I was glad to see that on this second time around, I still really loved Kiss of Crimson. Dante was just as sexy as I remembered. Chase was just as yummy. This book had some great action, some smokin' hot smexy time, and some very yummy warriors all rolled into one awesome read. Dante and Tess had a great connection. Tess had trust issues and Dante was in fear of the visions he has been seeing his whole life. Both were not looking for a relationship let alone love but they were destine to be mates. Not only did I love Tess and Dante, I really loved Chase. Chase seemed so buttoned up but under all that was a total badass. My heart broke for the pain Chase had to endure over his nephew. Elise seemed sweet but I really liked the peek at Tegan's sense of humor. And Rio my poor broken Rio. He needs his boo boos kissed and made all better! I'm on to the next book.

"I don't want to feel anything for you, Dante."

"God, Tess, I don't want to feel anything for you either."

Now, that's a relationship. Built on mutual disdain for feelings. I'm hooked!

aw, that's the nicest thing you've ever given me!

So, in this book, we get Vishous Dante's story. He has terrible visions of the future. Ahem...

While out one night, fighting the enemy, he gets shot a bunch of times and ends up at a veterinary clinic where the doctor helps him. *cough*

And, then he erases her memory of the incident. Mmm hmm.

He also gets paired up with a civilian vampire cop. Yes, cop. He starts out giving this guy a hard time, but they eventually become bffs.

Totally original storyline!

The good news is that there are some differences, and they are all for the better. It's like someone figured out all of the bad things about Black Dagger Brotherhood and made them better. So, don't worry, we don't get a ghost-girlfriend at the end.

Ghost girlfriends are soooo played!

So, even though there is the whole this-is-totally-stolen-from-another-book vibe going on, I for one am really enjoying this series. JR Ward is giving positive reviews of these books, so if she doesn't mind, I'm cool with it.

I enjoyed this second book in Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series even more than the first. Dante and Tess meet in her veterinarian clinic when he’s badly injured and needs blood. He’s a vampire. She’s human. I really liked Tess, and her special abilities! Also, this one had a really interesting subplot involving a drug that was being sold on the street and had terrible effects on vampires, and it gave book two that extra zing! Some interesting side characters were introduced that I’m excited to read more about in future books. Glad I discovered this series.

Review from August 20th, 2019
I absolutely loved reading this a 2nd time. I think I actually loved it more this time than the 1st read.

I had completely forgotten how much of a part certain characters played in this story.

I also forgot about the 2 'Harvards'!

A fantastic read that I highly recommend to lovers of Adult Paranormal Romance.
It has everything you need for a great fun read.
The romance is hot and steamy.
AND!
Everything I said below is still true.

6 Stars! Full of action and suspense.
Extremely well written.
I was drawn in immediately and loved every second.
Dante and Tess are awesome, so well defined you feel connected to them immediately.
Filled with surprises, you are never sure what will happen next. The world and characters felt real and fluid.
I am now obsessed with the 'Midnight Breed' series!

Breed warrior Dante
Special ability: Having visions of the future
Age: Around 240 years old

Breed mate Tess
Special ability: Heal or kill through touch
Occupation: Veterinarian
Mark place: Right hand, between fore finger and thumb

Settings: Boston

I loved Dante and Tess together. He is like the ultimate bad boy in leather (called the Stallion), and she is a loner, completely dedicated to her work independent woman. The book is a real page-turner. I read it in one go.

What we learn in this book:
-We learn that the breedwarriors' abilities are inherited by their mothers.
-There is a new situation with a new drug called 'crimson' which may influence vampires but not humans
-We meet agent Chase who is looking for his nephew. Very conservative guy, not very likable. His personality is developing in the next books.

2011 reread: Edited to 5 stars because DANTE IS SEXY AS HELL!!

Kiss of Crimson is another solid read by author Lara Adrian. Dante's story is one of intense passion and love. The chemistry between Dante and Tess is instant and electrifying. From the moment they meet, it is clear from the beginning that they are meant for each other. Adrian does an amazing job at telling Dante's story.

I found that I instantly liked Tess the moment she was introduced. As a private practiced vet, she seems to have most of her life in control. However, everything changes when Dante steps into her life. For some reason, Dante has his way of getting through Tess' barriers that she walled up when she was a child. Seeing those walls crumble before her and allowing herself to be vulnerable in front of Dante is a beautiful thing to see. Here she learns to trust others again and herself.

And Dante - the wicked, hot vampire that wields the twin malebranche blades. How hot is he? Dante kicks some serious ass in this one and I loved every single moment of it. However, there's also another side of him that is much more vulnerable. These two sides put together make Dante so desirable. He's my favourite warrior yet!

Sterling Chase is also introduced in this book. And although I didn't like him at first, he's starting to grow on me more and more. Chase has got his own demons to deal with and I'm really interested to see where Adrian takes him.

Yup yup, everyone liked it.

Well, I can't say that I didn't but... I expected a bit more from it, to be frank.
I've read this story numerous times. I don't want something original, but I want the characters to be a bit different than the rest. Or the friend-characters to be special. Or the writing style. Or even the names to have something special (Ok, Dante, the main male character, is also from Italy (the 18th century though), that was a nice touch, but I'm selfish like that, I wanted more).

So unfortunately, this was a "meh" read for me. Not bad, but not exceptional either. Just... ok.

This book was a dud. It was boring, there is tons and tons of filler that detracts from the "romance", there are too many clichés and stereotypical romance story moments and it's still too similar in my opinion to JR Ward's Black Dagger Brother Hood series--the difference there being that Ward's is top notch.

The love story between Dante and Tess is not well developed and the vampire world story takes up too much "space" between the brief times the couple make it back together again. Nothing really happens between them until a good 150 pages into the story even.

This is more a paranormal story than a paranormal romance. The story outline on the back cover is very misleading--it's like a movie preview that looks really good but those are the best parts of the 2 hour movie and everything in between is a waste of time.

I didn't particularly enjoy Book 1 in the series but Book 2 is certainly worse.

I like a good paranormal but not when it copies off every other book out there and rolls it into a weak story.

I feel so dirty saying this, but I am loving this series! The BDB similarities continue unabashedly, but I can’t not read it.

The second book in the Midnight Breed series tells the story of Dante and Tess. Dante is yet another hot, broody vampire (aren't they all? *dreamy sigh*). Viciously wounded, he is found late one night by Tess, our very likeable heroine, who tries to help him and ends up as a blood source. Too late into the piece, Dante discovers that Tess is actually a breedmate and by drinking from her, he is halfway through completing a blood bond with her. Whoops!!!

I really liked the twist on this relationship. Tess is in the dark about what is actually going on for most of the book after having her memory wiped of her first encounter with Dante, but she cannot help but fall for the gorgeously hot but mysterious man that suddenly appears in her life. And I loved watching Dante fall hopelessly in love with Tess and become fiercely and swoonily protective of her.

Running alongside the romance is a storyline about young vampires going missing and a drug that turns vampires into Rogues. The Breed boys are joined in their operation by Agent Sterling Chase of the Boston Darkhaven (this would be the ‘Butch’ character). I initially thought Chase was a bit straight-laced for the rest of the boys, but after a very surprising visit to a nightclub, I've gotta say I'm intrigued!! I really like him as an addition to the story, and loved the snarky relationship that he develops with Dante. I’m looking forward to seeing more of him in future books.

There is also a bit of a set up for the next book – with the mysteriously dangerous Zsadist Tegan having a bit of a moment with emotionally scarred Elise. Looks like there are going to be many obstacles for the two of them, but I can’t wait to see them get their HEA.

The action is good with a few surprises thrown in. There are some very steamy scenes, and quite a bit of swoon. The ending was a bit abrupt, but I expect that the storylines will continue into the next books, so I’m not too concerned.

Overall, a great read. I’m looking forward to more!

So I re-read this after 5 years and this was a mistake. My rating went from 5 stars to 1. So, yeah.

I didn't like the Hero. Such a manwhore. After biting and drinking blood from the Heroine (which saved his life!) he saw her tattoo that marked her as a special woman, whom he now was bound to. Eternally. He then wipes her memories. Hero doesn't want or need a woman in his life. And instead of protecting her (she and her kind were hunted by the bad guys and respected and protected by the good guys) he leaves her and spends the night with 2 willing woman.
I know they aren't dating, they don't even know each other. But Heroine saved his life and they are bonded (on his side) for the rest of their lives. The least he could do is to tell her about herself and protect her.

Then there's a lot of back and forth. More memory-scrubbing. Then he becomes jealous of her ex-boyfriend. And all the lying. It isn't until the very end that he tells her he's a vampire. What a prick.

Heroine on the other hand had such bad luck with men. Her ex-boyfriend and now friend (really?) is a drug dealer. And she loves him like a brother. Heroine knows he's in love with her, but she decides to go on a date with him, stringing him along. Super sweet of her.
I found her really stupid. Goes to find her ex-boyfriend (a known drug dealer) and wants to talk to him, because she gave him the brush-off. Now she feels really sad and wants to make it up to him. What a doormat.

I had enough of the manwhore Hero and inexperienced/unfulfilled/unlucky love Heroines.

They aren't a couple until the very end. So, I regretted my re-read.

Very good book. I am liking this series more and more. The thing that I like most about this series is the interesting mythology and world-building behind the vampires. It's very dark and gritty, and the violence is in your face when it comes to humans being harmed and murdered. I think that part is almost too much for me. I love a book with intense action and a dark edge, but I do hate to see innocent people dying, and this series has a lot of that.

I didn't really find Dante or Tess very tragic, although they had issues there were dealing with. I guess not all the characters can be tortured although I certainly wouldn't mind. Dante was a character that I enjoyed reading about, but I can't say I ever fell in love with him. I do feel like Dante and Tess were meant to be together.

I liked that Tess was a veterinarian, but I think some aspects of her trade were almost simplified. The truth of the matter is that a veterinarian needs lots of help to run her practice. I was wondering how she was accomplishing all the treatment of animals and the money part with just one part-time employee. I'd like to see her give a pet intravenous medications or fluids by herself. Not an easy thing to accomplish. I was glad she didn't romanticize the economic aspects of veterinary medicine. You cannot afford to treat and save every animal and get all the bills paid. It breaks my heart, but I know that this is real life. Tess made choices to price things where she could help the most clients and their pets, but she couldn't make ends meet when it came down to it. This is one of the most heartbreaking aspects of the profession. All and all, it was nice to see a veterinarian doing her thing in these books.

I really liked Chase's character although I did not like Elise. She was a bit too whiny-mopey for me. I hope that he moves on from her and finds a real woman who's not so much of a whiny baby. Normally I don't mind a vulnerable heroine, but she bugged me. Probably because she didn't show Chase very much respect as the brother of her dead mate or see him as a flesh and blood man of merit and realize all the sacrifices he had made for her.

The part with Rio choked me up. Poor baby. Really looking forward to reading his book. I enjoyed reading scenes with the likable Gideon and his mate Savannah. Nice to see some ethnic diversity in the paranormal romance genre.

So all in all, I liked this one more than the first book, and I suspect I will like the books increasingly as the series continues. By the way, just loved little doggie, Harvard. I was so glad he was doing alright. That part nearly made me cry (with some of the stuff going on in my personal life.)

Okay, I'll get some heat for this, but though I'm not particularly fond of Kiss of Midnight (the first book in this series), this one was worse. It was slow, extremely déjà vu-ish in parts, I disliked the heroine, could never really warm up to the hero, it was slightly repetitive, etc. I could go on and on, but I'll be concise. It lacked substance to me for some reason, it was generic, and bland, while I expected more from the second book in a series, after the whole world-building is done. Unfortunately, I ended up disappointed. I have high hopes for Tegan's story, though. Keeping my fingers crossed.

The series definitely improves with the second book, although I wish everybody was a little more involved.
It was great seeing the hero and heroine not wanting to want each other. Her affection for the animals was palpable it was relaxing being in her mind.

I am already on book three.

3.5 stars.

A typical bunch of brotherhood’s story. You can change typical with vampires, shifters, Demons, Angels etc! In other word, nothing special but it wasn’t boring either.

Since, I listen audiobook version, I can do other stuff at the same time too, so that’s good:)
Many compares this series with BDB, well I don’t like that series, I forced myself to finished book #1 to see what is all about and hated it. That book made me allergic with vampire’s story and avoided them for years.

This one slightly better for me, these vampires weren’t farming women for foods like in BDB..., well that’s how I call it, farming. When you collecting women in one place for their bloods to be food.., and guess what? Those blood consumed by men only of course. Gosh! I started again, you see? I hate BDB 😡😡😡

So this one much better, no women farm for food in here...
Oh, I will give this better rating if not for the last 4 chapters, why on earth the smart and clever heroine suddenly acting so dumb like that? Also the story rushed to the finish line and ended abruptly without epilogue, oh I forgot, of course you need to read the next book in the series to see more of this couple! 😬

Summary
Dante, a member of the breed warriors, is out on a night of hunting rogues. Through a series of events, he ends up chasing a rogue, a rogue that is more dangerous than any he has encountered. Harder to kill, suffering from a  bloodlust madness that even regular rogues don't even suffer from. He ends up being shot and he comes across a veterinarian doctor, Tess, who he realizes after the fact of creating a bond to her, that she is a breedmate. Now she is his but only if he can protect her from the danger of his world. Tess has a talent and a heart for connecting with lost animals, and even though financially she is struggling she will do anything to help those in need. She is drawn to Dante, who is dangerous and makes her blood heat. She senses a connection between them, but there are so many secrets surrounding Dante. But when one of her two closest friends gets involved in some dangerous business with the rogues, with young Breeds turning rogue over the drug "Crimson" soon Tess will have to choose between a old friend and the man she is growing to love. Soon Dante and Tess will be thrown into the fire of danger, passion, and betrayal...
The Hero
Dante, is one of the Breed Warriors, and fights to protect both his kind and humans from the savagery of Rogues and their vicious appetites. What I found most intriguing about Dante was his fierce need to protect others. Dante doesn't believe that he will ever be good enough to be lucky to have a mate of his own. He lives to fight and to kill the enemy. Dante's gift is having visions of a future of death and fire...a death he knows will be his and soon. The same happened to his parents, and he knows he inherited his gift from them. Dante is on a mission, to find out the source of Crimson and destroy it. A dangerous drug that turns a breed into a rogue fast...faster than he has ever seen. Their enemy is at work against them once more. Dante is quite the hero in the story. I really loved his fighting spirit and how far he is willing to go to protect the innocent. I really admired Dante because of the way he wins over Tess.
“You would quit the Order for her? Niko asked, the youngest only behind Dante, and a warrior who relished his duty perhaps even more than Dante had himself.

I would quit breathing for her, if she asked it of me.”

It's not a instant love, it's more he takes his time for her, trying to gain her trust not only for information but also because he is connected to her in an emotional and physical way.
The Heroine
Tess Culver works as a Veterinarian. She connects with animals and they trust her instantly. Tess grew up in a home of a dysfunctional family, where drinking and abuse were apparent. One night haunts her, the night she used her gift, a gift she views as a curse. She left home and built a new life for herself. But to this day, it still haunts her, so she focuses all of her attention on those animals that need her help that come from abusive situations.
“You don’t think I’m . . . some kind of monster? That I’m not much better than him to have killed him like I did, in cold blood?”

“Never.” Dante lifted her chin on the edge of his hand. “I think you’re courageous, Tess. An avenging angel, that’s what I think.”

“I’m a freak.”

“No, Tess, no. He kissed her tenderly. “You’re amazing.”

“I’m a coward. Just like you said, I always ran away. It’s true. I’ve been afraid and running for so long, I’m not sure I can ever stop.”

“Then run to me.” Dante’s eyes were fierce as he held her gaze

When Tess helps a stranger who is shot, she never realized how her life would be changing. What I liked most about this heroine was her drive. She was dedicated but a bit of a loner. Due to her gift, and her past, she struggles with trust. I really admired her strength and courage, and she proves herself in more ways than one. From beginning to end, we see more facets to her character, and with each chapter you begin to like her more and more.
Plot and Story Line
Kiss of Crimson continues off pretty quickly after Kiss Of Midnight. What I found most enjoyable was seeing Dante and Tess come together in the story. Its not a insta love story, which I was pretty glad about. It takes time, and its done slowly and gradually and I felt so at ease with their romance. This story sets off with a mystery and a dangerous situation of a new drug "Crimson" now this stuff is pretty bad ass, it pretty much destroys a Breed within minutes of inhaling the stuff and turns them into a blood crazed rogue, with superior strength moe than the regular breed and it takes a lot to kill them. This aspect of the story was heartwrenching at times. Because these are young Breeds in their late teens or early twenties who are being destroyed by this drug. We have a side plot of a new character Chase and his secret agenda to find his nephew who has been missing for two weeks. We have Elise, a woman his brother was mated to, but a woman he has loved secretly but knows he will never have a chance with. Even though Chase starts off with secret intentions, they are good ones to save his kin and I respect that. It was just the icing on the cake to see Chase win over the warriors here, despite the lies and deceit, he proves himself capable. We some other character Gideon and Savannah, Lucan and Gabrielle, and poor Rio!! Zero trust with women (which for those who have read the first book, know why) and is scarred and still healing from what happened in the previous book. The love story between Dante and Tess is real and vivid in emotion and passion. They fight for the love they have found together and it is quite moving when they finally trust fully in each other.
“Everything makes sense when I’m with you, Tess. My life makes sense, after so many years of running scared in the dark. You are the light, the reason I live. I’m bonded to you deep, woman. For me, there will never be another.”

This book really grabbed my attention, and i stayed up reading because I was so immersed in the story. I love the way Lara Adrian's writing is so compelling and wraps around you like a heated blanket in the dead of winter.
The Cover
I really love the blue and red contrast here...with the red splashes of the city and the blue of the couple. Has an edge and passionate feel to it.
Overall View
Kiss of Crimson is a tantalizing read that sinks its hooks into the reader from the first page. A stimulating page turner that is packed with sizzling passion, edgy suspense, and a mystery to unravel!! THRILLING TO THE END!

This is the second in the Midnight Breed series and this time it focuses on Dante, a dark and intense warrior that you meet in the first book and Dr Tess Culver, a vet, they meet accidently (or maybe in a twist of fate) when Dante stumbles into her clinic injured after being attacked by a strange Rogue, he is in need of blood and doesn’t see her Breedmate mark until too late.

I thought this book was an improvement on the first in the series, found the story more engaging and also the characters more likable. However, although I definitely enjoyed this book more than the first, I thought that Tess and Dante were pretty flat characters, and the love story pretty unbelievable, I think you can count on one hand the amount of times that actually met before them declaring their undying love for one another, and although I read, and like a lot of fated mates books, for some reason I just didn’t buy it, I almost felt like I was missing a vital scene between them or something.

However what I did enjoy about this book was Agent Sterling Chase, a detective from the Darkhaven community who comes to the Breed warriors as a lot of youths are disappearing. His character was interesting and seemed far more complex then the two main characters and I look forward to seeing what Ms. Adrian does with him. I also liked seeing some of the other Breed warriors, especially Rio, as you see the consequences of him Breedmate’s actions. However, the relationships between the warriors still seem to lack the camaraderie that I would have expected and although their interactions are shown a bit more it seemed forced.

I also enjoyed the continuation of the war between the Breed and the Rogues and how it seems to have stepped up a gear. I like the fact that the adversary in this series is themselves or those that they love and that anyone could turn just by taking a sip too much blood, I think it adds tension to the books.

This book was definitely an improvement and although I wasn’t too impressed by the main storyline I did enjoy the new characters introduced and the continued development of the world the Ms Adrian has created. I am going to read on and hope that the next couple will hold my interest more, although I believe the next couple is Elise and Tegan, and I confess to finding Elise slightly irritating in this book, so fingers crossed that she will improve.

SECOND REVIEW: 08/09/2021
I enjoyed the third time through this book by listening to the audiobook, narrated by Hillary Huber. I must say some of the scenes were scorching hot. There is definitely a difference between reading sex scenes as opposed to listening to the sex scenes, at least for me. I also found the battle scenes more intense. This is one of my all-time favorite novels. I've already checked out the next audiobook, Midnight Awakening, in the series.

FIRST REVIEW: 04/26/2021
Dante and Tess's story is one of trust and love. They both have to trust each other completely with their past and present secrets before they can truly love each other. It all begins when Dante is severely injured and breaks into the store room of a veterinarian clinic. Tess, the veterinarian, sees the wounded man and offers her assistance after he tells her he can't go to the hospital. Dante pulls Tess into his embrace and drinks from her. Tess sinks a tranquilizer shot into his thigh, knocking Dante out. She thinks the man is knocked out for a while until she turns around and comes face to face with him again. Tess dashes to the phone and calls her ex-boyfriend, but the phone goes dead after a short conversation. Dante tells her they need to talk, but with the sun coming up soon and the sirens approaching, he has no choice but to wipe Tess's memory clean and get the heck out of there.

This is my second time reading this novel and it is just as great as the first time I read it. The world building in this Paranormal Romance is very well constructed. The vampires and Rogues all feel real. The protagonists, though reluctant at first, grow and change, thus increasing character depth and maturity. The subplots are woven into the plot seamlessly, leaving no room for doubt as to the outcome. The descriptions are evenly applied to the setting and scenes, but a few times, the scenes were gory. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I wish I could give this 2nd Breed book 25 stars!!! I loved the fact that the series continued but with another member of the Breed, unexpected and refreshing. Dante is the star of this book with Tess his Breedmate, what a storyline, what a book...

Thoroughly enjoyed it and I honestly recommend it... along with the first one of course... brilliant... can't wait to read the rest.

...Yeah...emmmm...I skipped Kiss of Midnight and read this one first...and the reason is only because I...ah...like Dante's name!!! (There, I admitted it >_<)

But I absolutely adore him. Dante's love for Tess is so strong and I love the whole "little beast Harvard" thing >_<

Well, there is this one little tiny part that I don't like about Tess though...(Though I understand that there will be times when the heroine will act...annoyingly...annoying =_=')...Okay, here goes (please cover your ears): WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU WOMAN?!!!! YOU JUST GOT ATTACKED AND "THE MAN" SAVED YOU!!! AND WHEN HE EXPLAIN WHO HE IS AND THE DANGER YOU'RE IN, YOU HAD TO RUN AWAY...COME ON!!!

Whew...Now that I let that out...I still love you Tess...^_,^...

I am reading this series again...and enjoying it as much as the first time.

The 2nd book in the Midnight Breed Series and we get Dante's story.

I really like the world that the author has built..the idea of a race that arrived in this planet thousands of years ago and becoming vampires.

Dante & Tess are likeable characters and I enjoyed reading their story.

Also looking forward to the stories of the characters that have been introduced.

So here's the deal. I'm going to read the next book but I'm having an issue with these love interests. They're falling in love too fast with no real substance to prove it. It's just like all of a sudden they think "oh my god! I'm in lurve!" I'm going to see how Tegan handles this situation with Elise because I am a complete sucker.
