A Map for Wild Hearts: How to Make Art Even When You're Lost

Rate this book
With the same jolt of inspiration that Big Magic offered to creatives, along with the methodical, actionable steps of Julia Cameron's international bestseller, The Artist's Way, and relatable stories like those in genre-blending You Are a Badass, this guidebook is a revelation.

A Map For Wild Hearts: How to Make Art Even When You're Lost, a nonfiction debut from YA author and creative writing teacher, Andrea Hannah, cuts through the saturated self-development genre by offering something fresh directed toward older teens and creatively-blocked adults. Full of relatable and sometimes cringe-worthy stories and sage advice, A Map for Wild Hearts offers readers the steps they need to get back on track via warm suggestions and fun, interactive exercises.

A Map For Wild Hearts is encouraging and inspiring. You can feel Andrea rooting you on throughout every chapter.

This book is a must read for any creative type. As someone who creates art through a lot of different mediums, this is exactly the kind of work that will help me organize my projects instead of flitting from one to another, especially when I’m feeling stuck.

There is a moment in the book where Andrea says “Breathe, wild heart. You’ve got this.” And you know what? She’s right.

The only thing stopping me from giving this 5 stars is that there were a number of typos/grammatical errors. Nothing so egregious but...there were enough instances that it distracted me. Otherwise, Andrea Hannah's voice was so supportive and honest. If you liked Elizabeth Gilbert's earnest, lyrical tone in BIG MAGIC but wanted a little more grounded structure...A MAP FOR WILD HEARTS is for you. I'm so glad I finally picked this up, and I enjoyed Hannah's writing voice that I will definitely pick up her other work.

This will probably sound bad, but I chose this book at my favorite book review site because I was perplexed by its description. I couldn't really tell what the book was about from the blurb or the title and subtitle, so I was curious about what the book actually contained. In this book, the author leads you through making a physical map that expresses aspects of you and your creative bent. In the first part of the book, she goes over the obstacles to creativity. Once those shackles are off, she hopes to lead you on a creative journey of self-discovery that will help you in your future creative endeavors. It is a little hard to explain because the whole book is very right brained; the logical part of my mind is having a hard time pulling together all that this book is and what it intends to do. The author shares many personal stories throughout the entire book and provides a blueprint for making an actual physical map of what creativity means to you. Each main chapter has exercises to get you thinking about various aspects of yourself and the creative process. Even if you don't want to make a physical map like the book lines out, some ideas she has you think about are worthwhile for anyone who engages in a creative endeavor.

The author doesn't want to limit the types of creativity that her maps can be applied to, whether you see yourself as a creative making art (visual, literary, etc.), or whether you are just someone who likes to live life creatively (like someone who delights in their beautiful garden). If you see yourself as someone who is creative and would like to play creatively with your creativity :-), you might enjoy this somewhat strange but intriguing book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

This wonderful book is one that’s worth reading several times. It’s full of helpful advice, friendly stories to show that getting stuck happens the to best of us, and lots of great ideas for getting over creative roadblocks, combining a bit of mindfulness, self reflection, and interesting exercises in this endeavor. The author has created a system that can actually be applied to many facets of life, and she did so in a caring, supportive, cheering-you-on-from-the-sidelines way. I think this helpful guide would appeal to just about anybody who desires more from life in general and creative pursuits in particular and is willing to look at the issues holding them back with a proactive, open mind. I could go on and on, but in the end I would still be saying this: buy this book, it might just be the kindest thing you could do for your future self.

I generally don’t fancy myself a ‘creative type’ in the traditional sense of the word, so I wasn’t entirely sure what I would gain from this book. I picked it up anyway, and boy am I glad I did! Hannah talks about mapping out a sustainable path for finishing a project. I wasn’t working in a specific project, per se- not an author, musician, painter, etc.- but her advice and guidance can be applied to so many aspects of our lives. It helped me to think critically about why I was feeling so lost, and how I could start finding my way back to myself. It helped me map out a sustainable path for living. Definitely worth the read for this non-creative!

Andrea Hannah’s voice is so articulate in both its strength, realism and beauty. This book simply sparkles. She lights you up with inspiration from her own journey to practical guidelines on how to keep pushing when you want to give up (and as creators, haven’t we all been there?). She makes me remember WHY I make art; not for anyone else’s sake but for my own. Because the world needs more joy. This book more than contributes to that. My heart is full. Thank you, Andrea!
