I think that really comes down to the setting; the mansion (and all its rotting contents) is exquisitely described. The prose is rich but, for the needs of this tale, it generally works.
Initially I found the characters unconvincing and a bit annoying (The author's ear for rich prose doesn't translate to an ear for dialogue) but, about half way through I began to see the point: they're numb and affectless, trust fund kids who have spent their lives hermetically sealed from reality and wrapped in their own little dramas. The haunted mansion and its contents are more real than they are.
If you enjoy atmosphere and setting then Nothing But Blackened Teeth comes highly recommended. Oh yes, I should mention it's often damn spooky too. ...more
