I'm also struggling with Ellis hanging on to feelings for this POS FOR A YEAR. I would maybe understand if it was just a few months, but after a full year, you'd think he'd be almost over it?
I LOVED the rest of the series, and the spin off Swallow Cove book so I'm going to push through a bit further, but I'm STRUGGLING with this one...
EDIT: I'm at the first smex scene at 56%. It's hot, but I STILL don't understand why they're best friends, or why Jordan loves El? Ellis just seems quite self focused. I'm interested to see what happens after this smex scene!...more

My only qualm is that all of a sudden we find out that one of the MCs has ADHD and a sleep disorder that apparently the other MC has known about for months but was never mentioned before?? As someone with ADHD myself, I will say that I really resonated with Quinn's explanations, but none of his previous behaviour in the book tracked for being neurospicy? Again, very strange......more

At 85%, we finally have our first sex scene. I like a slow burn. That's not my issue. It's that I'm at 85% and I... don't understand why these two are falling for each other, beyond that they want to bone, and some very brief trauma bonding over their disabilities.
I don't actually understand why anyone continues to put up with Hudson because frankly he's not just grumpy, he's kinda mean?
And I don't really understand Peyton as a character. Is he the kindest angel in the world? Is he just a bitter people pleaser? And honestly why does he even LIKE Hudson?
They've been at odds, but suddenly they can't stop thinking about each other and are just now using endearments? And Hudson is making Peyton a very expensive custom toy? It's kinda coming out of nowhere, at least for me.
Anyway, the writing is good and I'm not giving Lindsey less than two stars, but this one is tempting (sorry!)...more

I also don't love that Ethan's terrible ex is Asian. I know, I know. Shiv is there, but he's kinda the Fool who treats Ethan like he's stupid...And Ethan can automatically understand most of what Clay says? I get that Clay has a deeper voice, but it's still verrrry convenient, no?

The writing is lovely - though a bit wordy - and I'm loving Charles and Hugo. The emotional intimacy is escalating nicely, so I'm really struggling with whether to just give up and skip to the end?
Does it get better? Should I persevere, or just skip to the last few chapters?

CW:TW for REPEATED use of a homophobic slur, emotional labour being foisted needlessly on a queer person, clueless cis str8 whyte dudes.
This was an absolute delight, until the 86% mark and then the author COMPLETELY lost me. She had me wanting to throw my damn phone at the effing wall in anger. I don't want to even finish this because I'm so mad at Ryan and the author, who I now suspect is some "nice straight whyte lady" who decided that it might be fun to write queer characters. Which is ACTUALLY a homophobic microaggression. Don't speak for my community if you're not part of it, k?
Reading Ryan's cluelessness about why it's a big deal that ***10 year olds*** shouldn't use the "f" word for queer folks just because HE'D been called that on the ice, and why we shouldn't pass down homophobia to kids was unforgivable.
Unfortunately, it was a very good example of the kinds of conversations I've had to have with cis people, the kind of emotional labour I've had to do with them (I'm queer myself, and it's EXHAUSTING. Also it's not my job. Str8 cis people, please educate your own, because us LGBTQIA2S folks are burnt out and SCARED right now).
I'm pansexual, which means that I date ANYONE, regardless of gender, genita|s, or sexual orientation so I've dated plenty of cis str8 dudes. This author reminded me of why I haven't dated any cis str8 guys lately. And I shouldn't have to worry about ANY of that when I'm reading what's supposed to be a "cute, low-angst" novella. This issue ISN’T low-angst. Not in 2023 when the GOP is trying to legislate away our human rights. Certainly not without a content warning.
I ADORE Riley Hart, but I'm struggling on this one. It's probably a "me" issue, but be warned. This isn’t a sweet story with a cute HEA. It's a challeI ADORE Riley Hart, but I'm struggling on this one. It's probably a "me" issue, but be warned. This isn’t a sweet story with a cute HEA. I'm sorry to say that the authors lost me at "WeChat". I've lived in China on and off since 2001, and NO WAY would anyone as paranoid as Silas use it. It's SO heavily monitored by the government, you can't say ANYTHING. Maybe if he was using Signal, or WhatsApp? But NEVER WeChat, my gawd.
After that, my suspension of disbelief was gone and I think I was lost from there. Plus I wasn't really resonating with the characters. It's Riley Hart, so it's still a 3 ⭐ read, but just be warned about the content!...more
