If it wasn't for the author's note at the end explaining the why behind this book I would have been totally clueless. After reading it I can understand why she wrote the book the way she did but it definitely was not my favorite out of the author's books. ...more

aside from the descriptions of the female creature I didn't find anything else creepy. So, that was definitely a bit of a bummer. Part of me wonders if I would have enjoyed this more if it wasn't so short and there were more opportunities for some real creepy scenes but I also didn't really care for any of the characters or the writing since it seemed a bit overdone. I'm still glad I gave it a shot because let's be real - the cover is creepy as hell but unfortunately it just wasn't for me.

This had me hooked from the beginning and kept me invested all the way until the last page because I NEEDED to know how this was going to end. Part of me was worried at first because I felt it was blatantly obvious who the "bad guy" was but once it was all said and done I was so satisfied with the the direction the story went. I've always loved Sager's writing style in his other books and this book was no exception. The way the story went from "now" to a countdown of "five days before, four days, three days, etc." had me finishing this in no time because I simply couldn't get enough.
10/10 would recommend if you're looking for a read thats hard to put down!...more
Rating: 3.5 stars Moral of the story: Avoid doing acid in the woods when possible
This was a fun but very weird read and almost comical at some points. Rating: 3.5 stars Moral of the story: Avoid doing acid in the woods when possible
This was a fun but very weird read and almost comical at some points. The 80's vibes were immaculate and the graphics thrown into the story were super fun. I really appreciated the friendship between Abby and Gretchen in this story and it even left my heart super soft at the end. The writing was done pretty well in the sense that I stayed up way to late with this book a few too many times because I needed to find out what happened. But at the same time I feel like there was something missing from the story....mainly like the who, what, where, when and why as to how Gretchen came to be possessed. Like, yeah we get it she took acid and got lost in the woods but I would have liked to know how she ended up possessed by such a strong demon and all of that. There are also a few aspects to this story that are problematic and the author acknowledges it in the book but it's kind of like, "well, it was the way the times were" and then moves along, which definitely left me feeling a little uncomfortable at times.
Overall though, this is definitely a read that's high on the entertainment factor and has a few solid parts that make this creepy, gross, and unsettling. It's a story of friendship and the lengths Abby will go to save her friend from being possessed by the devil and what more could we ask for this spooky season? ...more

I was a little nervous because there are toooooons of mixed reviews out there for this one but I ended up really enjoying this. I love unreliable narrators and Charlie was probably the most unreliable one I've come across thus far. Suffering from episodes of hallucinations or as Charlie puts it "movies in her mind" and dealing with a heavy sense of guilt and grief over her best friends murder, Charlie is looking to leave college and never come back. So, she takes a ride from a complete stranger who is also making the trek from New Jersey to Ohio thinking he seems like a nice guy. It doesn't take very long for her to realize she's made a HUGE mistake and could possibly be sitting in the front seat with no where to go for hours on end with the notorious serial killer who murdered her best friend.

I was hoping for something a little bit more creepy and intense compared to what we really got.
For such a short book the pacing felt super off. There's so many characters and at the 50% mark there still isn't much going on. Of course, everything is crammed into the last half of the book and the ending is so abrupt that I double checked to make sure my book wasn't missing any pages. The only reason I feel that a 3 star rating is fair is because despite the wonky pacing and rapid shifting of POV's it was able to hold my attention from start to finish...I just didn't necessarily love what went down in between those points....more

The fact that I've only seen a few people talking about this on here is an actual crime. If you love books about serial killers you need to read this book.
"The corn itself could have been waving hello, or it could have been breathing.”
There’s still plenty of time to squeeze in a good ol’ slasher book"The corn itself could have been waving hello, or it could have been breathing.”
There’s still plenty of time to squeeze in a good ol’ slasher book for the month of October and this book absolutely delivered on that. The best part about Clown in a Cornfield is that it’s a relatively quick read coming in at just over 300 pages but it’s extremely fast paced – I seriously could not put this down. And now I find myself on the hunt for all the gory, murder-filled YA books that I can squeeze in for the rest of this month.
I don't want to say that a book filled with murder was a crazy, fun ride buuuuut.... it really was. If you love slasher movies you'll understand what I mean. I thought for a YA horror novel this would be a little on the tamer side but once the first murder happened and then the second, third, fourth, fifth, etc. I realized I was in for quite the story. The body count in this book left me shook, I don't think I've ever read a book that involved so many characters getting killed in such a short amount of time. The author also does a fantastic job of giving readers just enough of the characters backstories and creating the perfect ominous setting before wreaking havoc on the characters.
Now, if you're looking for a book with a crazy plot twist you would never see coming, let me just say, that this is not it. It's fairly obvious once the murders start happening who is behind all of the killings. However, I don't think that it really takes away much from the story. There's still a few good plot twists in here that will rock your world - some good and other's not so good but overall it's still just a fun read. If you're also looking for a book that has a lot of character growth definitely think again. This book pretty much just ranks extremely high on the entertainment scale while you're reading it, making it the perfect book to curl up with on a weekend night.
