Have you met the person of your dreams? Do you have the rest of your life with this person planned out? What would you do if you lost them? Not to a death, not to another person, but to themselves? Could you move on? Would you move on?
Changing Course is the Story of Detective Brett Sharp and Sarah Sharp, his wife of 7 years and how one faithful night changed the rest of their lives. Brett met Sarah in a bar and he knew he had to get to know her, and once her got to know her, he fell for her Hard. She became his wife and they were happy. Then one night, one split decision, and one tragedy later, Brett lost his wife. Sarah, Case,y and Manda were best friends. They went everywhere together and they shared everything. On the night that Sarah met Brett, Manda and Casey were her wingmen, and they were staple pieces throughout their entire relationship. Until they weren't.
On the night that Brett Sharp lost everything, it had begun as any other night and it ended with one girl dead, one friend heartbroken and his wife trapped within her guilt. Sarah and Manda were in a car accident, and it is assumed that Sarah was the driver, even though she does not remember the accident itself. Over the next several months, Brett tries to help her get over her grief, not just for herself, but because he wants his wife back. He fails, and after three suicide attempts, he decides to give her just what she has been asking for... SPACE.
4 years later... Brett is still holding onto hope that his wife will one day be herself again and they can pick up the pieces and move on... Until he meets Jesse.
Jesse James Addison is a game changer literally. Where Sarah was tall, she is petite, where Sarah was the life of the party, Jesse is shy and timid. Where Sarah is vindictive, Jesse is loving and compassionate. Jesse is a barista at the coffee house that Brett visits every morning with his good friend Caleb, who happens to be Manda's fiancé at the time of the accident. (Did I mention, he hates Sarah and blames her for the accident.) Jesse asks Brett to a Bears game and even though he is hesitant, with the persistence of Caleb, he goes, and his hold world changes....
Brett tells Jesse that he is broken and he can not promise her anything for the future, but Jesse refuse to give up on Brett. There are even a few encounters with Sarah, that have Jesse really wondering if she can see this relationship with Brett through. She gives her all, she is a fighter, not in the I will punch you in your face type of fighter, but the I will be here to remind you how wonderful you are and how great life can be if you just let me in type of fighter. She even says I Love You first.
Finally, Brett comes to his senses and realizes that he loves Jesse and he does not want to live without her... And he tells her, and proves it to her... Then Sarah ha to go and screw things up again...
I wont spoil the story for you, but I truly feel like this is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The characters are real and relatable and the emotions they feel, you feel. There are some sad times in the story, but there are sad times in life and I think that is what makes this feel real. I feel for Jesse, because I can understand her. I understand loving someone who doesn't realize just how loveable they are and how broken they are. I understand standing by someone's side when they can not make you any promises. I understand loving someone else more than they love me. I also understand Brett and his desire to help Sarah, even when it is hurting him. I respect some of Brett's decisions, and don't understand others, but I grew to love him. I definitely loved him with Jesse.
I am excited for the next two books in this series, and I will not be disappointed if Sarah does not make any more appearances (some people do not deserve redemption). I look forward to seeing if Caleb finds his own happiness, and Kara, how can I forget about Kara? I have really high hopes for Kara and her future!!! I can not wait to see Casey and what she has been up to.
If you have not read this book, you should. Aly Martinez is an author to be on the look out for. Favorite Quotes: By the time she finally finished evicting her organs into the toilet, I may have made an agreement with the powers above to name my first born Hephzibah just to make her stop.
"Nah, I'm still seeing Lisa. She would lose her crazy monkey shit if she thought I was even looking at Jesse." "You need to cut that one loose. Preferably before you end up chopped into tiny pieces, buried under her floorboards."
"How about we bet one favor, to be decided upon later." "What kind of favor?" she asks skeptically. "Anything. Who knows this time next week you could be doing my laundry." "Oh, those kind of favors! Okay! I'm in!" She actually squeals in excitement making me a little fearful of her enthusiasm. But as she jumps around clapping her hands, I can’t help but laugh too. God she's beautiful!
"Fine, I don't need details, but you have to at least compare it to a vegetable it resembles. I bet it’s a large zucchini." She smiles, staring off into space lost in her imagination. "If it will make you more comfortable, I'll start. That guy Jason I was seeing last week, was a small carrot. I'm talking the baby ones you dip in ranch dressing." She winks as I stare at her with my lips curled in disgust.
“Yes,” she finally whisper against my lips. It’s more than a word. It’s a life, a future, and more than I will ever deserve. It’s forever.

Have you ever read a stor 3.5 Did this author not get enough hugs as a child, or is she really depressed, because this book is really depressing STARS
Have you ever read a story or book and just felt like the author must be a sadomasochist or in need of a hug? Well if you haven't, this is your opportunity, and if you have, then you will understand this review.
This is NOT a love story. No, it is not. This is a story of the horrors that occur in one person's life and no matter what, he can not seem to catch a break.
Jacob, or Jake, has dealt with the death of his mother during his senior year in high school as well as the betrayal of his "first love". It has been 2 years, and he has not been able to move on, until Lili...
Lili comes in and breaks down walls and guards that Jake has around his heart. She has become his light at the end of the tunnel and his little ray of hope in this crazy world. Just when you think you know where this story is headed, you are hit with a right hook. A ghost comes back from the past and it threatens to ruin what Jake has with Lili.
Crisis averted and the next thing you know, here comes a double whammy, and its a doozy. At this point, you believe that this is a work of fiction so of course, a miracle will happen. No such luck.
The book ends on am optimistic note, but its not believable. So overall, the entire book is depressing with slithers of glimpses of happiness and hope. I have read sad and depressing stories before (The Fault in Our Stars), but this didn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy, it made me feel like I was watching the local news or the ID channel, and has you wanting to give up on love and humanity. I read as a means of an outlet, and when the story you read is worse than what is going on in the world around you, then maybe its missed its mark.
So to those of you who choose to read this, May the odds Ever be in your Favor. The writing is good, and the characters are likeable and believable, but I doubt if I will read another novel by Ms. Hughes. ...more

Full Review to come but my thoughts right now, I am not a fan of Lili at all... And I really think if Loren, could let Lili go, he would be able to have a productive life....
Okay so let me say, I hate rating a book low. It takes a lot of hard work and effort and more importantly, courage to bring your characters to life and share them with others. Now with that being said, I was very disappointed in this book. I had high expectations because I had heard so many great things and this was not the instant love that so many books have. Not to mention but both main characters have problems, serious problems.... Addictions. Lili is addicted to sex. Sex with strangers mainly. She has to have it and when she is not having it, she is watching others have it, in the form of porn. The opening scene is Lily waking up in a strangers room and trying to remember his name and the night before. There are several encounters such as this throughout the book. She hooks up with a random guy in the bathroom of a bar, and even brings two random guys back to her apartment one night.
Loren Hale is addicted to alcohol. He is rarely sober and in those times that he is, he doesn't enjoy it. He and Lili have been in a "fake" relationship for the past 3 years, because their families are really close and it makes sense. Neither of their families are aware of their addictions. Loren is always rescuing Lily and trying to keep her from slipping to far.
Loren and Lili are tricked into having to go on a family vacation, and it is during this time that Loren presents Lily with the option of "letting him be everything she needs" or breaking off "their relationship" if she sleeps wit one of the deck hands. Lili gives in and she and Loren begin a real relationship. Lily is concerned that she will not be able to stay faithful and then she will truly lose Loren, not just the relationship but her closest friend.
Now for why I gave this book such a low rating.... Alcoholism, I can understand. I can relate, because I know people who have battled the addiction; some who were successful and some who were not. Loren was abandoned by his mother and his father is verbally and at times, physically abusive and an alcoholic himself, so I can understand how Loren got to this point. Lili on the other hand... I can not understand her reasoning for being addicted to sex. She comes off as spoiled and privileged and because she is not the "center of attention" in her family, she decides to seek that attention from random strangers. I was really hoping that this book would change my mind on sex addiction, but it didn't. It made me feel like Lili was just a "slut" and trying to give her promiscuous behavior a pretty name so she could continue to live the way she wanted to. I am not buying it. Also, I felt like Lili was holding Loren down. Loren needs someone who can bring him out of his darkness, and in reality, Lili is not that person. She is entirely too selfish, and she can not see how her wild behavior is affecting Loren. I know that Loren is committed to Lili, and wont leave her, but I wish that he would. She is not deserving of him. I think had Loren been able to break away from Lili, he would be able to clean up his act entirely and move on, but when two "addicts" are trying to overcome their own vises, it harder to help the other. I wont be reading the next books, I am not interested in seeing how this hold thing pans out.

The two became friends when Trevor's brother Asher began dating and then marrying Liz's friend November. one night after drinks, things heated up between the two, and when one word was whispered in the dark, their entire friendship changed... "Never...."
Trevor wants Liz, but he believes that she is too good of a girl for him. She is everything he is not, pure, kind, sweet and easy going. While he has always been a little hot tempered, and a playboy. Trevor discovers that Liz is working at the local exotic night club, and he determines that no matter how sweet Liz may be, she has to be his. Only problem is figuring out how to mend the relationship he has broken and get her to see that he is serious. “I love you. Don’t ever doubt that you’re the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
Liz, has grown up in this town, and knows all the people. She has never been the girl to turn heads and she has never been in the "in crowd" but she has found herself and she is happy with who she is and where she is in life. She knows the Mayson brothers and knows they are notorious for being ladies men, but she can not help seeing Trevor Mayson as something more. She thinks that maybe they have something special and maybe he could be someone she could be with. Then just when she thinks that they are going to move from friends to lovers, things change between her and Trevor, and she thinks everything that she thought about the two of them was actually wrong. Liz is hiding a secret from her mother and she has some residual feelings from her father's death that are keeping her from being happy. Trevor is determined to find out Liz's secret and help her in any way he can and he is determined to make her feel loved. Trevor's past also comes back to try and ruin what he has with Liz.
“I’m glad she has you.” Tears start filling her eyes. “When John died, she took it hard. They were so close; she was a daddy’s girl from the day we found out we were having a little girl. Her dad would lay with his face on my stomach, telling her stories. When we brought her home from the hospital, she wasn’t happy unless he was holding her. Even as she got older, if he was going somewhere, she wanted to be with him."
Until Trevor, made me swoon, and the way he fought for Liz made me smile. I love the Mayson brothers and I love the Mayson family. I thought it was completely adorable when Trevor, helped Asher feed July... Two hot alpha males feeding one infant baby girl. I also love that they adopted a dog, Lolly. I am a sucker for dogs!!!

5 Stars for anyone who has a soft spot for soldiers and awkward girls who eventually become swans... And their sarcastic cousins, who light up the world.
Fern and Bailey are first cousins and they have been through everything together including the worsening of Bailey's MD. Fern never leaves his side and Bailey is grateful. Bailey has such an uplifting spirit and he refuses to let his disease make him or break him. he refuses to let his disease dim his light. Fern is the awkward, not pretty in the traditional way type of girl. She reads the Bible, her dad's a pastor, and romance novels, shes a fan of Nora Roberts, and even writes her own under a pen name. She has what Bailey has coined as UGS (Ugly girl Syndrome). He tells Ambrose about his theory but he also lets Ambrose know that Fern is a true find "Fern doesn't have a clue how pretty she is. That makes her priceless. Make sure you snatch her up before she clues into her good looks, Brosey."
They live in a small town in Pennsylvania, where wrestling is King. Bailey's dad is the wrestling coach and all Bailey has ever wanted to do was wrestle, but never will he (view spoiler)[ Except for the one match he has with Ambrose when they are 11, and he pins him... (hide spoiler)] Ambrose, is the captain of the wrestling team and has taken his team to the State Championship 4 years in a row. Everyone expects Ambrose to go to Penn States to wrestle, until something tragic happens and Ambrose's plans change as well as his course. Sept. 11, 2001 shock an entire nation, and Ambrose along with four of his friends, Paulie, Beans, Jesse, and Grant all enlist in the US Army and are sent off to Iraq, and Ambrose is the only one to come home.
But Ambrose does not come home the way he left. No longer is he the Greek god who left, now he is the Beast that has returned. He is disfigured and he is ashamed that he is the one to return. he feels guilt over the death of his friends because it was his urging that got the others to go in the first place.
Fern has loved Ambrose since they were kids, and her love has only grown as they have aged. She loved him so much so, that she was even willing to write notes to him for her friend Rita, and when it came out that it was her, Ambrose was hurt. She prayed for his safe return and when he does make it home, she is ready and willing to welcome home home with open arms. "I promised myself that if you made it back, I wouldn't be afraid to tell you how I felt. But I am still afraid, because I can't make you love me back." At first, Ambrose is hesitant, but over time Fern and Bailey win him over and he becomes part of their odd trio. Fern and Bailey nurse Ambrose back to health in a way he did not expect. He falls in love with Fern. (view spoiler)[ Ambrose kisses Fern the night before he deploys, but she thinks its a cruel joke, because he is drunk when he does it. (hide spoiler)]
This book is not without tragedy, and the tragedy strikes right at the core of this book and leaves you heartbroken. the upside of the tragedy is that the actions of the individual were so much inline with his character that you grieved over the loss, but you could accept it. (view spoiler)[ Bailey was always meant to die. He had MD and no one expected him to see 21, but to drown in an irrigation drain because he tried to help Rita.... I could not get over it, I wanted to climb in the book and kill Becker with my own 2 hands. I loved Bailey, and I hated that Rita was too selfish to see how much he loved her. (hide spoiler)]
"I will add you to my list"
and just as you are recovering from one tragedy, something else happens, and you do not know if you will make it... I cried like a baby for approx 25 pages... I could not believe what was happening, but Amy Harmon makes it up to you.
Everything wraps up with a fabulous conclusion... I even cried in the epilogue.
"If God made all our faces, did he laugh when He made me?... Is it okay to blame Him, when I do not like what I see?"
"I wrote your name across my heart so we could be together, so I could hold you close to me and keep you forever."
I related to this book in so many ways, and it broke my heart time and time again. I recommend everyone read this book. It may quite possibly be the best book I have read all year. ...more
