I’m a night owl and start writing when everyone else in my time zone is asleep. I’ve loved reading all my life and spent most of my childhood with my nose buried in a book. Although I always wanted to be a writer, financial independence came first. Twenty-some years and a successful business career later I took some online writing classes and never looked back.

Living and working in eight countries has taught me that there is more than one way to get things done. It has instilled tremendous respect for the many different cultures, beliefs, attitudes, and preferences that exist on our planet.

I like exploring those differences in my stories, most of which happen to be romances. My characters have a tendency to want to do their own thing, so I often have to rein them back in. The one thing we all agree on is the desire for a happy ending.

I currently live in Canada, sharing my house with a vast collection of books. I like reading, traveling, spending time with my nieces and listening to classical music. I have a passion for science and learning new languages.

This is one for my sweet tooth.
Ryan was kicked out at 18 for telling his parents he was gay, he left an has been barely making it the last four years.
When he sees that his twins sister is marrying his best friend he goes back to home and is found outside the church by Daniel, the best friends older brother and the guy Ryan had and has been crushing on forever.
Daniel is now wealthy and it's totally a Cinderfella- love -forever -all will be well - everyone is happy except the evil parents kind of story.
It's short, sweet and sappy, with lots of love yous and such, but I'm off to read the sequel!

I really adored this very sweet story of a man coming home again and finding all his dreams can come true. I truly felt for Ryan as no one should have to go through what he did in the four years after his parents threw him out. The fact that he got up the courage to return for his sister's wedding told me so much about the kind of man he was. This was the first Serena Yates book I read but I don't think it will be the last.

When Ryan got up his courage to tell his parents he was gay, they told him it was a sin and he would burn in hell for it. They threw him out and threatened his friends if he tried to get help from anyone. Ryan lived on the streets, he headed to Canada and has just barely made ends meet trying to stay away. He discovers his twin sister, Nicole, is marrying his best friend, Peter, and even though Ryan is terrified they hate him and want nothing to do with him, he has to see his sister on her wedding day.

Daniel, Peter's older brother, can't believe his eyes when he finds Ryan on a park bench the night before the wedding. He looked so hard for Ryan when he disappeared, not believing his parents who said he ran away. Daniel, Peter and Ryan were always inseparable, regardless of the five year age difference, but the last few years before Ryan left, Daniel started to feel more. Can he convince Ryan to stay and make a life with him, because Daniel isn't going to lose him again.

This is a fairly short story but well worth the read. It is sweet with just the right amount of angst and the two main characters are very lovable men. Now I'm looking for more!

“To Find and To Keep” is not a deep, realistic plunge into gay erotica. It's more like a fairy tale--sweet, sappy, improbable and delightful and there's even a happily ever after ending. Take the Cinderella story. She and Ryan had a lot in common. They were both sad, lonely, forsaken young people. They were treated badly by those who should have supported them. Both go through trials and tribulations and are eventually restored to their rightful place with someone who loves and appreciates them for who they are. Far fetched? Maybe...but the thing is, this story has a message--Being yourself, regardless of what others think is the only way to achieve happiness. If you want to read a story that is hard core sex, this isn't the book for you. However, if you want to read an uncomplicated, uplifting, entertaining story with a positive message, it may well be something you will appreciate. Thanks Serena!

I found this book stretched reality a little too far. After being kicked out of his home and disappearing for four years, the MC returns to witness his sister's marriage, basically homeless, his high school crush comes across him, takes him home, cleans him up, feeds him, buys him clothes, takes him to the wedding, proposes to him on the way home and discloses that in the past four years he has gone to culinary school and opened three successful restaurants, so hey, no need to worry about pesky money, or working, we can just hang out and be together all the time. All in the space of 24 hours.
Everything, including the dialog was just too pat.

I read this story a while ago and reread it again recently. I found it incredibly endearing. The characters were warm and likable. As I read the story I could feel the pain and heartbreak that went along with the family's rejection. I understand Ms. Yates has another story about these characters in the works. I'm ready for it... soon.

To Find and To Keep is a small little book that tells Ryan’s first heartbreaking, and then everything-will-be-okay story. He has been expelled from home and hometown by his parents for being gay and when a few years later he learns his sister is getting married he’s determined to go back home just to see her in that special day. At his arrival the first person he encounters is Daniel, his old crush, who the reader gets to know immediately had feelings for Ryan as well, and who takes him to his home because 1- now that he found him, he wants to keep him, and 2- because Ryan has no other place to stay anyway. After this, the story revolves around old friends welcoming Ryan back, his sister's marriage, his awful parents being awful, and Ryan and Daniel’s relationship.

This was a quick read that alerted me for the shockingly sad reality of parents who aren’t able to love their children as they should - unconditionally, which leads me to believe that there is something utterly and undeniably wrong with people such as. In Ryan’s case, his parents’ hatred for him due to his sexual orientation made him think everyone else he knew and cared about felt the same way, thus leading him to isolation, poverty, and homelessness. True, he is a rather passive character, but I cannot be so gullible in not believing such things do happen even with the most rebellious minds. Unfortunately.

There is another much less serious side to this story – the erotic part. Along the book the sexual tension between Ryan and Daniel is a constant, and they do end up sharing a few steamy and graphic scenes towards the end - you’ve been warned! (:p)

We open with Ryan in a homeless shelter and then on a park bench outside the church where his twin sister is getting married the next day to his best friend. We find through out the story that Ryan had left home abruptly 4 years ago after his complete gay bashing controlling Ass of parents kicked him out, threatened him etc. The story progresses quickly (all pretty much happening in a 24 hour period). Daniel, Ryan's long lost love finds him, cleans him up, makes Ryan feel safe and takes him to the wedding. We find that Daniel has loved Ryan since they were much younger and has kept his love over the last 4 years Ryan has been missing. Ryan's sister, Peter his best friend and Daniel and Ryan's parents are over the moon at having him back. The question is can they get him to stay? I cannot imagine being so alone, threatened and basically thrown away by parents - enough to feel like you have nothing the way Ryan did.

Now normally I would say whoa...what...way to fast. But I have read other stories that had long lost loves come together when 10 years have passed. What you will find is that you WANT all of this for Ryan. You want him to be in love and taken care of. You want his HEA.

With that said, there is a sequel called To Keep and to Love. Where this book is fairly short, the sequel is much more the complete story. I highly recommend reading the second book in the series right away to continue the evolution of Ryan and Daniel's relationship.

Completely unrealistic storyline and dialogue. Reads like it was written by a 15 year old fangirl. Also, don't be fooled by the "85 page" length - the type and spacing are humongous.

Now, with that said, I'll also say that the sequel to this book, To Keep and to Love, is about 10 times longer and 10 times better written in comparison. (I actually accidentally read the sequel first.) So if you want to give this author a try, I'd recommend skipping this one and trying something that she's written more recently instead.

This is a very touching story about Ryan, who was kicked out of his home when he was 18 when he came out to his parents. Now four years later, he's back in town to secretly watch his sister get married to his best friend.

This is one of those stories that makes you wonder why you waited so long to read it. I loved Ryan's courage and cautious hope. His shyness and blushing was absolutely adorable. Now to go off and find the sequel!

I enjoyed this one. It spoke to the incurable romantic in me. I like the thought that some people have a one and only out there waiting for them. I snapped up the sequel with fiendish excitement.

I was attracted to this book by the cover – it looks different, it has this fairy tale look to it and as compared to the masses of covers with nekkid men this was a looker. I was also hoping for something different as well.

I got difference in the fact that the book feels like it’s the entire middle section of a longer book – so there was no beginning to know why Ryan was in the situation he was in, and rather than the obvious – the reason he came back – there wasn’t anything more to the book.

In spite of that or because of that I was fascinated by the characters - Ryan is frail mentally and physically and while I like my guys on the smaller side, Ryan was just so broken it was hard to like him. Daniel was the opposite, take charge optimistic and I would like to think that this was or is the perfect combination – but yet again the book closes before I got the chance to..

Ms. Yates takes the time with this book to delve into some of the heartbreak that Ryan experiences as well as how he tries to survive the time without his family or a friend- those scenes are rather touching..

But--- yes but - Ms. Yates either has a great promo plan with how these books are released because before I could think “what is this” a lengthier book is due for release – and I am intrigued. Ms Yates has left so main issues, problems and possibility in the air that leave me looking forward to the next book’s release…

TO FIND AND TO KEEP is a sweet read with some rather tender smut scene…. And a must read as I am intending to follow up Ryan’s and Daniel’s journey…

At 85 pages this is a short story, but it packs a lot into these pages; I enjoyed it very much. It's sweet, tender, and left me with an awesome gooshy feeling... like I just wanted to pick Ryan and Daniel up and hug 'em to death. Well, you know what I mean... I hope.
I love how they found each other again and how, this time, they were able to move past being just friends and show how they felt about each other.
Ryan, oh my heart was breaking for him at the beginning; not knowing if we was going to be able to reconnect with his twin or be there to see her begin her new life with the man she loves. But it worked out beautifully. Very much one of those feel-good stories, Serena Yates' To Find and to Keep is just such a one; and don't we all need some of these in our lives?

I really loved the characters. The author was able to picture a very detailed world and my heart was breaking for Ryan.
I would have enjoyed the story much more though, if the story would have developed a little slower. It always seems a little unreasonable to me, when everything comes too easy to everybody. I would have also liked to have found out what happened to Ryan in the last 4 years or how his life was, before he was chased from home. How his friendship with Daniel developed. There were so many references to his art and his "sensible & artsy" personality, and yet none of that was actually shown within the story.
Overall I enjoyed it, and it did leave me happy to see Ryan happy at the end, but the journey could have been more detailed.

Interesting idea for the character Ryan. I definitely liked that, plus his sister and Peter.

I do think the relationship between Daniel and Ryan was a bit over-the-top. It was like trying to fit a longer relationship into just two days, especially with the use of endearments escalating like that.

I definitely recommend this to people looking for a fluffy short story (with a smidge of angst/plot) to read to cheer them up. =)

It was a fun, quick little read.

The only problem I had with it was that I kept underestemating the age of Ryan. He didn't act his age at all, rather more like a 16 year old.

Still liked it.

Ryan has been living on his own and barely getting by for four years. After his parents disowned him and kicked him out when he came out to them about being gay, Ryan moved all the way to Canada. He was determined to stay out of the lives of his twin sister Nicole, best friend Peter and Peter's brother Daniel so that his parents wouldn't make their lives difficult. Over the years he has kept up with his sister and friends as much as possible via the internet, and when he sees that Nicole and Peter are to be married he knows he needs to make a trip home. Ryan spends all the money he has on a bus ticket to Grand Rapids, determined to remain hidden but see with his own eyes that Nicole is happy. Ryan hopes that once he sees that they are happy he can move on with his life, but things don't go quite as planned when Daniel finds him the night before the wedding.

This is a nice tale about reconnecting with friends and family and finding love where you always hoped it would be. Ryan is a sweet kid, and it is heartbreaking what he has had to go through because of parents whose love was unfortunately conditional. He has been in love with Daniel for years, and so it is quite fitting that Daniel is the one to rescue him very early in the story. Most of the story is focused on Ryan reconnecting with Daniel, as well as his sister Nicole and best friend Peter. When he is accepted with open arms and love he is shocked and pleased, and it makes the treatment from his parents that much more harsh. It is easy to guess from the very beginning where this story is going, and there isn't much struggle. It could be argued that some of the points in the story are a bit too easy, such as Daniel just happening to be out the night before the wedding and finding Ryan. The nice thing about fiction however is that if you can suspend disbelief a bit you can enjoy a story that is on this side of easy. I enjoyed reading this story, and watching Ryan reconnect with those he loves and slowly come out of his shell to allow himself to be loved was satisfying. There are obviously intense feelings of passion between the men, but the story stays quite chaste which I felt was very appropriate. I enjoyed reading this story and spending time with these characters.

This book had a great plot and a LOT of potential, but I dont think it reached that. The story was very short, therefore it is possible that the author didnt get to expand on the details. But, I mean really? Ryan was homeless for four years and he is still very trusting and just goes with Daniel. If he trusted Daniel so much why didnt he go to Daniel when he was first kicked out? Also, yeah they both had a crush on each other but to propose after a day?!!!!!! WHAT?!!! Daniel has no idea what Ryan went through during his years on the street, and for that matter, neither do we! Shouldnt EVERYONE have been a little more horrified and sympathetic about Ryan being homeless? (Along with Ryan) Not that want him to be scared from the experience, but I think Ryan should have been a little more affected by his life for the last four years. The people at the wedding had no reaction to Ryan's presence. I mean he was "MISSING" for FOUR years! I think that should have resulted in total uproar.
The reaction from the family to his arrival was quite lukewarm (even from Nicole and Peter) So the parents totally hate Ryan now, but that still doesnt explain how they were planning on hurting Ryan. They didnt even beat him up. (Again, I am glad they didnt, but I want to know why Ryan was so afraid that he ran)
Anyway, having said all that, I loved the book when I was successful in ignoring the problems. And I am about to read the next one in the series. It's longer, so I hope it explains everything.

EDIT after reading To Keep and to Love (book 2):

NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!!!! FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, I want to run Ryan’s parents down with a really big truck. And now that that’s done, I can say I loved this sweet story. Everyone needs a fluffy (and I say that in a good way), heart-felt, sort-of-modern-day-fairy-tale to read once and a while and to be honest I’m a pretty big sap at heart - for example, when Daniel took Ryan’s hand, my heart did a little flip.

Ryan is such a broken character, so insecure and loving, and I really loved the quiet familiarity he and Daniel were able to find as soon as they met up again - even in the car on the way to Daniel’s house. The tiny nibbles of uncertainty on both their parts made me smile, too.

The reunion with Nicole was sweet. I especially loved when she asked is Ryan ran away because he loved Daniel - poor Ryan. My heart definitely hitched when he got to be one of the best men, and when Daniel took his hand going down the aisle - so sweet. And then total “Ahhhh” moments with the proposal and discovery that neither had “gone all the way”. Even the sex scene was hot but sweet at the same time.

I think my only critique, if it’s okay to do so, was that sometimes I found the dialogue to be a little stiff but that could just be a personal preference thing. All in all, I recommend this delightful, HEA story and am looking forward to reading the sequel.
