I loved the beginning and seeing the boys' gentle sides at the beginning when they were trying to help her turn back was so cute and I love getting those "secretly a cinnamon roll but externally they're all big, bad, morally gray men", they're one of my favorite types of characters. I did start getting a little bored about midway-75% through? but other than that bit, I was hooked the rest of the time. ...more

I’d never wanted to be consumed with someone as much as I wanted to be consumed by her.
I absolutely loved everything about this book.
the MCs were bo I’d never wanted to be consumed with someone as much as I wanted to be consumed by her.
I absolutely loved everything about this book.
the MCs were both written and developed really well, and I know I saw a lot of myself in both characters, tbh. and I'd list them here, but I'd rather not expose myself like that in a book review. but I just know as an eldest daughter who has definitely pushed herself (both mentally and physically) past where she probably should in an attempt to prove herself, to be good enough, to not be a disappointment, this definitely hit a bit to close to home at times.
and one other thing I loved about both characters that I do want to point out, was the was that they communicated really well. I haven't read a contemporary romance in a minute, but I know the last several I had read had the stupid miscommunication trope, and neither character, even after the truth was out, would talk to the other. like just sit and have a conversation without one or the other getting defensive or just giving in bc they want to avoid confrontation or whatever. there were many times where Sage or Noah would say something, and realize that it came out wrong or that it was misunderstood, etc, AND THEY TALKED IT OUT. there might have been a little running/shutting down, but they came back and talked it out. and I know that felt a bit refreshing bc I don't see it very often in the other contemp. rom. that I read.
"All I know is that I want to be with you," I whispered. "Even with all this fear, I want to be with you." "Then that's enough," she promised. "Knowing that is more than enough."
and the romanceeee. I don't usually love slow burns but I *am* a sucker for rivals to lovers romances and this one was so worth the wait. the tension and build up was ...more
well. you all were right. this was not only incredible, but I sobbed. I hate that these two weren't given a happy ending, that they were doomed from thewell. you all were right. this was not only incredible, but I sobbed. I hate that these two weren't given a happy ending, that they were doomed from the start.
this was why I was hesitant to read this retelling. bc I knew how it ended and I have said a hundred times that if it doesn't have a happy ending, I don't want it. but this. this broke me. it was absolutely incredible, I couldn't look away. the way this author wrote Achilles + Patroclus' story had me hooked from the start. I loved how we got to see the two grow up together. to fall in love. how they grew as men. despite how their story ended, despite Achilles' actions towards the end, I am still in awe of their characters. of the strength in them both.
when achilles' son was first mentioned at the end I literally could not remember who this was, and my only thoughts were: the audacity of this CHILD, and how dare he. and then I got to the part with andromache and polyxena and I remembered. this kid is TWELVE and already a monster. and then what he did to Patroclus? I wanted to throw my book. but then I also read what he said to Briseis and I had the same feeling.
this book gave me all the emotions. happiness and rage and sad and several others in between. overall, it was amazing. 10 out of 10. loved 98% of it (the two percent reserved for the characters that i hated and the fact that they didn't get a happy ending) and I definitely recommend this.
--- also!! I actually listened to this, didn't physically read the book. and it was my first ever audiobook! it was also incredible, loved the narrator!...more
