That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon

Rate this book
Spice trader Cinnamon's quiet life is turned upside down when she ends up on a quest with a fiery demon in this irreverently quirky rom-com fantasy that is sweet, steamy, and funny as hell—perfect for fans of  Legends & Lattes  and  The Dragon's Bride.

All she wanted to do was live her life in peace—maybe get a cat, expand the family spice farm. Really, anything that didn't involve going on an adventure where an orc might rip her face off. But they say the Goddess has favorite, and if so, Cin is clearly not one of them...

After saving the demon Fallon in a wine-drunk stupor, all Fallon wants to do is kill an evil witch enslaving his people. And, who can blame him? But he's dragging Cinnamon along for the ride. On the bright side, at least he keeps burning off his shirt.

I'm sorry? A fantasy romcom that is ACTUALLY funny and has a Black woman lead? And there's buckets of nachos? And a lesbian centaur?

Give me a million books in this series please. This author is an insta-buy for me now.

Cinnamon is relatable AF. Fallon is a total dreamboat. The plot is well-constructed. And the smut had both quality and quantity. 4.50/5 ⭐ 3.75/5🌶 (it was well written and true to the characters, but I would have liked a little bit more filth).
There are so many good things that make this book a wonderful read!
Cinnamon's relationship with her brothers? Peak sibling energy.
Fallon's mix of golden-retriever and murderous psycho energy is immaculate.
The profanities? "Asswhooping alligators" is only one of my favourites.
The bratty energy coming off both of them is too much to handle sometimes, but the banter is top-notch.

Is there such a thing as too cozy? Too fluffy? I’m now thinking the answer is yes.

Cinnamon is a spice farmer in a small fantasy town, growing—you guessed it—cinnamon.

(Sidebar: she keeps talking about the fields on her farm. But cinnamon comes from the bark of a tree. So shouldn’t she actually be running an orchard?)

Her village worships a goddess who protects them from beings of a demon realm. Then a demon pops into existence on her farm and reveals the truth to her: The goddess is actually an evil lich aiding in the enslavement of the peaceful demon race. Cin and her new demon boyfriend go on a little trip to undo the lich’s magic and liberate the demons.

Just a heads up: the cover gives off kind of a YA vibe. This is not YA. There is smut, with light BDSM.

Cin was really funny, and her narration was a joy to read. There’s not enough diversity in fantasy, definitely not in the fluffy romance fantasy niche, so this was awesome. However, the female lead also had strong TSTL vibes. She was constantly falling for the most incredibly obvious traps, always in need of rescuing. It got old really quick.

The story tied up quickly and nicely (again, maybe a bit too nicely—tied up with a perfect glittering bow). You could read this story in one evening if you want. If you don’t like it, you’ve only lost a few hours.

I’m going to continue on to book 2 because I like the next pair of MCs, who were both introduced in book 1.

I was genuinely looking forward to this. That cover had me immediately in love. Unfortunately it didn't quite live up to my hopes :/

🍂 The language is very modern despite it being fantasy. Which isn't inherently bad, it can actually be fun and nice. Buuuut this was just a little too over the top for me. It was less fun and more "omg I'm so random and quirky" vibe for me.
"I don't know man, seems kind of suss."

🍂 Jokes over sincerity. I felt like some of the moments that needed tension and sincerity were undercut but jokes and giggling.

🍂 Lampshading. So in one scene they're attacked by rapist bandits, and:
Oh. Bandit rapists. How cliche. I couldn't even pretend to be surprised. Every adventure book I've ever read had at least one scene where the hero dashingly defeats a group of bandits.

Calling attention to the cliche, is not subverting it. Honestly, if you're gonna do a cliche at least be sincere about it. A cliche isn't inherently bad, it depends on the usage. This meta-awareness with no subversion didn't work for me.

🍂 The burning city:

🍂 Dub-con:

🍂 Maledom. I am not a fan. And honestly, had I know this was maledom I wouldn't have picked up the book. It wasn't even listed as BDSM on the GR shelves, so I had legit no clue. This might be a plus for someone else, tho!

🍂 Fallon was... kind of a bad character? And I don't mean morally. Don't give a shit about that. He just felt inconsistent and over-powered.

🍂 Pacing issues in the romance. They fell in love so fucking quick to me. Especially Fallon. And I kept wondering why. First he says it's because Cin is brave, and he's never met any women like her. Except... this is a fantasy world where women go out fighting demons (misguided, yes) on the regular. Doesn't mean that there are a lot of badass, brave women? What made Cin different. I couldn't figure it out. Until we learn that But that makes me question why Fallon would behave the way he did towards her in the beginning.

🍂 The "heroes" were done dirty. So the Goddess chooses a party of people to go fight demons every 15 years. This happens to be one of them. We know nothing about them, except, that Cin dislikes one of them for being demanding and entitled. We don't hear about the rest of the "heroes" until the very end. And the way it was handeled was so disappointing to me.
Cin doesn't seem to care about people around her at all, except in some moments she does??? And for the life of me I can't figure out her internal logic. Fallon doesn't give a shit, so that's just in character for him. It's because Cin seems to be intended to be the "good one" between the two that I don't get it.

🍂 The epilogue:

Aaaaanyways, some praise:
🍂 I liked the family dynamic in the beginning

🍂 Some of the jokes were legit funny

I did this as buddy read and I think that made reading this a more fun experience. My buddy also mentioned how much more impactful it might've been, if we got some POVs from the "heroes" along the way. It would've built the tension of these two forces meeting, would've shown how the conflicted looked from their sides. Oh well, that was not to be.

Final rating: 2 stars. Not awful, just too many annoyances for me to like it.

this is such a delightful cozy fantasy, but it also does have some higher stakes at play, while also talking about some, and having some, heavier themes and topics. (please look at some content warnings down below!) but i really enjoyed this one, especially the first half and set up. this also is a four part quest storyline, and you all know how much i love watching characters travel to their adventures! i was so impressed with this, and i promise it is a very high three star, but i just didn't love how... intense.. the love interest was towards the last half of this book. but i very much do not think that will be an issue for many readers, especially romance readers! plus cinnamon is just the absolutely best main character, and she is so effortlessly funny! i am so excited to continue on in this world!

author's cw/tw: light bdsm, dubcon, violence, sexually explicit content

other cw/tw that i wrote down while reading: drinking, loss of a loved one in past, grief depiction, threat of sexual violence, violence, abuse, slavery, blood, torture, vomit, animal death (alligator haha), mention of kidnapping, fatphobic comments that are in a negative light + immediately challenged/shut down

What happens when you mix steamy romance, a 7-foot-tall demon, and a plot that could have been scripted by a fairy tale's most irreverent cousin, you ask? You get this book, that’s what - and boy does it revel with gleeful abandon in its own absurdity.

Picture this: Our protagonist, Cinnamon (yes, her name is Cinnamon, while her siblings are named Cumin, Chili, and Cherry - don't ask me why Cherry is the only non-spice name; I spent the whole book thinking about it, and I still have no answer), has a few too many drinks and ends up saving Fallon, a towering demon who is both murderous and hot. If you've ever thought, "I wish romance novels had more supernatural proportions and less subtlety," this book is tailor-made for you.

The book embraces romance tropes with the enthusiasm of a teenager on BookTok. The age gap? A hundred years. The power imbalance? He's arguably one of the most powerful demons alive; she's a lowly human who has never had the need or desire to fight (and honestly, relatable). The size difference? He could probably use her as a footstool. The author fully acknowledges these clichés and pushes them to delightfully ridiculous extremes, making it clear that she's in on the joke - even if it still irritates me on principle (and it really, really does).

In terms of steam, this book doesn't just turn up the heat; it practically sets the pages on fire. This leans into erotica territory, so keep that in mind if explicit sex scenes are not your preference. I found the vocabulary a touch repetitive, and there were a few turn-offs for me, personally (Please stop calling full-grown women "good girls" during sex!! I'm begging you!!), but they weren't terrible by any means.

Cinnamon, our spunky heroine, is fun but a bit underdeveloped. The narrative gives her a funny voice and a few introspective moments about her sister and her lack of adventurous spirit due to grief and trauma, but I was craving more depth. As for Fallon, while his existence is an amalgamation of every possible romantic lead trope known to man, he is more affable than I initially expected - and I was surprised to find myself liking him. Until the last chapter or two, where his protective tendencies really jumped out, revealing controlling behaviour that would make any reader with a modicum of autonomy shiver.

Plot-wise, things move at a breakneck pace. Characters shift entire worldviews in an instant and major decisions are made with the kind of rapidity that only exists in fiction. And while the book tries to touch on some heavier themes, like the ethics of demon slavery, and why we require non-human animals to speak like us to acknowledge their sentience and personhood, it never delves too deeply—likely because the author's focus is firmly on the frothy, romantic fun (which is totally fine, to be fair).

Overall, That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon is a charming, tongue-in-cheek romance that's more about pleasure and fantasy than about groundbreaking literature. If you're looking for a light-hearted, steamy escapade that's self-aware enough to make you chortle, this book might just be your cup of tea. For those who crave more profound character development and more intricate plotting, it might feel like a fizzy soda with a smidgen too much bubble.

Ah hell. This is up there with some of the cutest shit I’ve read.

Where do I even start? There were so many different elements that made this story so great to read.

Cinnamon? (Yes, that's actually her name!) Adorable. Fallon, her-demon-enemy-turned-husband? Even more adorable. 🥹

She’s someone that is not interested in adventure whatsoever. She’s only interested in living that peaceful, stress-free, boring life.

Relatable. ✌🏾

But what do you know? On an adventure she goes.

It was fantastical, it had adventure, great side characters, steam😮‍💨, magic and best of all? It had me laughing out loud.

I love what Kimberly Lemming has done here. It was unique, well-written, and well developed. I had such a great time reading this! I hope we get so much more in this series!

Y’all! Please pick this book up. Honestly, I’m known more so for reading contemporary romance, but I heard so many good things about this one that I had to give it a try! It’s not only cute, but hilarious and steamy. We follow a main character by the name of Cinnamon after she casually runs into a demon after a night out. After attempting to attack her, he reveals that the goddess they worship is really evil and has made all of the demons under her power lose control. They then set off on an adventure to destroy said goddess and free those who have been bound to her. This book was not only adventurous, but contained the cutest romance ever. I could not get enough of Cinnamon and Fallon. They couldn’t get enough of each other no matter how much they tried to deny it at first. I wish there was a little more steam, but to be honest this was a great start to the beginning of the series. The world building was great as was the character development which got me more excited to see even more romances in this world play out. If you’re a fan of fantasy romance, I would recommend checking this one out.

2.5 Stars rounded up to 3 for goodreads. (NOTE: this review is based on reading the self-published version)

I can totally see why people have fun with this, but it just ticks so many of my personal dislike boxes:
- Juvenile, choppy, stream of conciousness writing style
- highly modern slang and colloquialisms in an otherwise medieval fantasy setting ("seems kinda sus," "that's a whole ass mood," "catch these hands," and so, so many more). [See also: my same exact issue with Jennifer L. Armentrout and Rebecca Yarros. I'm just not a fan of anachronistic writing in fantasy most of the time.]
- Instalove via "mates" - both tropes I'm not a fan of
- plotholes on plotholes on plotholes
- Very much in need of another round of editing for typos (which it should be getting now that it's being traditionally published, so yay!)

The smut should be the saving grace for this but it's just the same smut scene three times over, no variety.

I'm bummed! I really wanted to like this one. I bought the first and second books at the same time so I might give the second a shot some day to see if it improved.

goddamn u booktok. u got me again with a bad rec.

this reads like someone's first fanfic. the dialogue is wildly out of place and the stream of consciousness writing is so long-winded. the characters accepted questioning their fundamental beliefs about their world with minimal friction. plus, there was so much "telling" with very little showing.

i totally get the value of a fun, lighthearted book. but I think this book had many technical issues which prevented me from being immersed. i see some promise in future work, but I think they need a strong editor to get them there.

i have not been so baffled by the positive reception of a book for a long time, but here we are.

the time i got drunk and saved a demon is a fantasy romantic comedy. based on this combo of genres, i thought i would be walking into a work where there's a blend of development of a romantic relationship between characters with a humorous flair immersed in a fantasy setting. there's a black female lead in a monster fucker? let's go! unfortunately, all elements of this are handled on a continuum of poorly to terribly.

fantasy:
no one actually lives in this world. the worldbuilding is on the same level of actors standing in front of a green screen for all the background to be fill in later. this book's plot has cinnamon finding out the goddess that her people worship is a false god and demons aren't actually evil and she sets out with one, fallon, to take her down. the entire system of faith that guides this world has been thrown off its axis. what should our characters do? struggle with their new view of the world and old belief that have guided them for so long?

hell no, cinnamon has very little reaction to this beyond some little quips before she's off with fallon. as they tell more humans, they too have very little reaction to this and also move forward with ease. the characters we follow are just so happen to be either demons, who have been enslaved and murdered a lot so no obligation to follow anything here, or humans who aren't devout despite talking about going to the temples frequently. the fantasy element could have been just through the monsters, but the 'we have to kill not!god' is the primary framing and i have never seen someone so disinterested into diving into this despite making the deliberate choice of centralizing it.

romance/characterization:
cinnamon and fallon are neither compelling as individual characters nor as a romantic pair. there's no emotional connection between them so later tentpole moments such as fallon going on a murderous rampage when she's hurt do not hit at all. there is no tension in their relationship as the narrative does its best to undercut this with self-aware almost turns to the camera about cliches or many convenient resolutions (in the afterglow, cinnamon freaks out about getting knocked up, but never fear my dear, fallon drew a birth control rune on himself right before it happened, off-screen).

part of the appeal with this couple (allegedly) is that cinnamon is fallon's morality chain, but that is also very shoddy. cinnamon tells fallon he's not allowed to kill people unless they're really terrible such as slavers and rapists. but it is a flippant command, because she just does not care when he murders an entire village that theoretically includes innocents. she doesn't care when he swipes the head off someone who's an antagonist, but rightfully angry at her when she murders his fellow goddess warrior companion (after saying she would not kill a fellow human a line before) that she was just peacefully trying to take down. in universe, they are the villain protagonists, but there's just no work done to explore this beyond putting them in the role.

the sex scenes are middling at best that i can't even agree with someone who said this is more erotica than romance. cinnamon's discovery that she has a pain kink reads like a bandaid has been slapped on due to the author realizing an earlier 'no means yes' scene is actually dubcon . fallon goes on monologues about all the wicked nasty things he'll do to her and i'm just whispering if you don't eat her pussy already, jesus god. as there's no atmosphere with the world, there's no tension or buildup with the sex scenes, they're just as exposition heavy and move on as the rest of the book.

comedy:
the humor in this story is completely tiktok based. i have no issue with modern language being used, but i realized it's here to mimic how people use sounds on tiktok for a user's own unique video. a notable example early on is fallon fancying up 'aren't you tired of being nice? don't you want to go apeshit?' to convince cinnamon to kill some slavers/rapists. every joke is set up like this in what i suspect is an attempt to recreate scenes on the platform. i can see why it did numbers on booktok. the one time i came close to a chuckle was 93% of my way through the book and that joke wasn't viral trend based so maybe lemming can be funny. the use of modern language here is only meant to show how plugged into social media you are rather than an integral element of the setting. it highlights shortcomings of the world building and actually working with the genre chosen.

in the author's note, lemming states that this is the first book she has ever written and i think that's very obvious. i was looking forward to this since i think it's neat that more black women are writing fantasy romance and monster romances as well (even if this is also just women fucking more cosmetically enhanced humans/shifters, baby steps and status quo. but that's an issue with the genre as it exists now, not unique to this book). however, light hearted and comedic should not mean shallow and i question if that's even an accurate descriptor as there's heavy stuff dropped in here (false religion! slavery! systemic killing!), but it's without a care and lemming quickly disengages with it after introducing it. i think the sequel will be more of the same especially as lemming changed the title of the sequel as a swipe to some poorly articulated modern language complaints. fortunately for her, she has her support as shown by the average rating here, so she'll do just fine. brie can have her fun with her extremely pale boy werewolf.

5.26 - i'm going to be back later with an itemized list of thirty years of disagreements ('sweet jesus,' you say. 'a hamilton reference in 2022?' when aht aht aht, there are unfortunately lyric drops in this story, we're on even footing here!) but this is my worst read of the year so far. which means it's surpassed katee robert's the dragon's bride. why are my dragons taking a beating this year, what have they done to y'all?

A fantasy romcom with a feisty heroine and a demon? YAASSS
This was such a treat to read! I had just finished reading a few dark/angsty reads, so listening to this was a soothing balm to my soul🤣.

The book opens up with the Hero's Call Festival, honoring the goddess Myra who's been protecting people from "bad" demons for a looooong time. It all seems nice and fun until Cin/Cinnamon's (24) approached by a masked man trying to rob her. Now, I know what you're thinking... Cin should be afraid, and she should be... except she recognizes this man as Harper Huckabee, and SHE ends up chasing after him instead 🤣. In the middle of all this chasing, she hears groaning from the opposite side. Of course, being the benevolent person that she is, she goes to help this poor, struggling man. Little did she know, she's ACTUALLY helping a demon... and once he regains some strength back...

SHE'S the one that needs to run from HIM... 🤣

Lucky for her, this demon's running through the fields her family owns, a cinnamon field, and, well, cinnamon weakens demons😬. Phew... good... she survived😅 (for now 🤣).

But then this demon, Fallon (124), shows up at her parents' house and requests Cin to help him defeat Myva, the "goddess" that's really a lich (a necromancer). Why does he need her help? Because he can't get close enough to Myva's temple, which they need to do in order to destroy her goblets/chalices that she's been using to house her power against them, and Cin can do it. All she has to do is break them and her family will be safe from any harm since Fallon's claiming them...

If only there wasn't so much tension between them👀

What I loved: Potential spoilers
—the number of times I was LMAO 🤣🤣. Listen Linda... this was a breath of fresh air! I've read tons of fantasy/paranormal/monster romances in my life, and I can confidently say that NONE of them have ever made me laugh (OUT LOUD) like this book 🤣. Did I look like a crazy person driving around town or showering while giggling? You bet I did 🤣, and I don't even care😎. The first scene that had me cackling was the opening scene where she's being "robbed." Bahahaha, well the joke's on the robber since she ended up trying to rob HIM back after chasing him 🤣 (which is when she heard our poor Fallon groaning).

—CIN!!! She freaking cracked me up, but she also made me cry and feel her struggles/internal debates and her worries. I just loved her

—the🔥. It's on the slow-burn side (kissing and touching in the 30s%, 💦 exchanges at almost 60%, and full-on 🔥by 74%👀. Fallon purposely makes her wait, so when they finally do it, it's 🥵. Plus, he loves how she tastes 👀; can't get better than that😉🤷🏻‍♀️

—Fallon's dirty mouth🔥. Jeeeezus Christ this demon could cause a person suffering from low blood pressure to get a heart attack 🥵💦. Who'd have known that demons could spout such filth from their mouths 💦. I mean, he gets Cin to beg him 👀. If I were her, I'd be begging too 🙃😮‍💨

—CNC!!!! Sigh... when Fallon realizes Cin wants this, I almost expired on the spot 🥵💦

—Fallon's JPness 😈. Good thing he's all about marking his woman 😉. Gotta claim your territory 👀. Plus, I tend to love...

—OMD. It's brief, but it's there 👀 I love me a jealous MMC and Fallon was about to commit more murder 🤣

—the world-building. I enjoyed it; I found this easy to understand (unlike some more convoluted worlds I've read)

—umm... the side characters. First of all, Cin's family grows spices and her brothers' names are Cumin and Chili (they had another sister named Cherry who was killed😞), and her best friend's name is Brie and guess what kind of job her family does? LOL, they have a dairy farm and make cheese🤣. Like.. this is GOLD!!! 🤣 we have lots of other side characters which I adored

—how protective Fallon is. When Tyler Huckabee slaps Cin (ahem... after she hurled apples at him 👀), you best believe Fallon was ready to kill 💅 and he wasn't even there, but she's his... so don't be touching he🤷🏻‍♀️ 💅

—how swoony Fallon is too. Sigh... I mean, he washes muck out of Cin's hair 😭(if you’ve ever had your hair washed, you know how soothing this is), and then he officially falls for her when she kills an alligator that almost got to him. I mean, how can we not swoon? Plus, he vowed not to kill humans for her (unless they're rapists) and he resists 🥹...swoooooon😍

—earning 1000 points. Oh lawd... the fact that Fallon's down with earning 1000 points before she considers marrying him is commendable👀. He could easily take, but he doesn’t 🥹

—the versatility of Cin's dresses 👀. This girl has a whole store hidden; I need that 🤣 (I have a purse, but imagine how much you could store in your dress!!?)

—the shadow hands scene 🤣 bahahaha... my sides were hurting from laughing (actually, many scenes did this lol)

—nachos!!! 'nuff said 🤣 (also... Cin gives up her nachos to help the werewolf/Felix gain straight 🤣 SEE! So charitable and selfless 🥹)

—Cin saving the demons (Felix and Ambrose) before they were skinned made me love her even more 🥰

—a DRAGON?!? Yaaaasss 👏🏻

What I wanted more of
—more . Well, duhhhh 🤣 The tension was just so good!

—a proper epilogue😐. I mean, I'm not mad at it since there's a second book already out and a third one on its way, so I'm assuming we'll see more of Cin and Fallon, but STILLLLLLL!
ETA: the new release version doesn’t have a better epilogue 😒 it’s the same as before 😒 sigh

Overall, I loooved this!

⚠️safety squad ⚠️

Sadly DNF. There were 2 main things that caused me to give up early on this book despite the large number of positive reviews:

(1) There was just way too much use of modern slang and meme references in what was supposed to be a separate fantasy world. I don’t need formal dialogue to enjoy fantasy, but the sheer amount of references was just very distracting and made the book feel pretty dated only a few months later.

(2) I’m also just not on board with the insta-trust from the FMC. It just made no sense. Imagine if you will … a creature that you’ve spent your entire life believing is evil, and who has already tried his very level best to kill you (literally yesterday), shows up at your house, threatens your family, nearly also kills your brother, but then a few minutes later, he tells you that your entire way of life/belief system is a lie such that the aforementioned attempted murders are fine… The FMC’s response to this exact situation was to just shrug and accept this no problem with no questions asked. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So even though it’s nice to try a new author on KU, this book was just not for me.

FUN FUN FUN!!!

I went into this not expecting much, but then I found myself DEVOURING IT!!! ITS AMAZING!

Kimberly Lemming is a new-to-me author that I have just fallen in love with and will be reading every single book published by her!

The writing is sooo easy to read and incredibly witty. Very lighthearted read with wonderful characters, and the pacing was great! It didn’t feel rushed, and it wasn’t slow; It was the perfect pace for the plot (and the romance!).

Their conversations reminded me of texts between my friends and me, and I was laughing so much! I haven’t laughed this much reading a book in a while! I took screenshots of my highlights and sent them to my friends because they’re so funny and such a mood!!

The FMC’s name is Cinnamon, which I ADORED!! All her siblings' names too! Cumin, Chili, and Cinnamon! So clever too because they are spicer farmers!

Cin is so fun, intelligent, and a strong woman. I LOVED HER SO MUCH! She is so relatable! This book is a single POV (Cin’s POV); honestly, I didn’t mind because her POV is the best. I wasn’t thinking about Fallon’s POV because I didn’t think we needed it. We got so much from Cin’s POV!

Fallon…FALLON!!!!! The beautiful shifter/ dragon! He was so protective of her, he was like WHO DID THIS TO YOU, and I’LL KILL WHOEVER TOUCHES YOU. UGHH, i love a protective mmc!

The banter between Cin and Fallon was incredible! I loved their interactions, especially because of the forced proximity.

Overall, I think this is a great book, a mix of lighthearted romcom, a fun quest, and SPICE!! I would definitely recommend this!

I can’t wait to read the second book!

read if you like:

→ Monster Romance
→ Enemies-to-Lovers (kinda!)
→ Forced Proximity
→ He Falls First
→ open-door romance, steamy

That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon is a delightfully cute and short romantasy featuring a strong FMC who is forced to save the day with the help of a sexy demon. Along their journey, the two find themselves unable to resist each other and get up to plenty of shenanigans inside and outside of the bedroom. I cannot recommend this series and the writing of Kimberly Lemming enough; I absolutely breeze through every one of her books. They are seriously jammed pack full of fun and steam; every one is light hearted in nature and includes feisty and relatable FMCs that are so easy to love.

Well this book was a trip and a half. What a crazy and imaginative story. This heroine was sassy, strong, fierce and hilarious. She went through a huge amount of personal growth in this story but never lost her edge. I loved this world she lived in; this fantastical and diverse world. This book can be read as a romantic adventure story but if you are paying attention, you will see that it is so much more. It is a commentary of so many poignant issues, like why we should not just blindly listen to the powers that be, whether they are religious or political, and why we should never passively allow ourselves to remain ignorant of wrong doing when it is happening right in front of us.
But forget all that for a minute, Fallon the demon dragon is my new book boyfriend. He is silly and sarcastic and protective and sweet. He had me when he told her she was going to be his wife after she severed the spine of an alligator. I love a dude who can support his woman and not be intimidated by her badass-ness.
After reading so much crap lately with so much veiled misogyny, this book was a breath of fresh air.
It reads like the princess bride if the princess bride was a feminist novel. And the sex scenes were hot.
The only reason I didn’t give this a full five stars is because it dragged in the middle before the quest really started to heat up and I would have loved more description of both the lead characters as I had trouble picturing them. The ending was slightly abrupt as well, I’m not one for extended epilogues but the epilogue here was a paragraph long. However this book is listed as Mead Mishaps #1 so I suppose that means there is more the come.. I can’t wait.

I gave this a second chance and had a good time. I do not recommend the audio.

I’d say this is a solid 3.5 rounded up. Fun, fantasy romance. While I enjoyed the characters and the adventure, the romance moved too quickly and I didn’t feel much towards the pair as a couple. Still a good time. Would read the next one.

Rom-com meets fantasy romance with a tongue-in-cheek/quirky sense of humor and a side of BDSM? That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon is mostly a delightful romp following a spice trader named Cinnamon who (eponymously) gets drunk and saves a demon before getting pulled into an adventuring quest with a hot demon who wants to make her his wife.

I found it to be genuinely funny and got such a kick out of things like the fact that Cinnamon's nickname is Cin (I mean, Sin falls for a demon? lol) and that she has a secret snack pocked in her skirts. This DOES also get pretty steamy and as the content warnings let you know at the beginning there is some dubious consent and BDSM elements. Not necessarily my favorite kind of steamy romance, but I enjoyed the rest of the book so much I wasn't too bothered by it. And if that's your thing, all the better. I will say that while there are several explicit scenes, there is also a lot of plot and character development so this is much more than just monster erotica. (not that there is anything wrong with monster erotica, I just want to set expectations!) I would definitely read more from this author in the future.

“Last night, you demanded we bring you cheese and then stated that you were the cheese queen.”

Tropes you will find:
📚 Touch her and d*e
📚 Quest
📚 Enemies to lovers (sort of)
📚 Forced proximity
📚 Delicious Banter
📚 Found family and real family
📚 Praise k*nk

Well this was just absolutely everything. And I mean EVERYTHING!

First, let’s talk about Cin - given the first line of the story was about her drunk and wanting cheese, I knew I’d connect with her. I just didn’t realise how much I’d connect with her. And it wasn't just her love of cheese, snacks and wine. She was very much content with a quiet life and that resonates with me so much. She did, however, end up being such an unintentional bad ass though.

Fallon, sweet demon daddy. A terribly vicious side (hello, demon!) but also a heart of gold and probably one of the sweetest MMCs I’ve ever read!

The banter, the adventure, the spice, the real and found family.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect going into this but it was a hell of a ride. I had such a fantastic time!

I highlighted so much of this it was so dang difficult to pick a quote!!

I can’t wait dive into more of Kimberly’s writing!

3.5 stars - This was so campy and cute! The writing/pacing was a little choppy, but the overall story, world, and characters were just a great time, and I'm looking forward to continuing in the series

2.5 stars

I just think that super cozy fantasy just isn't for me. It was hard for me to read a fantasy where they talked so contemporary and where things were just cutesy and over the top. I never really fell in love with the story or believed in the romance. It wasn't a super bad book, I just don't think the vibes of this kind of book are what I want. The romance felt a bit superficial and the plot was pretty forgettable.
