When I first discovered Alice Hoffman years ago I found her writing so lyrical and her stories wrapped around you. Now I am only halfway through this long awaited prequel and I am bored and uninterested. There is nothing keeping me vested in the story or the characters for that matter. Very disappointing....more

I enjoyed this book but still had a but if confusion or lingering questions at the end.
how did Hollis' wife and child died? Did I miss that? I know Alan's wife died in a fire, the elder Coopers' (Gwen's grandparents) in a car accident, but Belinda and little Cooper?
Why did people think Hollis guilty? Susie Justice was determined to look into Hollis but she never didn't uncover anything about why people though Hollis killed Belinda. Yes he was and ass hole an manipulated and probably beat her bu I was expecting more info.
Why did March's dad bring Hollis home with him in the first place? I kept waiting for that info to unfold.
Isn't March regretful or something? I kept waiting for the story to unfold in a way that make the read feel sorry for Hollis or March. But it didn't. I did not like March at all. I thought she was being a shitty, selfish parent. I wanted some realization moment from her.
Overall its Alice Hoffman and I wanted to keep reading. ...more

These places are never named and the disaster is rather vague but it gives some reminder to September 11. The girl looses her family in the disaster. The story is about how she survives emotionally and physically after this disaster to the city and her family. It is a girls journey through grief....more

This book is very sad and I just cannot handle reading it right now. Also I am not connecting with any of the characters. Usually there is one that you tend to feel for or relate to but I don't and it feels like you're not supposed to be overly sympathetic for anyone.
Hoffman is one of my favorite authors so perhaps I will try it again some other time.
----- I'm giving up. Its very disappointing for Alice Hoffman. Her writing is normally so smooth and flowing. Not with this book....more
