Ever Yours, Annabelle

Rate this book
She’s not one for half measures
Lady Annabelle Huxley believes anything worth doing is worth doing boldly, and that includes adoring Robert Conrad. As a girl, she chased him with reckless abandon, and he always rescued her when she pushed too far … until the day rescuing her cost him everything—and lost her the boy she loved as no other.

He’s not the boy she remembers
The accident that shattered his body and his future left Robert Conrad fighting a battle only the hardest men win. After seven hellish years, even his tough soldier of a grandfather thinks he needs a wife to “civilize” him. But the season’s sole temptation is Annabelle, no longer a worshipful girl, now a siren with a womanly laugh, sarcastic mouth, and curves to make an uncivilized man sweat.

Love this powerful is not so easily broken
Her habit of chasing trouble hasn’t changed. Neither has his driving need to protect her. So, when a scandalous secret draws danger too close, he’ll wield his weapons ruthlessly—blackmail, betrothal, seduction—to keep her safe once more. And when his strength is all that stands between her and a perilous abyss, she’s reminded why loving Robert Conrad has always been the hardest habit to break.

Reading romance novels came easily to Elisa Braden. Writing them? That took a little longer. After graduating with degrees in creative writing and history, Elisa spent too many years in “real” jobs writing T-shirt copy ... and other people’s resumes ... and articles about giftware displays. But that was before she woke up and started dreaming about the very unreal job of being a romance novelist. Better late than never.

Elisa lives in the Pacific Northwest, where you're constitutionally required to like the colors green and gray. Good thing she does. Other items on the "like" list include cute dogs, strong coffee, and epic movies. Of course, her favorite thing of all is hearing from readers who love her characters as much as she does.

This is mislabeled. It's not 0.5 novella. It's actually a whole novel, longer than some other "full" novels in this series.

I wanted to give this 5 stars I really did. But I simply can't. Everything started out so well, through even about 40%, but then the melodrama kicked in. It goes thusly:

* The H saved the h when she was 13 and he was 18 - it was an accident - and in the process he became a cripple. He sacrificed himself.
* He pushes her away by making her believe he hates her for ruining his plans - to be in the military, wrecked his body, etc. That it was her fault for always chasing after him and him always coming to the rescue when she gets in scrapes. (He does this BECAUSE he loves her and he doesn't want to burden her with being with an invalid, dragging her down with him into despair, etc.)
* 7 years later, they meet again. He wants to marry her now (bc his grandfather is pushing) when he sees her. She thinks it's punishment, some cruel joke to get back at her.

Instead of having a conversation like normal adults, one that makes sense, even if the explanation above is not entirely believable, the next 60% is spent drawing out this melodrama and introducing more of the h's scrapes incl. a killer whose motivation is really quite unclear.

I can't stand plot holes. Things this important that are the crux of the book drive me insane when they're unbelievable. In the end they finally have that adult convo and it literally took 2 paragraphs. DONE. So I wonder again why not at 40% and make it a true novella.

Therefore, 3.5 stars rounded down.

I would give this book 10 stars if I could - it was that good!

Lady Annabelle Huxley has loved Robert Conrad her entire life and is sure they are destined to marry and live happily ever after. Robert has always been her protector and her champion - saving her and defending her, always patient with her and calling her Bumblebee - she cannot imagine a life that doesn't include him. So when she panics at the thought of him dying in the war, her actions set into motion a tragedy of epic proportions. An accident that costs Robert his dreams and costs Annabelle her heart.

When Robert wakes after the accident and realizes his life has changed, he banishes Annabelle from his life. He remains friends with Annabelle's brother John, but refuses to let him speak her name. For the next seven years, Robert struggles to heal. He is a second son and lives with his grandfather, the Marquis of Mortlock. When his hopes of a military career are dashed, he takes over the estate management at his grandfathers urging, throwing himself into it almost to the exclusion of all else. But everything changes when his grandfather insists that Robert needs to find a wife. He sends him to London and tells him to heed the advice of his friend, The Dowager Marchioness of Wallingham, she will find him a wife. He goes and doesn't meet any woman who interests him, until he hears a voice that sparks something in him, he searches for the source and is desperate to see her face - but when he does, he is shocked to see Annabelle - his Bumblebee - but not the girl he knew 7 years ago, no, this Annabelle is a woman.

Annabelle has tried to live without Robert, she writes him letters that she never sends, has enlisted spies to keep her informed of his progress and tried to find another man that she could love. To distract herself, she draws and has turned it into a bit of a career - using gossip and turning them into amusing caricatures, which she sells to a publisher under a false name. Her life is not empty, but she not longer feels alive. When she sees Robert at the ball, it was like her heart started beating again. But she is still hurt and tells herself to keep her distance. However, Lady Wallingham has other ideas - she proposes that Annabelle help Robert find a wife!

What follows is a touching love story that will make you laugh, cry and sigh in equal measure. Wonderful characters, secrets, murder, steamy love scenes, amusing banter, tragedy and soul-mate love combine together in an amazing and unforgettable story that will stay with you long after the last word is read.
This is the prequel to the series, but doesn't have to be read first - in fact if you have been following the series, you will see many familiar faces!! I loved this book and cannot recommend it highly enough!!

I must march to the beat of a different drummer. I did NOT like this book. It started off with such a bang and could have gone so many directions. I dislike the reader (at the end of each word she raises her voice on each word). I don't know how to explain it, but not working for me. I bought this book as I liked her reading of book 4 and really enjoyed that story. In this book I don't care about either of the main characters. The I must continue to save the child from her actions has gotten old as she is now a woman and still getting into "scrapes". There is a connection between the H/h (Obsession actually comes to mind). The story consisted mainly of I love you more....no, I love you more with a dash of a villain who really was thrown in because...you just have to have one. Even though for most of the story he wasn't a part of it.

Quick pointers on my rating.
I was not as invested in these two characters in the second half of the book.
The beginning was sweet and sad.
But the middle dragged for me as the character development seemed to flatline.
Towards the end, the storyline and character development picked up a little.
I liked the heroine but the hero I struggled with at times.

⭐⭐
2 stars.

➕ What I liked :

Somewhat interesting secondary characters.

The hero was not a philanderer/womanizer.

Disability rep.

➖ What I disliked:

Repetitive character descriptions. (especially about the hero.)

A little too cringey. (The nickname the hero has for the heroine among other things.)

Too much miscommunications/misunderstandings and melodrama.

The heroine is too thoughtless/reckless.

Annoying heroine.

Annoying hero.

Clichéd main characters. (Stereotypical in both appearance/looks and personalities etc.)

Immature main characters. (They seem and act much younger than they are. Etc.)

Dragged.

The romantic build up was unconvincing and rushed. (even with their childhood past and connection etc.)

The chemistry and sexual tension needed more time/development and there needed to be more of an adult relationship established. ( Before the hero became obsessed with lust for the heroine.)

Anachronistic and believability/plausibility issues‎.
(How "free" the heroine was too run around and do more or less whatever she liked, without consequence from her parents etc. both as a child/teenager and as a young adult.)

Should I read in order?
Ideally yes, though this book could be read after the others in the series as it was written later. (This is the prequel novel for Braden’s Rescued from Ruin series)

Basic plot:
Robert returns to London to find a wife and meets Annabelle, who he thought was left in the past.

Give this a try if you want:
- Regency time period - 1816
- London setting
- unrequited love – from both!
- brother’s best friend
- disability rep – hero has a damaged leg that pains him and uses a cane
- artist heroine
- secret writer
- bit of a murder mystery but lots of character focus at the same time
- medium steam – 3 full scenes and some kisses
- hero wants a wife

Ages:
- I have notes that the heroine is 20, hero is 25 but this may have been in the prologue, which was 1809 (so for the main story, I’d guess about 27 for the heroine and 32 for the hero)

First line:

Lady Annabelle Huxley had loved Robert Conrad for an entire thirteen years of life, yet in all that time she had never imagined him naked.

My thoughts:
Ohhhhh this book just checked allllll my boxes I was in the mood for. I adore hero pursues, and when Robert gets his priorities straight with Annabelle I was absolutely swooning in his courting.

The tension in this one was soooo good to me. This was the first time I have listened to Mary Sarah as a narrator and she’s definitely my favorite (I was talking to someone else that said she has terrible narrator reviews! Well I’m here to say I love her!!!) Her heroine voice was perfect to me, but her hero voice as well I just adored. She does that growly whisper just so good (to me), and something about it reminded me of Captain Vane from Black Sails, who can read me a story ANY TIME.

Anyway, lots of longing and angst in this one and the sexual tension was so strong for me. I just adored these two so, so much. The suspenseful part I was on the edge of my seat. I was just rooting for these two the entire book and I adored the whole story. This will absolutely be a reread for me and is my favorite by Braden that I’ve read so far (Books .5, 1, 2, and 3 of Rescued from Ruin and book 1 of Midnight in Scotland). As I went through my bookmarks in the audio to actually write the review, I found myself just relistening to so many favorite parts. I just adored this book so much!

My only complaint, was there was a point towards the beginning of the book when Robert and Annabelle were reconnected and he thought

Warriors did not go hungry. Warriors saw what they wanted and fought to claim it.

but then we come to find he’s about to run away from London! He ends up staying, but this was the only part of the book that disappointed me 😆

I somehow missed this prequel when I read the Rescued From Ruin series, and I don't know whether to kick myself or be glad that I had one more Elisa Braden book left to read.

Plot Summary
Annabell Huxley has always loved her brother's best friend, Robert. A love that is all-consuming and everlasting. She is forever getting into scrapes & Robert is her knight, saving her, until one such scrape results in Robert getting badly hurt, almost dying and leaving him broken, in more ways than one. The accident broke Annabell's heart, but Robert's banishment of her has ripped her soul. 7 years later, they bump into each other only to realise that nothing has changed - Annabell still loves Robert, trouble still follows her and Robert, still has a desperate need to protect her. When a villain threatens Annabell's safety, Robert has no choice but to bind her to him forever, in matrimony. Will these two be able to keep things together that which has already once been torn asunder?

My Thougts
- I love Elisa Braden's writing, it is sublime. She can hold the reader's interest to the final page. The structure of the story is great, historically accurate, humorous and brimming with romance.
- Now, this story, in particular, was interesting but a little soft (I don't want to call it meh). The "Loving sibling's best friend/ best friend's sibling" trope has a lot of potential, as it allows the couple, the basis of having known each other for quite a while and makes the romance believable.
- Although the romance was supposed to be the central plotline, the hurt and the separation due to the accident became the primary focus. The why of it kept me hooked but the revelations came late and felt childish. The issue for me was as they grew older, they refused to evolve out of those childish notions, valid though they might have been.
- Now, the romance between these two was very soulful, almost spiritual in their togetherness (The Golden Thread connecting them metaphor). It may feel OTT for some, but I found it heartfelt and that is predominantly why I have rated this book high, definitely not because I am biased towards Ms Braden's writing (hehehe).
- The characters were exceedingly unique in their own right, but it comes as no surprise considering the author has sketched out so many different people in the many books in this series. If you have not read the other books from the series, this one acts as a good marker in introducing upcoming characters, if you have read it before, it was fun to revisit the other people, introduced in subsequent stories.
- The character development was slow and hence the pacing was off. The villain plot popped in and out infrequently and came gushing through at the final 20%, to me, it felt abrupt & rushed
- If you can buy into the insta-love, Robert & Annabell were an interesting couple, they clearly loved each other but the competition of "I love you more, no I love you most" was tedious. I am aware I am writing mixed feelings but what's a review if I cannot pen down my thoughts honestly.
- Annabell's letters were probably one of the most heartbreaking things I may have read, and Robert's replies later as a gift, were one of the most romantic things, so much so that my husband got an earful from me for never writing me a single damned letter when we were dating! The letters earned the book 1.5 stars extra!

Special Mentions
- The Dowager Marchioness of Wallingham, an ultra amazing character that ties this whole series together, her quips at the beginning of every chapter are insightful and hilarious.
- John Huxley, I don't rightly know why, but I loved him and was glad to read his story The Making of a Highlander

My Recommendation
It was a good prequel but felt like an afterthought, which it probably was. Having said that, the whole series is amazing and I highly recommend it. Parts of my review may sound misaligned with the rating, but I enjoyed reading the book immensely! Go crazy with Elisa Braden's work, you shall not be disappointed. As we speak, I am re-reading the entire series.

“I expect you to vex me. That’s what bumblebees do.”

Gahhh, this book! Elisa Braden delivers magic every single time! I love when a character pines or crushes on someone ever since they were a kid. Fast forward to when they’re grown consenting adults..bring on the heat!! This book delivered the spice, tension, and oh the angst. I loved seeing a young John Huxley from the Midnights in Scotland series.

Annabelle & Robert’s love was written in the stars from the start. All the feels.

Angsty story about the rarely seen elder sister. Loved the insights of the family's history, especially Jane's true character when she's with her family. I liked the H but found his reactions odd. I did like how he finally admitted his love and that she was the only one for him. It was well balanced with love, adventure and evil OM getting what he deserved.

Ever Yours, Annabelle is the prequel for the 'Rescued from Ruin' series written by Elisa Braden. Many aspects of this story seemed oddly familiar to me from previous reading sessions. However, after checking my Goodreads log and my personal reading log, it appears it was not from this specific book.

This series is intended for ***MATURE AUDIENCES ***

Be prepared to experience a gamut of experiences and emotions with this read, which includes, but are not limited to:

* Reckless Abandon
* Fierce Protectiveness
* Devoted Adoration
* Guilt and Regret
* Self-induced Deprivation
* Sorrowful Pain
* Leaked Secrets
* Harassing Blackmail
* Seduction
* Love and Laughter
* Happy Ever After

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

But the season’s sole temptation is Annabelle, no longer a worshipful girl.

It always amazes me the intolerable length of time some couples in a historical romance are able to wait before they act on their feelings. The story spans almost twenty years from their early childhood attraction and yet the yearning fire and devotion continue to burn brightly for both of these parties. This type of deep devotion and eternal patience is a lost art.

The cover on the book reflected an appropriate facade of what this couple might have looked like in their era. I can understand how it might allure readers interested in the category of this historical romance genre.

This is NOT a clean series. Those who actually prefer steamy to clean and sweet might not view it as flawed. Due to this aspect, I recommend it with reservations. If you prefer clean and sweet reads, avoid this book. It is not fair to an author when readers provide bad reviews about steamy scenes if they know they are included in advance. I have been guilty of this offense myself. It takes a lot of time and effort for an author to research and write each book. And there are readers who prefer the material included in this one to a clean and wholesome read. However, I actually prefer the latter. This does have steamy sex scenes, so if you like a sex-free book this is not it. If you enjoy steamy reads, jump into this book looking forward to plenty.

This book is able to stand on its own, but if you read them in order, you will be more familiar with some of the characters that carry over. Each story does include its own H.E.A., which is always a good way to conclude the adventure you have chosen to become acquainted with.

THOSE TWO...Oh my...So unstable...
I did not like this one.It Is always a hit or miss with Elisa Braden.I am trying to finish the whole series.I am not sure about her writing...There is something but many times it is not solid.Like this story.Too dramatic for no reason.I don't understand why Robert was not angry with Annabelle...I just didn't buy the whole "I sent you away because I loved you" he could have just been angry and get the story built from there and Annabelle?She loves him he asks her to marry her and she is like "Aw no I cannot".Is she bipolar or something.The whole book felt waaay too forced to create a story out of nothing.And drama for 0 reason 😑 A bit of a disappointment.Aw I almost forgot.Robert had a cane but it feels like he was sooo normal in everything.That's where you should have invested in being dramatic!He has a disability and yet it felt like meh ok let's just put it there for story's sake.Stacy Reid is amazing when it comes to describing heroes (with disabilities) emotionally and physically.I would have loved for that to be more realistic.For him not to act like an A-male predator.Wtf?
Hope what is left of the series is better?

I picked this one up after seeing a read along on bookstagram and I'm so glad I did! It's my first book by Elisa Braden and I devoured it! Side note - I'm not sure why this is labeled as #0.5 in the series. Readers might see the series numbering and believe it's a novella or short prequel that can be skipped, when really it's a full length novel.

Ever Yours, Annabelle starts off so heartbreakingly, but it sets the stage for some epic pining and longing. My heart hurt so badly for Annabelle and Robert and everything they both endured. In some ways their connection as children was a bit unsettling, but I also loved that their souls recognized something in the other. Were their actions frustrating? Yes. Would pretty much everything been solved by a simple discussion? Also yes. Did I fall madly and deeply in love with them? Absolutely. Robert was such a delicious stern brunch daddy - super grumpy and fiercely protective, but such a total softie for his bumblebee. I loved how steadfast he was and that once he saw Annabelle again, he was all in completely. The ending drama with Lord Mortlock felt unnecessary though and I wish that plot line had been left out entirely. The novel wrapped up beautifully though and I loved how Annabelle and Robert came full circle. The epilogue left my heart so happy and I definitely want to read the rest of the books in the series. I also need to find out if anyone ever captures John Huxley's heart. ;)

Tropes: brother's best friend, epistolary, childhood friends to lovers, second chance-ish, touch her and die, pining, stern brunch daddy, opposites attract, forced proximity

CW: use of cane due to injury from a near fatal accident/fall (past), murder, gun violence, threats to safety, physical and sexual assault (secondary character), death of loved one, grief

I was pretty excited when this prequel came out- another book in this excellent series! Yay!! And it was a bit of a tear-jerker, I have to say.

The underlying thread in this story seems to be guilt. Annabelle cannot overcome her guilt that she caused the horrific damage to Robert's leg by behaving in her usual impetuous fashion, even though she was just a child at the time. And Robert has felt endless guilt about how he brutally excised her from his life after it happened, event though his motives were pure. (He refuses to let her saddle herself with the damaged man he is just because she feels she owes him.)

Yet there is also the sweetness that these two are simply meant for each other, and have loved each other almost all their lives. The letters that Annabelle writes over the years to a man who will never read them (she doesn't post them) are charming and heart-breaking. His gesture at the end is just perfect.

Under pressure from his grandfather, who has watched Robert work his arse off on the estate and would like to see him settled and with an heir before he dies, Robert goes to London to seek a wife. And sees Annabelle again for the first time in seven years.

In the meantime, Annabelle has put her sketching talents to good use and has been having her satirical caricatures published in a gossip paper, the Informer. Problem is, if the ton finds out who has been ridiculing them, her reputation will be shot.

So it's Robert to the rescue (The series IS called "Rescued from Ruin", after all!) I loved the incorporation of other plot threads from later books into this one. Knowing all the characters so well made it seem very real- like recalling old friends. In this instance, the saga of Atherbourne and Lady Victoria plays out at the same time.

As usual, Lady Wallingham is at her meddling best. She teases Robert with tidbits about Annabelle's many suitors (there aren't really any, because she has never made an effort to attract anyone) and arranges for Annabelle to assist Robert with his search for a wife. When Robert resists, insising that he is leaving London, she plays her trump card: his old, ill grandfather will be most disappointed. He must return with a wife.

Annabelle refuses to hep him so he follows her. everywhere. He is like a dog wit a bone. It's kinda cute- not stalkerish because, after all, he toldher he would follow her...

This was a charming story, even when I wanted to smack Robert's stubborn head. When Annabelle says:
"Ha! That would be the first thing you say to me, wouldn't it?" She lowered her voice to mimic his 'Have you lost your mind?' Hmmph. A fine way to end a seven-year pout." I thought- exactly!

It didn't move me quite as much as the letter that Sarah's father wrote to her in Desperately Seeking a Scoundrel but still, a fine, emotional end to an intriguing series.

3.75 stars Annabelle and Robert. Loved each other as children. Robert is best friends with her brother. He loves Annabelle in a "soul" way versus Annabelle in a crush way in their youth. Loved her nickname, Bumblebee. This one has letter writing, interesting side characters, and an epilogue.

I love the idea of prequels and this one is the BOMB!! I have read the whole "Rescued from Ruin" Series and this story is just as stunning! I was hooked from the first paragraph. Annabelle and Robert have known each other their whole lives. Robert is her brother's best friend and has been keeping Annabelle safe from her wild escapades. She follows Robert and her brother everywhere even though her brother keeps telling her she is a nuisance and wants her to leave them alone. Annabelle is in love with Robert and someday they will marry and they will live happily ever after. The story opens up when she is 13years old and Robert is 18, being a second son he has joined the Army and will be leaving soon. She is spying on Robert and her brother swimming and her eyes are glued to Roberts magnificent physique. She is spotted and tries to run so she won't get in trouble, but she slips and Robert is there to save her as usual, but this time the consequences of her actions leave Robert severely injured and will not be able to go in the Army now.

It takes years for Robert to heal as he works on his Grandfather's estate. When his Grandfather starts bugging him about finding a wife he gives in and goes to London for the Season. When he sees Annabelle for the first time in 7 years all the feelings they have for each other come rushing back. He wants no one but Annabelle. She is wary and doesn't know what to make of Robert's intentions. This is a story that is filled with pain, anguish, regrets, and sorrow, that will take Robert and Annabelle on a journey that will take them to a place where they have never been before. It will test their strength and the love that they feel for each other.

I laughed and cried while reading this poignant love story. The sex scenes are steamy. This book is an emotional roller coaster that will leave you wanting more. I recommend this and all of Elisa's books. You will not be disappointed.

Eh... not bad, but not memorable. The heroine's been in love with the boy next door forever, until she's the unwitting architect of his destruction; he in turn banishes her from his sight until years later, when they reconnect because she's in danger.

This wasn't really as angsty as I expected it to be and I skimmed a lot, but kudos to the author for maintaining period-appropriate attitudes for the hero. At one point he states that wives should come to their husbands innocent, and at first I desperately wanted her to ask him why he thought the same shouldn't apply to him, but for a book set in the 1810s this is a very fair attitude.

3 stars. This book is both good and bad at times. I loved the beginning, but some of the later interactions and arguments between the hero & heroine were just too stupid to bare.

This is the story of Annabelle and Robert. Robert is best friends with Annabelle's older brother, and spent a lot of time following the two boys around. The story starts with Annabelle at 13 years old, spying on then 18 year old Robert and her brother swimming in a river. She's careless and her actions lead to an accident that leaves Robert injured. He banishes her from his life, and spends the next 7 years ignoring her existence - while working on his grandfather's estate. At this point, his grandfather has grown ill, knows that he will not have much more time, and insists that Robert needs to marry. Robert is sent to London for the season, were he sees Annabelle again and is instantly attracted to her. He essentially forces her to marry him - but she doesn't understand his motives after all the time he spent hating her. There's a lot of back and forth between them before they get their HEA.

This book contains A LOT OF MISCOMMUNICATION... one of my least favorite plot devices. Annabelle is always assuming the worst of Robert's actions and intentions. They also argue about the stupidest things at times - like who loves who more. Annabelle also makes bad decisions frequently, putting herself and others in danger. I didn't like her character because she often couldn't think beyond her own whims.

Overall, this book was fine. The good parts were really good (especially the beginning which made me shed a tear). I'm continuing the series... hoping for better heroines going forward.

Safety is fine; hero and heroine initially met as children...hero didn't see heroine in a sexual light until they reconnected as adults. She was always in love with him, even through the years of their separation. He had been with some women through the years of their separation and before, but he wasn't a manwhore. No others once the present day story begins - although there is some jealousy caused by OM.

I really enjoyed this second-chance romance, especially the first half. The chapters starting with lovely, witty and touching letters evoked such longing it was such a special touch in the book.The writing was really engaging and detailed. A tormented and posessive hero and a bright and independent heroine led to some smoldering passion and lots of heated tension, conflict, and heavy dialogue. It was a unique story, I felt, as it really explored the psychology behind the actions of someone who has been injured and re-evaluating their place in the world. Robert was definitely a conflicted, very passionate character. I liked how creative, strong-willed, and feisty Annabelle was.There was a lot of problem and mystery solving towards the end of the book. I really enjoyed this one and look forward to continuing with the rest of the series.

Re-read- 3/23
I enjoyed it much more this time around. This is a fated mates, childhood friends to lovers, second chance prequel to the Rescued From Ruin series. It's a great start to the series even though I believe it was written later and shows up as book 11 on Amazon.

*****
After a strong start, it kind of petered out in the middle when the romance took a backseat to an uninteresting side plot. The ending was sweet but this book could have been 50 pages shorter.

Wow. I didn't expect to like the prequel so much. But I loved it. My rating is more like a 4.5⭐ than 5 tho. I think she gets in too much trouble without thinking about the consequences to others, and it was very clear to me who the bad guy was... only because of that that I didn't give it a 5.
What can I say? It could be described as a friends to love story but really, even as a tiny little girl she already loved him. I was very surprised with the beginning of the book. It captivated me right away. Because of her way of acting without thinking, it got a little desperate in the middle, and then very sad by the end. I recommend this series!

Always love an Elisa Braden book. Loved reading about Annabelle and John's story. The epilogue was delightful.

I did love how Jane said that their family is prolific. I thought this was a funny line coming from the future mother of twins. Well, a few more now since I am finally reading Genie's story. :)

Great series. You don't have to read the others to read this prequel. If you haven't started this series, you may want to read this one first but doesn't hurt if you don't.

Highly recommend this series.

Amazing second chance story. Be prepared to not like Robert Conrad in the beginning (at least I didn't) until you learn about his motives for spurning Lady Annabelle Huxley. It's quite heart-wrenching and yet you can't help but root for them to make a go of it. Ms Braden's writing style is exquisite. Highly recommend.

I thought the premise would make for a very good story…but it didn’t work out for me.
I really didn’t like the two MCs.
Her with her many TSTL antics and him cleaning or picking up afterwards or being a little too overprotective.
I got bored 😑

3.75/5. For most of her childhood, Lady Annabelle Huxley trailed her older brother and his best friend around everywhere. Her brother's pleas and harsh words did nothing to discourage her from acting on her fascination for Robert Conrad. Robert in turn had a weakness for the spirited younger girl, who always managed to get herself in trouble. He never resented coming to her rescue time and time again, until one day, rescuing her from one of her escapades resulted in him nearly forfeiting his life.

Fast forward seven years and Robert emerges in London for the first time since the life-altering incident. Following his slow and painful recovery from the multiple injuries sustained that fateful day, he had busied himself with bettering his grandfather's estate, but now the old Marquis of Mortlock has ordered his grandson to find a wife and start working on begetting a heir. Invariably, he soon comes face to face with a now grown-up Annabelle, a social butterfly flitting around soirees and ballrooms and still gracing everyone with her beauteous and warm presence. Only he doesn't get to benefit from company because he had savagely banished her from his life in the aftermath of that horrific trauma. But of course, she entrances him like she did as a little girl, only more so, because his manly parts are now also entranced by her womanly parts. The connection between them is as inexplicable strong as ever. Furthermore, Annabelle still courts trouble like she did as a youngster and Robert, he still consider it his duty and privilege to keep her safe.

Sweet story. Each chapter starts with cute, unsent letters a young Annabelle wrote to her object of affection, Robert, even when he excluded her from his life.

Dearest, Robert,
Keeping myself informed about your health has become impossible of late. Why must you constantly dismiss your valets? They make excellent sources, but only when employed.
Ever Yours,
Annabelle

Annabelle got a bit annoying halfway through with her irresponsible and ill-thought out perchance to put herself in danger. She also strangely was blind to his love for her, despite all his actions, big and small, pretty much spelling out his feelings in capitals. Robert is great, alternatingly brooding, protective and sweet. Love his grandfather and the clear affection between the two. Okay so, I might possibly have shed a tear or two towards the end. The old dragon, Lady Wallingham as always is a hoot with her pearls of wisdom such as:

“If Annabelle Huxley is a bee, then Matilda Bentley is a moth. Some creatures seek out ever more abundant gardens, create intricate homes in geometric order, build cooperative societies, and make life sweeter for their presence. Others perish because they repeatedly knock into the lantern.”

I enjoyed this but the amount of anguish the two main characters carry is excruciating. Robert Conrad refusing to see Annabelle for seven years was just a tad too far for me. Otherwise I loved it.

4.5 stars

This is one of those books where, objectively, I could nitpick a lot of things. But I loved the story (even if parts of it absolutely wrecked me), so I won’t.

The depiction of adolescent crushes and heartbreak felt so real, and I was fully invested in Annabelle and Robert’s journey back to each other.

Plus, Annabelle thinking that Robert did not care for her, but meanwhile:

“I am not leaving London without you.” He sounded like a beast.

So be it. She had little notion of his true nature, but she must learn swiftly.

My inner teenager sighed so prettily at that.

What an engaging story! The two main characters are very likeable. Annabelle, who has loved Robert since she was a young girl. She can be quite determined and is often sarcastic in her remarks. Robert has also had feelings for Annabelle, he is strong, both physically and mentally. But he does have difficulty expressing his feelings. Annabelle also has a secret that would cause problems for her, if revealed. Robert has a very protective attitude towards Annabelle, which isn’t always appreciated. I enjoyed the way their relationship grew and also the close family bond that the Huxleys had, as well as Robert and his grandfather. There are elements of danger and jealousy in this story, as well as a murderer to be uncovered. This book makes me want to read Book one again as certain aspects are seen from a different point of view! This book is a great addition to the series.
