It was hard for me to find information that's helpful to someone who wasn't in a romantic narc relationship, but was dealing with a covert narc family member. Very informative, helpful, eye opening, and heartfelt. Really helps to kick your brain out of the long term narc programming. I definitely recommend that readers do the exercises in the last chapters. Thank you, Debbie for writing this book!...more

I stopped listening at the point where she was ranting about how much she dislikes conservatives and rich, white males and how anyone who isn't a leftist pains her and she finds them hard to help through her classes... Shut up. The author also painfully displays her own "white guilt." I started listening to a book about personal development and Buddhist teachings, then the dial was turned up high to a bitchy author complaining about other people's politics....more

This book is all about the connection between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), childhood trauma, abuse, and stress and the role it plays in adult illness and autoimmune disease. As someone who has recently been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and having dealt with a great deal of adversity as a child and teenager, I REALLY appreciated this book and the effort that the author put into its content. There were so many times when I thought- "Yup. That's me." and "Oh my god, if only I had known what stress was doing to me." After reading this book I have really stepped back and analyzed my stress levels and I am inspired to be kinder to my mind and body, break the vicious cycle of adversity, and begin to heal....more
I loved this audio book edition! I really loved that it was read by Augusten himself, because no one else could have done this edition justice.
Unlike most self-help authors, Augusten is unapologetic and his brutal honesty is actually…well, helpful. Augsten uses real life examples and relatable stories to provide real-world advice that never feels like a lecture.
Augusten Borroughs’ past memoirs are dark and funny, and to those of you who have loved his other books for that very reason, be warned—this is not like his previous works. The title is a little misleading and sounds like a self-help comedy, but this book is actually very serious and to the point. No bullshit attached.
There is something in this book for everyone. I personally enjoyed his excellent segments about suicide, death, and grief. You get to see Augusten in a way you've never seen him and even though he doesn't coddle the reader, you still find a sense of comfort in his words of wisdom.
Enlightening and highly entertaining! I definitely recommend this one!...more
“The Glass Castle” is an honest and heart wrenching memoir of a life in poverty and the strength it requires to resist its vicious cycle.
This novel reads like a fairytale at times due to Jeannette’s view of her world through an innocent mind and the delusions of her parents, Rex, the entrepreneurial drunk and Rose Mary, the lazy and misguided artist.
The Walls family, consisting of Rex and Rosy Mary Walls and four young children made their way from dusty desert town to dusty desert town looking for wealth but ultimately ended up doing “The Skiddattle” when their debts piled up too high. Rose Mary Walls thought that she was too good for a job in the real world and was destined to be a famous artist, while Rex Walls believed that he would one day hit it big by gambling and searching for gold and would one day build a glass castle for his family and flourish.
The truth was that the Walls family didn’t have much of anything besides a series of run down vehicles which they usually took up residence in, unless they found a dusty little shack to rent in the middle of the desert. The Walls family toured the barren tristate area of Arizona, California, and Nevada and eventually ended up in Phoenix, Arizona and then out east to West Virginia.
They hold their longest residence in West Virginia where the Walls children are molested by their back woods grandparents and bullied by the other kids in their neighborhood. The Walls children suffered at the hands of their delusional, anti-establishment parents that refuse to see the world from anything besides misty eyes and are neglected of basic comforts such as running water, indoor plumbing, indoor heating, electricity, suitable clothing, and frequently having to rummaging through trash cans for food.
As the children grow older and they realize that their father is never going to build the glass castle, they start to check into the reality of their situation. The children must decide to do good for themselves and escape to New York City where they will strive to build their own fortresses.
I loved this book! I was taken by the first page and enticed from start to finish. Memoirs like these force you to look at your own life and to be thankful for everything you have, even if you had to struggle to make it happen....more
