Yūki Tabata (Japanese: 田畠裕基, Hepburn: Tabata Yūki) is a Japanese manga artist.
After working as an assistant to Toshiaki Iwashiro, he created the one-shot Hungry Joker, which was later serialized as a full series. After its conclusion, he launched Black Clover.
Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.
The Premise
Asta continues to surprise me in Black Clover vol 17! His choices always come from the heart of who he is and refuse to conform to his society. We're in the midst of the battle of Mereoleona Vermillion's life. And you know it Asta doesn't do what's expected of him, even surprising the rebellious Xerx! The Midnight Sun was nothing compared to these new enemies wearing faces that only the hardest of souls wouldn't hesitate to slaughter, enemy or not. Nozel takes command and surprises us too with his unexpected attitude toward Asta and Yuno but also his sister! But it's Yuno who's the star of this volume... since he was part of the reincarnation spell!! (Oh no!!! Not Asta's BFF!!?)
The Buzz
The battles in Black Clover vol 17 are epic! Especially since the goal of each one is NOT to kill their opponent. I love how Yuki Tabata keeps turning the story on its head. The purpose of the Midnight Sun's plan was really an incredible twist with some major repercussions that make Black Clover vol 17 and this entire arc really compelling. We get to see Licht battle it out and his opponents are not who you expect! And their is a connection between the mastermind of this plan and Yuno that adds an extra buzz I wasn't expecting. I see the bits of foreshadowing but haven't guessed yet where we're going... but I know its going to be well worth the read!
The Feels
Yuno and Asta together always makes me melt. They are best friends that are also rivals but it doesn't cause them to go dirty. We get to see them in action... back in their hometown!! I was totally floored what happened at first (nooooooo, not the sister!! not the kids!!) and how Asta overcame that difficulty (of course, its super neat and unexpected!!). When orphans have a familial bond I just can't help rooting for them. I know for Asians especially orphans are the bottom of the heap and so the way Yuno and Asta are together... yeah, it's hard to resist!!
The Visuals
Black Clover vol 17 has some great art, of course, but I was surprised how the battle art with Licht was different from normal and made the battle more powerfully felt. The spreads were just really well done and showcased Yuno and Asta so well. Hahahha I love how at times Yuno's art makes him seem like some kind of heartthrob in the middle of a shoujo manga instead of a shonen manga. I also loved seeing the other kids who knew Yuno and Asta from the orphanage. That was super scary! And Luck and Magna battle it out with some really great, unexpected twists and the best expressions. The art of Black Clover vol 17 makes the story!
Black Clover vol 17 a stellar Act 2 to the plans of the Midnight Sun. It's shocking, awe-inspiring and epic! Asta and Yuno really had to step up and do the unexpected. And they made it fun and epic along the way. This has truly become a war to save the Magic Knights of the Clover Kingdom... until next time in Black Clover vol 18!!

This series has great moments when the main character is away. Asta is not doing it for me. He has swords and that is cool. But he is loud, obnoxious and irritating. But the other characters are great. Like in One Piece and even in Demon Slayer I am looking forward to the main character do to something - but in here it's the other people I want to see shine.
So other fights and character spotlights are great. Superb action and clever character moments. But when it comes to Asta it is just one beam of energy and asecond beam of energy, which is boring and just meh.
Other than that this sees the evolution of bad guys, who possessed the bodies of good guys. And of course, Asta is the only one who has the power to "turn them back". It makes it predictable, but I kinda expected it.
what I did not mention is the dynamic between Asta and Yuno. Black Clover is being compared to Naruto a lot and it has similarities. But what I really enjoy is the rivalry between those two. They want the same things but they support each other, care for each other and are simply friends. It's a nice change from every other "rival" who needs to destroy the other one and they can't be friends...

This one gets five stars purely for Asta's and Yuno's team ups throughout the volume, Zora coming in clutch for Asta, and Mereoleona being an ABSOLUTE FUCKING BADASS!
That being said, the biggest issue I'm having right now is that the elves are SO FUCKING BORING AND HYPOCRITICAL. Seriously, at one point one says, "our bond as elves is far greater than any human's" and I'm just sitting here, feeling like I'm watching a fantasy anime episode of Punk'd. Like, the bonds people, specifically humans, have with each other is LITERALLY THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS FUCKING MANGA. So when these spout this bullshit, it makes me angry and kind of cringe because obviously they're going to be proven wrong. Also, the elves' personalities are boring as shit. I feel like the greatest villainous act the elves have committed so far is stripping fun characters of their personalities.
I am glad Asta got a (convenient) power up to save the village and the one dude being controlled. Also, Magna's and Vanessa's fight with Luck was insane and I'm super curious to see where it goes.
Aside from those, I don't have much else to say about this volume. It was better than the last two, but only by a slight margin.

I love how quickly you can finish these mangas, but still manage to have an amazing adventure, twists and turns, battles and everything in between. In this manga, the Elves and their threat to take over the human race is in full swing. Asta, Yuno, the Black Bulls and the Magic Knights are all extraordinary fighters. Can’t wait to keep reading! Especially now there is no more exams, and more time for reading! Overall, yet another 5 star easy read for the Black Clover series.
This volume is honestly amazing and I think at this point it’s doing things which are unique (idk why people are still going on with Naruto similarities). The plot feels big enough that this might be the endgame.
The elves have risen and declared war on the humans! Old friends are now enemies and the Magic Knights are scrambling to keep up as chaos descends on the realm.
This volume is full of awesome magical explosions and fights but there's an element that both brings me relief and annoyance. Yuno is still in control! Not the elf! I get it; Yuno is super strong and amazing but it feels like a giant wall of plot armor. Please, make us actually worry about our main characters for more than a couple of chapters. But hey, Asta got an awesome new sword and the two page spread on 90 and 91 is amazing!
Mereoleona made this volume at least 3 times better otherwise it is pretty mediocre in my opinion. Yes, it is full of battles between different people and yes, the reincarnation of elves made the whole magic system much better but I found myself not enjoying the fights at all (well except for Mereoleona obviously). I'm curious what's going to happen with the whole reincarnation thing now. There will be a lot of power-ups for all of the characters as well. It was good to some degree but not extraordinary.
Anyway, apparently the wiki counts this "Elf Reincarnation Arc" as something separate from the EotMS Base Invasion we just had. I'd disagree, politely; the tournament was its own arc, then the raid, and this thing with the Elves is the same arc as the raid, since the raid worked in such a way that we basically always knew Licht was behind it.
Tabata continues doing his thang. Yuno isn't really too possessed by his invasive Elf soul because... um, he just isn't. Maybe Bell's blessing has something to do with it, but... probably not. Licht does something with a new sword (oh, it's stated Asta's Grimoire and swords belonged to Licht; I don't remember if we already knew that), and Asta is able to use it later, which allows him to negate magic effects (which is apparently different from his second sword? What did that do, just reflect? I think I've been speed-reading...). Neither boy has been able to transform further yet, so time will tell if such a thing might happen.
By the way, I don't remember if I said this before, but I feel like Asta and Yuno gained transformations much earlier than heroes in a lot of other Jump manga. I guess Urameshi Yusuke is the runner-up? Or should we count Naruto's initial Kyūbi Chakra thing against Haku as a "transformation"? I guess it's not too different from Black Asta, but I feel Black Asta better resembles Naruto's post-timeskip forms.
Mereoleona is more badass than contemporaries like All Might. Just sayin'.

Black Clover has made the brave decision to merge the "Sasuke Retrieval Arc" trope with the always-disappointing "War Arc" trope. This volume is full of characters saying they "somehow" got away, that they got a power-up from "somewhere", that something is happening. It's vague because nothing actually matters. Oh, all these characters are suddenly evil now? And trying to genocide humanity in a race war? I guess it's time to do a bunch of random battles now. Fight after fight after fight, while cowardly not letting people die. This person sacrifices themselves? Nah they fine. Powerful elf mage genocides a town? Nah they fine. Nothing matters. Just throw characters at each other over and over and eventually the arc will end, right?
I don't know if this holds true for the collected edition but I read this through the Shonen Jump app and revealing Asta's and Yuno's big SSJ-esque transformation powers is incredibly underwhelming when compared to the rest of the chapter... that's full of unfinished, uninked panels. It's the big turning point of the manga's plot, but it's also hastily drawn so you can't even say the art is making up for the abysmal plotting.
Ich habe die erste Staffel Black Clover gesehen und bin dann im März bei Band neun des Manga eingestiegen. Dieser Band hat Mereoleona sowie Asta und Zora's Teamarbeit, dass war ganz schön. Ich bin neugierig, in welche Richtung die Geschichte geht. Aber um ehrlich zu sein ist es kein herausstechender Action Manga und es wird wahrscheinlich nicht meine Lieblingsserie werden. Ich habe jedoch beim Lesen eine gute Zeit und das ist alles, was ich von einem guten Manga brauche.

I watched the first season of Black Clover and then switched over to volume nine of the manga in march. This volume has Mereoleona as well as Asta and Zora teamwork, so that was nice. I'm curious where the story is going. But to be honest it's not an outstanding action manga and it's probably not going to become a favourite series. I have a good time reading it though and that's all I need from a good manga.
Debo decir que este tomo me dio mucho que pensar. No porque el tomo tuviera revelaciones increibles o giros que no me haya visto venir. Sino que me da sensación de ser el ultimo arco de una historia, cosa que se que no es porque, al momento de escribir esto, hay demasiados volumenes mas como para que siga esto. Estamos teniendo batallas muy buenas y el peligro está al máximo. Está explotando todo. Me da miedo para lo que tenga que seguir, una vez terminado el arco. Igualmemte este tomo estuvo muy bueno. La batalla contra el ojo maligno de la noche blanca sigue y está tremenda. Ver a Asta y a Yuno volver, aunque sea por un ratito, a su pueblo natal y defenderlo fue muy satisfactorio. Ves el crecimiento de ambos, sobretodo de Asta, cosa que me gustó mucho. Y la batalla con la que nos deja este tomo, pinta muy buena. Ya necesito el próximo tomo.

Point positif :
- la on a vu que mereoleona voulait tous ce les tapé c'était incroyable mais bon elle a pas tenu après l'attaque d'asta et Zora incroyable pour s'en fuir.
- en plus on a vu que yuno aussi c'était devenu un elfe c'est ce qu'on nous a fait croire mais enfaite la réincarnation de l'elfe n'a pas fonctionné ducoup c'était le yuno qu'on connaît avec la puissance des elfe.
-après on a eu un petit combat de light vs asta et yuno incroyable.
- et on a vu que asta et yuno sont revenu à hadget pour protéger leur famille.
This was more like a 3.5 to me. This one was still just as good as the previous volume but it didn’t hit the same , so i had to lower the rato no a bit. I love love loved seeing so much Yuno in this one. He is such a cool character that isn’t explored that much and the way he was shown in this one really scratched that itch. I also love that some of those puzzle pieces about Asta are starting to come together.
Alright so that Sisgoleon fight was sick. I wonder if she’ll wake up before the end of the “war”. Also, of course Yuno wasn’t affected by the elf magic. Stupid of me to think that our main character’s bff would go through plot development. And Asta also got a sword that’s supposed going to save the world again. Not predictable at all (ngl it’s pretty sick and I love it don’t come for me). Can’t wait to see how they save Luck and the reconciliation he has with Magna.
The possession could have gone in a typical way, and I feel like it went the opposite. Yuno is still Yuno. I don't know if he's going to struggle in future, but I love that it wasn't even a question of him losing control. The team up is so wholesome and make my heart fill with joy. Saving Hage village together and seeing the kids again. Sister Lily... Father... The Black Bulls defending their home!

The Elves' reincarnation continues to wreck havoc across the Clover Kingdom, and even Asta's Anti-Magic doesn't seem to be able to snap his friends out of their possession.
The stakes just keep getting higher. Mereoleona's battle with the Elves was great - I did have to google what exactly was going on with Licht/Paltry/William though, it's not massively clear from the art.
The Eye of the Midnight Sun plans to attack the capital and the remaining magic knights must defend it them. Asta and Yuno save Sister and the orphans while on the way to help the other magic knights put up a fight against the elves.
