My main problem however, is the woorld building. This novel is a traditional steampunk novel with a LOT of alternate history. The where so much information thrown at the readers at times, that I lost track of the plot and had to read some of the pages over aging to understand what was going on. This novel needs a bit of patience. But I am quite interested in reading the sequel..right now actually. ...more

We meet the (amazing) characters from the first book, like Sorcha, her brothers and Red, but they are secondary characters in "Son of shadows". The main focus in this story is on Sorchas children, the next generation. Unfortunately, I did not like ANY of the new characters. For the most part of the novel, they act without thinking. And Liadan, the main character, get away with everything she do, without consequences, because everyone think that she is incapable of making bad decisions. The most annoying part of this book is the romance between Liadan and Bran, which came out from nowhere. Liadan think that what is between her and Bran is "true love" after spending a couple of days with him, and he in return, spends those days making insulting remarks about her. Compared to "Daughter of the forest", where the romance is a sub-plot, the romance in "Son of Shadows" take over the whole plot. Yes, I am comparing the this sequel to "Daughter of the forest",especially since I absolutely loved the first book.
Many people will enjoy this sequel as much as the first one. I, however, found the story of Sorcha and her six brothers, which is based on the fairy tale of the six swans, much more poignant. Both books can bee read as stand alone novels, since both tell their own story. ...more
