È romanzo costruito con cura, che mostra l’eredità lasciata dei grandi scrittori del passato, da Dickens a Dumas, passando per Hugo, e rivela una forte influenza del romanzo gotico. Si tratta inoltre di un romanzo di iniziazione per antonomasia: il romanzo picaresco, che nasce in Spagna con il Lazarillo de Tormes; e in fondo la storia di Daniel Sempere altro non è che un’avventura picaresca, un percorso a tratti doloroso attraverso la vita, che lo conduce alla maturità e alla consapevolezza. Il suo amore per Bea, l’amicizia persa e ritrovata con il fratello di lei, sono lo specchio di una storia di anni precedenti che aveva visto protagonisti Julian Carax, uno scrittore incompreso, autore di un romanzo che dà il titolo all’opera di Zafón.
È un romanzo nel romanzo, anzi più romanzi nel romanzo, se si considerano altre vicende e altri personaggi collaterali. E proprio i personaggi sono così ben raccontati e caratterizzati da rappresentare la parte più bella del romanzo. Impossibile non adorare alla follia lo straordinario Fermin, ma bisogna dire che il protagonista lascia un po’ a desiderare; Daniel risulta purtroppo un po’ piatto, un semplice mezzo per sviluppare il racconto. Ecco, sul personaggio di Daniel, Zafón poteva fare oggettivamente di meglio.
Le ambientazioni sono splendidamente descritte tra le pagine del romanzo: questa Barcellona cupa e tetra, avvolta nel mistero, ci racconta di un periodo difficile della storia spagnola, che passa attraverso la seconda guerra mondiale e il regime franchista. La stessa Barcellona, impressa nell’immaginario collettivo con gli smaglianti colori di Gaudì o di Mirò, assume invece le fosche tinte della nebbiosa, fumosa e umida Londra raccontata da Charles Dickens.
La trama è avventurosa, piacevole, e le pagine scorrono via rapidamente. Il vero messaggio, sia pure subliminale, consiste nella certezza che la letteratura, la pagina scritta, le parole hanno forse più vita degli esseri viventi. Esse si animano e si rianimano ogni volta che qualcuno le sfoglia o le legge. La pagina scritta può contenere in sé il dono dell’eternità, può entrare in sintonia col lettore, rappresentare le sue speranze o le sue delusioni.
