A modern-day thriller of the Book of Job. As one reader put it, Healed reads "as if it were written by both Steven King and M. Night Shyamalan."

Ever feel like the world is against you? Trust me, Job can relate. Three years ago, he found God. His faith soared and soon after, troubles tumbled over him. Like an avalanche, pain and strife became his constant companions. Isn’t faith supposed to rid you of agony? What’s a man to do? When the end is near and everyone you love has abandoned you, will you cling to your faith or renounce it?

Healed is a modern-day retelling of Job that packs a wallop. From the first page to the last, this thriller short story had me in its clutches. If you’re thinking Healed will be a nice Christian story, you’d be dead wrong. Dean Skinner takes a different approach in order to reach readers of today. There is harsh language (multiple f-bombs), adult situations, and violent triggers that might be unsuitable for some. Healed is a reboot of the story of Job from the bible and it’s so well done, I couldn’t put the book down. The main character goes through a lot of turmoil and his full range of emotions grabs the reader by the throat. The emotional narration is vividly portrayed. The plot is perfectly paced and complete, which is impressive for a short story. Dean Skinner is a masterful writer, and his writing style is succinct and wholly addictive. Fans of Ted Dekker will be elated with Healed. If you’re a short story reader, you’ll enjoy Healed. If you love thrillers with a twist, pick up Healed. Highly recommend!

This modern re-telling of the biblical story of Job for me was a bit long winded as we are taken through the long list of maladies that have fallen on him since finding God.
Like the biblical version Healed by Dean Skinner is a story of faith and trust. The author makes it very easy to sympathize with the main character (and his dog) and does a decent job of also including the arch villain Satan into the story line.
The story is not badly written and it is well paced, for me the real gem of the story is the Epilogue. The epilogue does a beautiful job of giving us the prequel of the story's characters. The who, how and where of the genesis. The epilogue has the potential to make an excellent prequel to Healed.

Healed

This is a different kind of book. The language in the beginning of this book almost made me put the book away for good. I decided to give it a second chance so I read on, and I'm glad I did because it turns to good read. I liked it and actually enjoyed the second half of the book. Good solid characters and a great ending.

Healed
By
Dean Skinner

My Review:
Dean Skinner's Healed is about the man's journey of fighting his own internal battle. This novella revolves around a guy Job who is the victim of an ailment. He is so tired of fighting from his own demons. He doesn't get a single day rest, a single day without ailment. If his one ailment goes, another welcomes itself on the same day.

There are other characters also that readers will get to meet in the story. Healed makes us realize how an ailment can affect our mind, body and soul. When we are ill, we can't think of anything else. We only focus on our illness and our suffering. Like Job, the moment I feel connected to God, I start hoping that now all my pain should go away.

Healed is a well written story. Language used in the book is lucid. I was easily able to follow the entire story. Plot is nice and the pace of the story is fast throughout. This book will keep you hooked till the last page. This is a quick read that one couldn't put down without finishing it. Story is so good that I am definitely going to read other short stories by Dean.

My Rating: 5/5

Life can be a real pain in the ass sometimes, but especially for Job in "Healed". A fun lunchtime read that will leave you thinking does the "CEO" have a plan for each of us (deterministic) or do we have the power within us to control our own destiny, to heal others, and be healed ourselves (free will). For all the reviewers upset about profanity in the prose, I believe the author is simply attempting to be modern, raw, and real with his main character. Recommended.

A very powerful re-telling of the story of Job but in the modern era. Skinner's imagery is superb as he manages to capture the physical and emotional agony of Job. Job navigates being in constant inexplicable pain during his day to day life and his struggles with his faith as a result. The characters are compelling and believable. The language raw but beautifully evokes emotion. The reader really feels for Job. The twist at the end was the cherry on top of the story, pulling it all together and allowing the reader to see what makes the pain worth it. Skinner's most compelling story yet and an amazing read all around. Anyone looking for a unique short story should check Healed out!

I love reading novellas. Recently I got my hands on the book Healed penned by the author Dean Skinner. This is the first book that I have read by Dean.

Story features a man Job who found God three years ago. He thought that after finding God, his pain would go away. He will be healed. But that didn't happen. In fact, he is suffering from one ailment and another. He wants a week without sickness at least. He is so tired of bearing all this pain.

Job is having a crimson rash that
starts in the center of his anus and eventually crawls up to the undercarriage of his testicles. He felt the urge to scratch there every now and then. Health is Wealth. It's true.

Language used in this novella is easy to read and uses mature words. So, this novella is for adult readers. Cover photo of the book looks nice and the title is suitable. Writing style is amazing and the narration is smooth so I enjoyed reading this book.

Now, I am curious to read more of his work. If you love reading short stories then go ahead with Skinner's work without any second thoughts.

A lesson on life when life is broken.

Dean Skinner does it again, and his latest book, "Healed", is his best yet. The book simply captivates; haunting imagery depicts familiar and relatable struggles that turn into glimpses of hope and healing. A worthy read for anyone who questions their purpose in a broken world.

This is my second book my Dean Skinner and I really am loving the way he writes! He really gives us intriguing plots that are thought-provoking, while still being gripping. I also ADORE when books have epilogues that really throw you for a loop!

And adventure of the mind and the heart

Healed takes you through a journey of another man, yet with yourself. One may not identify with every scene or situation… But we can identify with the feelings of both joy and despair as shared in Healed.

At the end of the day… At the end of our lives… we will have made the choices that defined our reality.

In life, we can look through the lens of love or through the lens of fear—no matter the situation. It’s our choice.

BTW, Dean has an uncanny ability to relish in the use of F bombs without it being offensive. Secretly, as a reader, I wish I had the courage to use that word so expertly.

Full disclosure: I know and am a friend of Dean’s. One could say that makes me bias. It does. I learn more about Dean through his writing every time I read it… and I’m proud to call him a friend.

This book says it’s a modern-day retelling of the Book of Job. Well, after reading it, I can tell you it isn’t. There are some parallels, sure, and the characters definitely reference Job. But there are just too many things missing for it to be considered a “proper” retelling.

It’s about a man who gave his life to Christ three years prior. Ever since, he’s suffered many diseases and complaints. They’re nothing serious or life threatening; they’re just constant, painful, embarrassing, and irritating.

He’s not a fan of Catholicism, but he has a friend, a Catholic priest, whom he regularly meets for coffee, and they engage in light-hearted banter about Catholicism and Christianity.

Although it’s not what it says on the tin, it’s very good, and I identified with it a lot. I’d highly recommend reading it if you’re a Christian going through tough times in your life. There’s a great twist at the end, too.

As a Christian, I’ve never considered Job an inspirational or motivational story, and neither does the protagonist. At one point, he jokes maybe he IS, in fact, the subject of some sick wager between God and Satan. But he never really believes it. The story prompted me to go off and re-read the Book of Job, though, and I think it might just do that for you, too.

It’s just a pity about the writing. It’s a bit “all over the place”, full of run-on sentences, and missing, misspelt, and misused words (“Site” instead of “sight”, for example).

I could ignore those, and still give this story a four-star review. I urge you to look past them, too. Another thing that’s pretty cool is it shows that Christians are all just regular people, like you and me, not even against dropping the odd F-bomb here and there... Aw, who am I kidding? There are LOADS!

I whipped through this book in one sitting. I enjoyed it but have no idea what it is about. I think that mulling about it and rereading will start to enlighten me.

Different

This was a,very different story. I cannot decide whether I like it or not. Very different than what I normally read, thus the lower rating. It wasn't a bad story, but very deep. Refreshing change from my normal resd.

Interesting

A vague, surreal story with a slight hint of spiritual warfare invoked in tale.
A take on the Biblical story of Job with scriptural passages yet in a modern day setting

This a very short story which can be read in a hour. I've read it once and think I need to read again. I'm not sure I got out of it all that I should have so may try it again at some point to see if I get more insight. I liked it enough and since it is short I will probably do it.

This was a modern retelling of the Book of Job. It captured my interested and used language of today. I think it also goes to show God's powers and how He uses sinners to do His work.

𝑻𝒊𝒕𝒍𝒆: Healed
𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓: Dean Skinner

𝑴𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘:
Dean Skinner's latest work is Healed. It's a novella written in 48 pages. This is the re-telling of the story of Job with a modern touch. Job found Jesus. Three years ago, he was saved by God. Today if he is alive, it's all because of God. Job is very much tired of his ailment. He wants a bit of peace. He cries out to God saying that he is tired of fighting this battle that is full of pain. He wants to be healed. But will his prayers be answered?

One day Job was having lunch with Father Harry who told Job that he has a good relationship with CEO i.e. God. Father Harry told Job that he will put a good word in for him. Grab a copy of this novella to know what is gonna happen next in the story.

This is a short story so one would be able to finish it in a single sitting. Pace of the story is fast and I didn't feel bored anytime while reading it. I could somewhat relate to Job as I also don't stay pretty well even a single day. Also, I suffered a year long allergy. We all have so many demons to deal with in our real life. This is a book worth reading. Dean has done great work in this novella.

3.5 rounded down, because I was a bit confused near the end. The original Job has a happy ending, but I wasn't real sure about this version. Glad the author added the epilogue at the end.

This is a retelling of the story of the biblical Job, and you realize if you don't have your health, you don't have much. Christian fiction.

A quick read for free for Kindle from Amazon.
