The gang of characters in this book have buried absurdly deep inside my lil heart, and I love that through every situation they find themselves in, the team stay so connected to each other and the depth of their friendship is completely endless.
HOWEVER, I read to escape the real world, not to experience it in the books I enjoy.... so the obvious political undertone of this whole book made me feel icky down to my core.
Just give me superheroes, the rag tag gang, Nicky's ADHD brain shenanigans, awful dad jokes, cringey sex talks, and let Seth and Nicky kiss.... I do not need or require a 5 minute monologue about police brutality or police corruption and real world issues disguised as an upset parent yelling at another parent for being a cop. It felt weird and unimportant to the story. Police corruption alone would have worked, but it just took it too far to a point it was strange.
I STILL LOVED IT THOUGH, THE BOOK WOULD HAVE BEEN 5 STAR IF THE POLITICS COULD HAVE TAKEN A CHILL PILL, BUT THAT ENDING WAS FUCKING EPIC. [image]...more
okay but like, Alexis Hall SLAYED the whole ✨"grumpy man smiles for the first time and it lights up the room"✨ moment in this book, and the fact tokay but like, Alexis Hall SLAYED the whole ✨"grumpy man smiles for the first time and it lights up the room"✨ moment in this book, and the fact that it was all tied together with silly jokes about fisting a chicken, just really made me forget that I wanted Jonathan to crawl through glass, to get a flat tyre, and to just be generally inconvenienced every day in some way for the rest of his life for being a complete wank-stain for 85% of this book.
(tbh, Jonathon never redeemed himself properly, he just became... "a softer wank-stain with more humility", and NONE of the plot in this story actually resolved itself and felt like it was open for ✨reader interpretations✨, but the 4 stars I give is for that one scene that featured a toy guinea pig in a Christmas hat that was apart of a family Christmas tradition, because that shit was GAG-INDUCING levels of cute ...more

Book 5 was a win!!
I often think people are quick to use the term 'grumpy - sunshine' and quite often, I don't really see those vibes. I need the grumpy to be an actual GRUMP (or give off severe grump vibes for longer than 1 interaction), and not just the sunshine to be sunshining...
TROY IS A FUCKING GRUMP. He is literally ashamed of the person he was (so he should be) and literally worked on himself over the course of this book. He really gets his redemption arc for his homophobic, poor ass behaviour that stemmed from his other team/friend group of homophobic slur-using asshats. I loved the pacing, because Troy is strange and stand offish to everyone including baby boy Harris for quite alot of the build up during this book, which was enjoyable. BECAUSE YOU KNEW HIS DUMB ASS WAS GONNA FALL SO HARD IN LOVE ...more

A great time was had, the ending was wrapped up, the epilogue was definitely a random highlight for me, I'm so happy to have a smol glimpse into the future for Seth/Nicky/Jazz/Gibby, and all together, the book was so nice and wonderful to have the whole gang wrap it up nicely.
I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally wish there was more on page interactions with Seth/Nicky that were just sweet, and not Nicky being weird and Seth shaking his head or loving him anyway. I found there was so much wasted opportunity for feet-swinging cuteness over Seth/Nicky, but honestly, all 3 books kinda let me down on that front. (I'm sorry, I just had to say it, Nicky was alot, and he charmed me, but there was lack of cuteness between him and Seth after they actually realised their feelings in book 1. I saiddddddd what I saidddddd)
HOWEVER, Honestly......... The book is more about the whole plot of characters, and Seth/Nicky whilst also being MC's were almost like... their own side characters because all the side characters, felt like MC'S??????
I'm tired. What am I even writing? I've been in a MASSIVE slump. What day is it?...more
