The Boyfriend Effect

Rate this book
A sexy new series of standalone romances from New York Times bestselling author Kendall Ryan.
I'm not boyfriend material.
If a trail of broken hearts, and a piss-poor record of failed relationships have taught me anything, it's this.
My buddies are happy to give me shit about my latest breakup from here to next Sunday. Thanks, but I'd rather have a root canal.
And a vasectomy.
At the same time.
But my relief comes in an unlikely package-the gorgeous and feisty Maren. She just so happens to be my friend's sister, so that's not awkward at all.
But I'm a man on a mission, and Maren is down to teach me all the ways I've been failing as a boyfriend. Apparently, there are many. And it's all very informative-until I start to catch feels.
Now it's not just my reputation on the line, but my heart too.
Are these new characters? Yes! Hayes and Maren are brand new characters you've never met and I can't wait to introduce you.
Is this part of a series? This is book 1 in a new series about a group of male best friends who own an adult toy company. Get ready for lots of shenanigans, feels, and a swoonworthy bromance. Each book can be read as a standalone.

It's been a really long time since I've last read a Kendall Ryan book...
I was a huge addicted to her stories, until they started to blur into more of the same.

Maren at first doesn't feel natural to me... She could totally pass as someone bipolar if I can count all the times that she cried of deep sadness, right before laugh until her belly hurts.
She's a walking and talking contradiction.
And OMG she cried all the time!

Hayes was a little better, but not much.
A serial monogamist that apparently couldn't make a serious commitment with any of his past girlfriends, ending up their relationship in short time. In fact his insecurities and doubts during the whole story where just a huge turn off.

All the plot is again a little recycled, with the out of limits best friend little sister, which he knows since they're kids, their intense long time interest in one another, but without anyone noticing (not even themselves 🙄), he trying to be the knight in shining armor to her, so then they spend some alone time together, and all that jazz.

Even the end wasn't what I expect, since the whole book is around their insecurities and what his best friend will do when find out that he's screwing his little sister... Guess what?
Nothing is the answer. No one really cares!
In fact... The big bad best friend is also trying to get lucky with the little sister of their other friend...
Yep... Next book, same plot, different names probably.

Maybe my time with this kinda of old school fluffy rom-com is really over, and I have to accept this fact, because I don't truly think that they're all boring books... They just aren't my cup of tea anymore.
At least not this one, and I'm sorry for that.

I'm not boyfriend material...

I love a Kendall Ryan rom-com. This book was sweet and left me with a smile on my face. If you are a fan of brother's best friend books, I definitely recommend you check this out.

Hayes is taking a date from women. Maren is Hayes' best friend's little sister and completely off limits to him, but she's the girl he's always wanted. These two get thrown together on a project and the sparks are flying even more than usual. Though being together is forbidden to the both of them, they can't resist.

I enjoyed both Hayes and Maren and liked watching their romance blossom. I wish we would have gotten more of them as for real couple, that's my only issue with this one. Otherwise it was a great listen. It was narrated by my favorite female narrators (Erin Mallon) and Sebastian York, who always does an incredible job. My favorite part about it was the side romance with Hayes's grandma Rosie and Don.

I liked this one a lot, and I'm looking forward to Maren's brothers book!

Hayes Ellison owns an adult toy company in Chicago called Frisky Business with his best friends. His business is his passion, and he gives it one hundred percent. His romantic entanglements are a different story. He likes being part of a couple, but his relationships always seem to fizzle out. He can't seem to get the whole boyfriend role right, and wonders if he just hasn't met the one for him. Or maybe she's been there all along.

4A49AA19_5939_476E_8DED_4BBB112DAD2F

Maren Cox is his best friends little sister and off limits. She's beautiful, sweet, and has always been like family to him, but she's no longer the little girl he remembers. She's now 25, and all woman. His feelings are far from brotherly, but she will never be his. She's undeniably sexy, and he's crazy attracted to her. He's never felt about her the way he should. There's a spark and connection there he can't deny. He's tried to fight it, but it's a losing battle with his heart. As feelings grow he wants more, but will he betray his best friend? Will Maren be the one to make him believe in love, and finally get it right?

The Boyfriend Effect by Kendall Ryan is book one in the Frisky Business series. An all new series of standalones about five male best friends who co-own an adult toy company. The bromance is strong, and it's packed with humor and shenanigans. This first story is a sexy, forbidden brother's best friend romance full of chemistry and true love. I hope each guy gets their own book, and I can't wait for Wolfie's book up next in My Brother's Roommate!

FIVE FORBIDDEN STARS for Maren and Hayes 💖🖤💖🖤!!!

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I may not have read a lot of romantic comedies, but they revealed to me tropes that I simply adore no matter what genre it is.

And they are...

Best friend's sister/brother's best friend tropes.

Kendall is known for trying to write different tropes in her romantic comedies, but I think that this is the one she always writes in an interesting and always new way.

And that’s the main reason I can’t get enough of her books.

"The Boyfriend Effect" is a romantic comedy with best friend's sister/brother's best friend tropes.

Maren and Hayes's relationship is full of humor and fun, and most of all the sparks that later glow and turn into a flame that has no end and thus their interconnectedness takes on a new level.

If you love best friend's sister/brother's best friend tropes, then this is a book for you!!!

I am not getting the vibe why The Boyfriend Effect has many positive reviews while bored to death listening to the audiobook.

The plot is recycled. The banter between Hayes and Maren just plain boring. The smut feels like being copy and paste from many other books. I was expecting more from Miss Ryan.

Instead I got disappointment. I hope this is my last 2 stars book for 2020.

Maren and Hayes for the win! Love her name, btw!

The Boyfriend Effect is book one in a new series by Kendall Ryan. About friends who co-own a adult toy shop by the name, Frisky Business.

Book one was a HIT! It's sweet and steamy about a guy named Hayes who loves his best friend's sister in secret. The perfect friends to lovers romance. With a bit of forbidden love thrown in.

Hayes wonders why every relationship he starts ends in a pile of ash. His heart burns for someone else. Just has to wait for the right time to pursue her. He thinks there is something wrong with him because he wants the happily ever after, he just can't get it. So he decides to swear off women.

Well, all but one...

Maren has always wanted and lusted after Hayes for so long. She has put off attempting anything because her brother Wolfie pretty much forbid it and it seems like Hayes always had a woman in his life.

Maren opens up to Hayes about needing some help in keeping her job. Hayes offers to assist her (in all ways!) and knows just what to do to try to keep her employer in business.
One thing leads to another and their friendship blooms into something more, something beautiful. Hayes was so swoony!! He was the perfect man, for one very perfect woman.

Okay, so I’m almost positive this is my favorite Kendall Ryan book of all time! Hayes is a man who wants to be relationship material but try as he might, it never happens. He’s also always had a bit of a crush on his best friend’s little sister, Maren. She’s not aware of this, obviously, but it’s always been there for him, just simmering. Until it boils over …

I cannot even describe how much I enjoyed reading the guy wanting to be in a relationship but just couldn’t make it work. That was refreshing. This trope normally has the female in that role and seeking advice from the xyz person. GAH, I loved this premise so much it made me giddy LOL The story was fun and sexy! I thoroughly enjoyed the group of guys and their bromance! I mean they co-own a sex-toy store lol shenanigans running amok! Everything and everyone was just delightfully fantastic! I want to read everyone’s story right now!!

"When I look into his eyes this time, I don’t see a storm. I only see the future."

This has been the first book I read by Kendall Ryan. I loved the cover, and I loved the blurb so much I had to have it.
I'm so glad I did - it's such a sweet, sexy story! And I'll be coming for Wolfie's next, for sure!

"That’s not true. I’ve eaten the same brand of cereal for the past twelve years. I know a thing or two about commitment.
You have to love Hayes. This is a guy whose relationships always fall through, sometimes very dramatically! But unlike in other books where the guy would just go around being a manwhore of sorts, it bothers him that women don't find him "boyfriend material". It's freaking adorable.

"How long have I felt this way about him? How long have I wanted to lick water droplets off his skin?"
Maren is his best friend's sister and she's been in love (and lust!) with Hayes for a loooong time, always thinking she's never leave the friend zone and move on to being his something else.

Then one night changes everything and it's so cute, so funny and so sexy - did I mention he owns a sex toy shop with his friends? Well, he does... *grins*

This book has it all... the HEA, the love, the hotness, the "awww" moments and the funny moments. And great secondary characters - I loved Rosie so much!

And yes, sometimes if you're not boyfriend material, maybe you just haven't met your match yet! *wink*

The Boyfriend Effect is the first book in the Frisky Business series by one of my favorites, Kendall Ryan. Told in dual perspectives. Get ready to meet Hayes Ellison, a sex toy shop owner, and Maren Cox, his best friend's little sister.

After a string of failed relationships, Hayes decides to take a break from dating. He's obviously not boyfriend material or at least that's what he thinks. But as he grows closer to his best friend's little sister, he comes to realize that he isn't bad at relationships. He just wasn't in the right one. Hayes has always had a thing for Maren but due to bro code, he's always kept those feelings contained. But when he finds out the feeling is mutual, he can't help but to cross the line. Some things are worth the risk, and the consequences be damned.

This book was sexy, sweet and absolutely wonderful. I love stories that leave you smiling and feeling all warm and fuzzy. Hayes and Maren were the perfect match with chemistry that was off the charts and steam that set my kindle on fire. I sincerely enjoyed this book and can't wait to see what Ryan has in store for us next. Five stars for Hayes, Maren and The Boyfriend Effect!

HOW CAN YOU WRITE A BOOK ABOUT A GUY WHO OWNS A SEX TOY COMPANY AND NOT USE SEX TOYS IN THE SEX SCENES?!?? USING ONE ONCE WITHOUT INCLUDING DETAILS DOESN’T COUNT.

Kendall did this with another book! Were she makes it sound like the book will be kinky but then writes bland ass sex scenes!!!!!

This book was so fucking boring and needed more editing. It felt like Kendall had five scenes she knew she wanted to include but just couldn’t connect them well.

Also the synopsis makes it sound like she is going to be teaching him how to be a better boyfriend when that literally isn’t even part of the plot?!?!

The sex scenes were BORING.
The plot was BORING.
The chemistry was BORING.
The plot was BORING.
The book was BORING.

She didn’t even include any good tension between Wolfie and Hayes. Idk why all of these siblings are hanging out with one another?! I never hung out with my brother’s friends. None of my friends hang out with their sibling’s friends. And that includes the ones who are less than two years apart! You’re really telling me that with a four year age gap they were all besties growing up?! Nah. Don’t believe it. Also Wolfie going after his friend’s sister who is what like eight years younger than him and he has known since he was in college so she was what like 11 when they met?! So he knew her when she was a child?! Is no one going to mention how creepy that is?! HE SAW HER GROW UP. HE KNEW HER AS A CHILD. C R E E P Y. Also what brother has their sister who is eight years younger than him tag along to his guy’s and close friends retreat to a cabin every year?! I call bullshit. Why make the main guy own a sex toy store only to never have it be part of the plot? Why have them plan a fundraiser together only to ONLY INCLUDE ONE PLANNING SCENE THEN TIME JUMP A MONTH TO THE EVENT WITHOUT US GETTING THE SEXUAL TENSION BEHIND THEM PLANNING IT?!?!

The OW drama was the dumbest things I’ve read in a long time. She literally was in one scene and it ADDED NOTHING.

WHY PITCH SUCH A COOL IDEA ONLY TO MAKE IT SO BORING. YOU HAVE TO ACTIVELY TRY TO MAKE THIS PLOT BE BORING BUT YOU DID.

Why did Hayes’ grandma live with him when she seemed like she could take care of herself? She didn’t have a fall or anything? Why did he say no one has ever been to his apartment when earlier in the book he said Samantha had been there once before?! WHY LIE?!?

Recommend for people who enjoy bland books and boring sex scenes and plain oatmeal.

I’ve enjoyed only two Kendall Ryan books: Love Machine and Room Mate. But I enjoyed those when I was only just starting to read romance books. Were they just flukes and actually good? Or was my romance exposure so limited that the books were bad and I just didn’t notice?!?!?! Either way. I’m done with this author and her oatmeal.

Sultry, sweet, and entertaining!

The Boyfriend Effect is a sassy, tantalizing tale that mixes the hardworking, compassionate Maren who’s determined to use all her knowledge and expertise to help her long-time crush and her brother’s best friend finally learn how to be a good boyfriend, and the swoon-worthy, delectable Hayes who may finally realize the perfect girl for him is his best friend’s little sister.

The writing is titillating and witty. The characters, including all the supporting characters, are engaging and fun-loving. And the plot sweeps you away into an amusing storyline filled with witty banter, friendship, family, shameless flirting, sizzling chemistry, romance, and light drama.

Overall, The Boyfriend Effect is a charming, humourous, sexy start to the Frisky Business series with a wonderful cast of characters I can’t wait to get to know even better when the next novel releases in early December.

Thank you to Kendall Ryan for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Quick and sexy with a capital S, this low angst read is easy to devour in one sitting. While I do think the blurb is all kinds of misleading - this is a classic best friend's little sis "forbidden" romance, not a boyfriend training session - it's a great start to a promising new series. It's as steamy as you'd expect from a book about an adult toy shop owner, and short enough to read in a few hours. Our couple has been holding back their feelings for years, so it doesn't take long before they're heating up the pages. It's very much Ryan's style, with a group of friends you'll want more of and a romance that's light and sexy.

The story follows Hayes, a serial dater who seeks out relationships then lets them flounder. He moves from one girl to the next without ever putting his heart on the line, and there's always something off about each relationship. After his latest breakup, Hayes decides to take a break from dating, but that gets put to the test when a weekend getaway brings him closer to his best friend's little sister, Maren. While Hayes has never had brotherly feelings towards Maren, he knows that bro code dictates he stay away. But that's easier said than done once they cross the line.

I'll be honest and say that I expected this to go a completely different way, but I like a good best friend's little sis romance so I was happy with the direction it took. This author just needs to stop writing blurbs before she writes the books, because they often don't match up. This one is all about the lust between these two, the years of unspoken feelings, and the forbidden element. I wasn't sold on the timid, somewhat submissive Maren, but did enjoy the book from start to finish. It's low angst and steamy, moving at a quick pace without ever lingering on anything too heavy. There were a few things I didn't love (a little bit of awkward OW drama, the hesitancy to move forward, and the shallow feel of the relationship), but nothing that held me back from enjoying the book as a whole. I'm actually really interested in reading Wolfie's story next, and there are a few other characters who have my interest piqued. All in all, it's a very solid start to a fun, steamy new series and I'm looking forward to more. I received a free copy via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review of this quick, sexy romance.

Started off with a good needed laugh and knew right then this book was going to be one of Kendall Ryan's best!!
This best friends little sister story is the perfect beginning for this new series. Hayes and Maren, an amazing couple with lots of spark, humor, smoldering looks. Keeping their thing on the down low, haha, very entertaining! Loved it.
This book is filled with a fantastic group of characters, fingers crossed, will each have their own hot stories to tell.

I never like giving any Kendall Ryan book a 1-star but I was very disappointed with this book. It had major potential but was executed all wrong. I honestly wanted to take this story and rewrite the whole thing myself. So many good moments and they all fell flat. I was expecting more given this was about Hayes & his friends owning & operating a sex toy company and his long overdue crush on his best friend's little sister. The beginning started off okay but I could've played a drinking game and been drunk off my ass by how much Hayes whined and settled into overdramatic paranoia about Wolfie gutting him like a fish for having the hots for Maren. And guess what? Nobody gave a damn about them being together. Not even the big bad Wolfie.
The story wasn't rushed but it was just plain boring. So much so that I skimmed through most paragraphs. I mean, I don't even know how the book title "The Boyfriend Effect" even goes with this story. I expected that Maren was going to help turn him into a genuine boyfriend, giving him tips & tricks but we got none of that. I'm generally confused by the whole storyline and really wished it was better.

*Oh, and side note; how do you not include many more sex scenes with toys? He OWNS a toy company?! One, plain Jane scene just don’t cut it.

This is the first book in Kendall's new Frisky Business series and I definitely enjoyed every minute of reading this book!!! Hayes and Maren were fun, witty and oh so sexy that I had a hard time putting it down.....I was so immersed in their story it consumed me. The relationship that bloomed between these two was nothing short of swoon-worthy perfection. I'm so excited to see what's next in this sexy new series!!!

*4.5 Stars!*

One of my favorite tropes lately has been siblings's best friend. This one was completely enjoyable from the very beginning, all the way to the epilogue. I absolutely loved Hayes and Maren's story!

I loved watching Hayes realize that he isn't bad at relationships, he just hadn't been in the right one. After years of his true love being right in front of him, he finally has the chance to seize the moment. Maren has a very hard time hiding her true feelings for Hayes, especially when her brother keeps asking him to check on her. Their relationship is so sweet but don't worry their chemistry is steamy!

The secondary characters in this book are great! I'm so happy there are going to be two more books in this series.

Grateful to have received a complimentary ARC copy to honestly review.

The Boyfriend Effect by Kendall Ryan was a fun and light read and was just what I needed. This author does brother’s best friend romances like no one else. Hayes has been a serial dater, but none of them ever stuck. He is ready for a break. Enter Maren, who should be off limits, but determined to help him. But is really that he is bad at relationship or he just has not found the right person?

I loved the chemistry between Hayes and Maren. Their story was sweet and charming and the perfect quick and swoon-worthy read!

Happy reading!

The Boyfriend Effect is the first book in an all-new series and follows the story of Maren and Hayes. Hayes loves women. In fact, some would call him a serial monogamous. He’s not afraid to put his heart on the line, but is always falling for the wrong women. So, when his last relationship goes south, Hayes decides to try a new approach, he’s going to swear off women! That’s where Maren comes in to play. Maren has always had more than friendly feelings for Hayes. But since Hayes is her brother’s best friend, that puts him strictly off-limits. Too bad fate had other plans in mind for these two. Life keeps throwing these two together and limits will be put to the test. Will Hayes stay true to his plan and be able to stay away from Maren? There’s only one way to find out….

The Boyfriend Effect was a fantastic read from beginning to end. It was so easy to fall in love with Hayes and Maren. Hayes is the perfect guy and is looking for his forever in all the wrong places. He’s the kind of guy you can count on to have your back in any situation. And then we’ve got Maren. Maren has the best personality and is like sunshine on a cloudy day. She’s had a crush on Hayes for far too long and is afraid he’ll never clue in.

I have to say, I loved the push and pull between Maren and Hayes. Their chemistry just oozed off the pages and add the forbidden factor to their story, I just couldn’t get enough. Seriously, not only had these two been friends forever, but they knew each other and trusted one another. All of this leads to some pretty amazing will they/won’t they moments and I found myself glued to the pages.

There is so much to love about The Boyfriend Effect. I could just spend all day gushing about it. It’s the perfect brother’s best friend romance. The characters are fun, entertaining, and easy to relate to. This story had the perfect balance of romance, drama, and steam. The secondary characters are a riot and I’m dying for all of their stories to be told.

If you’re looking for a fun and sexy read filled with a lot of heart, then look no further. Grab your copy of The Boyfriend Effect today! I hope you’ll fall head over heels for Hayes and Maren just as I have.

Hayes you are the sweetest yet sexiest book boyfriend I've had the pleasure of meeting. From the first page I wanted to just pop you in my pocket and take care of you.

A strange reaction you may say but he's just so irresistible! I say lucky Maren! She's a ball of cuddles and spice. So when paired with Hayes they're pretty much a match made in heaven, if only they knew it too.

Hayes doesn't have the best scope with relationships. It's not that he hates commitment, it's that he hadn't found the right persons. If only he knew that.

Maren, is Hayes best friends little sister. He's known since they were kids and so automatically, Wolfie's little sister is off limits. Now did their libido's get that message?

They pine for one another and have done for so long. So when the tensions reach boiling point you can't blame them rolling in the sheets together.

With Kendall Ryan's usual touch of humour and heart, The Boyfriend Effect is ready to be your next on-click read.

It's got sugar and spice, that has you ready to curl up and spend the day with Hayes and Maren. It's low on angst, and high on heat, plus we get a cute little extra romance in this story that will have your heart swooning.

I'm hooked and so ready for Wolfie's story next, he's a mystery and gave me so many Grady vibes from Hot Jock Series. I haven't been this excited about a series since that one and so after devouring this baby, I can tell you we have another hit addictive series on hand!

This book is out of the ball park great!!!
It's all about the bro code....Little sisters is always a no go... That is until you really want to cross that line. Maren and Hayes are really perfect for each other. And I'm not saying that because of the affection they have for one another. It's all about the respect they have for Maren's brother Wolfie.
Having a crush on your brother's best friend is as natural as breathing for most girls. BUT when you find out he has a thjing for you all best are off

A brother’s best friend, sweet, and sexy romance to warm your heart. The tension and chemistry will simmer between this couple as they explore their heart’s desire.

Maren is the girl he can’t have. She’s his best friend’s younger sister. So Hayes has spent his time being serially monogamous with the wrong women. His relationships never last very long before they implode. Now he’s ready to swear off women altogether.

Maren is kind and compassionate. She works in a home for the elderly and she brings the sunshine wherever she goes. Her secret crush on Hayes has plagued her for years. He’s the only man she wants.

When opportunity arises, Maren takes the risk because having Hayes is worth it. One kiss changes their friendship forever. She’s no longer just the little sister, she wants to be more and she’s ready for anything. Hayes has his own baggage with failed relationships and a best friend he feels like he’s betraying, so he’s struggling with what he wants versus what’s right.

This was a forbidden romance with incredible sexual tension. They were friends for years. Hayes came to her rescue more than once and always looked out for her. Maren was exactly what Hayes has been searching for. All he needed was the right woman to get his Happily Ever After.

This story was flirty and fun. It’s just the beginning of this new series and I look forward to the next.

Kendall Ryan books always make me happy. They are filled with laughter, sexiness, fun characters and just enough angst to have you spending the day relaxing with one of her stories.

A best friend. His little sister. And the start of a funny, sexy story.

Hayes is just not having any female luck. He is just a horrible boyfriend.
Maren is sweet, with a kind heart of gold and a lifelong crush on Hayes.

The fun, the humor, the sexiness, and even the grouchiness of them finding their HEA made for a happy read. Thanks, Kendall for another five star afternoon.

I don't typically write bad reviews...but...this was not good guys! Not good at all. I've read my fair share of best friends little sister story lines. This book had zero drama, angst or anything to make it special.
The blurb made it sound like Maren helps Hayes become a better boyfriend or whatever like she helps him out with dates and such. It wasn't like that at all!
I was being nice and gave it 2 stars because I usually like Kendall's books. This one just fell totally flat.

The Boyfriend Effect is the first book in Kendall Ryan’s new series Frisky Business. This best friend’s little sister story is the perfect beginning for this new series. This is Hayes and Maren Story. They are an amazing couple with lots of spark, humor, and steamy love. Well keeping their attraction on the down low they find what has been missing in both of their hearts.
This series is filled with a fantastic group of characters. I look forward reading each of their stories!
