‘I just want my little girl back. She’s so little, she needs her mummy. And she doesn’t even have her panda bear with her. Find her, please find her, before it’s too late.’

Little Rosie Blake has been taken. Since going missing from the hospital where she was being treated for cancer, Rosie’s distraught parents haven’t heard a word. And time is swiftly running out. They have to find her, and right away, because Rosie can only survive for ten days without her medication.

With the police unable to find any leads at all, criminal behaviourist Jessie Boyle and her team are brought in to help. Who would be so evil as to steal a sick child? Narrowing down on a suspect, Jessie quickly moves to arrest them, only to discover the suspect’s dead body instead... And with no Rosie in sight, the case becomes even more desperate.

Who killed their chief suspect, and where is Rosie now? And is Rosie’s disappearance linked to the sudden revival of Dublin’s Hellfire Club, an ancient and terrifying cult obsessed with death and human sacrifice?

As the race to find Rosie intensifies, her heartbroken parents know their little girl’s time is running out. The clock is ticking, but Jessie clings on to the hope of finding her safe. Then her search leads her to Ireland’s remote mountains... Will Jessie be able to survive the deadly threat that awaits her, rescue Rosie, and get her back to safety, before it’s too late?

An utterly compelling crime thriller that will have you hooked from the very first line. Fans of Patricia Gibney, Lisa Gardner and Lisa Regan will not want to miss this.

Her Child’s Cry by S.A. Dunphy
(Boyle & Keneally #3)

Team Boyle, Keneally, and Kehoe are at it again, with a healthy dose of Ireland's Garda Commissioner Wilson adding her usual superhero moves to the mix. I think of this series as it's own little world because you do have to take things with a grain of salt. The team seems to think nothing of one of them running into danger alone (the others will actually gripe about it when it happens even though they have done it themselves) and then the others are able to whip out amazing rescues of one kind or another.

In this story a little girl, who has cancer and is only still alive because of her chemo treatments, has been kidnapped. Her wealthy parents don't seem to be too interested in helping investigators get their little girl back. The girl has ten days to live at the most, without her chemo treatments, and that's if whoever took her doesn't kill her first.

It looks like a cult could be involved, one that requires human sacrifices. This series has always had a supernatural, cultish air about it. Once again Uruz, Boyle's nemesis from a past that won't go away, seems to have his bloody fingers in this violent kidnapping crime, maybe? But the investigators will not give up, they are determined to save the little girl, no matter the dangers that they face. As usual, Uruz seems to be ever present and dangerous.

This is the third in SA Dunphy's wonderful Irish crime series, featuring 45 year old criminal behaviourist Jessie Boyle and DS Seamus Kenneally, part of a special police unit set up by their increasingly hands on boss, Police Commissioner Dawn Wilson, and which includes their tech genius, Terry Kehoe. They are to find themselves with their most pressurising case yet when young 9 year old cancer patient, Arizona Rose Blake, known as Rosie, is taken from her private room at Dublin's Beaumont Hospital. They have no leads, although her abductor, porter Richard Roche, is identified when they find his dead body at the Mount Pelier, close to the notorious and sinister Hellfire Club, shot 3 times. Rosie's wealthy parents, Peter, who works as a stockbroker at Precision Investment Brokers, and Shauna, are visibly upset, but why are they so reluctant to be as helpful as they could be?

There are various threads to this dark and intense fast paced mystery that includes the incorporation of Ireland's history of the the supernatural with the pagan occultists known as the Reavers with their notions of seeking metaphysical change that involves sacrifice, there are crude human shaped figures made of sticks and twigs left at the scene of gruesome killings, and Rosie's description of a bald man with his large dog turns out to be more than a mere feverish dream. We learn more about Dawn's intriguing past as an undercover police officer as she seeks answers from crime boss, Garth Calhoun, a man who has brought in the ambitious Eugene Dunlin into his gang. Joining the investigation is US intelligence officer, Donal Glynn, serial killer Uruz insists on keeping in touch with Jessie, providing what appears to be helpful information and Terry finds herself sent out in the field on a dangerous assignment to Tory Island.

As the body count rises, the pressures on the police intensify, particularly as Rosie can only survive for so long without her essential cancer treatment and medication. This is a terrific addition to this tense and captivating Irish series, I love the characters of Jessie, willing to do whatever it takes to protect Rosie, Seamus with his attempts to pass himself off as street and urban, Dawn who thinks nothing of placing herself in the midst of a ferocious battle and Terry, who keeps her wits together in the face of great danger. A great crime read. Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.

Jessie Boyle (Criminal Behaviourist) and DS Seamus Keneally #3

Is mise an stoirm = I am the storm. Who is at the centre of this particular storm? This maybe the most challenging case to date in this outstanding series. I don't want to give too much away so I'll sum the complex plot up by describing it as a power play involving an OCG, the security services are lurking in the background or forefront, mixed up with perverted desires, tied in with a disturbing cult and with oodles of supernatural overtones. As always the mysterious Uruz is communicating with Jessie but this time he seems to be veering towards the helpful. The whole storm starts when a sweet and very poorly 9 year old girl is abducted form her private hospital room mid cancer treatment. No one even hears her cry out. Her parents, financier Peter Blake and his wife Shauna have odd reactions raising your suspicion antenna from the start. So brace yourselves as you're in for a bumpy ride.

Right from the beginning your heart is in your mouth, I mean what heartless creature would kidnap such a helpless poorly child??? Jessie, Seamus and their fab boss Dawn Wilson have their work cut out and there are strange, uncomfortable vibes almost immediately. The plot takes a deep dive into the mystical and devilish which ranges from the oddly weird to deeply shocking. As ever the author selects locations to add to the already highly suspenseful atmosphere so that at times it's hard to breathe. It's chilling.jaw dropping, spine tingling and hair raising on many an occasion - so you can imagine the mess I look while reading this! I'm not going to pretend it's an easy plot to follow as its a complicated interconnected web but it's cleverly thought out immersive reading. The author thankfully gives you some moments of respite and injections of welcome humour before we're off again as it ramps up several notches to hold your breath levels. On several occasions I gasp mostly at things you don't see coming ( though one I do), at times it's emotional, it's dramatic and leaves you pondering what horrors will happen next? As for Uruz - are you the demon master manipulator or a force for good? The jury is out ... can't wait for number 4!

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Bookouture for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

This is the third Boyle and Keneally book and it’s another cracker! Nine year old Arizona Rose Blake (Rosie) is undergoing essential treatment in a private hospital for her cancer when she is kidnapped from the ward right under everyone’s nose. This is definitely a case for the special crime unit reporting directly to Garda Commissioner Dawn Wilson and comprising criminal behaviourist Dr Jessie Boyle, Detective Sergeant Seamus Keneally and technical wizard Terry Kehoe. Who would kidnap such a sick child?

The parents are summoned but seem somehow not as distraught as you would expect. Nevertheless it is not long before they find the kidnapper - shot dead at what is referred to as the Hellfire Club, a derelict building on the top of Montpelier. The spot has a dark history though. There is no sign of Rosie however, just her sadly discarded panda. The kidnapper was a hospital orderly called Richard Roche and everyone questioned about him had only good things to say. So why did he take Rosie?

Meanwhile Terry’s research unearths many references to the Reavers, a strange satanic cult that hasn’t ever quite disappeared. There are also possible links to a Dublin crime family. The police feel the urgency as Rosie cannot go much longer without her cancer treatment. They have, however, formed an opinion that Rosie was not close to her parents and that Roche had concerns for her safety, prompting him to take her from the hospital.

The plot thickens as more bodies turn up and, not unexpectedly, Jessie’s nemesis, Uruz, makes contact again. This time though it almost seems that Uruz is being helpful - cryptic but somewhat helpful. The team faces many challenges and dangers and when the villains of the piece are finally revealed it’s a bit of a shock!

The police team work so well together and Commissioner Wilson is refreshingly hands on and direct. She is not afraid to get into the thick of things. The pace was fast and furious as we have come to expect but I did think the ending may have been just a little too much this time. Still, I can’t wait for the next instalment. The slightly supernatural elements in each story really add something unique. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

4.5 rounded down.

Another brilliant addition to the series. When I finished reading, Lost Graves, I said in my review, that I could not wait for the next book in the series to come out. The dynamic trio of Boyle, Keneally, and Kehoe are back -woohoo!!!! This series is excellent!

In this book, Rosie Blake, a child with cancer was taken from her hospital room. She depends upon her cancer treatments/Chemo and doctors to keep her alive. Her parent's although distraught, are often a little off. They are worried and yet they are giving off a vibe. Dad doesn't want his computers looked at, has an attitude, is demanding yet not too cooperative.

This book also has a vibe of the supernatural kind. Which I dig! Throw in some cult with human sacrifice vibes, some grabs for power and you have yourself a winner! Oh wait! There is more, fans of this series know Uruz is back! Those who have not read the previous two books in this series, get reading. Seriously, I said it before and I will say it again, this is an excellent series.

I love the team and their banter. I love the tension and how it flows throughout this book. A little girl with cancer, in need of her medications immediately grabbed my attention and my heart. Without her treatment she doesn't have much time. Heart beating, emotions on high and fear for a child's well being kept me grabbing my kindle. The settings in this book also set the stage and create atmosphere while intensifying the spooky vibe in this book.

Hold onto your hats as this book has a lot going on, but things come together in a brilliant fashion.
Book #4, I hope you come out soon!

Well written, well thought out, evoking emotion and tense! Highly recommend!

“Find her, please find her, before it’s too late.”

..

Having read the first book in this series, book #2 seems to have somehow slipped through the net, so there I was with book #3, hoping that I hadn’t missed out on any vital backstory in my absence. However, I need not have worried, as author Shane Dunphy filled in any gaps succinctly, without either causing a non-series reader to feel they have missed out on something vital, or a confirmed follower of Jessie Boyle to worry about too much repetition.

However, that’s where all the ‘feel-good’ factor stopped, because from there on out the adrenalin flow went off the scale, I could feel the tension oozing from the pages, and for a person who is not really animal friendly, the fear factor reached melting point at times.

I also established that each of the books in the Boyle and Keneally series, prominently feature elements of Irish myth, folk legend and supernatural horror, woven into the narrative alongside the more conventional elements of traditional crime fiction, so nothing is ever quite as it seems.

Everything begins when…

..

Young cancer patient, Arizona Rose (Rosie) Blake, is taken from her hospital bed and whilst the identity of the abductor is soon discovered, his motives take much longer to establish, by which time events have moved on apace and he has unwittingly placed Rosie in a life or death situation, from which he is no longer able to keep her safe. To criminal behaviourist, Jessie Boyle and her small team, Rosie’s wealthy parents seem surprisingly calm and detached from events. However, by the time the reason for their strange behaviour is established, one of them can be of no further assistance to police enquiries and the other will be facing the full force of Jessie’s wrath.

A straightforward kidnap and ransom demand this definitely isn’t, as Jessie, Seamus, Dawn and Terri soon discover. For Jessie, her nemesis from the very first occasion I met her and the reason she left the English mainland to return to her Irish homeland, is still taunting and teasing her, although on this occasion, he is surprisingly helpful in guiding her path through the maze of deception, but only because he isn’t done with her yet! As leader of this small unit, Dawn once enjoyed a surprisingly intimate relationship with the least likely of soul mates, a suspect in the case, who is still willing to offer her a few crumbs of information for old times sake. Workaholic, Seamus thinks he might have found his own slice of happiness, although when you are in his line of work, true love never seems to run smoothly. For behind the scenes researcher, Terri, being asked to leave the safety blanket of her office and desk, makes her feel valued, especially when not only is a child’s life at stake, but the team desperately needs another pair of boots on the ground – After this experience though, I think her computer skills might be all the comfort she craves.

The race to find Rosie is numbered in hours rather than days, so when the action moves to a remote Irish island location, the weather closes in and all the local residents seem to be conspiring against you, it pays to keep looking over your shoulder and have good friends to depend on, who will never knowingly let you down! Never mind the animal phobia, I also needed to put my claustrophobia to one side now, and that’s easier said than done!

A rogue operator who is trying to make his name in local gangland activities, sets everything spiralling downwards, making this life or death investigation much more difficult to get a handle on. Myths and legends centuries old, rear their ugly heads once more and a violent sect, for whom suffering, death and sacrifice is second nature and all part of a pre-ordained plan, is resurrected by local aristocracy. An outside member of Dawn’s team is uncovered as someone not to be trusted – And when is a kidnap, not a kidnap?

..

This fast-paced, multi-faceted, sinister and complex storyline, was thoughtfully broken down into several bite-sized chapters, some of which were narrated by specific characters. The many threads of the story wove themselves together beautifully into a final crescendo which I never saw coming, although as there were so many twists and turns along the way, that was hardly a surprise! Whilst the diverse elements and acts of pagan and occult savagery, which verge on terrorism rather than religious zealotry, take centre stage in the plot, they are carefully crafted to sit in harmony, work with, and never to overshadow, the crime solving outcomes of the case.

This book is an excellent choice, if like myself, you are a confirmed ‘armchair traveller’. So many of the locations mentioned in the storyline are real places, which I could check out for myself, although Shane more than adequately catalogues his own ‘potted’ guide in the “Acknowledgements and some comments from the author” section at the end of the book, which I actually read first, so that I could immerse myself in the in the amazing Irish setting and hit the ground running. The remote island where Terri finds herself captive, and the bothy hidden in the folds of the mountains where Jessie and her fellow officers believe they have made their final stand, are scenes all set with great attention to detail and descriptive qualities which paint a vivid picture, acting as a good foil for the city landscape and the mundane machinery of the authorities.

Shane has created and developed a strong, authentic and addictive core cast of characters, who each have their own strengths and weaknesses, whose individual skills complement one another, who work well as a team and have some excellent synergy and dynamics between them. As with all investigative teams, their personal lives seem to be a cause of constant stress and angst, so whilst Seamus is still trying to balance his professional and personal life and failing dismally with the latter, the three ladies, who are of slightly more mature years, have decided to concentrate on their careers first and foremost. Which camp is the happier with the current situation, is yet to be established conclusively.

Rosie is actually a very astute child, although through the necessity to protect herself, when those around her can’t or won’t, has become quite withdrawn and uncommunicative. However, she finds her own way in which to express herself and release some of the pent up tension and emotion, which fills her young life, and it is this which in no small way, helps Jessie and the team to figure out what is going on in her head and indeed what fate might have befallen her.

This storyline was ably supported by a large touring support team of nefarious complex characters, who only added to the tension and upped the anti, throughout. Dour, disturbed, manipulative and dangerous, didn’t even begin to describe this duplicitous gathering of humanity. Their malevolence knew no bounds, making them totally untrustworthy, unlikeable and impossible to connect with – Just, I suspect, as the author had intended.

What always makes reading such a wonderful experience for me, is that with each and every new book I read, I am taken on a unique and individual journey, by authors who fire my imagination, stir my emotions and stimulate my senses. This story definitely had the power to evoke so many feelings, that I’m sure I won’t have felt the same way about it as the last reader, nor the next. Shane offered me a ticket to hell and back, so thanks for one gut-wrenching journey!

Her Child's Cry, although a little long, was a good story. It kept the reader's attention as well as I found it a little scary in parts.. Jesse Boyle, a criminal behaviorist and detective Seamus Kenneally are partners and the main characters in this story. The other supporting characters are very important to the story. Jesse and Seamus are part of a special police force along with Dawn Wilson, Ireland's Garda commissioner and Terri Kehoe researcher for their task force.

The task force is notified that a child with cancer, Rosie Blake has been taken from Beaumont Hospital. They meet with her parents, Peter and Shauna Blake. Rosie was taken by a hospital aide, Richard Boche who is later found murdered, While leaving the hospital she gets a text message from serial killer Urez who escaped capture for abducting her partner and lover, Will. He warns her of a group called the Reavers

The story takes the reader through betrayal, a secret society, more murders, some romance, disappearances, chases and a man with a dog. There is so much going on in this story that it is hard to put it all on paper. The story builds up with twists and turns that takes the reader to an exciting and unpredictable ending.

Thank you NegGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.

The third in the Boyle and Keneally series and it is getting stronger and stronger.

Again we have a story based loosely around some Irish folklore as a child with cancer goes missing from a hospital ward and only has days to live without her chemo medication.

The writing here again is snappy and the characters are really finding their feet in the series. We have the boss feature a lot more in this one and its a great addition, making up a quartet of a team.

A mixture of folklore and real crime, the author mixes it up nicely and balances it all really well to make this a real page turner. I do wonder how many more can be based around a story of folklore. I think the characters are established enough in their own right to feature in a straight out crime story/thriller without the folklore background.

I really am loving this series, it’s one of the strongest out there at the moment. The storytelling, characterisation and general pacing make these books an absolute pleasure to read. An easy 5 stars for me.

My thanks to Bookouture for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Her Child’s Cry’ by S.A. Dunphy in exchange for an honest review. I have also been invited to take part in the Bookouture blog tour later this month.

This is the third in Dunphy’s series of Irish police procedurals featuring Jessie Boyle, a criminal behavioural specialist, and Detective Seamus Keneally and their work with a task force investigating serious crimes. Both of the earlier novels proved compelling 5 star reads and so I was excited about this new book.

Just brief plot details in order to avoid spoilers. Nine-year-old Arizona Rose (Rosie) Blake has been taken from the hospital where she was being treated for cancer. Rosie’s distraught parents haven’t received a ransom demand and she needs medication to survive. With no leads Jessie Boyle and her team are brought in to help.

When links are found between Rosie’s disappearance and the recent revival of Dublin’s Hellfire Club, an ancient and terrifying cult obsessed with death and sacrifice, the case takes a sinister turn.

Each of the books in the Boyle and Keneally series has had elements of folk horror woven into the narrative alongside the more conventional elements of gangsters and serial killers. As a fan of horror this is something that is totally my cup of tea. Indeed, when one of their team heads to a remote, insular island community my first thought was of Summerisle.

Again, this proved an excellent police procedural, though readers new to the series should be warned that It is quite dark and disturbing in parts. S.A. Dunphy not only provides strong storytelling but has created in Jessie, Seamus and their team very relatable characters.

I certainly will be looking forward to further novels in the series.

The crime fighting team of Jessie Boyle, Seamus Keneally, and Terri Kehoe make for the perfect team in that their various strengths, combined with their real affection for one another, make them formidable adversaries. As with the previous books in this series, it is the rapport and camaraderie between the members of the crime fighting team that kept me thoroughly invested in the outcome.

The fate of little Rosie Blake keeps the reader rooting for the team's success. Along the way they encounter gangsters, corrupt financiers, morally bereft lawyers, old Irish sects, and the famous Dublin "Hellfire Club".

The great characterization of the small investigating team, along with the Irish setting and lore have kept me invested in this series and I'm already looking forward to book four.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review the third book by S..A, Dunphy, featuring Jessie Boyle and Seamus Keneally. "Her Child's Cry" starts off the the kidnapping of young Rosie Blake from her hospital bed - where she's being treated for a very malignant and dangerous cancer - in broad daylight.
With the team hot on the case, the next thing we discover is that her erstwhile kidnapper is dead, and Rosie is nowhere to be found.
As in previous books in this series, the author taps into the rich supernatural history of Ireland - this time involving The Reavers and the Hellfire Club.
Throughout the book we're shown snippets of other characters inner lives as Jessie and Seamus, along with researcher Teri and Commissioner Dawn Wilson work to find the child before something worse (!) can happen to her.
Always tense and suspenseful, this entry in the series does not disappoint; characters are put in peril, secrets are revealed and there's a great dose of supernatural chills.
Recommended.

This series just keeps getting better and better!!

In this book, the team of Jessie Boyle, Seamus Keneally, Terri Kehoe and Commissioner Dawn Wilson have only a week to find a nine year old cancer patient, Arizona Rose Blake who has been abducted but which turns into a cat and mouse chase involving the Irish mob and the Reavers, an Irish version of the Hellfire Club, a supernatural, satanic cult who are back after centuries to fulfil a prophesy of unleashing Hell on earth. Plus, the serial killer Uruz makes contact again with Jessie Boyle (via text messages and phone call) and by the end of the book, readers can anticipate that things will now be entering phase two where Uruz is concerned. I am getting very strong vibes that Uruz could be someone very close to home.

Gripping, atmospheric, twisty and unputdownable, this is another absolute winner in an already exciting and excellent series.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and the author S. A. Dunphy for the e-Arc of the book.

I feel like a broken record talking about these books -- I can't recommend the Boyle/Keneally series and SA Dunphy enough. I was an instant fan after reading the first book, and they just keep getting better. The fast paced mysteries, excellent characters, supernatural elements, Irish history and folklore all combine flawlessly into intense stories that are truly "unputdownable". I love the team and their rapport, especially between Jessie and Seamus.

Her Child's Cry is third in the Boyle/Keneally series, and while I would recommend reading Bring Her Home and Lost Graves first (for the backstory and because they are just SO GOOD), you should be fine if you are reading this as your introduction to the series. As with all the Boyle/Keneally books, Her Child's Cry ventures into some dark and disturbing territory, this time pagan cults, kidnapping terminally ill children, organized crime, and of course, murder -- all with plenty of twists and turns keeping you guessing until the final chapter. And as always, the enigmatic Uruz is watching everything and apparently feeling strangely helpful this time around. I'm looking forward to the next installment with bated breath.

I am extremely grateful to SA Dunphy, Bookouture, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read, review, and be a part of the book tour for Her Child's Cry.

Bring Her Home and Lost Graves the first 2 books in the Boyle & Keneally series had me absolutely gripped. After Lost Graves, the second in the series, left me with quite a surreal yet realistic nightmare of course I was going to jump at the chance of being on the book tour for Her Child's Cry when the lovely Sarah from Bookouture offered me a place!

In Her Child's Cry we return to the madness and mayhem alongside Jessie, Seamus, Terri and Dawn when Rosie, aged 9, who is undergoing chemotherapy treatment, is kidnapped from her hospital bed. Immediately, we're thrown into chaos and turmoil trying to understand why someone would take a sick child from her seemingly loving parents.

What follows is a whirlwind of twists and turns which will keep you guessing and completely on edge until the very last page. As with his other two books in the series, Dunphy has masterfully woven the classic police procedural with the haunting world of Irish folklore and the supernatural. The fact that many of the locations are actual notorious places within Ireland adds an extra layer of trepidation and a disturbing sense of reality. There are many moments within the book where a creeping sense of unease and darkness can be felt crawling from the pages.

Shane has an amazing ability to write characters that you cannot resist connecting with, whether they be good or bad you immediately become invested. Yet again he's blown it out of the park with Her Child's Cry and there is a full range of emotions to be had. His capacity to make characters more than your stereotypical one-dimensional good or bad guy means you're sometimes feeling empathetic for the offenders and questioning the actions and behaviours of those who are meant to protect. This clever balance leaves the reader clinging to the pages trying to decipher who exactly it is that they can trust. Right and wrong may not always be so clear cut.

Another dark, emotional, spine tingling rollercoaster of a book from Shane Dunphy which will be sure to keep you up until the wee hours. I for one cannot wait for more of Uruz, dangerous master manipulator or force for good?

I get overly excited when I find out there's a new Boyne & Keneally book coming out! I have absolutely fallen in love with the characters in this book, and I find it in fact impossible not to fall in love with both the characters and the writing. Yet again, I was hooked from the beginning.

I have to say I got really interested in the mystery itself, or the reasons behind it, since it is fairly rare to read about a 9-year-old cancer patient undergoing essential treatment being kidnapped. The parents do not seem to be as concerned as one would think they would be. The kidnapper is found fairly quickly, but because he is shot dead, more questions arise.

The book takes us into a shady Dublin crime family, a weird cult, and even Boyle's nemesis Uruz makes contact. It is all a big mess, but the specialist team on the case is one of the best.

I found this book to be slightly different in pace and tension than the previous two in the series. I think it could have moved on a bit faster at some points, but it is overall an extremely enjoyable read, totally unputdownable, and I could not wait to find out the truth.

I cannot wait for the next installment, since S.A. Dunphy is an absolutely brilliant author, and this book, and the whole series deserves to be read and praised all over the world! Hauntingly good, disturbingly tickling, and masterfully pieced together!

When is the next book coming out?
These characters are fantastic - realistic, likeable. The author does a great job keeping up with the plot while giving snippets of their ongoing lives.
A seriously ill child is kidnapped from her private hospital room - by the friendly orderly. His dead body is found, next to Rosie's favorite panda stuffy.
Jessie and her team dive in - with the help of the Commissioner. Shady financial advisor father. Shady gang leader. And a local occult group.

When nine-year-old Rosie Blake disappears from the hospital, everyone is on alert. Rosie has a rare form of cancer and has a very specific treatment plan. If she’s not found within a certain period of time she will certainly die. Criminal behaviorist Jessie Boyle and her partner Seamus Keneally must find out who took her and work hard at finding her in time.

Jessie, Seamus and the rest of the team work at a fever pace in order to locate Rosie. Danger is close at their heels, especially when a body found definitely points to the victim being Rosie’s kidnapper. Now the team must understand why the man was killed and possibly who his partner that might still have Rosie could be.

The case takes a surprising turn when a link to a cult called The Reavers proves to be behind Rosie’s disappearance. The cult is firmly rooted in dark beliefs. Beliefs such as death and sacrifice, thus truly raising the stakes in this most serious of cases.

This third book in the Boyle and Keneally series has the same horror vibe that was in the first two books. Perhaps not for the faint of heart, especially since a young child is concerned, but yet this book was impossible to put down. As each book in the series can work as a standalone novel, I definitely recommend reading the first two books, Bring Her Home and Lost Graves, for the full experience. I thoroughly enjoy this series and am excited for the next installment.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Oh, I am really enjoying this series! The writing is fabulous and there is always some Irish folklore included which just makes reading the books by this author a no-brainer for me :)

The team of Boyle and Keneally are back with an odd case. A very ill little girl is kidnapped from her hospital bed and when the kidnapper is found dead, things turn very strange indeed. Jessie and Seamus are ably supported by Terri, and course their boss, Dawn, is pretty impressive herself. There is quite a poignant scene in here with Dawn which gives you an idea about where she has come from and why she is the way she is.

Poor little Rosie needs to be found, and fast, and it is up to the team to do it. Of course, they have to wade through a lot of evidence and red herrings abound. They have some great skills though.

Amazing series and I can't wait for the next one! No pressure, of course ;)

5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

4.5⭐

This is my first introduction to Boyle & Keneally and author S.A. Dunphy and all I can think is why have I waited so long!

As this is a story that's not only full of twists and turns, but takes old Irish folk and legends, action and police procedures and creates a mystery that I honestly struggled to put down.

And with unforgettable and unique characters and the spectre of a serial killer this was a truly compelling and well-paced read.

That actually reminded me of two of my favourite TV shows The Fall and Hinterland and it's definitely a story I would recommend in fact I'm off to buy the first two books as I enjoyed it that much. 😊

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Her Child's Cry' by S.A Dunphy.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for S.A Dunphy, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 18th May 2022.

This is the fifth sixth I have read by this author but his third book by S.A Dunphy. It is also the second book in the 'Boyle & Keneally' series but can be read as a standalone. I have also read the first book in this series called 'Bring Her Home' and the second book in this series 'Lost Graves' which I loved and would definitely recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Patricia Gibney, Lisa Gardner and Lisa Regan will not want to miss this.' I am a huge fan of Lisa Gardner, Lisa Regan and Patricia Gibney so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Shane Dunphy and if this is half as good as Shane's previous books it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 64 chapters, 11 very short chapters from Rosie, Eugene, Harold and Garth and an epilogue set over 6 parts. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Ireland 🇮🇪 UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. The fact that this book is based in Ireland is even better as I have been on holiday in Ireland many times so may even recognise some places Shane has set the book around.

This book is written in third person perspective with the main protagonists being Jessie Boyle, Seamus Keneally and Terri Kehoe. The benefits of third person perspective and especially with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

'Her Child's Cry' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Shane discusses/includes child kidnapping.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVED IT!! Well I must say Shane you are very talented man!!! What another absolutely addictive read!! I am already eagerly awaiting the fourth book in the 'Boyle & Keneally' especially after that breath taking cliff hanger ending!!!

This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that places you write in the heart of the storyline and leaves you hearing the roar of the helicopter, seeing the stars on the mountain and has your heart pounding. The title, cover and synopsis work perfectly with the storyline.

This is the third crime novel I have read by Shane and he is one of those rare authors who books are fantastic and yet also keep getting better and better. I have read most of his non fiction books from when he was working as a child protection worker and loved them all. They were heartbreaking and I shed many tears but they were fantastic books. Shane then started writing crime novels and was intrigued by the change of genre and was looking forward to seeing if these book would be as good as his previous non fiction work. I am very pleased to say that Shane writes fiction just as fantastically as non fiction!!!

This storyline is definitely unique which I loved. I'm a big fan of crime but it can be tedious reading similar storylines so this one was a nice refreshing change. It is extremely paced and addictive. I was completely absorbed from page one until the fantastic explosive ending. It is ram packed with suspense, mystery, history, mythology, horror, tension, humour and everything you want in an unputdownable page turner. I loved the gothic atmosphere surrounding this story with the Reavers, the Balor, The Hell fire Club and the dark storyline. There were so many twists and turns throughout leading you to one red herring and then another whilst constantly questioning yourself who is actually behind everything all along. I enjoyed that there were several different sub plots and so much going on without getting confusing. I absolutely loved the first book 'Bring Her Home' and the second book 'Lost Graves' but I must say this one hooked me in even more which I wouldn't have thought was possible after the absolutely addictive previous books. It was definitely something about the creepy storyline that I just loved. The book wrapped up perfectly with everything explained (it's a pet hate of mine where a book ends and vital parts seem to have gotten lost in the storyline and never mentioned again) but I will say that I was actually gutted with what happened to a certain person although they weren't particularly nice it was sad to see as I would have loved to see if anything happened between them and another character. Ummm... I was going to say something else but won't as I don't want to spoil it for future readers but please do pop me a message if you read this book as I'd love to know your thoughts as I'm sure you will know what I mean!! One of the best things about this series too is that although it is predominantly a crime thriller it has sprinkles of humour throughout which lightens it up from time to time and Shane does it well. I was shocked when I did discover who was behind the kidnapping as I had genuinely believed it was others entirely so well done Shane on shocking me, not an easy feat considering how many crime books I have read. I was intrigued about the Balor along with Mucklagh Bothy and Tory Island and enjoyed doing my own research on them along with reading the fantastic information Shane adds in the acknowledgements and comments so when you read this book make sure you don't miss out on that section. I really couldn't recommend this book and this series more and I would absolutely love to see this made into a TV series!!

The fact that Shane has obviously either done some research or knows alot about mythology and Ireland (the fact that he lives there probably helps) shines through and I was intrigued by all the mythology, folklore and history in the storyline. I actually ended up reading more about the Balor which was quite interesting. I also enjoyed learning some of the Irish sayings scattered through. This book is an explosive addition to an absolutely addictive series and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next in the series.

It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.

Although this is the third book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.

Clear your schedules before even turning a page in this book as it is utterly addictive and you will not be able to put it down!!

I absolutely loved meeting all the characters for this series again and I am completely invested in each of them. Jessie, Seamus and Terri worked as a perfect team and I loved the team dynamics. Each of the main characters were strong, realistic and their own unique personalities and they came together perfectly as a team and as friends. I absolutely love Jessie and Dawn's kick a## take no cr## attitude and although Terri gives the impression of a timid mouse she has definitely got a surprise roar and bite to her. I love seeing how she has come along since the first book and getting stronger and stronger. I really enjoyed seeing much more of her in this book and seeing her work solo and how she coped it certain situations. I love seeing strong women leads in books being female myself and you can't get much stronger than these three!!! Jessie is absolutely ruthless and I just loved her attitude. Although Dawn is the commissioner she is down to Earth and friendly and cares about her team. I really enjoyed watching Jessie and Seamus friendship grow and develop and I'm looking forward to watching them together and seeing what happens. They clicked together really well and although Seamus calls Terri his sister in the book the three actually seem to have the family feel about them with Jessie and Seamus being Terri's Mum and Dad who are protective of her. I haven't read a book with such fantastic team dynamics in a long time. In terms of personalities and these three have become like friends to me who I thoroughly look forward to meeting again and spending time with them. Jessie seems to be quite serious but can relax and have fun. Seamus is definitely the class clown and brought alot of humour to any situation. However, after what happened at the end of this book I am worried that some of his happiness and humour is going to take a nose dive and I can't really blame him. My heart completely went out to him at the twist of events and I'm intrigued to see how he will cope. Seamus and Jessie both make fantastic partners and have that rare ability to speak without words and they know what each other mean but also so does the reader. Terri is the wild card and I'm looking forward to watching her come out of her shell even more. Seamus is cute and I think his relationship with his mum Katie is lovely and Katie is another character I really like and am looking forward to meeting again as I missed her in this book. I am looking forward to seeing this great gang again soon.

Congratulations Shane, a man of many talents, on yet another absolutely fantastic explosive addition to a very addictive series. This is why you are my favourite male author!! Here is to yet another success 🍻!!!

Overall an absolutely addictive, unique and unputdownable addition to a page turning series

I would have to say that this one might be my favorite one ,I said might be out of the three books so far. But its hard to say because each book is good in their own way. And the topic is always different but so very creepy and some what dark and twisted . But one of the reasons I love this series so much is how the author waves together in his storyline the touches of the supernatural and splashes of Irish history, so not only am I reading an enjoyable non stop on the go thriller but I get to learn more about the Irish history and their supernatural beliefs. Which also gives it that creepy and dark factor. In this case I learned about a true case that involves children going missing between 2015 and 2019 there were one hundred Irish children abducted. And that only fifty-six children were ever found .I also got to see how even today there are some who still believe in the old supernatural beliefs. Between the Creepy figures that kept appearing, the crime syndicate, a serial killer , and the lies and secrets this story will keep you on the edge of your set,and will also make you glad that you read it with the lights on. Because the only two characters you can trust and believe in is the two main characters themselves.

3.5 stars upped to 4 stars for Christmas.

Seven months after I finished HER CHILD’S CRY and I can’t remember anything about it except that there was a bit more backstory on Police Commissioner Dawn Wilson. Even after reading reviews describing the plot, nothing comes back except that trivial piece of knowledge.

This is a charming little series. There are no negatives about it, but I won’t be paying full price for another instalment (even if full price is only $5). I would likely read more about these investigators if sequential books were free from the library or, at most, available at a discounted price on kindle.

This series keeps getting better and better. The third volume brings same supernatural goodness with a helping of smart and funny dialogues and non-stop action. The creepiness factor is higher than ever. A little girl with a rare form of cancer is kidnapped from the hospital. Jessie’s team knows how time is of the essence. Pretty soon, their investigation takes them to a very dark cult of devil worshippers… or could there be a more pedestrian explanation? Now that we know everybody, it’s easy to imagine how they’re all going to act, even if the characters surprised me. This time more than ever, there is a clock counting down. There is one twist after another and, when you think you reached the end, there is another plot turn. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, #NetGalley/#Bookouture!

Boyle and Keneally's courage and their detecting and investigative skills are called upon to find a seriously ill child abducted from her hospital bed, putting her life in imminent danger. The child's parents seem to be hiding something, and menacing darkness surrounds their investigations. The theme of evil folklore permeates this story, and the reader is never quite sure what is real.

I like the intensity and the story's suspenseful nature; with its clever plotting and the believable team dynamic, it's an addictive read. The Irish setting, interwoven folklore, and relatable characters make this disturbing and intriguing to read. The ending is impactful and paves the way for the next instalment in this excellent series.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

Shane Dunphy has written a corker of a 3rd instalment in this crime series! It features forty-odd-year-old criminal behaviourist and social psychologist, Jessie Boyle and decorated detective, Seamus Keneally. Jessie, formerly of London Met's Violent Crime Task Force, has returned to her homeland.

With its Dublin based crime setting, this tale of crime and folklore is disturbing and creepy. History and mythology are blended into the current action to create an intriguing tale. Jessie, Seamus and Terri make a marvellous team, and I will be continuing this promising series. A clever and compelling police procedural with a twisty finish.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.

This is the third book to feature Boyle and Kinelly and OMG WHAT A READ!!!!
It begins with the abduction of a sick child but this is only the beginning. Hooked from the first to the last page. This is an intense read which had me glued to my seat and reading late into the night. Plenty of heart in your mouth moments and packed to the rafters with tension and suspense. I loved it and can't wait to read more from this very talented author.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.

The third book in this gripping and action packed series. I adore the mix of mythology, the evil serial killers and the gorgeous settings. From start to finish it's a rollercoaster of emotions and at times I was nearly too shook to turn the page.

The main characters are fascinating as individuals and powerful as a team. I love watch them progress professionally and personally.

This series is going from strength to strength and I'm here for it!

interesting but a little different

I love Shames books but this one seemed to Jump a little too much for me, almost a little far fetched. He writes very well, and I still did enjoy this book, just not as much as I have previous writings.

I really loved this thriller, which is the third book in the series, of which I have loved the previous two books too.

The story is set in Ireland, and we are back with Jessie Boyle, Seamus Keneally, Terri and Dawn, as they gather round as a strong team, to help solve the case of a little kidnapped girl with cancer, called Rosie. She has been kidnapped from hospital, and the team are rushing to find out who has taken her and why. They need to find her within ten days, otherwise she could die. Will they be able to find her on time?

This is a wonderful book, which is really fantastic. I look forward to reading more books from this author. Highly recommended!

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

First Sentence: ‘Between 2015 and 2019 a total of one hundred children were abducted in Ireland, one third of whom were taken within the Dublin Metropolitan Area.’

Ten days. That is all the time the police have to rescue Rosie Blake. Rosie is a child with cancer who was stolen from the hospital. She can only survive ten days without her medication. The police find the suspect quickly, except he is dead; murdered and Rosie still is missing. It is up to criminal behaviorist Jessie Boyle and her team to find Rosie in time before Jessie dies too.

Doesn't everyone love a good race-against-the-clock mystery? Dunphy creates a setup that is tense and effective and encourages the reader to keep going. To end the opening section with a single-sentence portent—“That would come later.”—is both unnecessary and lazy. There was no need to add an extra push.

Dunphy’s principal characters are interesting and fully developed. You know who they are and how they fit together, giving you bits of their personalities. He knows how and when to interject humor, both in his dialogue and in the situations he describes.

It is unfortunate when the author begins with a plot for a compelling mystery but decides to veer off down a strange path. The plot becomes overly complicated, filled with extraneous historical information, and unnecessary portents, of which there are many. The story gets lost due to a lack of focus. The folklore is interesting, but it overshadows the strength of the plot rather than adding to it.

Dunphy has the talent to write a really good mystery, if that’s his goal, or to write a fascinating book of magic and folklore, or a history of Ireland. Combining the three became messy and convoluted.

HER CHILD’S CRY is the third book in the Boyle/Keneally series. One hopes an author learns and grows with each book. Sadly, that is not the case here.
