"Trust has to begin somewhere. For peace to take hold, one person must first stop fighting."
Horde is the third book in the Razorland series. At the "Trust has to begin somewhere. For peace to take hold, one person must first stop fighting."
Horde is the third book in the Razorland series. At the end of Outpost, Deuce, Tegan, Fade and Stalker were leaving Salvation in the middle of the night in a hope they could find help in another territory to save Salvation from the Horde of Freaks that just outside the gate.
Horde picks up just where Outpost left off, and it takes you through the course of the next year, which entails a lot of fighting as well as gaining knowledge about themselves and their enemies.
These Freaks are not the Freaks from down under, and it is clear by their actions, these Freaks are developing and they are becoming more human like everyday. At one point, Deuce is confronted by one of these new Freaks, and he wants to cease the fighting just as much as she does, and Deuce must make a decision to align with the new Freaks in order to beat the horde of old Freaks. The battle that ensues, many believe can not be won, but Deuce and Fade are unwilling to go down without a fight... They must at least try.
There was a lot of worry that Fade and Deuces relationship would not survive his capturing in Outpost and his PTSD, but deuce refuses to let Fade go... She believes in their love even when he doesn't.... She makes sure that she tells him and shows him that her love is unwavering, and it prevails. I truly enjoyed seeing their relationship unfold, and I am truly glad they got their HEA. (view spoiler)[ Their first time the night before the battle... So sweet... And Deuce's inter dialogue, priceless. (hide spoiler)] If there were ever two characters that deserved a HEA, its these two. I also enjoyed seeing Deuce develop. She is no longer simply a Huntress, but rather a fully developed and rounded young woman who knows her priorities and is willing to do whatever it takes to get them.
"I feared a love like this. That made us incomplete without each other. It was beautiful but treacherous like snow that looked white and pure and lovely from the safety of your window, but when you stepped out to touch the softness, the cold first stole your breathe, and then your will to move, until you could just lay down in it and let the numbness take you."
I also enjoyed seeing Fade, find himself again. Fade doesn't want to bring deuce or the mission down by his fear of not being enough. Fade proves himself multiple times over and slowly regains the person he had lost. He proves his love for Deuce as well even when he is unable to actually show it.... "Though his arms remained at his side, Fade whispered, "this is me holding you, and this is me kissing you for good luck." When Fade thought the Horde had taken Deuce, he was ready to go to war even though he knew they could not win. he was not completely whole by the end, but that is the reality of going through something that traumatic, it changes you and you may never be able to go back to who you are 100%, and thats okay. He does his best to be everything Deuce needs and more.
We are introduced to several new characters including Gavin, Morgan, Colonel, Morrow, Spence and Tully. I absolutely loved Gavin. He broke my heart and put it back together again. Morrow also won my heart, he was Deuce except he was older and more well traveled. We saw more of Rex, and Momma Oaks and Edmund, who makes sure that Fade does right by his little girl, are here as well. And we were reunited with some old friend as well (one of the best surprises of the series).
There is some tragedy in this novel, I mean they are at war. but the tragedy, is redeeming en nature, and though we lose a friend(s), it is done in a way that makes you feel okay and understand it was necessary.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dystopias or young adult novels. Ann Aquirre knows how to write a novel and give you everything you need.
Side note: Ann Aquirre should really give some lessons to Veronica Roth on how to wrap up a series as well as self sacrifice. I got more out of this novel on the concept of self sacrifice than I did in Allegiant.
"If this is the last time, let me say it so you never forget. I will always love you, Deuce. No matter where souls go, mine will be looking for you, Solnyshko Moyo. No. I want a promise instead. Promise you'll fight like you never have, so when the dying stops, you'll be on your feet looking for me here. I swear."...more
I have to admit that I am love with this book. I loved Deuce and Fade and I am SOOO glad she made it clear to Stalker early on that things weren't goiI have to admit that I am love with this book. I loved Deuce and Fade and I am SOOO glad she made it clear to Stalker early on that things weren't going anywhere between them. I can never get over Stalker being a rapist and I will never see him as a love interest. Plus, he feels very manipulative to me... For instance, when Deuce was going to save Fade and he is all like Kiss me, kiss me before you go... Really, I think that was manipulative, this girl is going to save her boyfriend and all you can think of is getting her to kiss you... Seriously??? Not to mention, he wants her to leave becasue there is nothing to fight or kill in the beginning... Deuce NEEDS the love she finds in Momma Oaks and Edmund, she needs the family unit and she needs Fade...
I did hate that Fade went through what he wet through but I understand his response... Noe did I agree with it, no, but I understand it. Think of how many soliders we send to war and who see something that none of their training has prepared them for and come home to the ones they love and they do not know how to express what is going on with them? Ever stop to think that maybe he is traumatized because he being captured made him feel weak? Made him feel like he was no longer "STRONG" enough to be what Deuce needs? Maybe he isn't ready to tell Deuce everything that happened? Maybe he doesnt want to feel like she pities him? Maybe he is traumatized because of what he saw becasue he is tired of having to fight for his right to live and wants to settle down and be happy, and seeing the Freaks and what they have planned for the humans makes him lose hope... There is nothing wrong with that especially if he is in love and wants more than to be a hunter for the rest of his days... Not to mention he is 18 years old... Grown men couldnt handle some of what he has seen and he is being called weak for taking a step back and trying to figure things out for himself.
I am glad the Deuce is in t for the long haul. Fade needs that and she will prove that love can prevail even in the worse of situations... I hope that their persistence is rewarded in book 3.
I am anxious for Horde... I hope that they find what they are looking for and eliminate the Freaks and I hope they find a home......more
First off, let me start by saying I LOVED Divergent and Insurgent!!! I recommneded both books to friends and WARNING: SPOLIERS AHEAD as well as RANT
First off, let me start by saying I LOVED Divergent and Insurgent!!! I recommneded both books to friends and I was so EXCITED for Allegiant... So this is not some knee jerk reaction becasue the series didn't end the way I felt that it should.
Now for my review...
Overall, the book sucked!!! Yup, it sucked!!! Ms Roth's writing style has always been slightly amateur, and that's okay, this was her first series, but this book, felt rushed and it wasnt put together, and it seemes like the things she wanted to touch on, she drug out but the things that needed to be drugged out, were quickly resolved an swept under the rug... Also the pace of this book, just felt OFF.. It was as fast paced as the previous two and it took a while to get into the dual POVs. The cahracter development was questionable to say the least and there were so many WTF moments, and one minute something that could never happen happens and then the next, something that is actually plausable does'nt occur, because that would be the right thing to do.
SPOILERS AHEAD... SERIOUSLY, ALOT OF SPOLIERS
The whole concept that it was the federal government and they were some "experiment" and they have always been in Chicago... CRAP-O-LA
Then the resolution of this ENTIRE war comes down to Four (Tobias) saying to his mother "its me or the city?" Seriously? Evelyn walked away from the power of being ruler, the same power that she has been fighting for for 2 ENTIRE books, just to be a mum? Then there is ONE, you heard me ONE conversation where Johanna, Marcus, Evelyn and FOur meet, agree to terms and everyone lives HEA!!! Marcus walks away, with no fight? Just walk away, to never be heard of again... If this was the case, WHY, did there need to be a third book to begin wiht? Four could have had this come to Jesus with his mother at the end of book 2, and everyone could have moved on... Right?
The serums... So anytime you want to control people or conjur up a few deaths in a "humane way" just come up with a serum to meet your goal... Yeah, that's the key to ruling the world...
Uriah dies... For nothing... And his mother and brother, Zeke, have to pull him off life support.. That was fun!!!
Four cheats on Tris...
Then the biggest crockery of the entire book... TRIS'S DEATH So Caleb, Tris's brother, yeah the one who betrayed her and her family, the one who got off so easily after Evelyn's interigation, has been chosen to die... First productive thing in the entire book, and guess what, Tris can not live with the thought of letting her brother go to his death over his guilt, so she goes instead... How ironic? Tris's death does not surprise me... I mean it surprised me in the sense that Ms Roth killed off her main character, the narrator for the past 2 books, but Tris actually taking it upon herself to go to her death, not surprising. I read where so many people say she sacrificed for the better good, and that Ms Roths Christian background played a role in showing how Tris was a sacrifical lamb and her death bettered the people... I am pro Jesus, but Tris is NO JESUS in any way!!! In fact, I see her more as a suicidal terrorist... Now hear me out, since Divergent, any time there was a chance for someone to die for the casue, Tris signed herself up... ALL of Insurgent, Tris was willing and ready to die... She even turned herself in, so she could die. No matter how much Tobias begged and pleaded ith her to sit this one out or stay if nothing else but for him, she refused... If Ms Roth wanted to be bold, Tris should have LIVED!!! Why? because Dying is easy, LIVING is HARD... yeah, she would have seen her brother die, and maybe she would have felt some guilt over it, but we all have things that we regret in our past... Tobias needed her, and she left him.. And then for what? Her death didnt change anything that happened in the plot nor did it change the course of events in the story, so she died... She died from multiple bullets, alone, and for what? In my opinion, not Ms Roth's best move...
Then Tobias, because of everyhting, he wants to let forget everything that happened.. He has been changed for the worst... In the Epilogue, he no longer wants to fight or use guns becasue he now wants to use his words... The man is broken, and he can not be repaired... And a politician, assistant, no less... Umm, yeah not really sure how I feel about this. The man I loved becasue he only had 4 fears now has five and has been reduced to the fearful child he was while living with Marcus rather than the Dauntless leader he had become... I am sorry Four.
I read somewhere that Ms Roth had intended to kill Tris off from the very beginning, and that disheartens me, becasue it puts a damper on my entire view of the series now... Also, you have a movie coming out in the Spring, one that your fan base can make or break and right now, I have no desire to see it... NONE!!!
So to sum it up, I have only given 2 other boks 1 star ratings in my entire life, becasue I believe being a writer has to be one of the hardest things you can do in this worls... writing dystpoia, even harder, but overall, this bok was a big let down and diappointment...
