The Effect

Rate this book
Harper McKenzie wakes to the worse possible day: her 18-year-old son has vanished from her Manhattan apartment without trace.

Worse, no-one knows what she’s talking about.

No-one thinks she had a son.

Ever.

Has she lost her grip on reality?

Or has the world shifted in a terrifying and unpredictable way?

The Effect is a taut psychological thriller that challenges everything we thought was real, as Harper’s quest to find her son pushes her to the very edge of reason.

Loved it❣️

This Audible original has some serious Matrix vibes going on, and it's fantastic. I'm hoping for another season because listeners are left with many unanswered questions.

The story begins with NY University professor, Haper McKenzie, waking up to discover that her 18-year-old son, Callum, is missing. In searching for her son, no one knows what Harper is talking about and keeps telling her that she's never had a son. Even Harper's husband denies ever having a son and is very concerned for her mental health.

Not until Harper meets a lady named Isabel, who has had a similar experience, does she realize that there's something very strange going on. Harper and Isabel begin finding other people who have been affected by this weird phenomenon, and they work together to discover the truth and hopefully bring Callum back.

This was my 1st ever podcast! I had no idea they weren't all talk show style but could be like full cast plays too!
I enjoyed the bit sized episodes because they didn't make me obligated to just keep going (even though I did lol)
I also enjoyed the story overall and I really didn't see the ending coming although the very very end was disappointing, I really wanted to know what was going to happen to Harper!

I listened to this via Audible. It started off really well, interesting premise .. mother wakes up -her 18 year old son is missing with no signs he ever existed. Husband could be gaslighting her, but she is determined to find her missing son despite the fact that everyone in her life doesn't seem to know she even had a son.

This quickly fell into a supernatural, totally unrealistic situation which seems so similar to some films I've seen that I listened to it just to get to the end.

I think I would have preferred it if her husband was gaslighting her - would have been more entertaining for me.

At first the main character was so irritating that she was making me want to quit listening to this drama. But with every episode the story got more and more interesting. You'll have here some mystery, unexplained phenomena, science vs. religion arguments, science-fitcion etc.

I love a slow burn but not to the point where the ending feels rushed (of course right when shit hits the fan). However, this was well-acted, atmospheric, had an intriguing subject matter, and kept me on my toes the whole time so my score is bumped up a bit.

Absolutely loved listening to this, did it in two days, but the ending has me all let down. The story other than that was very good.
