"i sadly this was a bit of a nothing burger for me. i listened to the audiobook so the writing style really stuck out to me but not in a way i liked. "i did this. i did that. i had this thought." i became painfully aware with the artistic style and it didn't work with the narrator. even with how first person this story is, i couldn't connect to rafa. this is a horror novel of vibes and nothing else .-. which usually works for me but something about this just didn't click. maybe because it's short there wasn't enough time to stick my teeth in or because it was ultra ambiguous, i'm just not sure....more

This is a story written for a younger audience, not myself. The messaging is heavy handed, the writing wasn't my cup of tea, and the trials/competition were lacking a little. I really struggled with the setting of this story having a mix of modern day with fantasy but also didn't feel like any particular time. I did enjoy the trials for what they were and the suspense they caused, but I really enjoyed the female characters, especially the friendship between Ava and Wendy. This is more of a cliché debut young adult fantasy but again I think younger readers who like dystopian stories will enjoy this, it doesn't have subtle themes but it still makes you think about society. The ending really lost me, I commonly felt my mind wander elsewhere and picking up distractions while listening to the audiobook. This could've been a shorter story and I would've enjoyed the pacing a bit more. Overall I would recommend this story, with the expectations going into it knowing this has nothing to do with a circus....more

The big battle happens (with more action please) and the big bad talk about character undevelopment. let me tell you how this ending should've gone...
The big battle happens (with more action please) and the big bad (who isn't that important anyway) dies.
Now, either our beloved Rhen dies as a sacrifice while fighting the big bad because of the guilt and overall trauma from the curse. Then out of a need/must Grey takes the throne along side Harper who slowly fall in love and have their HEA (sorry i ship grey and harper so much after ACSDAL) OR Rhen and Harper stay on the throne and Emberfall has their HEA while Grey rules alongside Lia Mara where they're dumb trope could happen off page and away from my mind. That way these two kingdoms can have peace and trade and HEA.
EITHER OF THESE WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD OPTION COMPARED TO WHAT WE GOT!...more
