And, three chapters of each is the perfect amount.
Hello, Transcriber-this book is the one that made me download the sample. Although I enjoy Mystery and Crime, I don’t like my stories too graphic so that was my concern with this one. So far, the things being transcribed were fine for me, although I do deplore hunting-especially reading that the neighbor raised a bird and then enjoyed killing it-perfect circle of life. NO. It isn’t to me. Other than that, the writing is beautifully descriptive. It seems like this mystery will be a slow burn.
These Silent Woods-People living off the grid usually doesn’t appeal to me, and again the book began with animals dying. Probably not a book for me, although I did enjoy a glimpse into the relationship between Coop and 8 year old Finch, who has never known the outside world.
The Missing Hours-CLAUDIA doesn’t remember what happened after 11 PM-but she has a split lip, a black eye, and concerns that a condom wasn’t used. Her sister EDIE has just given birth, and cannot believe that her sister Claudia would attend the birthing classes with her, and then miss the birth of the baby. And, TREVOR, comes to Claudia’s aid, initially-how will he fit in? All three POV’s were compelling and this is a book that I WILL request!
Enola Holmes-I don’t watch a lot of TV as an avid book reader, so I was unaware that this was a Netflix series. Or, that a much younger sister to Sherlock Holmes had been written! And, she is a sleuth as well! If you think you might enjoy mysteries and crimes solved by a young woman in London’s 1889-this one is for you! Sherlock and Watson make an appearance too!

When she was younger, heads would turn when she walked into a room.
Her husband adored her, and “IF NO ONE CAN SEE YOU, YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH MURDER”
When she was younger, heads would turn when she walked into a room.
Her husband adored her, and she had great relationships with her two children.
So, when did she become “invisible?”
Feeling like JUST a caretaker to her now unappreciative family, Rachel becomes obsessed with the rash of knife murders happening near her home.
She begins a scrapbook of sorts, with clippings of all of the Victims and Crimes. Perhaps, she can persuade the police do more about the crimes if she builds a convincing case.
Or, perhaps, she should take matters into her own hands?
Rachel narrates some chapters and the rest of the story unfolds though a series of transcripts, as Amanda “blue eyes” Frost, a forensic psychiatrist, interviews Rachel...to try to uncover if Rachel is guilty of the latest neighborhood crimes.
AND, the police interview her husband, Mark...her daughter, Katie, her best friend, Lisa, and new neighbor, Ingrid, as they try to determine what is really going on!
This a dialogue driven novel, similar to “Our Little Secret”, by Roz Nay, in format, BUT with a unique story of its own.
I felt it could have been improved with some editing, as the first 50% pared down a bit, would’ve provided a quicker pace...but once you hit that mark, the revelations and twists come much quicker!
My second book by S.E. Lynes and both were CLEVER and ENTERTAINING.
And, the ending was satisfying too!
Thank you to the Author, Bookouture, and NetGalley for the digital ARC provided in exchange for a candid review!
You won’t have to wait long for this one! Releasing on Apr. 22, 2020!

“Katherine Marshall” began Agent Robbins has he formally began the interview with the suspect they believe is responsible for the Arson-“you should be aware that providing false statements to a federal agent, is a Federal offense-including those made today…”
But, how did we get to the point where Kate is the suspect sitting before agents McGee and Robbins, still smelling of smoke from a fire that most of her family has perished in?
WELL-it all started when a summons from her father gathered Kate-her two sisters-Amber and Bea-and their families-to a weekend at the Lake House-presumably to meet his new “friend” Susan.
And, it all ended with a fire at that same Lake House, two years later.
But between those two events are many TWISTS and TURNS that I promise you WON’T see coming!
And, many of the CHILLING SECRETS that will be revealed will come from Kate’s son-a toddler named Jack-who struggles to explain what happened from when he “used to be bigger”…
Kate’s husband Neil, is a scientist who doesn’t believe that reincarnation is possible but Kate knows that the things Jack is saying didn’t come from her, and their opposite opinions make the family dynamics throughout this book ring true.
I have never read anything by Gregg Dunnett before, but I am thrilled to have discovered his work. It was the perfect start to 2024 SPOOKY SEASON, and it kept me engaged from the first page through the last.
I can’t wait to discover his backlist!

Katy Sweeney is looking for her younger sister Phoebe- a vivacious blogger who disappeared while traveling solo in her van. Her journey was supposed to take her on a complete loop of Australia, starting and ending in Perth.
Pheebsinwonderland Day 6- Besides the “necessities” all you need is common sense, Phoebe assures her followers-“Trust your gut and if something’s off-just leave!” She posts along with her TOP TWENTY SAFETY TIPs. #solofemaletravel, #womenwhowander
And, yet, just three weeks later, her BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS and CHEERFUL POSTS completely stop.
It’s been a year, and the case has gone cold, but Katy believes that people don’t just vanish into thin air-everyone leaves a trace-you just have to find it.
So, using Phoebe’s social media accounts as a map, Katy retraces her sister’s steps, searching for any clues the police may have missed.
Her first clue comes when she finds a Bobby pin, painted with nail polish-in the dirt at one of the campsites-which is a unique item that Phoebe always wore in her hair.
Teaming up with Katy is Beth (Lily) who also found trouble while living a van life and literally ran into Katy while on the run from an abusive boyfriend.
The story alternates between the POV’s of Katy, Beth and Wyatt-a sick, young boy whose Mom also disappeared after leaving their home one day.
I have mixed feelings about this book.
The author captured the dark side of Women’s Solo travel brilliantly, with descriptive prose and nothing is scarier to me than reading about or imagining the awful things that some humans are capable of.
The story started out strong but the pace became too SLOW by the midway point and 384 pages began to feel too long. Despite mostly enjoying it, the book took me longer than usual to finish.
And the book took a turn in the end which disappointed me. It was a unique story but there was a missed opportunity to really make this an EMOTIONAL crime novel, and I felt cheated by the ending. How you feel about it may determine your final rating too.
I paired my reading with the audiobook, narrated by Maddy Withington, who did a terrific job voicing all three characters.

On Saturday, July 16th, Ethan wakes up alone.
The flap remains shut, but there is a thirty eight inch gash along one side of the tent, and Billy is gone. Apparently, Ethan slept right through the whole thing.
No signs of a struggle and no clues.
It’s been thirty years and Billy is still listed on NamUs ( The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System ) as MISSING.
Ethan’s parents have retired to Florida, and at 40 years old, he finds himself unexpectedly moving back into the family home on Hemlock Circle-the last place he expected to be living at this stage of his life.
He struggles with Insomnia, something he developed after the abduction, so when the motion detectors of the neighboring houses are tripped, ONE BY ONE-he is awake to see them all!
But, he can’t see WHO or WHAT is setting them off.
The next morning, a baseball ⚾️ is in his yard-the secret code the two boys had which meant, “Billy wants to play”.
Could Billy be back? Or is this a GHOST story?
Alternating between the PAST and the PRESENT, the mystery of what happened to Billy will finally be solved.
I actually guessed MOST of the reveals this time-the CLUES are all there if you pay close attention-not all of the little details but definitely who had played a part in Billy’s disappearance.
This didn’t detract from my enjoyment because the author’s last two books were too twisty and OTT for my tastes, and this one was much more plausible which is my preference. I enjoyed reading to see if I was right…
The middle dragged just a bit, when we spent a lot of time in the past, so I will go with 3.75 ⭐️ rounded up!
I also love the cover depicting the ominous Cul de Sac, where those shocking things happened in the “middle of the night”…

There is NEVER a wrong time to read a book about books-or bookstores!
The oldest mystery specialty bookstore in the world, The Mysterious Bookshop, is There is NEVER a wrong time to read a book about books-or bookstores!
The oldest mystery specialty bookstore in the world, The Mysterious Bookshop, is an actual place, and Otto Penzler is an actual person.
And, for most of its forty-five-year history, he has commissioned an original short story as a holiday gift for its customers, written exclusively for the store and never published elsewhere. The stories were given out to customers as a holiday gift to thank them for their business, and were either handed out or mailed between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.
The prompt for these stories requires three things-that it be set at Christmastime, that it involve a crime of some kind, or the suspicion of one, and that it be set at least partially in the bookstore.
This is a collection of 12 of these short stories, compiled in one book!
Since the Mysterious Bookshop only sells Crime and Mystery books-these aren’t your typical Christmas stories-Hallmark writers need NOT apply. Here is a HINT of what to expect:
Black Christmas by Jason Starr-nothing cozy about this story about “soulmates”.
A Midnight Clear by Lyndsay Faye-In a seedy apartment close to the Mysterious Bookstore, a man mourns a woman.
Wolfe Trap by Loren Estleman-a locked room (locked drawer) mystery.
Secret Santa by Ace Atkins-a “has been” author keeps up the facade of annual book signings at the Mysterious Bookshop on Christmas Eve.
The Gift of the Wiseguy by Rob Hart- a stakeout at the Mysterious Bookshops for an author’s mob father.
Snowflake Time by Laura Lippman-an offensive author’s rant about everything including Goodreads reviews that deduct points for the killing of cats.
The Christmas Party-Jeffrey Deaver-a nurse at an assisted care senior center who really goes the extra mile for her patients.
Here we come A Wassailing by Thomas Perry- Takes “regifting” to a whole new level!
A Christmas Puzzle by Ragnar Johasson-a clerk at the Mysterious Bookshop agrees to help an 80 year old widow solve a puzzle after the shop closes on Christmas Eve.
Hester’s Gift-Tom Mead-an amateur sleuth named Hester Queeg helps Police solve an unusual double murder.
Sergeant Santa by David Gordon-a pickpocket must find a way to return an item!
End Game by Martin Edwards-a ghost story for Christmas that involves “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”.
Who knew a bookstore could be so dangerous?
My favorites were “The Gift of the Wiseguy”, a “Christmas Puzzle” and “Sergeant Santa” (all 4 star) and my only two star story was “Snowflake Time” with most of the others earning 3.5 stars, so I will round up.
AVAILABLE October 22, 2024 if you like to start shopping early for Christmas Stocking Stuffers!

Carrie has been diagnosed with terminal Cancer.
They meet in a support group, and Alex feels almost maternal towards Carrie. She makes it her mission to make the rest of Carrie's life, all that it can be.
But, Alex is a self proclaimed liar. Does she have an ulterior motive or is she the "perfect friend"?
I have to admit that I was NOT fully invested in this story till about the 50% point.
Having read a LOT of thrillers this year, I am finding it challenging to decide on a fair rating for this book...
The first twist was also the twist in an earlier read this year.
The second twist was in a different book, also recently read.
I won't mention those books, here...so that other readers can be surprised when I was not.
If you have not read those same books, I believe that YOU will enjoy this book more than me, because YOU will have more jaw dropping moments than I did.
At the 50% point, the pace picked up and I began to enjoy the story more.
I did want to find out if either of these women could be considered a "perfect friend" and if the ending could surprise me. (some of it did!!)
For that reason, I am going to go with a 3.5 star rating (rounded up) as I think that readers who don't guess the first two reveals WILL find this book satisfying.

I MIGHT kill to live at the Villa Lucia in Tuscany!
The infinity pool, the surrounding Olive Orchards, and the vineyards of plump black Sangiovese grapes-it sounded like heaven on earth.
But, Cerys is just trying to keep her bed and breakfast/yoga retreat afloat and stay ahead of any potential bad reviews that can ruin her livelihood. And, to stay ahead of her dependence on alcohol which she is turning to earlier and earlier in the day, to get her through the stress-while hiding her drinking from her teenaged daughter, Lowri.
Today, Harry, the Director of A &R at Kismet Records will be arriving with his wife, Zoe and their teenaged son, Charlie, and he isn’t known for his patience. But, that will be the least of her concerns.
The book opens with a body floating face down in the infinity pool-
Breathe in for five seconds, hold for seven, and breathe out for eight-Cerys reminds herself…
The story is then told from multiple, alternating POV’s as Detective Saachi pieces together WHAT happened at the Villa and WHO is responsible for the MURDER.
I suspected just about EVERYONE at point or another which always makes reading a book like this fun-and the story is PLAUSIBLE as well as SURPRISING and SUSPENSEFUL-which is another PLUS for me.
No wonder this UK author who burst onto the scene in 2020, has become an Amazon bestselling author with over 2 million books sold. His DI Ruth Hunter Snowdonia series (19 as of today) is currently in development as a TV series to be filmed in North Wales where the author currently lives. He also has another successful five book crime series set on Anglesey.
This is a STANDALONE and, I am really excited to have discovered Simon McCleave’s work! I paired the Audible with a written copy and enjoyed both.
Although the book contains references to Sexual Assault, Domestic Abuse, and Alcoholism, nothing is graphic in description.

Lara, is a former photo journalist who gave up her career to become a wedding photographer, after she suffered a personal tragedy which made her realize that stories like those she featured, added to the pain that the families of Victims were already suffering.
Ten years ago, her sister Isabelle, and her two twin nephews were killed, in what could only be assumed as a Murder-Suicide by Isabelle’s husband, Jason.
His body was never recovered.
His five year old daughter, Lily was left for dead by the murderer, but when the ambulance arrived, she was found to have a weak pulse. She is being raised by her grandmother and her Aunt Lara.
Lara would love to add “landscape photography” to her portfolio, and one day while going through photos she took on the beach, she spots a man in the background of one picture, which could only be her “brother in law”.
Lily, now fifteen, aspires to be an “influencer” so, without discussing it with her family, she posts a TIC TOC video, talking about the crime she lived through as a child and the new memories that have started to surface.
The timing could NOT be worse.
As disturbing things begin to happen, Lara begins to worry if Jason has returned to finish the job.
She teams up with both the DC from the case, Curtis Frampton and a former rival journalist, Johnny Nelson, in an attempt protect Lily, and locate her missing father.
This was a FAST PACED story which hooks you from the OPENING SCENE, told primarily from the first person POV of Lara, who is a smart, sympathetic protagonist.
AJ McDine’s prose is DELICIOUSLY descriptive, and it brings to life the characters, and their conversations as they go about their lives. I could easily envision what was happening as I listened to this story!
I enjoyed the narrator’s voice for the women, but all of the men sounded alike, so I really had to concentrate on who was with Lara when one of them was speaking with her.
ENTERTAINED from start to finish, and completely SURPRISED by the final twist- this is the kind of book which reminds me of why I love Goodreads so much.
This is the author’s seventh novel but US audiences were not familiar with this UK author until Bookouture brought her work to the US in April with her sixth novel, “The Baby”. It reached Amazon’s top 20 in the UK and the top 100 in the US. It’s great that readers around the World can share their favorite authors and books on one Global site.
Three positive reviews on the same day from GR friends, put THIS book and author on MY radar, and I decided that I just HAD TO READ IT NEXT!
Since this was an AUDIOBOOK listen, please excuse any errors with the spelling of character names as I wasn’t able to see the names in print.
McDine was a journalist and police press officer until she started writing Fiction. She lives in Kent in the UK with her husband, fellow thriller writer A J Wills, their two sons and three rescue cats.

UPDATE: The Audible narrated by Delanie Nicole Gill is FANTASTIC
I don’t often read HORROR, and I didn’t even read BIRD BOX, but every once in a while, a book from this genre appeals to me-and this was one of them.
It was told ENTIRELY from the UNIQUE first person perspective of eight-year-old Bela, a girl who is being targeted by a ENTITY who calls itself her “OTHER MOMMY”.
YOU CAN RUN-BUT YOU CANNOT HIDE
“Other Mommy” is looking for carnation (reincarnation) as she wants to LIVE again…
“CAN I GO INSIDE YOUR HEART?”
She pretends to be friends with the vulnerable Bela, as she tries to manipulate her way in.
AND SHE IS GROWING IMPATIENT
I felt the DESPERATION of Daddo, Mommy and Grandma Ruth, as they try to save Bela.
And, I felt TERRIFIED for Bela.
Like the movie, “A Quiet Place” by John Krasinski and Michael Sarnoski (which I loved) the EVIL is lurking just out of view, but you can always FEEL its presence.
This story is accurately described as “a chilling horror novel about a haunting” and I think it would also translate well to the BIG SCREEN.
I finished this last night and I woke up, STILL THINKING about the ending!!

Otis Parsons, a violent pedophile, has been released from prison, and Dick’s sister Dee is the one who helped put him behind bars. He has written Dee a letter, telling her how much he is looking forward to meeting her 11 year old son, Jesse, and now he has moved back into his family home-just two doors down.
Her brother, Dick Raynes, is a scientist who has developed a formula which is able to predict which pedophiles have the traits in common which make them most likely strike again, and the numbers are staggering.
It could be as high as 86%.
He isn’t about to let Jesse become another statistic so he does what the law is unable to do, and protects his family.
FBI agent Steve Patterson investigates crimes against sex offenders, running a department that he personally created after his own son was killed by a vigilante mother who targeted the wrong person.
Because of this, he believes that our laws are founded on the principle of “presumed innocence” allowing forgiveness for past mistakes even though these same laws also leave us vulnerable. Civilians and Cops cannot be permitted to take justice into their own hands, because if there are no checks and balances, we would become a mutinous, violent society ruled by prejudice, assumption and fear.
When he follows up on the reported death of Otis Parsons, he meets Dee-and it’s practically “love at first sight”. So, his sense of right and wrong will be challenged when his suspicions lead him straight to her brother.
It’s a conundrum-and there is no good answer, especially when he learns that for some reason, Dick didn’t just stop with Otis.
TWO GOOD MEN-with differing beliefs and one woman in common.
This is a unique, thought provoking story that I really enjoyed from beginning to end, and it’s one which may have you pondering how you would feel if you were Steve, and alternately, if you were Dick.
It was interesting to learn from the authors note at the end of the book, that this was actually the second novel she wrote, but never published and it’s original name was “Average Dick” which she now admits was a terrible name. ☺️
I am definitely recommending this one, and you can pick up a copy on October 8, 2024!
A buddy read with DeAnn-be sure to watch for her review to see if she is recommending this as well!
