John Milton #20

Bulletproof

Rate this book
John Milton thought he could run forever. He was wrong.

For years, former secret service agent and trained killer John Milton thought he could outrun his past, his demons and his enemies. His enemies had other ideas.

Captured and imprisoned by the organisation he once worked for, Milton must do one last job in exchange for his freedom. Bullheaded billionaire fixer Tristan Huxley is brokering a weapons deal between Russia and India. He needs protection and he wants Milton by his side. Huxley has trusted Milton with his life before but these days his world is more decadent and his enemies more dangerous, in ways that nobody could ever have suspected.

Finally, the man who thought he’d never be forgiven has the chance to wipe the slate clean, once and for all. But is it really a case of no more running for Milton? Can the Group be trusted to keep their word and let him go? And who is it that really needs protecting?

After all, nobody is bulletproof, not even John Milton.

Mark Dawson was born in Lowestoft and grew up in Manchester and Chicago. He has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, "The Art of Falling Apart" and "Subpoena Colada" have been published in multiple languages.

He is currently writing two series. Soho Noir is set in the West End of London between 1940 and 1970. The first book in the series, "The Black Mile", deals with the (real life but little known) serial killer who operated in the area during the Blitz. "The Imposter" traces the journey of a criminal family (think The Sopranos in austerity London and you'd be on the right track).

The John Milton series features a disgruntled special agent who aims to help people to make amends for the terrible things that he has done. Mark, as a child of the 80s, will freely admit that he watched a lot of The Equalizer in his youth.

John Milton has been running for an awful long time, from the Group he killed for, from the past he can't erase. He really thought they would never find him, but here we are, captured and lying in a cell by the folks he once worked for. The Group has a 'deal' for him, work for them protecting a billionaire he once dealt with, and his record would be expunged. He would be released, clean, no more running...Ya and he believes in Santa Claus too!!
This thrilling adventure let's us see parts of Milton's thinking and life we have not been close enough to notice before. We also actually see the workings of the Group 15 and Control, as the current Number 1 works with Milton on this case, through twists and turns that change plans completely and have him seeing Milton in a different light. A suspenseful adventure with John Milton, by an author who has taken this character through years of growth, changes, and suspense with no sign of stopping now!
I received an ARC from the author and I offer You my honest thoughts and feelings in this review.

*Thrilling*

Well the day that was only a matter of time is here. John Milton has been running for quite sometime now. This is when the current Number One captures John the ex Number One. He is locked up in a windowless cell awaiting a bullet in the head. You do not walk away from The Elite group that work for the government ‘Group Fifteen’ you know too much and become a liability.

John chose to run as he had enough bloodshed. He may not always be the strongest or youngest but his resourcefulness is hard to match, that’s what makes him dangerous.

Finally the cell door opens and and accepting his fate he is lead to see ‘Control’. The head of the group. To his amazement John is given an assignment. Preempting that they expect him to kill again on their behalf he flatly refuses. This job is to protect someone from his past, this person Tristan Huxley has his own security in place but the deal he is about to strike is sensitive. So the only way he will agree is if Milton is on the team. This job will mean a clean slate for Milton or is it?

This time you have the current and ex number one working together. How will that go down? Huxley is a despicable man in the first order and he has done heinous crimes all covered up. When John was drinking he vaguely noticed a thing, Tristan is about to get a different John and there will be fallout……

John Milton at his absolute best

For the twentieth book, Mark has upped his game and given us the book we've been waiting for ever since The Cleaner. After the shock ending of the last book, John Milton is working with Group Fifteen under duress, the carrot being his slate wiped clean. A recalcitrant billionaire has insisted on John's protection and Milton realises it's either that or a bullet in the back of his head.
Seeing John working side by side with the current Number One, Björn Thorsson, is fascinating because John has left egg on Thorsson's face in each of their previous encounters in the last few books. Thorsson has his own demons, as you will know if you read the Group Fifteen novella, Little Sister, and they come back to haunt him in this book. Turns out, he and Milton may not be so dissimilar after all.
The themes running through all the Milton books continues, John battling his alcoholism while trying to even out his ledger, and while this assignment tests his sobriety severely, it also gives him a chance to help past, current and possible future victims but at what personal cost?
As always, the story kept me on my toes and the ending was unexpected but hugely satisfying. We may be up to twenty books already but the partnership of Mark Dawson and John Milton, like Milton himself, shows no signs of failing or falling short. Long may they continue.

Thanks to a few days off, i smashed through this story quicker than usual. Im disappointed that i finished it so quick as i wanted to savour it but it's testament to Mark's writing and the story itself that it gripped me and wouldnt let go.

Milton is back working under his old employer, under duress of course, and has to find a way to revolve the situation. Does he? You'll have to read to find out. The story is telling of people who have so much money that they think they can get away with anything, the people in the upper echelons of the world who think they are untouchable. Milton is the hero we all need.

Inspiration has obviously been taken from real world events over the past couple of years and when you read the book, you will spot the similarities straight away. The phrase "they'll kill me and make it look like suicide" cemented my suspicions. Even that phrase alone, you can probably guess...

Another superb read. I don't know how Mark does it (well, i do...he's a great writer) but 20 books into the series and every single one is simply brilliant.

I love Mark Dawson's books. I have read all 20 of the ones about John Milton and also read his other series. I like them all but I love John Milton the most. He is so intense. The books are hard to put down.

Twenty books in and they are still captivating and thrilling. Amazing.......

This book takes off immediately from the ending of the last book and has John Milton in captivity under Group 15. After all of his running, he has finally been caught. He (and if I'm being honest, me too) truly expected that they were going to just shoot him and be done with it. Fortunately, he has been specifically requested by name for a mission by a person that the British government has deemed "important". Without going into spoilers, let me say that I was not sure how this was going to end up.

The story itself is taken right from the actual headlines and it is a kind of knock off on the Jeffrey Epstein saga. What I think I loved most of all was that we got the opportunity to see how far John has come from his days with the Group. He may have not been the BEST person in the past, but he is doing his utmost best to be a better man now and he will not stand by when innocents are being hurt.

I listened to most of this on audio and as usual, the narration ( which was done by David Thorpe) was spot on. He has been the narrator for this series and I have come to expect his voice while listening.

As usual, John Milton does not disappoint. Also, it seems as if there was a set up for another book.

Looks like there is going to be a book 21. Can't wait.

Another exciting read that finished too quickly while we are in lockdown here. I don't believe that there are 20 books in the John Milton series, time just flies by when you read them. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed each and every one, they are so involving and exciting with twists and turns in the plots while Milton tries to right the wrongs he has caused in his service. Interesting to see a few odd head scratcher words that I have never seen before, thank goodness for Kindle Dictionary.

My only criticism is please Mark - you are a wordsmith - use words and do not follow the modern way of using anacronyms, they mostly do not show in the dictionary and vary from country to country. Don't expect readers to learn from the first sighting either it is really frustrating going back over the text looking for meanings. You may need an IEP on this or perhaps PD. (Please look these up to see the dilemma.)
Looking forward to more of Mark Dawson's books they provide a great amount of interest and excitement - I only wish they were a bit longer as I am a fast reader and the just run out too quickly.

Thanks Mark

Milton isn't Bulletproof - Neither is the Client that he Insisted Group 15 Use to Protect Him

Milton's John Smith legend is burned, so is his newest, Eric Blair. Group 15 has finally caught up with him, using the new #1, the big Icelander, Thorsson to bring him in. Now in a cell, Control tells him their client, one of his former clients and party friend, billionaire, Tristan Huxley insists that if Smith isn't on the job to protect him from the terrorist group, ISI, then no one from the Group will be either. Working as a government mole the billionaire makes deals with powerful "friends.". They need him to broker a deal between the Russians and the Indian Government. If John does so, his file will be rescinded and his slate wiped clean. Milton k was its a lie but it gets him out of a cell and back into the world where money tslks, the booze flows and the young women and men are play things of the rich. Milton knows this is both dangerous to his life, the client and his sobriety. Does he even have a choice? Read Bulletproof to find out!

A Compelling Turn Of Events For John Milton

Control wants John to do just one more job for them and then he can walk away a free man. A client he worked with before, Tristan Huxley, has insisted John is the only person he will consider to keep him safe until he completes his negotiations with Russia and India. Control isn’t happy, John isn’t happy, but there is no other solution to please this man and the compact is too important to not cooperate with him. John knows he can’t trust control but there is no other way out so he reluctantly agrees, hoping he can just disappear again after the job is done. It turns out to be worse than he thought.

Another compelling story from Mark Dawson that turns out to be a lot more complex than it first appears. John must work with Bjorn Thorsson, who has, in the past, vowed to kill him. He also has to weave through the idiosyncrasies of the client, who has some very weird proclivities that John must work around to complete his mission. A great addition to your Mark Dawson/John Milton library.

I have read and enjoyed every one of the books in the series and yet I think I received more pleasure from Bulletproof than the previous 19!

John continues his escape from his past and the ghosts of his past actions as a member of The Group.

Now Control has offered him a deal - help protect a billionaire, whom John had encountered years ago, and he is a truly free man no longer pursued by his former employer who wants him eliminated. Just one more assignment.

Can it be true or is this London’s version of “If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.”?

We also learn more about John and delve deeper into his character, his past, and his struggles to atone for his previous self by helping others.

John even strikes a relationship with Number One.

A great book.

I found myself identifying with Mr Milton in some ways.

As I said, even after nineteen books, the twentieth is captivating and the main character continues to develop.

ENJOY…

Bulletproof. Mark Dawson

John Milton has finally been detained or rather taken into custody by his old covert employer. He was tired of running and let his guard down. He expects it's the end of the road. He has created too many problems for them, a covert agency that handles problems M15 and M16 are unable too. Extreme prejudice.Surprisingly the new control offers him one last job and his slate wiped clean. He agrees to protect a man he once was assigned to protect. What he uncovers is the very brazen and utterly brutal forms of blackmail the man has used against very powerful and influential people. He now has a price on his head. What ensues is an extremely fast paced action packed thriller of mega proportions with a surprise ending. An excellent read!!! Enjoyed immensely!!

My introduction to John Milton, the shadowy and low-key British hitman, trying to forget his past and suppress his demons was Book 20 of a series that’s 24 books and counting. I look forward to catching up with Milton in the future. Bulletproof starts with a simmer and ends with the gas on high. Milton has been hiding from his former organization and is promised his freedom after one more operation. He agrees and guards a very wealthy man with all the expected accoutrements, including private jets, a private island, beautiful women and a pending missile deal between India and Russia that will make him even richer. His high-flying lifestyle puts him in the crosshairs of a number of organizations and personal enemies. John Milton plays a skillful game of protecting a man who turns out to be his own worst enemy in a fast-moving, very clever plot.

Another great John Milton book

This book is similar to Epstein, the rich guy who took girls and men to his islands and hotels and homes and abused them. And he was hung or killed in his cell in New York City. No one knows if he was killed or if he committed suicide. He was very rich why would he commit suicide? This book is extremely timely, it was a bit slow in the beginning as the characters were being built. I am very glad Mark Dawson saw fit to write about a rich billionaire abusing his wealth on young girls and men.. a great read and makes us all think about what the world is all about, and things that we don't know that are happening around the world. I just hope somewhere there is someone like John
Milton doing things that need to be done.

My favorite of favorites

Having read most of Jack Reacher's adventures along Noah Wolf ,Dirk Pitt, and several other series heroes, John Milton has been my favorite and one who has kept me up reading until the wee hours of many mornings. Bulletproof is very probably my favorite of all Milton's escapades! To that point, I'm doing something I don't believe I have ever done before and that's giving a 5 star rating to a book. I've given four and a half before, but as I'm sure almost no author is completely satisfied that they 'be written the perfect. No matter how well the characters are developed or how the subplots support the story or twisting the story line keeps the reader on their toes. This book following the previous did all that for me. Thank you Mr Mark Dawson!

Another John Milton and another cracking good read from Mark Dawson. After what for me were a couple of not so good instalments Milton was back as good as ever in Never Let Me Down Again and again he’s his awesome self in Bulletproof. Lots of characters to get to grips with initially but they soon all fall into place.
Milton is back working for The Group, one last job to gain a clean slate and to enable him to stop running, but sure where would the fun be in that? Again Mark borrows from reality with a hard hitting plot that’s very timely. Forming some unlikely friendships Milton deals out his own unique form of retribution. Brilliant stuff which I read virtually in one sitting.

Is it possible that these books just keep getting better with each one? There's been such a development of both the character, writing style and tightness of plot with every outing that John Milton makes. Mark Dawson has taken the recent world events and attitude changes to enmesh them in the story - our hero is definitely taking the moral high ground even as an ex-government-assassin. An easy, enjoyable read that romps through the pages as John Milton's predicament from the last book is both resolved and made more complex (but "Bulletproof" is also suitable for a 'straight' read without the back story, although I suspect if this is your first you'll be seeking out the earlier novels.)

Mark Dawson writes another great storyline involving John Milton, former British Military and Group 15 assassin. Dawson continues to turn-out twenty exciting novels about John Milton’s life after leaving Group 15. Having read all twenty novels, I can honestly say that John Milton is one of my favorite heroes who continues to evolve from a really bad guy to the hero guy as he tries to escape his former life.
I look forward to the next novel with John Milton. I have made this comment after reading every John Milton novel, either Netflix or Amazon Prime need to buy the rights to these novels and develop a made for TV series using each novel for a season.

Chilling Suspense

John Milton takes on a simple assignment that his ex-government bosses say will wipe his records clean and release him from their ever-reaching clutches. However John cannot turn a blind eye to the layers of crime the man he's protecting has built around him and knowing he cannot trust the government controllers to keep their bargain digs deep into those layers until he finds the unacceptable truth and plans his own retribution. Well written as always by Mark Dawson, Book 20 of this series is as fresh as any debut book full of suspense and intrigue keeping us teetering on the edge of our seats.

Another great adventure for the ex assassin

After 20 books you’d think that there would be a couple of books which weren’t quite as good as the others. But not so. If anything the books get better with each one published. Mark Dawson is a master storyteller, creating stories with more twists and turns than a roller coaster. No more so than bulletproof which sees the captured John Milton back working for group fifteen. A billionaire deal maker becomes the target of enemy agents and Milton is assigned to protect him. But along the way Milton learns some things about the person he’s protecting which sees him take justice into his own hands. Well worth a read.

John Milton has been captured by Group 15! How will this end? Bulletproof by Mark Dawson is the latest adventure with "John Smith" or more recently "Eric Blair" will Control order his death or will he wiggle himself out of this situation? Well, he gets an opportunity to redeem himself but it comes with a steep price. Protecting a businessman he once garded before he got sober. Now he sees the man for what he really is and that takes this book on a dark journey. What will Milton do? Also, how will Group 15 respond? If this has made you curious then get the book read and enjoy while you find out. Mark Dawson has once again written a great book.

Fantastic Read!

Another awesome book in the John Milton series! I have read all 19 books before this one and Bulletproof does not disappoint. It is filled with realistic action, characters and suspense!! Mark Dawson continues to develop the character of John Milton through every book, and he does an amazing job of doing that and keeping the story new and fresh. This book (and the others in this series) can be read individually, but I think they are best read in order.
If you are looking for a great, realistic, action based series with authentic characters and minimal romantic fluff this is the series for you. I am already looking forward to book 21!!

Good thriller.

A good thriller that has John Milton while on the run brought back into the fold of the security services on the insistence of a client who knew him years ago. While the client wanted Milton’s protection to keep him safe while he got a big weapons contract between two countries signed sealed and delivered Milton discovers information on the client that changes his opinion of him. This change coupled with the threat from hostile agents intent on kidnapping the client takes Milton on a journey of trying to right previous wrongs of the client while keeping him alive to achieve his objective.

Control has Milton in a cell so small he can barely turn around. Huxley is a multi-billionaire who is about to sign a mega deal and thinks he is bulletproof. The Group doesn't agree, but the only way he will agree to additional security is if they include Milton in the deal. Milton knew him back when he was a mere multi-millionaire. Turns out to be a good idea on both sides. However, Huxley's real life does not mesh with his public persona and that creates all sorts aggravation for Milton. Looks like redemption isn't in the cards. Action packed, as usual.

Brilliant. Brilliant. What else can I say. I await every book and they just keep getting better and better.

Mark Dawson can put a story together like no other. I have a number of special author's, but Mark is the best. Each story is so well written. It keeps me on edge from the first page until the last. I just don't want them to end.
I have every book written by this author and I hope there will be many more to come. STAY WELL AND KEEP SAFE MARK. I look forward to all your future books no matter which hero you give us next time.

Based on a bit of truth?

Milton has always been my favourite Dawson series. I've watched the character evolve. The author likes to adapt fiction with a snatch of real events just like the poisoning in Salisbury. In this installment we have a clear connection to the corrupt elite, a private island those with too much money and no morals and abuse. Ring any bells? Topped themself in a cell. Brilliant to see a bit of payback. Unlike the real world where corruption is rife and money talks. Best read yet.

Exciting

The best Milton book yet. John is back in the mix of things he had hoped never to be in again. The only way out is to join up with the Group headed by Control who had him caged until he agreed to help them. He was promised his freedom if he did this one last job. Can he really trust them? It’s what he’s always wanted, his freedom. So much excitement with so much action while he conducts his own side job at the same time. Keeps you turning the pages just to see where it ends. He knows where he’s going next. We just need to wait for the next book so we can know too.
