I thought that the original premise of a woman who begins to find her new self at a motel 30 minutes from her home on a sidetrack stop from an alleged cross-country journey.
It started quirky, but the main character becomes so self-centered, self-indulgent, and obsessed with her perceived perimenopausal state that you can’t understand or sympathize with her choices. The book is steamy, too.
I did finish it and experienced some of the novel via audiobook read by the author....more

SANDWICH starts strong with its premise quickly introduced: so many can identify with the annual weeklong family vacation. When the book is honest and authentic, it shines. But, it gets lost in flashbacks, post-menopausal regrets, and many unleashed secrets between Saturday and the following Friday. I did like the cat was named CHICKEN!!...more

After reading it, I can see how it influenced Fosse away from the musical’s original book. As a play, it’s more than okay, but a shadow of Hal Prince’s re-conception of the musical’s source material.
