That said, the concept of the new palteia didn't really make sense? Sexually submissive trying to force himself to be socially submissive and celibate, sent by the military, temporary??? Just didn't line up at all with what we knew of palteias up to this point. My biggest issue with this book was the pacing. I felt like the stuff in the last few chapters should have taken up a bigger portion of the book.
Given all that, I was very happy with the conclusion of this book, especially the last chapter and epilogue. I wish the author had short stories about these two afterwards. ...more

SO GOOD! The cover makes it seem like this book is erotica but it really isn't.

I LOVED: - characters & their development - the culture of the Rownt - the military set up/attitude towards aliens - the slow burn romance! (very little sex) - the focus on trade, as opposed to travel/fighting/science that you'd usually see in scifi - the focus on language; so many of the alien encounter books I've read recently have magic or tech that just gives the one or both species each other's languages, really unsatisfying

The writing was so good, this could have easily been a 6 book series about the army rising up to kick the invaders off the planet and Carter getting on the Omega council and humans discovering the planet and them integrating into the interplanetary community.
I found it annoying how much conflict there was in this book. One chapter, a character is fighting with his lover, the next chapter there's squabbles among the chain of command. I was disappointed we didn't make it out of the muds to the new city.
The new omega added awesome depth to a lot of what was going on. The twist in the last couple of chapters was awesome! That's how I like my omega books, like its a spice enhancing the story, not the only aspect of the story that matters. I really wish there was another book....more

1) It's so dark, it's kinda making me depressed. 2) It's so addictive, I keep calling in sick to work LOL 3) I'm kinda desensitized to the gore/violence/horror which is making it less thrilling.
So I'm gonna come back to it in a few weeks. ...more
