Four years after the portals first appeared, people have adapted. Chaotic and irregular, the portals transport anything touching them between worlds — often stranding people on the other side.
Now a wounded verdiran — from the only known sentient non-human species — arrives at Nessa’s veterinary practice. Intrigued by his questions, Nessa patches him up and gives him a place to stay.
But this verdiran may hold the key to understanding the increasingly unpredictable portals threatening her town.

This is not my type of reading material. I like my cozy mysteries. I like snappy but interesting and intelligent dialogue. I like characters with brains and kindness. Throw in some laughter and I'm happy. Though I am a Star Trek fan and have watched since the first episode that played on my family's 19 inch black and white TV set so many years ago, I was never a reader of science fiction. I only started reading this series because I loved the author's cozy mysteries and I'd already read them all. I figured 'what the hay' - I loved her writing. And I loved this book. I love the dialogue between Vanessa and Christopher. I love that the female character, Nessie, is so strong, smart and independent. And, in Christopher, she finds a man who is so strong that he appreciates her for exactly who she is. He admires her and even seems to look up to her at times. When they are together, the are equal and they are partners. They even tackle the problem of what happens when you're trying to communicate with someone who doesn't speak or understand your language but you really, really want to understand them; Fred is a brilliant addition to the story. The descriptions of the animals that Vanessa treats in her clinic are strange and wondrous. Vanessa has had a lot of experience treating animals that are not exactly from this planet. The way the author describes them, you'd think that she's had experience with them herself because they are so detailed and you know she's describing an animal that doesn't exist. Also interesting is that there's a lot of greed going on (go figure) with life altering examples of what happens when people with too much money believe that money equals intelligence. And they surround themselves with people willing to uphold that illusion. I really can't explain just how much I enjoyed reading this book. I do know that I will continue reading this series whenever a new book comes along. I believe this author also has another series and I'm going to go see if I can find it right now because I'm in the mood to read some more T.M. Baumgartner.
With portals popping up constantly, Nessa is kept busy with non-native animals in her veterinary practice, but then a verdiran (the only known sentient species that have come out of the portals) is brought to her clinic because the human hospital wouldn’t accept him. Nessa patches him up, names him Fred, and works on communicating with him, with the help of Christopher. Then they discover an unscrupulous company is experimenting and causing more instability with the portals, which leads to trying to do the right thing, quite a lot of danger, and making a new friend. I love this world, with lots of interesting animals and such great characters. I’m really enjoying watching them getting to know each other and working together. I’m off to read the next book in the series and hope there will be more soon.
I'm a veterinarian and rarely read books with MCs in my profession....but I love the Portal Storms series (not as much as Jackpot Drift, but still love). The veterinarian parts are well-written and too accurate, the adventure parts are thrilling, and Nessa is working through her issues in a believable way. Best of all, the creatures are awesome. This series is darker than Jackpot, but there is still some appropriate humor. I'm glad I decided to buy this book.
The villain is a bit of a caricature, but the main characters are fun, and the conflict is realistic. The dialog works and the two main characters work well together, while playing to each others' strengths. The addition of Fred was awesome. I love Fred. Again, I'm not quite sure whether I should call this one fantasy or sci-fi, but it's a whole lot of fun and I've already bought the next installment!
Very cute *but* apparently there is a prequel novella I wasn't aware of which might have helped explain a few things better.. . I liked the veterinary aspect of dealing with alien life forms etc incorporated through the story and the relationship forming with Fred.
