Embrace the seductive call of the latest novel in Christine Feehan’s #1 New York Times bestselling Carpathian series.

Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva is a Lycan of royal blood. She knows what is expected of her, but all she wants is to be out from under her family’s watchful eyes. There is a fire inside her that is building. A restlessness coupled with a sense of growing dread. Every day she feels the weight of the legacy passed down through generations. The prophecy that says a man will come to claim her as his mate, and that she will guard his soul. She knows nothing about him except that he is hers. But nothing seems real until the night she meets him in the flesh....

Afanasiv Belan is a Carpathian, an ancient one. In all the centuries of his existence, no one has ever affected him like Vasilisa. He can see into her mind and feel what is in her heart. They are so alike, warriors bound by honor and plagued by secrets. They both know they must reveal the darkest parts of their souls if they hope to survive and protect the ones they love.

But if they claim each other as lifemates, it will change them down to the bone. They will become something more—something feared by both of their kinds....

First Impressions
Dark Whisper is the latest in the Carpathian/Dark Series. I have had so much fun with these books, and I know its a LONG series, but the world building is so fascinating. And we are in a new serial arch of the world building so its so fascinating to see what Christine Feehan is building here. I was so curious to see what she would deliver with Dark Whisper, it does have some unique elements and we get back to the Lycan’s and their society. I loved the Lycan books about ten books ago, so I was so pleased that Christine Feehan returned back to them. This story was so intriguing as the heroine is royalty and there is plenty of action and thriller feel to the story, so if you are a fan of romantic thrillers or romantic suspense mix in with paranormal aspects then this is going to be a book for you.

What I Loved
I will say that there were so many aspects to this story that I truly ended up loving. The first is the characters that I want to discuss first. We have our hero, who is one of the ancient Carpathians but is also a bit more modernized as well. So if that type of hero works for you, then you will really end up loving that. He is so respectful of the heroine all the way through and understands what she needs from him and gives that to her. I love his steady faith in her and has his own abilities but isn’t super dominant unless she is in danger, but even in those scenes, it’s so well done and he is a healthy hero for sure. He is so encouraging and protective of those under his care and that is such an attractive quality. Then we have our heroine, who is a fighter but also royalty. Her mother trained her to fight because she knew that her path would be different from her siblings and that she would be lifemated to a Carpathian. I like the heroine, she is feisty and strong-willed but also has a level of grace about her. I did like that she didn’t get too offended by certain things from the hero, but took time to think through things. The world-building is superb and we go on an adventure with our couple that I have NEVER seen this author do, and wow what an adventure this book ended up being. I didn’t know what to make of it, to be honest, because there was something so different in the plot and the aspects of the world-building. I am becoming more and more intrigued by the four gateways and the tarot card reading. Christine Feehan never ceases to surprise me with her wit and talent of penning such remarkable growth in her world-building that literally stuns me with every serial arch.

What I Struggled With
I will say that what I struggled with the most was the romance unfortunately with this one and is the reason that it didn’t quite make it to five stars like I was expecting it to. After the last two previous books got to five stars, I was expecting this one to do the same. However, it didn’t quite make it. Not saying that I didn’t enjoy my reading with this one, because it’s a definite solid 4-star! However, I feel like the plot working and the world-building made it so that the actual romance actually suffered the most from it. I wanted so much to feel the connection that these two had, but I just wasn’t quite feeling it as I was expecting to. And side note, the heroine drove me nuts at times. I wanted to love her so much, but she was a bit too much of a modern woman for my tastes. She can fight and everything but I wanted to feel her more feminine side that we only received small glimpses of.

Overall View
I found Dark Whisper to be a powerful read that kept me hooked from beginning to end. It’s a story of unique storytelling, a plot with its challenging archs that will leave the reader breathless, and a romance that will intrigue and fascinate the reader in such a way that you will be charmed by their story and keep you yearning for more!

I cannot believe this is the thirty-sixth book in the Dark (Carpathian) books (Ms. Feehan also revealed that this is her 100th book, what an accomplishment!). I have been enthralled with this series since 2009; this was the series that officially introduced me to PNR, and the only PNR series I still faithfully buy and read.

The MC protagonists are two people who could not be more polar opposites of each other. The heroine Vasilisa (Vasi) is a princess of Lycan of royal blood. Afanasiv (Siv) Belan is one of the ancient monastery Carpathian males who has waited hundreds of years for the one and only woman who holds his soul. Both Vas and Siv are fierce, independent warriors in their own realm.

The lycans and Carpathian hold an uneasy truce because the combining of the blood of these two species eventually evolves into a powerful being that is practically unstoppable and indestructible. For the thriving lycan community, such a being is potentially monstrous; the Carpathians need as many people as possible and tend to be more open to rolling the genetic dice.

But fate has the last word, the Carpathian male soul is transferred to his future lifemate upon his birth and until she is re-born in his lifetime...he waits. Vasi was a woman worthy to hold her fated mate's soul.

Vasi is one powerful, independent woman who was trained for battle and brought up with an awareness that she is has a fated mated. Vasi and Siv perfectly completed each other; Siv tempered his ancient beliefs to allow Vasi the space to be her authentic self. Vasi, to her credit wasn’t a shrew, screeching and fighting against her fated lifemate. This is a couple the reader wants to stand and cheer for.

I have so much love and admiration for the magnificent seven men of the monastery. Those ancient men bend the knee to no one; they have relied on each other and kept true to their vows for centuries. I love how they still have each other’s back as their brethren find long hoped for lifemates. I’m looking forward to the remaining ancients, Petur, Nicu, and Benedek to find awesome lifemates of their own…women who are intelligent, compassionate, and authentic.

Although story arc has moved far beyond a few characters introduced several years ago (the triplets), I have hope that one day there will be a place in the Carpathian tapestry for beloved favorites to have their voices heard.

This book could be read as standalone because the can and story arc has evolved greatly since the first book, Dark Prince. However, it would be a wonderful treat to start at the beginning and watch as Ms. Feehan weaves a brilliant tapestry that has so many more golden threads to be added.

Dark Whisper is so action-packed with epic battles with an engaging couple who complement each other. I'm blurry-eyed reading on my Kindle all day and I cannot wait to re-read the adventure again!

Four and a Half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒
Dark Whisper by Christine Feehan is the thirty-second book in her very popular Dark series. Dark Whisper can be read as a stand-alone, as the author provides a very helpful family tree at the front of the book.

Book Recap:
Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva is of royal blood and she is a Lycan. Her mother has passed down the traditions and told her she will soon find her lifemate. Vasilisa is restless as she knows her lifemate is near, but she knows nothing about him. Her mother told her the prophecy is that her lifemate will find her, and she must protect his soul.

Afanasiv Belan is a Carpathian and a warrior. He’s never met anyone like Vasilisa, his lifemate. He can see what’s in her mind and he knows how she feels, and he feels the bond between them. They fight in unison, each aware of each other and able to fight for and defend each other against their enemies. But, both Vasilisa and Afansiv have secrets and in order to bond completely, they must share their secrets and be able to accept each other.

My Thoughts:
Picking up a book that is #32 in an established series when I haven’t read a single one before, in a genre I’m not familiar with, wasn’t the best idea I’ve had in a while, but it turned out great. This book is full of action and the world-building is amazing.

I learned so much about the different factions, who are friends, who are enemies, and who are friends who turn into enemies. It’s a very complex world, however, if I had been reading the entire series, I’m sure I would have known most of the characters and their worlds and it would have been easier for me to understand. However, the author does take her time and explain things, plus she has an index in the back that helps explain the Carpathians and the Lycans, and that helped me a lot.
The basic story is about power, greed, and control of others. It’s a complex story that kept me on my toes, and I found myself immersed in the world and wondering if they will ever be able to find peace with each other.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Vasilisa is one of the Lycan royals with special powers to defeat demons who come from the underworld and able to close off portals from there, too. She knows there’s trouble brewing but not sure where it’s coming from. She also knows that she protects the soul of her lifemate and he is now near.

Afanasiv is a Carapathian ancient who has fought evil for many centuries. He and Vasilisa must fight many battles as they navigate their new status as lifemates and get to know each other, But a lot of this must be put on the back burner as there is a traitor trying to capture all the royals and imprison them in the Underworld.

Vasilisa was a strong fighter, selfless in her mission to protect her people and Afanasiv is a force to be reckoned with too. They’re well matched and together make a powerful, unified front in a battle between good and evil. There’s a lot of battles! At almost 500 pages, this is a long book that took me a while to get through. I enjoyed it even though a lot of it went over my head because I hadn’t read the previous books. I will say the story had many names that tripped me up a bit. If it’s a side character it doesn’t really make a difference in my enjoyment of the story, but if it’s a main character like Afanasiv, it’s something that jars me up every time I read the name.

Dark Whisper
can be read as a standalone, but I think fans of this long-running series will appreciate it more than someone just jumping in (like I did, lol). There’s a lot going on and world building that has happened. I’m still not sure exactly what a Carpathian is. The story is an exciting, action-packed adventure with plenty of chemistry and steam between Vasilisa and Afanasiv!

A copy was kindly provided by Berkley in exchange for an honest review.

Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva is being pushed by her family and people to take a mate soon. She is one of the royal lycans and she knows her duty but she also knows that she cannot mate just yet. She holds a secret inside her that even her family doesn't know. She holds the other half of a Carpathian male's soul. She knows she is destined to be his mate but she also knows that because of her friendship with a female Carpathian, she is different from her family and no longer fully Lycan. If her family were to find out, there might be big trouble for her because her family and her people already don't trust the Carpathians.

When Vasilisa comes across a Carpathian male that needs her help, she knows that he's her mate and so does he. She doesn't think that she's ready to be a mate to someone yet but the pull between them is strong. Afanasiv Belan is an ancient Carpathian who had been staying at the monastery with some of the other ancient Carpathian males. They are very old, and very dangerous because they have lived so long without their mates. Some of them are close to turning vampire or meeting the sun so they don't turn into vampires. Vampires are Carpathians that have lived too long and chosen to turn into evil vampires. Carpathian males hunt these evil creatures and kill them. Afanasiv has killed too many to count and with each new kill they are pushed to the edge without their mates.

I liked Afanasiv because he knew right away that Vasilisa was a warrior, an equal to himself and he didn't try to stop her from being what she is. If you've been reading this series you know how dominant and alpha some of these Carpathian males can be, always telling their mates what is best for them. It gets old, at least to me so it was nice to see this male being proud of the warrior Vasilisa was. The action scenes were great. The romance between Afanasiv and Vasilisa took a backseat to the story of how the evil has infiltrated her family, how it got there and who was behind it though. I was really kind of hoping for more romance between these two but we don't really get that until towards the end of the book because there was so many other things going on getting in the way of that.

This book for me was a little slow though with all the rehashing of some of the backstory of some of villains that we already know. I also think some of the names of these characters are starting to get ridiculous. Yes, they are unique but in my head while reading I know I'm not pronouncing them right and just shorten them for myself.

The twists and turns this story took made it interesting though. There were so many times I thought I knew where this story was going or who was behind the curtain pulling the strings, only to find out I was wrong. If you've been reading this series from the beginning like I have, you'll like this installment but this series is really best to be read in order because of all of the characters who have a habit of showing up unexpectedly in some books throughout the series. Not that I'm complaining about this, I like seeing old couples and finding out how they are. But because there are so many couples, so many characters and more characters popping up in each new book, it's best to read in order to get the full effect. The ancients from the monastery and their mates are really adding new facets to this series which I like and there are still many ancients who haven't found their mates yet so it'll be interesting to see finds their mate next.

Disclosure: I received an e-cook copy via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book was like 90% fighting, I really wish we had more scenes with just the MC’s being together as a couple. But the whole book takes place over like a week so there wasn’t time with all the fighting. I’m really enjoying this new storyline though and even if I was starting to get bored with the fight scenes I kept reading because I really wanted to see what will happen next. I think the next ancient to get a book might be Petru and I feel like we know nothing about him so far so that’s exciting. Again I will say this, please please give Justice a book, I don’t care how crazy it has to be to get him out and find him a lifemate, I really want a book for him. Even though I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the last one, I’m still really happy about the new life that’s been given to this series with the new storyline.

Thirty-second in the Dark paranormal romance series and revolving around Carpathians and other races. Here the Lycans are working with the Carpathians with the couple focus on Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva, the Lycan princess, and Afanasiv "Siv" Belan, an ancient Carpathian.

This eARC was sent to me by NetGalley and Penguin Random House for an honest review. If you're interested, there is a chronological listing of the Dark books on my website.

My Take
Dark Whisper is a story that revolves around power, the jealousy and the greed for it.

That was fun. A separate race with its own rulers, hiding within a country. To add more conflict, Lycans and Carpathians are not all enemies, so much as some seeing each as the other side, distrusted, hated. Part of this intolerance is seen with the mixed bloods, who are not tolerated by Lycans while the Carpathians see them as guardians.

I do wonder how much of Vasilisa's resistance to her brother's wishes stems from the secrets she shares, shared, with their mother. A mother who died before she could explain.

There's a spiritual aspect to Dark Whisper. Not in a religious sense, but more metaphysical. A sense the Lycans use to supervise the health and safety of their land. Hmmm, wonder if we could harness that to fix what's happening to our world . . .? Part of the spiritual is Vasilisa reading the cards when she wakes, and Sorina points out that she cannot pick and choose what she wants to believe. That sounds like religion, wherein people pick and choose which parts they want to believe.

I am confused about why Lycans need to sleep through the day? From the start of the Dark series, we've known that Carpathians cannot be in sunlight and sleep the day away, but I've never gotten a reference to wolves needing the night. Although . . . maybe it's the changes in Vasilisa herself?? in which case, I wish Feehan had put some emphasis on this.

I love that Vasilisa is such a strong woman, capable of defending herself and others. Siv is also strong, in arms, in intellect, in strategizing. He's also strong enough to accept a strong woman as a mate. It does surprise me that Vasi accepts him so easily and quickly.

Accepting Vasilisa as an independent woman is a beautiful thing, and then we have those government men with their lame questions about why she doesn't have a mate. What?? A woman isn't complete without a man??

Feehan is subtle about explaining Lycan gifts. She also explores Carpathian male aging and its temptations in a different way from previous Dark stories I've read (the last one was Dark Predator , 19). Keeping that in mind, Dark Whisper talks more about the euphoria that battle brings, its addicting nature.

Feehan primarily uses third person protagonist point-of-view from Vasilisa's and Afanasiv's perspectives. Which makes sense, since the story is about them.

The pace feels slow in some places — my primary annoyance is the repetition. Oy. I can understand wanting to ensure the reader grasps the nature of each group in Dark Whisper, but must it be repeated so often? Siv feels weaker with all his repetitive whining about his honor and how the years are wearing on him. Then there's the filler about the triplet mages. All the characters and their inter-relatedness slows me down as well, trying to figure out where everyone fits in.

Oh, man, Siv is holding back any number of awful secrets, and there's one that explains why he chose a different name.

I also seem to recall that the binding between a Carpathian and his lifemate had to be bound with sex. It is something of a treat that Siv doesn't push this, but I kept expecting him to at least refer to it, prepare Vasi for it. Of course, then we have Vasi whining on, only a bit though, that she doesn't think she'll react to Siv physically. I mean, how lame is that? Her emotions are certainly overwhelming her intellect . . . as are those wet panties of hers.

There are too many Lycan truisms that bite the dust in Dark Whisper. Fortunately, Vasilisa is an optimist and points out all the good her brother's reign has done for Lycans. Which in turn raises an excellent question about why so many Lycans are turning to betrayal.

The action includes battles, rescues, captures, escapes, gladiatorial combat, torture — all for the need to control. It'll take quick thinking and weapons skills to counter the enemies.

And yet more relationships are revealed that cause them to fear yet more.

There is a juvenile feel to the writing, but all in all, Dark Whisper is most interesting for this look in at the Lycans.

The Story
Oy, Vasilisa's brother wants her to marry . . . one of his choices. But as a warrior, Vasi intends to follow her mother's orders just as she's followed her training.

As she waits for fate to step up, Vasi feels a growing dread as the earth trembles and evil is felt, and she feels a pull on her own soul.

The Characters
The Lycans are . . .
. . . wolves based in a very remote area of the Eastern Siberia boreal forest and consider themselves under a monarchy, not the Russian government.

The House of Korolyvolk is . . .
. . . the ruling house of the Lycans. The stubborn Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva is the only sister and has an earth gift. The arrogant Andros is Vasilisa's oldest brother and the ruler of her family, their people. He's also good friends with Dimitri. Garald and Grigor are her twin brothers. Their parents, Vasili and Bronya, had been murdered. Olga, a former dancer, is their beloved aunt, their mother's sister. Clareese is the cook. Randy is disaffected kitchen help.

Lada is a widow with a three-year-old daughter, Alyona, who has been seeing Andros. Garald is attracted to Taisiya, the daughter of old believers. Karine is the woman Grigor had been seeing.

Kendal and Odessa Balakin own Wolf's Retreat, a small tavern and inn patronized by most everyone. Alik Bykov is, had been, best friends with Garald and Grigor. Gav Sobol, Arman Botnik, and Brody Portnov are part of Bykov's group. Zev Hunter, lifemate to Branislava Dragonseeker, is one of the most experienced hunters ( Dark Blood , 23). Daciana is a woman on Zev's team. Klim drives.

The Sacred Circle is . . .
. . . an outlawed Lycan group who believe in the old ways, including that women should stay home, so it's no surprise that only men are allowed to be judges of the Sacred Circle. Vovo and his disgusting son, Grisha Golubev (Belka is his mother), Artyom Morozov needs rules to live in the world as he can't think for himself, Stepan and Polina Belov (Lada's parents), Ira Semenov, and Rudlof Drozdov, who had been close friends with Garald. Maria is a servant.

The Carpathian males are . . .
. . . born with a split soul, the light half of which is given to a female. As the years spin by, the male loses the ability to see color or feel emotion. Without care, the male can turn to the dark side completely, becoming a vampire, whom Carpathians hunt down and kill, even as they search for their lifemate.

Afanasiv "Siv" Belan is an ancient Carpathian, who has been hunting vampires for over 2,000 years. Dragomir is a friend. Young Josef tried to teach Siv about computers.

Sorina Vad is Vasilisa's best friend . . . with whom she shares a dangerous secret.

Ivory is Razvan's lifemate, and they are Carpathians famous for hunting vampires. Sandu is one of Siv's brethren ( Dark Tarot , 31); Adalasia is his lifemate. Liona is Adalasia's sister who guards one of the four gates of Hell. Other dangerous Carpathians include Benedek Kovac, Petru Cioban, and Nicu Dalca, who runs with the wolves. Gabriel and Francesca adopted Skyler, thinking she was human. Natalya and Vikirnoff guarded Ivory's and Razvan's backs. Lucian was in Dark Guardian , 8. I think Leona guards another gate, and her family has a connection to Justice. Aura guards the gate in Algeria.

The distrusted Dimitri Tirunul is a Carpathian mated to Skyler ( Dark Wolf , 22; Razvan is Skyler's father; her mother had been a mage with an earth gift). Dimitri and Skyler protect the wolves, creating a sanctuary. He was the spark that almost set off war between the Carpathians and the Lycans. Fen, Dimitri's blood brother; his lifemate is Tatijana. Mikhail is their prince.

That tricky Dragonseeker lineage is one of the most revered; Skyler is a Dragonseeker (as is Siv), Mihai and his lifemate Rhiannon who gave birth to Soren (married a mage and they had children Razvan and Natalya) and Tatijana and Branislava Dragonseeker.

The Vampires
Prince Vitus is a master vampire who loves to inflict pain but is a coward at heart. His servants include Rufus and the bullish Mars. Mark was a Lycan tracker who has become a ghoul. Gazsi, a.k.a. Slayer of Hunters, is another master vampire who had been a legendary Carpathian hunter and friend to Prince Vladimer. Baird is another vampire, one whom Benedek taunts.

The Demons
Lilith wants to rule without interference. Lucifer is her boss. Mitro, one of Lilith's cousins, had been a lifemate to Arabejila. Dax saved Arabejila's mother's baby's life. Hattie is one of the demons in the unknown's team. Molly is usually partnered with Patsy, who loses her temper too often. Gaia is a, was a, Carpathian child kidnapped by Lilith, who insists on staying to provide companionship and aid to Justice, the "beast" who is an ancient Carpathian imprisoned in Hell. Tiberiu is Gaia's brother.

Xavier is a high mage who wants to wipe out all Carpathians and be immortal. What's truly horrible is that Xavier had been the instructor to all Carpathians. His triplet brothers include Xaviero, who had been sent to the underworld; Xaviero, who had a son, Barnabas, a.k.a. Nikita, who teaches at the university and is Razvan's cousin. The third brother is Xayvion. Anatolie.

Inessa is the Lycan who brutally betrayed Olga. The Earth Mother is a powerful source many seek. The thrall is a kind of madness that can overtake honorable Carpathians. Sange rau are an abomination. The monastery is where ancient Carpathians at risk of turning vampire go to meditate. The government men include Nikolay Sokolov and Feliks.

The Cover and Title
The cover is sweet with the pale Vasilisa in her trademark white furs and jewels against a snowy, forested background with its bluish shadows, and two wolves waiting on her. A bit below the top is an info blurb in black. The author's name is below it in a deep red violet to match Vasi's lipstick. Below Vasi's chin is the title in a deep, dark grey with some series info below that in the same gray.

The title refers to the Dark Whisper that terrifies Afanasiv Belan.

EXCELLANT AUDBLE EDITION NARRATION WAS GREAT!! The Story Not so much!

Vasilisa Sidkorolysavolksa is a Lycan Royal Princess her lifemate is Afanasiv Belan one of the newer Carpathian Characters who came from a hidden monastery. He is thousands of years old.

The story is full of Gore it reads more like horror story than a Carpathian paranormal story. At first it doesn't even seem like it's the Dark series at all. It reads more like a Lycan story mixed in with some Carpathians. It doesn't fit with the Dark series. We get hell called the underworld Lilith Satan's wife controlling the demons from hell. Lots of Gory torture. Its off the hinge with so many fight actions scenes with demons. The writing style is a bit different than Christine Feehans usual style. It almost at times felt like she didn't write some of the scenes. The banter between characters felt immature. There are virtually no sex scenes. I guess all of those who wanted CF to stop writing some many sex scenes got their wish. I would rather have all the long erotic sex scenes back then all this Gore and Horror. I also, personally don't want to read about anything to do with Russia. Russia in my opinion should not be honored in any way!! That country should not be given any respect or mention!!

The story is depressing.

What saved the story for me was Razvan. I love Razvan and he was written perfectly. Defending his daughter Skylar and killing that despicable Barnabas. Barnabas the High mage and son of Xaviero thought he was all that. But My Man Razvan dismantled him like he was and Ant scurrying around.

Bravo to Razvan who saved the story for me.

I hope CF gets back to our original Carpathians in the Carpathian Mountains. I really missed Gregori and Mikhail and the other Carpathians who have become like friends in a fictional world. The characters I have been reading about over the last 21 years or so. I really hope CF brings back the Carpathian children. They really lift the Dark series up!!

Narration was Excellent!

(4.5) Close to perfect and that is hard to achieve so many books in. Explored in a new direction of magic and abilities along with bringing back a few old friends. The cherry on top for me is there was a relationship without instant page burning explicit loving. I realize that Christine's books are known for the level of erotica and I truly believe so many miss out on her talented imaginative worlds that she builds and that each one always, always has hope and family. Vasilisa (Lycan royal) just hits all the spots, her gifts her openness to always do right by her family and the light she holds within for her Carpathian (the prophecy) who happens to be from the Monastery and is an ancient, Afanasiv, or Siv. I did think for being such an ancient Siv had a lot more willingness to accept the new world and that was a win for me also. Such a page turner. Action with short stops to catch your breath. Vasilisa's family dynamics with her brothers was so relatable. There were a few holes in my heart when we were down in demon land so to speak. When it all comes to ripping conclusion and all the teams that had to show up fight evil in their land I held my breath that we would not lose anyone from the past. I realize this will be considered slow to some as there truly is limited steam, this was just a refresher for me to see the creativity, the plot and fell in to more a paranormal thriller with spots of love. Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. #Darkwhisper #Christinefeehan #berkleypublishing #netgalley

C.F, how many more books are there in this series and how many more carpathians are gonna pop-up in each new book with their own story as it will take 10 more years to complete the series with each ancient having its own history being told and the villians keep getting changed. Do they hate so much this carpathian race because of their longevity?

It's also a burden on old carpathians to keep going without their partner and having their young ones dying bcoz of low fertility rate.

😔 now even hell wants this race to be wiped out.
What in the name of God is going on.

I love the series and I have been a fan since the first book came out!

I felt that this one was more paranormal/fantasy than paranormal romance. It did have the romantic element of fated mates but it was mostly battling evil forces. I didn't feel the "Lifemate" connection with Siv and Vasilisa like the other couples in the series, it felt more like coworkers who fight demons.

This is actually a great entry point into the later Carpathian novels, if you are wanting to try to get in.
Vasilisa is a woman who has known since she was a child, that she held the soul of a Carpathian hunter. It has been passed down from generation to generation, and these women have all been trained to help hunt the vampires and demons of this world.
Siv knew his lifemate was alive, and found her unexpectedly when protecting her brother. He had never seen anything so beautiful in his life.
These two both have deep scars in their life. Some recent, some old. Seeing them work through them together is truly a joy.
This particular installment is heavier on the overarching story than the physical romance of the couple, but I feel like this one went a little more slow burn, and I really enjoyed it. Another solid entry into the series! Can't wait to see who's romance is next!

Christine Feehan is definitely the queen of the fated mate trope! I love this couple and how regardless of being lifemates they have their doubts whether they would be disappointed in each other. If who they are, choices they’d made would satisfy each others expectations. If the universe hadn’t made her the keeper of the light Part of his soul, would they have been each other’s choice. And now as they come to know each other would they be able to find love, a connection beyond lifemates.
.
Afanasiv, a hero who spent centuries fighting the vampire, protecting his people, all species. Then he secluded himself away for his own reasons in the Monastery with his Brethren, the Ancients. All determined to hold on to his honor, to remain strong, awaiting the one who could bring him his light, complete his soul. And now returning to the world to help his people yet again and with the hope his lifemate may be within reach…his doubts in his honor, choices he’s made begin to surface…choices that made him feel unworthy of his own bloodline. Would she accept him?
.
Vasilisa is a Lycan princess, she knows she carries a part of a Carpathian Soul, her fated mate. She follows the message of her Tarot cards. Yet even if her destiny is tied to his, it is part of her journey as well, her responsibility to her people as well as all species. She is a warrior, a hunter in her own right. How will he be part of it...will he accept all she has become. Respect the warrior she is and loyalty to her people? Would he want to completely change who she is. Take her over.
.
Before any discussion or confessions can take place, before they even lay eyes on each other, treachery, enemies, Danger emerge and the only way to possibly defeat it, save those she loves, her people they need to accept each other as lifemates.
Will they see the person, understand the choices made and the journey that forged them? Will they be able to accept what the cards say? Or will Whispers of the past, dangers of the present, overcome the whispers of hope for their future?
.
The revelations about each other takes place in an action packed, edge of seat battles between good and evil. There are fanatical factions, traitors easily corrupted for greed and power, control. Ppwerful enemies endanger her people, are used to carry out the plans of the underworld with new and old enemies to Carpathian and Lycan alike…Memories and confessions actually provide them with knowledge to make them partners, able to face and defeat enemies and save others…seeing each other act with courage and loyalty, build emotions and trust between them. Seeing how those they love and serve, who are family and friends, old and new, come together to fight by their sides gives them insight into themselves and each other. Watching the love and the strength it gives them build. Acceptance and Belonging becoming a solid force as we learn more about the Ancients’ Saga where the threat of the beast behind the guarded gates, many revelations about them and where the Ancients belong and where the journey takes them next…awesome addition to the Ancients Saga and the series as a whole

⭐⭐⭐/5

Overall impression: while I enjoyed the overarching story and blend of species in Dark Whisper, I didn't really connect with any of the characters or the romance portion of the book. It's a fairly long read (I listened to it on Scribd) and there were times when I had to go back and re-listen to it because I zoned out. In the end, it was fairly unforgettable and I probably wouldn't recommend this one if you're looking for a fantasy/paranormal romance novel.

The plot was multi-layered and interesting.
Dark Whisper was very plot-driven and focused on a few different events happening simultaneously. My only complaint was that the fight scenes were way too long and numerous, making them kind of boring to listen to.

⚖️ The characters were hard to connect to.
I'm reading the first book in the Dark series at the moment (Dark Prince) and my biggest sticking point is that . That wasn't present in this book, with Vasilisa having immense physical and mental strength. In saying that, I didn't feel much emotion towards any of the characters - so I wasn't as invested as I could have been, even though the plot was good.

I didn't really buy the romance.
The romance was definitely a weak point of the novel to me. The side characters took up a lot of page time, which made it even more difficult to appreciate any sort of romance.

Side note: I've nearly finished book one in the series but don't think I'll start any others anytime soon. They're okay if you're looking for something to fill your time with, but to me they're too long and not rewarding enough to read.

Dark Whisper is here! I adore this series, but I have missed a few along the way. I am always afraid I won't be able to jump back in, but Feehan does a great job of making it feel like I didn't miss anything. The lycans are prominent in this one and I was excited for that.

Vasi is a lycan but her life mate, Siv, is a Carpathian. While these two groups aren't enemies, they aren't besties either. So there is that tension. But, Vasi and Siv know they are life mates and that bond is unbreakable. Vasi has trained to be a warrior and this is a little difficult for the "traditional" Siv to accept but he tries. You also have the other men at the monastery who provide wonderful supporting characters. Overall, I enjoyed every character in the story!

My only issue is a strange one for me. Normally, I LOVE the fated mates trope. But, I didn't feel like these two LOVED each other so much as just accepted they were life mates. It oddly took the romance out of it for me. Honestly, there is romance-they do care for one another, but it just didn't really sell me. Maybe I getting too cynical in my old age!

Wow, did this book start off totally different than any of the other Dark series books! I love it!
Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva is a Lycan Royal, the only girl with overbearing brothers. She loves her brothers dearly but has over the years learned how to get around them and to do things without them knowing she has left the castle. She is very strong and had great training growing up to take care of herself. While out visiting with a friend at the local bar, she discovered that several strangers were in town, some asking about her friend Dimitri, and also some government men. One the men claimed to have served with her brother Adros in the military. She also discovered that her mate, the man she was guarding his soul for was in the area and was in a battle which was causing her pain through their connection.
Vasilisa left the Wolf’s Tavern in search of the man she was destined to be with. She knew that he was injured and that a trap had been set for her. As she traveled towards her mate, she learned even more things. She was traveling to an area where a fissure had occurred, and she knew demons were traveling through from the underworld. She also realized that there were vampires in the area and that was what her mate was fighting. And she knew that she was being betrayed by at least one of the villagers, a friend of the family, and that was breaking her heart.
Afanasive Belan or Siv for short, is an ancient Carpathian. Among the oldest group of Carpathians who had stayed in a monastery for several centuries, knowing that it was getting too hard to continue battling vampires and not give in to the thrall.
Somehow, he finds himself set as bait to attract his mate Vasilisa to the vampires. They were also holding Vasilisa’s brother to ensure her cooperations.
In order to rescue her brother, defeat the vampires and restore Siv’s soul, they found that they needed to be bound together. So with never having been face to face, having conversations and getting to know each other, Siv bound them together with the ancient Carpathian binding ritual. Guess they will get to know each other later!
Follow along on an action-packed adventure as Siv and Vasilisa learn to know each other. There are a great many twists and turns in this book! Vasilisa’s brothers are being controlled by demons, a family member has betrayed the royals! Portals are open and must be closed, only after travelling to the underworld for rescues.
If you haven’t read any of the dark series, this is a great book to get an idea of what the Carpathian’s are all about, and there are quite a few couples mentioned in the book.
After reading this book, I want to start the series all over again to refresh my memories on what each couple went though to be able to be together!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
I have read every Carpathian book and always eagerly await the new one. These books have developed into a world of sensuality and danger that is mesmerizing. Dark Whisper is yet another heart-pounding adventure into the Carpathian world.

Afansiv Belan, or “Siv,” is another sexy, dark, alpha male ancient that stole my heart. Siv was a fantastic character. Vasilisa Sidkorolyavolkva has been trained since birth to battle the evil that desires her species extinct. Vasilisa always knows she holds the other half of a Carpathian male’s soul. Vasilisa is also something “more.” Siv and Vasilisa’s dynamic has much more give and take than many Carpathian mates. The couple respects each other’s abilities.

I loved both Siv and Vasilisa. Their connection felt unique. Siv and Vasilisa were very much partners and Siv, being an ancient, did an admirable job letting Vasilisa be herself. I loved the development of the couple’s relationship, and their journey was stunning. The passionate connection was palpable. Around seventy percent of this book is battles and action. I loved it, but at times I felt the paranormal outshone the romance. I would have liked more sensual and personal moments between the couple added to the plot. That is a personal preference.

This book was a page-turner. There was battle after battle. I loved seeing some fan-favorite couples from previous books help Siv and Vasilisa. Dark Whisper is the thirty-sixth book in the Carpathian series. I advise reading these books in order as they build upon one another. Christine Feehan has proven with this book why she is the queen of paranormal romance! This book is edgy, gritty, and sexy. This was a page-turner that will keep you up late! I did not want this incredible journey to end. Dark Whisper is yet another jewel in the crown of the Carpathian series. This epic saga of books creates a world I want to visit again and again. I am impatiently waiting for the next book!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book through Netgalley and the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

When you stay a faithful reader of a series this long, situations can become repetitive over time. However, Feehan has captured my attention repeatedly over the years. Just as I start to recognize too many plotline patterns, she begins anew. Dark Tarot, last year, introduced much action and fast pacing. This book, Dark Whisper, has done much the same. I am loving the direction she is taking the characters and storylines. I understand the Carpathian world well, but the antiquated superior male routine gets tiring after a while. I am glad, over the last several years, that readers are able to see solid shifts in power dynamics amongst the couples as well as amongst the various species. I am so fond of the ancient monastery males and can't wait for the next book.

The mystery of the Tarot cards and the beast behind the gate began in the last Carpathian book, Dark Tarot, and has more than heated up here. This slow burn might not have as much steam as some of Feehan’s other novels, but the chemistry between Vasilisa and Afanasiv is undeniable, and scorching.

If you’re a fan of battles between good and evil, you’re going to absolutely love this one. All the dark and twisted creatures from the underworld come out to play in the forests of Siberia. Even better, some of my favorite characters from other books get cameos here, and of course, the brethren from the monastery are always ready to lend a brother and his lifemate a hand.

I really can’t wait for the rest of the Tarot mystery books!

Christine does it again with this latest Dark Novel, leaves you wanting more! I love how there is always something or someone new blended with the old ancients and Carpathians we got to know and love in previous adventures. Siv and Vasilisa are different yet very much the same. The perfect warriors, the perfect demon, vampire fighting machine. She has so many good qualities that I believe Siv would love her even if she never drew a sword. The physical fight is not what defines her.

I haven't read a book by Feehan in a while. Like so many of the authors, I really enjoy a few fell through the cracks and I got behind on them. The second I started Dark Whisper I remembered why I like reading her so much. Feehan is wonderful and pulling you into a story and making you remember her characters.

There are times when I remember something one of her characters did and think to myself that I need to get caught up on her. Well after reading Dark Whisper I pulled out a bunch of her books to do just that.

Since I've gotten behind on her book I thought I might have trouble just picking up this one and reading it and knowing what has happened in this world. But I'm happy to say that wasn't the case. I was able to pick up on a few key things that made me feel like I was still part of the series and not lost as I read the book.

I always love her characters and Dark Whisper was no different. I love how these two come together and stand with each other. There is a conflict between them at times but I think you'll like how they deal with it and move on.

This is a wonderful story that made me want to go back to the books I haven't read and pick them up. I will say that if you haven't yet read any books in this series I wouldn't start with this one. Not that it's not a good story on its own it's just that so much happens in this world that you need to read and learn it book by book. Plus as a whole, the series reads better if you read them in order.

If you're looking for a new series this spooky season this one is one I'd start. For her readers, I think you'll really enjoy Dark Whisper.

REVIEW
I fell in love with Vasilisa and her strength.
I love that the author goes back to the way the beginning of this series felt. This was old-school Carpathians and I enjoyed every word.
Vasilia is a Royal Lycan, however much to her brother's dismay she is also an incredible warrior in her own right. She is so much more...
She knows by her own mother's words to her that she is intended for the Ancient Warrior Guard Afanasiv. He unlike many of the males doesn't wish to change a thing about his lifemate.
They are in for one heck of a battle and I was so tickled to see so many from previous books. Demetri, the Dragonseekers, and so many more are all joined together to fight one greedy beast. Add in the vampires and this story just blows you away. Vasi and Siv make one powerful couple.
Fantastic story and I can't wait to see who is next.

This book involved so many character groups and back histories. Carpathians, traitors, vampires, mages, dragonseekers, puppets, lycans, demons, Lilith, etc. Despite some areas being a bit convoluted, other parts of the book dragged for me. A lot of repetition on the who and what. This was not one of my favorite Carpathian novels due to the lack of a real romance. Vasi and Siv each accepted that they were fated mates and went with it – although a romantic story never really developed. The book was more information and fights. I did score this a 4 because it had a lot of interesting information that will no doubt help in the next installment, and I had no trouble reading the whole thing.

What an unexpected story line for a Dark series book. The heroine is such a strong female and though at times insecure with certain aspects of herself is awesome! She remains true to herself and her path that she was set in from the day she was born. Though she had an ancient for a life mate she manages to make it all work without giving up her purposely to help her lineage. The fact that Siv is able to step back and allow her to be who she must even when it goes against everything in him makes me live him even more.

This book was more slow burn than any other Feehan book I’ve read. No sexy time until like 90%.

So…what I didn’t like about this book was that it wasn’t really about Siv & his life mate but rather a continuation of the overarching theme. I really felt like as an ancient he deserved a better story. So much of their love story was lost in the fighting and the drama.

This wasn’t a bad book but just a lot of back story and filling in gaps.

This is one of the best shifter novels I’ve ever read, though shifting comprises like .5% of the book. It is more focused on the mate bond and magic powers. I really enjoyed it, but this book is not “good” by any stretch of the imagination lol. It was an enjoyable read though, and I will read more in the series.
