Indubbiamente un capolavoro assoluto, anche se lungo e a tratti difficile da digerire; un romanzo straordinariamente audace e controverso, che ci trasIndubbiamente un capolavoro assoluto, anche se lungo e a tratti difficile da digerire; un romanzo straordinariamente audace e controverso, che ci trasporta nel cuore oscuro della Seconda Guerra Mondiale attraverso gli occhi di Maximilien Aue, un ex ufficiale delle SS che riflette sulla sua vita e sul suo coinvolgimento nei crimini di guerra nazisti, in particolare nell'Olocausto. Ho sempre letto romanzi che raccontavano queste vicende dal punto di vista opposto, e trovarsi davanti a questi stessi eventi raccontati dalla diretta voce dei carnefici, fa oggettivamente un certo effetto.
Il romanzo si apre con Aue che vive in esilio in Francia dopo la fine della guerra. Attraverso i suoi ricordi riviviamo l'ascesa e la carriera del protagonista nelle SS, i suoi compiti all'interno della macchina nazista e la sua diretta partecipazione agli orrori della pulizia etnica avvenuta durante l'Operazione Barbarossa e nei campi di concentramento. Questa parte è una delle cose più stomachevoli che abbia mai letto, tanto che in alcuni momenti ho preferito fare una pausa per prendere fiato e lasciar sedimentare ciò che avevo appena letto. La prosa di Littell è decisamente cruda, e cattura in modo potente e feroce tutto l'orrore e la brutalità della guerra e dell'Olocausto nazista. Il narratore, che prima di scrivere il romanzo ha fatto un incredibile lavoro di ricerca storica durato oltre tre anni, traccia di Aue un ritratto chiaramente debitore alla "Banalità del male" della Arendt. Littell esplora in maniera profonda e senza compromessi la mente di un individuo moralmente contorto e corrotto: Aue è infatti un personaggio colto e intelligente, con un interesse per la filosofia e la letteratura, ma è anche profondamente disturbato. La narrazione di Littell ci costringe inevitabilmente a confrontarci con la natura stessa del male e della responsabilità individuale, ponendoci domande scomode sulla nostra capacità di comprendere e affrontare gli orribili atti che un essere umano è in grado di commettere.
Oltre al protagonista, il romanzo presenta una serie di personaggi intriganti e sfaccettati, tra cui l'amico e collega di Aue, Thomas Hauser, e sua sorella gemella Una, la cui presenza aggiunge ulteriore complessità alla storia. Il mio personaggio preferito è però senza dubbi il linguista Voss, grazie al quale Littell ci regala le pagine più belle di questo libro. In una sorta di dialogo platonico infatti, Aue discute con questo strano professore, cercando di venire a capo delle differenze culturali tra le varie popolazioni dell’Ucraina, scivolando via via che la conversazione va avanti nell’impossibilità di definire cos’è un ebreo, cosa un cosacco, cosa un russo, cosa un tedesco. A dir poco sublime. Altro pezzo molto forte e toccante del racconto è di sicuro quello di Stalingrado. E' stato impressionante leggere questo passaggio del romanzo, che passo dopo passo mi riportava alla mente la straordinaria dilogia di Vassilij Grossman, "Stalingrado" e "Vita e Destino". E' stato come se i racconti avessero trovato una qualche congiunzione nella mia testa.
"Le benevole" è un'esperienza di lettura molto intensa e coinvolgente. La capacità di Littell di mettere in scena la mente di un individuo così moralmente distorto e di farci confrontare con la sua pur presente umanità, ci costringe a riflettere sulle profondità oscure della psiche umana e sulla nostra capacità di comprendere e accettare il male che alberga nelle persone. È un libro che lascia un'impressione duratura, ma che non è certamente adatto a tutti per i suoi temi particolarmente difficili e scomodi....more

Nel suo minuziosissimo lavoro di ricerca, l’autore sfata con grande e ammirevole obiettività diversi miti, opere e frasi attribuite e alimentate nel corso degli ultimi 200 anni sia dai sostenitori che dai detrattori di Bonaparte.
Considerato il volume di 1.000 pagine, consiglio la lettura di quest’opera solo ed esclusivamente a grandi appassionati di storia europea, soprattutto militare, e a chiunque voglia approfondire, per motivi di studio o per passione, la vita di Napoleone....more

Un po’ la stessa impressione che mi aveva dato Delillo con “Rumore bianco”. Le situazioni raccontate si susseguono portandoci rapidamente in un mondo quasi irrealistico, pseudo-assurdo. I tre racconti sono paradossali, ma è quel paradosso un po' malato che non mi ha convinto, come se a scriverle fosse qualcuno in una situazione di grande confusione mentale. La città di New York, che fa parte del titolo, non appare, se non per rappresentare una qualsiasi città caotica, piena di rumore e confusione, ma anche di silenzio e di solitudine. Una città dove una persona può scomparire per 4-5 mesi, vivere nei bidoni della spazzatura e quando torna nella sua casa in affitto la trova abitata da altre persone, perché il proprietario, non ricevendo più il canone mensile, ha affittato l'appartamento a qualcun altro. Insomma, ho trovato le storie un po’ troppo surreali, quasi solo un pretesto per parlare di psicoanalisi e alienazione. (Perché non farne un saggio, caro Paul Auster?)
Nessuno dei racconti dà al lettore la soddisfazione di trovare un senso conclusivo a ciò che ha appena letto, e forse il mio problema sta proprio lì, non essere riuscito a dare un senso logico e conclusivo a questa trilogia. I misteri non vengono svelati, e tutto finisce nel nulla.

Ambientato in età vittoriana, questo grande romanzo restituisce in maniera eccelsa usi e costumi dell'epoca, tinteggiati di modernità ed emancipazione, il tutto condito da uno stile intenso e travolgente. È un romanzo di formazione che non lascia spazio al pietismo o alle recriminazioni, con una protagonista che accetta la sua condizione senza distribuire colpe e inizia il suo percorso di vita spinta dai propri ideali e dai propri valori.
Ma andiamo alla trama: la piccola Jane, bambina perspicace, intelligente e sveglia, passa i primi anni della sua vita in compagnia dello zio e della terribile famiglia di lui, che l’ha adottata in seguito alla scomparsa dei genitori. Sono anni difficili, fatti di soprusi, angherie e punizioni, che segnano inevitabilmente il percorso di crescita di Jane. In questa prime pagine ciò che più appare chiaro è il temperamento di Jane, il suo senso di giustizia e l'oppressione che quattro mura, per quanto delimitino una superficie ampia, possono incarnare. Scendendo in profondità, senza fermasi al piano narrativo, seppur coinvolgente, troviamo la rappresentazione, che poi si farà critica nel proseguo del romanzo, della società vittoriana: regole ferree, disciplina, moralità, spesso seguite in modo devoto, ma in contrasto con i sentimenti più profondi, spesso meschini, repressi e soppressi, che esplodono in tutta la loro forza in punto di morte, quasi per lavarsi da ogni peccato di fronte ad essa. La tumultuosa vita di Jane prosegue poi nel ruolo di istitutrice presso la casa del ricco Rochester, il cinico e scontroso padrone che finisce per innamorarsi di lei. Ma un grande e terribile segreto si cela all’interno di casa Rochester, un segreto destinato a scolvogere le vite dei personaggi.
“Jane Eyre” è una bellissima e profonda storia, narrata in prima persona dalla voce delicata della protagonista, un racconto che la lega al lettore dalla prima all’ultima pagina; un racconto che appassiona e commuove, che stupisce, irrita e fa gioire. La grande abilità della scrittrice sta nel descrivere accuratamente luoghi, eventi, caratteri, emozioni e tutti quegli elementi che fanno da cornice al racconto. La penna di Charlotte Brontë è ciò che rende questo classico un capolavoro intramontabile. Il lessico è curatissimo, con un registro alto, una scrittura scorrevole, piacevole, a tratti poetica che allieterebbe ogni lettore. ...more

La Storia del ‘900 avvolge tutta la narrazione di questo romanzo, ed è impressionante vedere come i personaggi siano fortemente toccati dalle tragiche vicende in corso durante le loro vite. La prima metà del romanzo è semplicemente straordinaria: i personaggi di Stasia, Christine e Kitty sono davvero molto profondi, ben caratterizzati e a dir poco indimenticabili. Solo questa parte, a mio avviso, vale la lettura dell’intero romanzo. Dalla metà del libro in poi ammetto che la scrittrice mi ha un po’ perso per strada; ho fatto un po’ più fatica ad empatizzare con le vicende dei personaggi narrati e ho percepito una certa lentezza nell’evoluzione della trama. A mio avviso non il capolavoro che tutti decantano; a tratti infatti l’ho trovato eccessivamente melodrammatico, un po’ inverosimile e prolisso nella seconda metà, ma resta in ogni caso una bella lettura che mi sento di consigliare. ...more
