Princess Yona is the pampered daughter of her kingdom's king. Isolated and doted on she has two childhood friends, Hak, a general who also protects her and her cousin, Suwon who helped her mourn her mother's passing and who she is crushing on big time. On her 16th birthday her entire world implodes to to a crippling betrayal... She must decide if she will fall in line or rise up and take back her kingdom.

The Premise

Yona of the Dawn vol 19 showcases what Mizuho Kusanagi does so well... fun interactions between a princess, a warrior, a jack of all trades and 4 dragons!! These precious side stories and interactive moments bring Yona, Hak, and Yun as well as Sinha, Zeno, Jaeha and Gija to life. This is why Yona of the Dawn has such a large fanbase!! This time Sinha takes the spotlight finding a dragon statue in the middle of the forest! It gets them all into trouble and Yona steps up and gets them through the intricacies of Sinha's possession. Then we get back to Lady Riri and her struggles to get the drugs off the streets of her clan! It's pretty obvious this isn't a run of the villain this time around as its all been planned to meticulously by someone who knows Yona's group.

The Buzz

I loved learning more about Sinha!! He's so personable with that mask and Ao his little companion that you know he's a cinnamon roll and love him for it. So I was pretty taken aback by Yona of the Dawn vol 19 and his stance on returning to one of his predecessor's home. I was also pretty stunned when Lady Riri and Yona have a heart to heart about Suwon!! That was really shocking because for the first time Yona states out pretty bluntly how she feels about Suwon and why she feels conflicted about him still. I was pretty proud of this once ditzy and naive girl that her decision wasn't based on love but came from a place of thoughtful objectivity.

The Feels

Yona and Hak have some intimate moments in Yona of the Dawn vol 19 and they just make me so freakin happy!! I love the slow, slow, excruciatingly slow way that Yona moves closer to Hak. This time she gives him a gift and it makes them both beam. I specifically look for moments like these between our princess and her bodyguard and Mizuho Kusanagi doesn't disappoint!! There is also a lot of cute teasing of Yun!! He is a bit of a mother hen taking care of all of their worldly needs and its adorable how they show their appreciation of all he does for them.

The Visuals

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY wonderful frames in Yona of the Dawn vol 19. I was blown away by all the details... there are battles between allies! There are cute moments between Hak and Yona. There are plot moments where you go WOAH! There is meeting of past friends and meeting of new ones. Really the art is why we have visual stories and the art in Yona of the Dawn makes it all come alive!

Yona of the Dawn vol 19 takes us on a little side jaunt that is fun and proves why the series is so popular! Then we are left on the edge of our seats as a complex plot lures away Yona and Lady Riri's protectors... leaving them with a traitor!? You won't want to miss the explosive ending... Now I've got to wait for the next volume of Yona of the Dawn!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

"No matter what you do your place in our hearts won't change."

I love how Yona knows exactly what to say at just the right moment because that line was everything. ❤️

Especially in light of those first two chapters because I hated them.

More then any other chapter I've read in this series, I absolutely loathed them BECAUSE HOW DARE A SPIRIT TRY AND TAKE OVER ONE OF MY FICTIONAL CHARACTERS AND MAKE HIM DO UNKIND THINGS!!!! 😤😤😤😤😤😤 Completely UNACCEPTABLE!! As Yona tells the spirit, he (Sinha) is kind, so kind, and that spirit making Sinha doing those horrible things was so angering!

But as always, Yona makes up for the wrongs that were "forced" on him (Sinha) and says something that makes my heart melt in joy because Sinha is such an amazing character and NEVER deserved to go through what he did (even if it was pretty exciting to see his mask off). I get the sad story, but no spirit better ever come close to touching this precious little bean again. 😤 Rant over.

Since the last few volumes have been extremely heavy, my brain subconsciously decided to take a break and read something else that was VERY light and fluffy, so I had a feeling it would take me some time to get back into the intensity of Yona's world. And indeed, it is intense and looks like with stakes even higher as they face a combination of things that are even worse then what happened in the Water Tribe.

Thankfully though that we got more lighter moments in this one and will say that Zeno is really rubbing off on me. I didn't expect that, but he is quickly making a place within my heart too. Yun's moments were fantastic! Maybe they are minor compared to everyone else's, but that is no less significant for our "mother hen." Ha!

One thing that surprised me is that I did feel excited about some Yona and Hak ship vibes/moments. The scene where she sees him sleeping was SUPER cute because of Yona's reactions. Also the other moment they have was very precious and was on board for that!

I'm excited to see Riri again! (YES to girl's sleepover!) Though that ending sure left things intense involving her!

Lastly, one of my favorite things in this series is Sinha and Zeno's playful friendship! It's so wholesome! 😭😭😭😭

And the cover! Bless you Kusanagi, bless you Kusanagi!

Edited to Add: OH! Oh, oh, oh! I can't believe I forgot to mention it when I wrote my review earlier, but that conversation between Yona and Riri about Su-won was SO good!! I feel it captured my feelings SO incredibly well and why I don't personally hate Su-won. I think it is such a pivotal moment from Yona in just how she feels and what it means (for now) in moving forward.

YES. Another arc for my precious baby Sinha. Ugh. I love him so much. I really think he might be my favorite character. He's just so sweet and kind and shy!! He's adorable.

I like that we're back in the water tribe with Riri especially cause I found the first water tribe conflict to be lacking. This one however is juicy. I'm excited to get into it.

Also I love the developing romance between Hak and Yona. I really do like them together. Although I don't want Gija to be sad!!! Like ugh poor Gija. I don't want to see him heartbroken, but I don't think he and Yona would make a good match. However, I really hope he doesn't get tossed in with some random love interest. Or any of the other dragons for that matter. I always hate that. So far no other romances have been introduced though. So I guess we'll see!!

While I wasn't thrilled about a story centered on ghosts, the first part of this volume was a nice, little break from the main storyline. There were so many funny parts! (Some sad parts, too, though. 😢)
I found it especially hilarious how often Yun's "mother-hen" qualities were pointed out, and it's 100% true—even though he's the youngest of the group.

The second half jumped back into the thick of things, and it looks like it's going to be exciting!

Spotlight moment: Gija being more terrified of the spider hiding in the human bones than of the bones themselves. Oh, Gija. Please, never change... 😆

4.5 stars!!! So many Yona and Hak moments in this one ahhhhhhh! I honestly feel like they're both so close to making a move, like, Yona almost confessed her feelings in this one! I really hope we get more of Yona and Hak, because the hopeless romantic in me NEEDS for them to kiss. They need to become a couple and get married and have a happily ever after. I need for that to happen. I've been rooting for them since day one, and I have patiently waiting for their ship to start sailing.

I'm also so glad that Riri is back in the story! I know she's not joining them permanently, but I'm glad we're getting another arc with her anyways! That cliffhanger at the end was horrible though, especially since I don't have time to read the next volume right now. I need to learn to stop reading after every arc instead of after every volume.

After the tearjerker that was volume 18, it was almost a relief to have a ghost take over Sinha, because at least I didn't have to think about how sad Zeno's story made me. The romance subplot(s) also get upped a bit here, with Yona finally beginning to realize how she feels about Hak and a hint that Su-won may be developing feelings for new badass Yona, although as far as I'm concerned, that's too little, too late. (I don't even want him to get Riri at this point, but I may be over-emotional about the series...) Few series manage to elicit this level of emotional devotion this far along, and even if I need to step back for a bit so that I actually grade some essays, this is one of the best series I'm reading.

A nice entry with a quick story that focuses on my fave Blue Dragon again, and we’re back with Riri!!

Also the Yona & Hak slowest of slow burn romances continues to inch forward. This time….Yona thinks…she might feel…weird?? About Hak?

LOL, I kid, I love that the romance is taking its time, it makes all the various moments between them so much better.

“Princess, if you can be happy, then to me that is the greatest happiness.”

While this is very much a set-up volume, it was more than necessary after the pain and heartbreak of the previous one. I enjoyed myself, I laughed, and while my heart ached a little at points it was not overwhelming and that is exactly what I needed.

Getting Lili again is such a nice treat. I was not expecting her to make a reappearance any time soon but I had certainly missed her. Her friendship with Yona is quickly becoming one of my favorite things. Plus, it's just nice seeing both these girls just been girls for a little while.

The necklace scene, however, is not something I'll soon forgive and I need more moments like it to pop up all the time.

Now, we're getting ready to, what I'm sure will be, more action and heartbreak but I can hardly wait.

“That might be the case, but I did once think I had to get revenge. But, actually, even if I think I should never forgive him, I never truly wanted to kill him. The gentleness that person has shown in front of Hak and I, no matter what I just can’t feel like it’s all fake.”

So we’ve left the Kai Empire and now we’re I have no idea where, and our poor Blue Dragon has just become possessed by a malevolent spirit. Also, the nadai problem isn’t quite as resolved as we initially thought but our main cast is back on the issue.

The first arc in this volume wasn’t my favourite. I’m not sure if its purpose was just world building or for the sake of having material for the drama CD or if it’ll actually be important later on in the story which sometimes happens with Kusanagi’s story arcs. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing a maskless Shin-ah, seeing how much the characters love and care for each other, Yun being especially cute in this arc, Hak and Yona having some pretty great moments, and a more serious Zeno, but overall it just seemed pretty random for an arc spanning three chapters.

I feel like it wasn’t clear from the last two volumes what Yona’s next steps were going to be, but after this Blue Forrest Arc we seem to be getting more direction. After spending some time with Su-won we learn that the nadai problem is still on-going and now it turns out that Sei may be involved. I really do enjoy spending time with the generals, their dynamic isn’t quite as charming as the HHB but it was a lot of fun seeing them tease Su-won. As for our main crew reuniting with Lili, I’m pretty happy over this development. You wouldn’t think we’d be blessed enough to get a sleepover scene between the two girls given everything going on, but here we are! Lili and Yona having a heart-to-heart was definitely one of my favourite moments in the series and I like getting more insight into how Yona feels about Su-won. This volume also has some pretty fantastic Hak x Yona moments that have my inner fangirl beyond pleased.

Review:
I can't help but just give every volume 5 stars. I am really happy to be back reading these, I was starting to fall into a bit of a reading slump, and I just knew that I had to get back to this story.

The relationships between the characters are one of my favorite things about this story. The trust they've built and how they've become a family, just makes me so happy. And my heart hurts for Hak and Yona. Hak has spent most of his life in love with her and has resigned that she will never feel the same for him, but lately she's started to see a deeper side to him than the boy who teased her growing up.

I love how Shin-ha has opened up in recent volumes. A further reason why the anime was cut short. We didn't get to see any of the Dragon's growth, especially Shin-ha's. He's still more timid than the rest of them, but he talks more than he did when they first met.

I just love these characters so much. I hope someday I have the extra money to buy this series because I know for a fact that I would re-read it all the time.

*4.5. Such a good volume. I liked the focus on the blue dragon in the beginning. The second story with the drug was also intruguing. Also the development between Yona and Hak I loved. Overall definitely one of my favorite volumes.

Anytime Sinha gets an arc, it’s just excellence. The tragedy of the blue dragon seems to have a long history; each exploration into this adds even more depth.

And of course it’s nice to see Riri again and start another arc with her.

This was perfect in every way.

After the pain and agony of the last volume, this one had a really interesting mini-arc about Sinha with some tender moments between him and Yona, and a great mixture of comedy. I was laughing out loud at some of the jokes.

We finally, FINALLY, got some development between Yona and Hak’s romance and I could not be more happy about it. They are both suppressing their feelings for each other for different reasons so when their emotions end up spilling out anyway it’s just the most adorable and exciting thing. I love the two of them so much and these scenes were so great. I loved the extra chapter too!
