When Karen Imhoff finds a beaten man lying unconscious by the road in her Amish community, she doesn't hesitate to help. "John Doe" needs a place to stay while he regains his memory, and she has a room to rent. The handsome Englisher proves invaluable around the family farm, yet his presence wreaks havoc with her emotions. Karen has her younger siblings to care for. She can't fall for an outsider who doesn't know his own identity. But as Christmas draws closer, the simple grace of this life—and this woman—could inspire John to make Karen's dreams come true….
I was born and raised in Northcentral Kansas. I'm a farmer's daughter, but I now make my home in the city of Wichita. I'm an RN. Neonatal nursing has been the main focus of my career. What can I say? I love babies. I was invited to the highschool graduation of a baby I took care of. Talk about making me feel old!
In June of 2011 I became a widow after my husband of 36 years and 11 months died from multiple brain tumors. It was a very sad time, but thanks to the three f's, my faith, my family and my friends, life is moving forward. I have four brothers, one daughter and two grandchildren who all work at making me feel loved.
I'm the author of more than 30 books and I'm currently writing a series called The Brides of Amish Country for Love Inspired.
Karen has her younger siblings to care for since her mother had died 4 yrs previously. John finds himself liking the Imhoff home and the people esp Karen. He tries to find out if anyone knows him and is devastated when he realizes he may never regain his memory. He is falling in love with an amish woman and the faith that she holds so dear. There are times when he thinks he could join and become "Plain". When Jacob, karens brother, finally accepts John and likes him enough to give him a watch that he had found at the site of John's accident and kept hidden all this time. The watch was engraved and now he believes his name is Arron, but after going to a horse show with Karens family he soon has his memory back and realizes he is Johnathon, remembers his family and his business and why he came to this amish community, to see a young woman who is sister to his best friends wife. He has sad news to tell her. Will John now leave and go back to the life he knew or come back to the love of this woman and to the faith that he has grown to want? Patricia Davids has written a beautiful amish story and I am hoping there is another book coming to tell the story of John and Karen.
When Karen discovered a man left for dead on the edge of her family's Amish farm, she knew she needed to help him. When he was released from the hospital a week later he had amnesia and could not remember anything about himself. John Doe, as he was named, stayed with the Imhoff family while he looked for work and tried to remember his old life. Along the way, he falls in love with Karen. She is a strong, devout Amish woman who was responsible for caring for her 3 younger siblings since her mother and 2 older siblings dies in an accident a few years ago.
John begins to see some flashes of his past but cannot see all the details nor can he remember much more. He later realizes who he is and why he was in Hope Springs. Will he stay and build a new life, the Amish way, or will he return to his old life? God has a plan for John but does it include Karen?
This is the first book that I have read from Patricia Davids. I truly enjoyed it! After doing some searching, I realized that this book is the third in a series called, Brides of Amish Country. The first book is Katie's Redemption followed by The Doctor's Blessing. Both books are from the Stepple Hill Love Inspired and are reasonably priced for the kindle at under $4 each. I am personally going to read the first two books after I have read a few more Christmas books by the end of the year.
An Amish Christmas is a very inspiring story written by Patricia David's. This story shows the reader how the kindness of a stranger can change a person's life. When Karen Imhoff finds a stranger beaten and left to die along a road in her Amish community she doesn't hesitate to help the man. Since he has lost all of his identity John Doe remains at Karen's house and proves to be a great asset to her and her family. While John Doe's memory may not return he is discovering an attraction to this kind Amish woman. I absolutely loved this story and it's characters. The storyline will definitely keep the readers interest.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own and honest. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others. This story is filled with compassion and faith.
As always, a great Amish romance with a dash of mystery and a double portion of faith! I love the juxtaposition of Karen being so sure of her identity as an Amish woman, and “John Doe’s” amnesia preventing him from knowing anything about himself at all. So many little details in this book come together beautifully like a mosaic, making a complete picture with a sound lesson. I loved this story and raced through it in one day.
Loved this story of "John Doe" and Karen and her family. Something I think we would all dread, losing our memories. John Doe is found laying in a ditch just past the Imhoff family farm, Karen and her family take him in to help him find someone who knows him. Great story, well thought out. Love how it ends as well. Thank you Patricia Davids for another great read!
An Amish Christmas had a different spin with Karen Imhoff and her siblings discovering a man lying in a ditch. When he came to stay on the Imhoff’s farm he was peppered with questions by the younger children. Karen had her hands full caring for her dad and siblings without “John Doe” but she felt it was their Christian obligation with no place open for him in Hope Springs or Millersburg. The twists of turns gave way to moments of pleasant and sadness as he discovered his reason for coming to Hope Springs. Will Karen stay true to her Amish heritage as her heart falls for “John Doe”? This was another beautiful story by Patricia Davids.
I borrowed this book from our library even though it’s one of Davids’ older Love Inspired books. I was under no obligation to write a review but have shared my own opinion.
Title: AN AMISH CHRISTMAS Author: Patricia Davids Publisher: Love Inspired December 2010 ISBN: 978-0-373-87637-2 Genre: Inspirational/Amish
Karen Imhoff and her siblings have found a man beaten half-dead by the side of the road in her Amish community. She is quick to help, and even offers the man lodging in their dawdihaus once he is released from the hospital. The thing is, he doesn’t know who he is.
Quickly nicknamed John Doe until he remembers who he is, John tries to question the Amish community to see if anyone knows who he is. No one shows any signs of recognition but John does discover that he knows something about horses. How, he doesn’t know.
As John and Karen fall in love, John begins to dread remembering his past. What if he’s married? When he does regain his memory, will that kill their romance, or will he somehow be able to return?
AN AMISH CHRISTMAS is the third book in the Brides of Amish Country series by Ms. Davis. I have read the others in this collection and think this book was the best of the trio, though it did drag a little. It was real interesting to read the vocabulary lessons as Karen and her sister Anna attempted to teach John to speak their tongue.
If you are looking for a sweet Amish romance, then AN AMISH CHRISTMAS is a book that you should consider. It is a quick read, but will help to put you in the Christmas spirit. Discussion questions are included at the end. $5.50. 217 pages.
A good fast read for Christmas. Karen Imhoff is taking care of her younger siblings while her father recuperates from a broken arm. She is trying to figure out how to make ends meet when there is no cash coming in. "John Doe" is an Englischer who has been mugged and is suffering from amnesia. While he tries to figure out who he is and why he was visiting the Amish countryside he needs a place to stay. Karen offers her grandparents old house to John as a means to bring in some much needed money and to help him while he recuperates from his injuries. Need I say that love is in the air? But what can Karen do, John is an outsider and she does not want to be an outcast. I am fascinated by the Amish and there simple life and enjoy reading about it. There is a great to learn about these peaceful people and the respect they have for each other and the world around them.
Very interesting concept. We find out happens when an Amish family find a man beaten unconscious by the side of the road in their community. What's interesting is that he doesn't remember who he is or why he was there. Where he finds to stay, what happens and how he finds himself is all rolled up in this tale. It's always fascinating to read how the Amish live. What they believe and how they celebrate Christmas rounds out this good story.
When Karen Imhoff finds a beaten man lying unconscious by the road in her Amish community, she doesn't hesitate to help. "John Doe" I enjoyed this book tremendously . The beginning to the end. If i pick one word out of book. Wink : is my favorite word lol. I had smiles, I had tears, I had worrying. Now on my second book:The Christmas Quilt. 5 stars on the first book.
: AN AMISH CHRISTMAS “Sacrifices for a First Love”
This gentle romance flows along smoothly, with many challenges for the protagonists; the drama builds as an “Englischer” man seeks to court a devout Amish young woman. But the religious divide is not the only obstacle to their happiness.
Twenty-five year old Karen and her younger siblings--to whom she has acted as a mother for five years--discover the body of a man lying beside a wintry farm road. Although he is roused back to life, his memory is gone. He knows neither his name, his occupation, his marital status or why he was in the this Amish community. No one in the area apparently recognizes him, nor does anyone on the Internet seem to miss him either. Feeling pain both in his head (migraines) and his heart, he wonders why he is if he is doomed to be alone and abandoned. What can he do with his shattered life and stolen memories?
Easily readable this tale of forbidden love includes information regarding Amish customs, as well as many Amish words—most of which are translated or explained. He and Karen are convinced that God brought him to the Imhoff farm for purpose, but neither can fathom what that might be.
Interspersed with religious morality and piety this little gem offers homespun wisdom of coping with the challenges and temptations of daily life—both for the Amish and for the English. Still, it is the nature of the human heart to seek completion somewhere. Could the price of finding his lost past prove too high?
Another Amish amnesia book. I swear, they have a hat with topics in it, and another with authors and tell draw from them both and say, "Davids, you're writing amnesia, this month. Clopton, you're on unexpected twins. Gaymer Martin, you've got the failing bakery. Tronstad, you get the rancher inheriting half a farm. Minton, surprise firefighter's baby. Navarro, it's triplets!"
This was nothing particularly special. Guy found on the side of the road, beaten. He's got amnesia, and the Amish find him. He stays with them, trying to unravel who he is... falls in love... wants to stay. Gets his memories back, goes off to tie up loose ends, joins the Amish. The end.
MOST of the good stuff is completely ignored. The people who attacked him are absent (both physically and in *ANY* clues) the entire book. The 'memories' he's given are vague and uninteresting to the reader - "I remembered a white cat in a windowsill!" ????!!???? The accident in which Karen's mother/siblings were killed that affected her sister so badly... yet it barely comes up for any of them. The hidden relationship her dad has going... not even the least bit of intrigue given to it. It's just 'meh', across the board.
The one thing I really did like is that Karen is THE MOST 'Amish' woman I've seen anyone write, yet. She's closed lipped, short with everyone, shows no emotion (even though she's feeling it), keeps her thoughts to herself, and is grudgingly helpful. Everyone else is like, "Yo, John! Glad you're here!" And that's NOT how the Amish are, regardless of how they're mostly written.
Anyhow, it was okay. A time-spender, not a time waster... but not a time-well-spent-er, either.
Karen Imhoff discovers an unconscious man on the drive to their Amish farm. He has been mugged and abandoned to die in the cold. He returns to their home from the hospital. Having lost his memory, he is going by "John Doe" and trying to find out why he was in Hope Springs. He ends up standing in the grandparents cabin on the farm, and discovers he has skills with horses. Karen's father is a farrier, but unable to train his horses while he recovers from an injury. John helps train the horses.
Karen and John are attracted to each other, but he is an Englischer and may have a wife. John being unsuccessful to find anyone who knows him or a listing in missing persons, begins to think he will have to form a new life, if his memory doesn't return. He knows he loves Karen and will have to become Amish for her. So, John starts learning the language and customs. He also reads the Bible and attends church with them.
A touching story with faith is tested as John's truth comes out.
Karen is taking her brothers and sister to school one morning when Anna says she sees a dead body in the ditch. As it turns out they discover a man beat up and robbed in the ditch. They call the sheriff and an ambulance. He is in the hospital and gets out but he wants to come back to Hope Springs. There is no room at the Inn so Karen offers to let him stay at her families home.
He has amnesia and does not remember anything about his life. This family takes him in and it really shows you how the Amish feel. I knew they did not live with electricity but not why. I knew they had no tv but not why. But I learned alot during this book.
This one is 3 - 3.5 stars for me. It was a nice, sweet story with a little mystery added in. I like the amnesia angle with the male main character. For me, this story also provided a little insight into the Amish lifestyle that I only knew a little about.
One thing that bothered me is that the book could change chapters in the middle of a scene, but other times scenes would change from one paragraph to the next with no indication that it was happening. It would catch me off guard, and I would stop reading because I felt like I had missed something. It happened way too many times to have been an accident. It was very odd.
All in all though, a nice story, and I enjoyed the ending.
I was drawn to this story because of the past tragedy that befell Karen Imhoff’s family and the long road to emotional recovery that has robbed Karen of a life of her own as she becomes a mother to her 3 surviving siblings. The plight of the stranger she rescues on her property is heartbreaking but the acceptance and support Karen and her family provide to John Doe reflects the community’s Christian faith in numerous ways. The romance between John and Karen is very satisfying and the ongoing mystery surrounding John’s continuing amnesia adds a depth of mystery that I found quite appealing.
Not a bad read but the mystery of who beat up 'John Doe' was left up in the air. There were some good characterizations in the story. John's wish to become Amish was left up in the air. He has a business to run and how was he going to do that as an Amish?
Karen Imhoff finds a unconscious man in a ditch on her way to take her brother and sister to school. When he leaves the hospital he doesn't remember anything. Their journey makes this a 5 star story.
Unfortunately I didn't get to read enough Christmas books this year, maybe next year!
But this one was a cute read.
An Amish Christmas by Patricia Davids is the story of a young Amish woman, Karen Imhoff who finds a young man by the side of the road, injured. It is clear that he is Englisch, but badly injured, and most likely on purpose. She gets help for him, and he is taken to the hospital but when he comes to it turns out that he has lost a good portion of his memories, including who he is, where he is from, and what happened to bring him to Amish country.
In an effort to find himself, John Doe decides that Amish country is as good as any to stay in and try to discover more about himself. After all, he probably had to be there for a reason, right? A turn of fate puts him rooming in the Dawdi house where Karen lives with her family, and getting closer to her as she helps him to untangle the mystery about himself. And she is so sweet, beautiful and kind. He finds himself drawn to her, yet she is untouchable. She is Amish, and he is Englisch.
Will Karen help John Doe discover his past? Or is it forever lost with only a new future to look forward to? And is there a chance for them? Or will the truth about himself destroy it all...?
Read An Amish Christmas to find out!
The mystery drew me in right away. And I couldn't for the life of me guess what was about to happen ahead. While it was clear that someone had probably put John Doe in peril on purpose, the reasons why remained unclear until the very end.
This book was definitely a page-turner and hard to put down (except when I had to) until the end.
I love mysteries and I realize that most of them in works of fiction wrap up rather neatly and cleanly. After all, it's fiction and most Amish fiction writers want to write happy endings, plus as the audience we love reading happy endings! Yet sadly, the one thing lacking in this book was the ending. While I didn't predict it, it was so quick to wrap up and almost too perfect. There's the "perfect" fiction ending you oft find in so much fiction and then there's the way-too-perfect-so-much-so-that-you-cannot-even-believe-it ending that just takes away from the entire storyline. Sadly, this book falls into the latter category.
Cute Christmas read? Yes.
Best Christmas read? No.
Worth reading if you already have it and need a Christmas book? Probably.
All in all, I am mixed. It had so much going for it that I loved but the ending just ruined it for me. So in the end it was probably a draw.
2.5 out of 5 stars.
That being said, I would read Patricia Davids again. There was so much I loved about this book that I would like to believe the ending of this one was an anomaly and her other books are completely satisfying!
Karen was taking her brother's and sister to school since she had a job interview. Her dad had broken his arm and could no longer shoe horses as was his profession. With his arm in a sling, Karen was trying to find a job to help with the bills. As she was taking them to school, her little sister saw someone laying beside the road. As she went back to see, they found a man there with no shoes on. He had a gash on his head. They got their dad to help with the man. Karen wanted to help him since he was bleeding. He did not know who he was. He needed to stay somewhere and the inn was full. Karen took him home so he would pay them for money. This was a way to earn money. He stayed with them and helped with chores. He wanted to learn more about God, so he started to reading the Bible and ask questions. Christmas was coming and he wanted to get presents. But they did not do those things on Christmas day because they wanted to keep the birth of Christ as a holy day. The day after they gave little things to one another. He finally found out who he was. Everyone knew him as John Doe. His real name was Jonathan. He was having flashbacks and thought one meant he was married. Only, the lady he saw in his memory was married to his best friend. He was coming to let her family know she had died when someone beat him up and stole his shoes. They discovered they loved each other, and planned on marrying. Good book....
