The life of 18-year-old Estella is not easy. Her story begins like a dark and mysterious version of Cinderella (only without the step-sisters) because after losing her father, she now lives with her evil alcoholic step-mother, Vee, and and her sickly step-grandmother at a house on a cliff by the sea in Ireland. 🌊
Although Estella is about to finish high school soon, she has no plans for the future... until Noah Dylan enters her life.

Noah is Vee's younger brother, but many years have passed since he returned. Now, the three of them live together in Vee and Noah's childhood home, which holds lots of secrets, unpleasant memories and filled with nightmares. 💔
Noah's past is a mystery and Estella is there for him in a way no one has ever been, but hat is he hiding? Where has he been all these years? And why did he return now? 😱😱😱

📚 “𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐈 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮.” 📚

A tragic past, lies and haunted dreams... wow! It was a dark, mysterious and a weird (!!!) journey. It took me a while to figure out why it was labeled as a "gothic novel", but I definitely got it. 💙

The plot is full of secrets, the characters were well developed, the love story was believable - and although the story had unrealistic elements, it was completely realistic. I loved the characters and their story, but there were parts were a little too slow for my liking. 🌊

Although it took me a while to get into the story, this book surprised me. I had no idea what to expect, but I certainly was not expecting that! 💙

📚 “𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠.” 📚

Noah intrigued me... I didn't know what his story was and what secrets he was hiding. I wanted to grab him, shake him and force him to reveal everything!!! 😂
The story is written from Estella's point of view, but it did not take long to realize that Estella is more than just an ordinary girl. 😬

It was such a special and original story - even when I thought I knew what was going to happen - I was wrong, because I could never guess that twist! 😱

The author managed to touch me with her writing, the landscape descriptions, the characters and the plot. Highly recommend to anyone who loves slow and unconventional love stories. 💙💙💙

It’s been a while since I’ve read an L.H. Cosway book and I was really excited to pick this one up. Beyond the Sea is a beautifully written modern gothic romance and I enjoyed it lots.

Estella’s story starts off much like a version of Cinderella (without the stepsisters). After the death of her father a few years ago, she’s living with her evil stepmother. Estella is eighteen and in her last year of school, but has nowhere else to go, she she has to stay put. Her life’s the same mundane day by day until Noah shows up.

Estella’s life hasn’t been easy, but Noah’s has been torturous. Noah is her stepmother’s much younger brother and he hasn’t been home for a long time. The house they live in is creepy at best and holds the most unpleasant of memories for Noah. Noah and Estella form a bond. Noah’s past is dark and Estella is there for him in ways no one else has been.

I listened to the audiobook of Beyond the Sea and it was narrated by Shelley Atkinson. She did a great job voicing Estella. This story was hauntingly beautiful and I was intrigued from the start. I loved Noah and Estella and I love that they weren’t your typical characters. I loved watching their relationship build and finding out new things about them both and their histories.

This book was addicting and original. It was definitely a slow burn romance and forbidden in a way as well. It was heartbreaking, angsty, and made me feel. I love that L.H. Cosway writes unique romances, and this was no exception.

A dark tale filled with lies, horrific people, dark history, darker events, ghosts, coming of age, and love. This one twits at the heartstrings. I loved it, it made me cry and cheer.
Estella is living in her wicked step mother's home after losing her father. She is 18, just trying to graduate so she can collect her inheritance and find some happiness somewhere. In this house with the ghost of her loving father, her mean alcoholic step mother and sickly step grandmother, life is dreary. This is a house without love or hope, it’s dark and filled with nightmares. She finds solace in her religion as a devout Catholic.
Noah is a dark star 25 yrs old, her step mother's younger brother. He walks into her world and everything changes. He is all shadows, darkness and mystery. He is an unknown and she is drawn to him. His story is in the pages, you don’t want me to spoil it.
This is a very different book from what I’m used to reading from this author. I usually love all her characters and and be can sure of a HEA. Not in this book, I really hated a few of them and doubted any happiness could come out of it. Estella, the main female character was a slow to love one. She was young, meek, and super religious, not my kind of girl. Noah was the darkness but it wasn’t like I’ve come to expect in many stories. Both of these characters were so new and fresh to read. Watching their stories unravel and the truths be revealed was sweet and shocking. They start so disconnected so unhappy and slowly they get closer, some sparks fly and yet there is something very wrong. The other characters were.. well I’m not going to say . There were very good at what they were. At the ned of the book I was so sad to see the story end. I will miss them.
Great story Ms. Cosway

My very first gothic romance!!
According to Google gothic romances were mysteries, often involving the supernatural and heavily tinged with horror, and they were usually set against dark backgrounds of medieval ruins and haunted castles.
Here this book has it all, but it is set in current times, In Ireland.

This novel is filled with emotions of suspense, death, misery, and romance. It is absolutely atmospheric. From the descriptions of nature and interior to the characters the reader is immersed in the world of our protagonist. The entire time while reading it we are left in the uncertainty of what will happen and what is the result of all the mystery. This book will keep you guessing until the very end.

It is hard to talk about the storyline and give nothing away.
My recommendation is going blindly into it.

Estella is an 18-year-old protagonist in this book. She is the narrator of this story. Very innocent and in an unfortunate life situation, living with a stepmother after losing her father when she was 16 years old. Her mother died during her birth.

Noah is the mysterious hero of the story. He definitely tips toes the line of a bad boy with good intentions.

"They say that the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

This book is a beautiful introduction to the genre. I wouldn't mind reading more.
Definitely a unique and captivating book!!

“If I pit my demons against yours, will they obliterate each other so we can both finally be free?”

Styled as a modern gothic story, Beyond the Sea does not disappoint. One of my favourite books is Jane Eyre and for me, L.H. Cosway has produced a modern equivalent. Bold statement! But I stand by it. To be clear, Beyond the Sea, is not a retelling. It is just quintessentially gothic in its narrative, characters, setting and themes.
And I adored every minute of it.

Plan to spend the day reading this book because once you start, you won’t want to put it down. Addictive and enthralling, Beyond the Sea is told from heroine Estella’s point of view. Through Estella, Cosway takes the reader on a captivating journey of shattered innocence, alluring romance and revenge. Drawn to the contradiction of darkness and light she sees within the story’s hero, Noah, Estella is awakened to truths about the shadows that haunt her within his family’s home. More importantly, Noah challenges the darkness that cocoons Estella and dictates her every choice. Together they must fight the demons of the past if they have any hope of a future together.

With a dash of the ghostly supernatural, Beyond the Sea is romantic, atmospheric and utterly unforgettable. One of my top reads of 2020 and now a forever favourite.

I love LH Cosway’s books. They’re always unique, well written, and have characters that feel so real.

Estella is a young woman, living with her wicked stepmother on a house on a cliff. At eighteen, she’s finishing her final year at school and hoping to escape her living situation the moment she graduates. But then, her stepmother’s much younger brother, Noah, comes to visit. And Estella’s world is completely changed.

Beyond the Sea is a modern, gothic romance. And I gotta say, Cosway nailed the tone of a gothic novel. When I was reading this, it really did feel like all the gothic novels I’ve read in the past. I know it says what it is in the title, but I was blown away by how well she pulled it off. This story was very enthralling and I read the first 30% of it in one sitting. I probably would have read the whole thing in one sitting, except now that I’m in my 30’s I actually need my sleep and can’t pull book all nighters anymore.

Cosway has always been an autobuy author for me, and she remains that way with this book. I’m already itching for her to release a new book because I need my Cosway fix!

Noah is the dark, sexy, mysterious brother of her stepmother that unexpectedly returns home to stir up trouble. He's intense with questionable character, and is a complete wild card. She's enthralled by his bizarre behavior, and can't help being drawn to him. Time spent with Noah was always quite the experience, and exhilarating. Being in his presence was an alluring thrill where she existed in the moment. Even though she's suspicious of his kindness, he soon gains her trust. She was leery of him, but also insanely attracted . Could she allow herself to have these feelings, and give in to temptation? He took her out of her comfort zone and made her feel alive. It was an all consuming once in a lifetime feeling that terrified her and made her secretly crave the danger and unpredictability that surrounded him. As they develop a bond and undeniable connection the shadows in his eyes begin to mirror her own. Will they be able to overcome the past to finally have the future they both deserve?

This is quite an unusual romance for sure. As a modern gothic romance, it certainly lived up to my expectations. With an air of mystery and an undercurrent of something dark and dangerous always in the background of the story line, I was pulled into this book pretty quickly.

heathenwarrior: Shetland Island, The Knab

Estella is sweet and innocent but has been dealt a bad hand in life. She’s trying to hold on until she can finally escape from the home and life that has kept her captive. Written completely in her point of view it doesn’t take long to realize that she is more than a virginal teenager. Haunted by dreams that seem to have moved into her reality, we experience every emotion she feels as she processes what’s happening.

Noah kept me on my toes. I wasn’t sure how bad this bad boy was or what his ultimate agenda involved. No doubt he was delicious and the chemistry between him and Estella was always present but we didn't really get into the heavy action until the last part of the book. His mystique is definitely what carries this story more so than the house or the heroine’s dreams. I didn’t mind.

Himmel!! ‘There was a heavy, pressing sense of darkness and misery that made me want to flee. That same darkness permeated the entire house…’

Beyond The Sea by LH Cosway was a dark, eerie and haunting journey. It had an overwhelmingly sombre undertone with depictions of tragic and horrific pasts, sins of the father, invisible chains of superstitions and grief. It reflected on religion and the ghostly supernatural. But above all, it was a story of love and forgiveness. So well written and enticingly slow in its pacing, it kept us captivated. Mystery aplenty and a retribution of family sins, this is the love story of Estella and Noah; who have both been through a cataclysmic series of events.

“I don’t mean you any harm, Estella. You’re safe with me.”
“Why me?”
“Because I planned for everything, but I didn’t plan for you.”

Beyond The Sea is told entirely in Estella’s voice so the mystery and unpredictability of Noah and the sinister actions of Vee were thrilling. For us, the main character was the house by the sea though, it’s menacing front, the whispers of secrets it told and the vivid shape it took in our imagination, we got chills! At times we thought we’d cracked Noah’s secrets only to be knocked sideways by a twist we did not see coming. We had copious theories along the way, it was like a puzzle shaped by behaviours and hearsay. By secrets, lies and violence. The intense depictions of everyone’s inner struggle with their individual demons and curses all added up to one hell of a unique story from LH Cosway, it was certainly unlike any we’ve previously read by this Author.

“I’m a lost cause, Estella. Your God can’t save me. Nor anyone else’s.”

What a refreshingly dark and also beautiful slow-burn romance set under an excruciatingly sinister roof on a cliff in Ireland. We really had no idea what to expect from Beyond The Sea, but this definitely wasn’t it! Going in blind is definitely the way to go in this Gothic romance, hence why our review is completely spoiler-free as usual. The way in which LH Cosway invites the reader to truly experience the complex world of eighteen year old Estella was breath-taking at times. The vivid imagery astounding, and her writing causing goosebumps and chills. In only the darkest of nights can the true healing light be seen.

“If I pit my demons against yours, will they obliterate each other so we can both finally be free?”

We were obsessed with Noah and his secrets and we felt an overwhelming need to protect Estella and help her escape a fate she didn’t deserve. All whilst dying to unravel the thrilling mystery of what actually happened in the house by the sea, Ard Na Mara. LH Cosway wowed us with the scenery, the atmosphere, the characters and the storyline. She wowed us with her writing. We could not put this book down!

‘Noah had captured a part of me I didn’t know existed, rendering my carefully crafted plans into a slowly crumbling relic.’

“How can you be so sure of what you believe, if what you believe is the only thing you’ve ever known?”

I loved that quote. So deep 🤔🤔🙂

Synopsis:
Kind of a modern day Cinderella. Step mother doesn’t treat girl right and a handsome guy comes into her life and ultimately they rescue each other.

”You lost your dad two years ago and have been living with the world’s worst stepmother ever since.”

My Thoughts: The following are my thoughts about this book:
General:
- Trigger warning:
- Setting: Ireland

Characters:
- Noah (25):
- ”Noah. He was such an odd person, one minute telling me about the bully he threatened to assault as a teenager, the next waxing lyrical about his lost faith in religion, then commenting on the design of a piece of classic furniture.”

- Estella (19):
- ”I thought of the last two years and how awful they’d been, missing Dad and being stuck in Ard na Mara under the tyranny of Vee.”

Story Thoughts:
- Sylvia - I kind of had her pegged from the beginning. Although when all was revealed I clearly underestimated her character.
- Some of Noah’s actions were a bit confusing. Like why get the key and enter the house and who were the people at the poker game and what was the point of all that? 🤔
- I didn’t think the author stayed true to the Veronica character she created in the beginning. The change didn’t feel authentic nor believable
- And, to the point above👆, I didn’t see how Estella could feel so differently about her at the end vs. the way she felt at the beginning. Sure, she got a better understanding of what made Veronica tick, but 2 years of hell doesn’t seem like it would be that easy to forgive. Maybe Estella is just a better person than me. 😃
- Glad to see the adults got what they deserved, but I would have liked just a little more of seeing them lose everything
- I loved Noah and Estella together.
- Unfortunately I got a little bored in the middle. I don’t know if the story wasn’t moving fast enough or I wasn’t getting enough twists and turns in the story or enough answers to all of my questions, but whatever the reason I got a little bored. I didn’t skip pages, but I wanted to
- I loved the setting in Ireland. The writing was descriptive enough that I could picture the scenes.
- I liked the secondary characters and felt they supported the story
- Very slow burn to the bedroom scene. Parts were a little steamy but I don’t really think the romance was the focal point. More along the lines of revenge, forgiveness and finding yourself.
- Heavy overtones of Christianity and faith
- Overall, I enjoyed the story

”It was the sweet, heart fluttering moments like this, and the exhilaratingly exciting ones scattered in between, that made all the darkness, all the pain and the anguish worth it.”

Overview:
- POV: told only from Estella’s POV
- H likable? Yes. Noah was a mystery that I had difficulty solving. Even at the end I’m not sure I understood all of his character. But, who really cares cuz he was heart tugging and I really liked him.
- h likable? Yes. Although I was confused about Estella’s paranormal gift. The explanation of her being psychic didn’t explain how she had the ability to see things that maybe weren’t necessarily happening at that point in time. I was a little confused about this. She was a bit naïve and indecisive, but she was 18 so I guess that was understandable.
- h virgin? Yes. H is also a virgin

Quotes
“You have your wits, Estella, and they far surpass those of Sally O’Hare. Use words as your weapon, and you’ll win the war.”

“That was the problem with living in a small town. You never could tell if you were extraordinary, or if everyone else was just very ordinary, rendering any small talent unnecessarily amplified.”

“When you’re alone in the world, having something to believe in is often the only thing to get you through.”

“I’d rather believe in something than nothing.”

“What’s in your background?”
His gaze lowered to my cross pendant before returning to my face. “Sin.”

A striking romance that had me gripped from start to finish with its suspenseful mystery and emotional intensity with a dark haunted backdrop.
“You could never be a mistake because you’re mine.”

➵ Heroine: Estella is somewhat of a Cinderella. She’s eighteen years old, her father died a couple of years back and lives in her evil stepmother’s castle just waiting to finish school in order to collect her inheritance and get away. She was kind and honest which was bound to impact the people that surrounded her including Noah.
“Having the courage to be kind in the face of [cruelty] was the only thing that could stop its spread.”

➵ Hero: Noah was a mystery and I wasn’t sure what to make of him at first, but I definitely wanted to know him and as the story unfolded I desperately wanted to know the secrets Noah hid. He was Estella’s twenty five year old step-uncle with a good heard underneath a bad boy façade. I hated that he felt unloaveable which was understandable once we find out about his tragic past but was glad that he found Estella who brought him happiness.

➵ Plot: Absolutely unputdownable. This is my first gothic romance and it was absolutely refreshing. I very much enjoyed getting to know the characters one layer at a time and reading how their story unfolded.
"They say that the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

➵ Feels: I experienced a plethora of emotions, from empathy to shock, sweetness to disgust (not directed at the main characters), delight over the budding romance between Noah and Estella, thrill over what was to come, and overall enjoyment by the depictions of nature and surroundings where this story develops.
➵ Sexiness: I don’t feel like I’m giving anything away, given that this is a Gothic Romance, by saying that the spark between Noah and Estella was palpable from the beginning. It was a slow burn that turned into an passionately powerful inferno.
"Something about how perceptive he was made me feel a simmering heat under my skin. "

➵ Facts: Beyond the Sea is standalone gothic romance by L.H. Cosway. It is told from Estella's point of view.

➵ Overall rating: 5+++

Beyond the Sea fascinated me. I can’t recall if I have ever read something similar to this. My mind was reeling with possibilities, trying to guess what was happening, but at the same time, the slow-burn romance was somehow calming me.
Although this was not first paranormal book I’ve read from this author, that Gothic vibe made it different and stand out… and never-to-be-forgotten.

Beyond the Sea by LH Cosway

‘“Tell me what you’ve been through,” I whispered so quietly it was almost lost on the wind.

Noah took several steps until he stood directly before me. Reaching out, he caught my chin, his thumb brushing the underside of my jaw. “Why? Do you want to kneel down and say a prayer for me, Estella?”’

There is nothing more powerful, profound or magical than a book that can lure you in, wrap you up in secrets and mysteries, mesmerise you with stunning and insightful dialogue, caress and unnerve you with every emotion known to man, or provoke and entice you like the unknown elements introduced in this epic saga from author LH Cosway.

The whole story, the plot and the complex and utterly fascinating characters are as tumultuous, unpredictable and dangerous as the ocean, by which Ard na Mara house is built. An old victorian building, that holds more memories, ghosts and temptations within its decrepit walls than most people would be comfortable with.

LH Cosway has managed to build this beautifully intricate, finely tuned and imaginative story around Ard na Mara. Almost as if the house itself is a living, breathing entity and in a way it is.

“Beyond the Sea” embodies literally every aspect of what I look for in a great book. It is shrouded in mystery and imbued with supernatural elements, as well as having implemented the intricacies of religion, elevating it all into an exceptionally well written, exhilarating romance. It’s a truly sensational gothic love story. It’s dark and emotive, marred in shadows and heartbreak but contrasted beautifully with these great comedic moments. Morbidly and absurdly funny in moments, while sensual, weighty and daring in others yet shocking and slightly chilling when the past resurfaces. There is so much to see, feel and experience.

‘A shudder went through his entire body as I whispered against his mouth, “If I pit my demons against yours, will they obliterate each other so we can both finally be free?”’

Told entirely from our heroine’s point of view, I never once felt like we missed out not having Noah’s voice present. I’m a big, big fan of dual points of view but in this instance I truly believe it worked best told from Estella’s. She was the devil’s advocate a lot of the time. Sitting between good and evil. Unsure of her place in life, lonely, sad and slightly desperate for not only love but understanding and acceptance in her young life. She was an amazingly realistic yet multifaceted protagonist. Estella was a conglomeration of bewitching yet innocent, closed off from the world, yet full of insight. She was neglected and somber, yet harboured immense inner strength and compassion. The connection she and Noah shared flared off the page, sizzling and crackling like a live wire whenever they shared a scene together. Those little touches, glances and unspoken words, were full of so much subliminal meaning and longing, that you can’t help but wish and pray for them both to get their happy-ever-after.

Noah, our troubled, brooding and enigmatic hero was simply delectable. He was as layered and complicated as Estella, just a little more jaded and damaged, and even though we see everything through Estella’s eyes, I found that we still got to delve down deep into Noah’s character. How he views the world, how he thinks and feels and reacts. When he’s around Estella he’s beautiful and deep. Arresting and dynamic. Together they were as different as night and day, dark and light and that made them such an enticing couple to fall in love with. From beginning to end they both managed to capture my attention and hold my heart in their hands, as they traversed the complications and astonishingly difficult terrains that they found themselves on.

“Beyond the Sea” is a heartrending, magnificently crafted, intoxicating, gothic romance, one that is full of twists and turns, thrills and revelations, innocence and love. It’s also utterly unique, written with flair, style and an exquisite amount of suspense and emotion and as of right now, Beyond the Sea has claimed a top spot in my ‘best of 2020’ list.

2 dumb stars.

So im confused. I remember L. H. Cosway being a decent writer. I've read a few books of hers in the past but I dont remember her writing being so.... dumbed down. Because this book was exactly that and what contributed to a 2 star review. The narrator, our heroine, talked at a 4th grade reading level which made the romance really cringe. Who wants to read a romance with a narrator that speaks and thinks like a toddler? Ever other sentence began with "I" with every sentence being short with no flow to the writing at all. There was a lot of "I was so tired that I went to sleep. Once I got to bed I started to get sad. I then remembered my father." There was no humanity to the writing at all. I felt like I was reading a robot teens secret journal.

Another thing that brought this book down was the constant bait and switch. Both MC's couldn't make up their minds about each other. In one chapter the heroine would switch from liking the hero to avoiding him. In another scene, things are FINALLY starting to get hot and heavy but then the heroine stops to talk about her dead dad. Whyyyyyy would you bring this up??

And another thing, nothing sexual happens until the 80% mark of the book but at 75% the heroine goes to another boy and kisses him and asks him to get rid of her virginity so she can see if she really wants to become a nun.

Yes you read that right. At 75% mark, our dopey heroine is considering becoming a nun so she asks a random guy to have sex with her even though she has romantic feelings for the H. After I read that I skimmed everything afterword. This is not someone I route for.

Safety: Safe with exception/ not safe depending on personal preference.
No OW drama
OM drama - like I mentioned above, the heroine has feelings for the H but goes to another boys house and kisses him and asks to have sex with him. They never go through with it, but they do kiss.
H and h are both virgins.
Push and pull on both sides.
Violence, domestic abuse, incest

As someone who typically gravitates toward lighter, sweeter, more emotional romances - I find myself an unlikely fan of gothic romance. There's something so satisfying about the sort of eerie quality of these tales. I like to flirt with the darkness. I like to feel a little unnerved about what has happened that we don't know about yet, and what might unfold over the course of the story.

Under the Sea was exactly like that for me. I gobbled it up! I was so interested in the story from the very first page. I was sucked right into the atmospheric, unsettling reality of Estella's life. It read like a Cinderella story, but then it took a sharp left and left me rattled and surprised and a little bit shattered. This story wasn't what I expected at all, but what an addictive ride it was!

I loved Estella and Noah's relationship. I didn't connect to it on an emotional level necessarily - their feelings weren't something that I felt down to my bones - but I loved how they gravitated toward each other and balanced each other out. As pieces of their story unfolded, they took my heart by bits and pieces and when all secrets were unveiled and my heart was rocked to its core -- I knew that I would never be able to let them go.

This is a little bit dark, a little bit creepy, but ultimately incredibly satisfying. I lost myself for hours in the compelling storytelling and the mesmerizing story. I enjoyed it so much, and definitely recommend! ~ Shelly, 4 Stars

FIRST GOTHIC ROMANCE EVER & I AM 100% IN LOVE!!

Beyond the Sea is what I could only imagine as the perfect modern-day gothic romance. This story was everything and MORE!

Estella is 18 years old, innocent and kind but has been dealt an awful hand in life especially at such a young age. Her mother died when she was a baby, her father died a couple years ago and now she is trapped in a house with her wicked stepmother trying to hold out just long enough to escape for college. Haunted by dreams that seem to come not only when she is asleep but also when she is awake. Estella does not know how much more she can handle but all that changes when her stepmother's brother comes to town after being gone more than a decade.

Noah was a mystery wrapped in a beautifully dark paradox that just kept you guessing. On the outside he seems like this bad boy who only wants revenge, but he is also hiding some serious dark secrets. After his troublesome past Noah feels like he is unlovable but as he forms a friendship with Estella, he is finally finding some peace in his darkness.

From the very first page this story had its hooks into me and while it wasn't necessarily an easy read it was powerful. The setting of this story was dark, eerie, a bit haunting at parts but breathtaking. Once the secrets start to come out you see what a tangled web has been woven through this entire book. Cosway's writing was so compelling that these characters will stick with me years to come.

Hi, and welcome to today's episode of "That Was Fucking Shit."

L. H. Cosway really served us with a boatload of utter crap. It started going downhill from the first page. To be honest, I don't think it was ever at the top of the hill. It started at the bottom of the hill and just had nowhere to go, but still managed to get worse.

First of all, and I'm going to say it, Estella was a little fucking bitch. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's dive right into this enormous trainwreck of a novel.

The first page begins with some of the worst writing I have seen in a while, and that's an accomplishment because I've read some pretty bad shit.

Please, if I wanted to read the diary of a self-obsessed little bitch, I would go and fucking find one. Why would you give it to me in novel format?

Estella's dad died, and her stepmother is evil and wicked. Yay. Thank you for sharing. I am so intrigued. How exciting. What an attention-grabber. I am entranced.

You can't fucking start a story with exposition in that form. It literally goes like, "My dad believed he was cursed. He died. His father died, and my mother died in childbirth. And now I live with my wicked stepmother."

Wow, what an intriguing start to the story! I am absolutely hooked!

Then we meet Noah.

I just need to say one thing: Noah is Estella's step-uncle. And he is the love interest. That's it. That's all I wanted to say.

Moving on. I hate lust-at-first-sight stories. Like, thank you. Okay, he's hot. I get it. You're basically a child and you're turned on by this dangerous man. ooooh. So very cool. And now what?

You're in love with him?

Because he has abs? Sister, no.

Also, the amount of throbbing between her legs in this novel? Um, no. Estella, you actual Catholic child. You religious little girl. You innocent little fucker. Naughty, naughty thoughts for such a child. (Okay, fine, she's eighteen, but that's still a child in my eyes.)

This following quote is a great representation of the stupidity of Estella, and don't you worry, she has stupidity in spades.

I slotted it in my jeans pocket and thought of what Aoife said about Noah being “psychopath adjacent.” I wondered if she might’ve been onto something. It was worrying that the thought didn’t scare me. Instead I felt even more drawn to him.

Hold the fuck up. Hold the fuck up. You are telling me that you recognize that he is a psychopath. A FUCKING PSYCHOPATH. This man has maybe murdered someone or at least severely maimed someone, and you're fucking TURNED ON?? Get the hell out of my face, Estella, with your stupid ass shit. He literally was cutting up people's clothes right before this. That's why she was reminded of Aoife's very apt comment. He broke into someone's house and started cutting up their clothes.

For no reason.

Let's continue.

One of my favorite quotes is as follows. For a little context, they have just broken into Estella's principal's house, and Noah has randomly picked up some lipstick and put it on Estella's mouth.

“Kiss the mirror,” Noah encouraged with a light push on my hips. As though in a trance, I leaned forward, pressing my lips to the cool glass. The approval in Noah’s gaze made me feel alive, like I was possessed by his wildness. “You kill me,” he breathed.

I'm sorry, what??!?!??? What the fresh fuck is going on? Who just does that? Why would you break into someone's house and kiss their fucking mirror while wearing their lipstick? Why are you LISTENING TO A GODDAMNED PSYCHOPATH??

I think the fact that Noah is literally a psychopath would have put me off him immediately. I don't know, maybe that's just a me thing, but I am personally not attracted to psychopaths. I don't know if I'm out of the norm here, but I would generally assume that's not a me thing, and more of a fucking HUMAN INSTINCT TO RUN AWAY FROM DANGER. WTF ESTELLA HE'S LITERALLY A PSYCHOPATH.

Oh, and let's not forget this gem:

“Does he scare you?” she [Aoife] asked in a quiet voice.

I met her gaze, and in a moment of unfiltered honesty answered, “He terrifies me.”

“What I wouldn’t give to know what that feels like,” she said on a sigh. “I mean, Jimmy gives me tingles, and it feels nice being with him, but the chemistry between you and Noah. That’s a once in a lifetime feeling.”

No, Aoife, I'm pretty sure Estella meant that Noah literally is a psychopath. I mean, I guess his violent and manipulative tendencies are just a small problem in comparison to all the tingles Estella feels. Right? Wouldn't you ignore a man's blatantly violent and problematic past for all the chemistry?

Honestly, this book was kind of funny.

My favorite tip if you end up reading this book is to read it in a really over-the-top Irish accent. Obviously if you're Irish, I mean, you don't have to, but if you're not, it's so fucking funny to imagine Estella and Noah with thick Irish accents. It's set in Ireland, so it's extra funny to imagine them with like, the thickest broguish Irish accents.

Also, there's a mild supernatural component to this novel, which really comes out only at the end and adds absolutely nothing to the story at all.

Hey, I've read L.H. Cosway before and I've liked their stuff. This just isn't their best book.

And I'm out.

This story is just wonderful. L.H. Cosway once again created a universe where I got totally lost in history and I was sad to say goodbye to fantastic characters. Your stories and characters are always unique and here couldn't be any different. I fell in love with the story of Noah and Estella.

The chemistry and connection between Estella and Noah was very well built and I loved the way that L.H. Cosway formed the connection between these characters, not to mention that the attraction between them was palpable with each page that I advanced in the story. It was impossible not to be intrigued by the air of mystery that surrounded the story, of course due to the beautiful, simple and even innocent love story built by these characters.

I've seen myself in love and intrigued by Noah since he was introduced in history. Just like Estella I saw myself intrigued by the mysterious air that was hanging around this character and every page he was showing his goodness, protection, care and love for Estella and Vee I saw myself falling in love with them. He's a special character who captured my heart. Estella is also a great character, brave, strong and kind. I loved the link formed between them and how each knew to bring out the best in each other when they were together. The secondary characters here each had their importance to history, and I wouldn't mind that a special character would win their own story in the future.

Here the author created a magnificent universe, with romance, suspense and twists I didn't see coming and surprised me. I simply loved that story and it's certainly one of my favorite readings from 2020.

Nach 2/3 abgebrochen bzw. nur noch quergelesen.

Leider gibt es immer wieder einmal Bücher, von denen man sich ein Highlight erhofft, die dann aber doch ganz anders sind, als man das im Vorfeld erwartet hat.

Beyond the Sea gehört für mich dazu.

This was amazing! I highly recommend it.

I just wanted to give a bit of a trigger warning : it does not involve the heroine in anyway. There are certain scenarios that can be triggering especially related to the hero’s past, I don’t want to give any spoilers because this book is better read without knowing too much. It’s a journey and this book was written exceptionally well.

I love everything I’ve read by Ms. Cosway. I’ve noted before but she writes such out of the box romances that every book is something brand new and a fresh of breath of fresh air. By reading the synopsis of Beyond the Sea, I knew this would be the same this time. But in addition to her usual unusualness (grin) this one is also labeled a gothic and while I have read a true gothic romance for years now, I cut my reading teeth on them so to speak. And when reading a gothic, one of the cardinal rules is DO NOT jump to the end before you get there since there is always a dark mystery in a gothic and that and reading the end before you get there will ruin it. And since I’m a jump to the end addict I knew going in this would be a challenge,

First off, the challenge was successful!! Yes (fist pump) I did NOT skip ahead. And that was a good thing as the suspense built and built and as that happened it got harder and harder for me to put this book down.

Estella is our young heroine, Her beloved father had died a couple of years previous to the start of this book and she was living with her very cruel step mother – total Cinderella set up minus the ugly step sisters. Estella is young, beautiful and innocent, the usual kind of heroine in a gothic. Her life was hard and she was barely holding on until she graduated high school and could claim her inheritance and move away to college. But her world is shaken when Vee, her stepmother’s brother Noah shows up. He is handsome, dark and mysterious. Because she is such an introvert, she is ripe for bullying by other girls in the all catholic school she goes to and Noah challenges her to stand up to them. They slowly build a friendship though Noah is constantly warning her away from him, while at the same time she is developing deeper feeling for him. There is also the strangeness of the relationship between Noah, Vee and Sylvia, their wheelchair bound mother who also resides in the same strange and eerie house. The house which almost seems haunted by ghosts of previous owners throughout history and their tragic tales.

The bummer of this review is I can’t really say anything about it without giving away huge spoilers. I can’t even add a lot of the ‘shelves’ I normally do since even doing that would give away spoiler that come later on in the story. So I limited to just saying this is an amazing book. The further I got in the book the more I couldn’t bare to put it down, even to the point of making dinner. Yes, I went dinnerless last night since to make it would have taken to much time away from reading to find out what happens next. And because I also read this one so quickly, I’m going to reread it again, slower this time to fully savour its emotional wonderfulness. It checks all boxes of the great Gothic romances I read in the past, Daphne du Maurier, Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt being just a few.

As a great gothic romance should do, this one is haunting me.

Wow! L.H.Cosway really outdid herself this time!
Loved this story so much! Everything you could want in a story is there!

Estella is blessed or curse? You decide! Not everything you see is what it seems and that was my favorite part of this book!
Well done!

It's with puffy and burning eyes that i'm writing this review...

LH Cosway surprised me once again with this PERFECT GOTHIC ROMANCE.
BEYOND THE SEA is a suspenseful, thrilling and poetic story, with mysterious elements. We read it with a constant feeling of anxiety, each word evoking an atmosphere of horror and dread.

Estella, our heroine, lives in an old house named ARD NO MARA. A "victorian residence sat close to the precipice of a cliff on the east coast, overlooking the vast Irish sea". An old house inspiring feelings of uneasiness and CREEPINESS, with horrific legends and maybe some ghosts haunting its walls... The characters seem trapped in it. It perfectly sets the scene for a thrilling and frightening story.
ESTELLA is a VIRTUOUS and pure young woman, studying in a convent school with nuns. She's 18, an orphan, living with a CANTANKEROUS STEPMOTHER (Vee) and her mother (an old and sick woman) in their family residence.
Like a modern Cinderella Estella is mistreated and has to obey. She's not happy and has frequent nightmares and visions, as if a ghost was haunting her spirit.
NOAH (Vee's little brother) appears from nowhere. He's in his twenties, cynical, witty, MYSTERIOUS, DARK, a tortured soul... He never really answers questions, he has a lot of SECRETS and sees himself as a demon, the creation of evil deeds. He's kind of an antihero but it's impossible to hate him. He's generous and patient and sometimes charming with our heroine. He's oddly nicer with his cold and bitter sister than with their poor mother. He's nice but also threatening with the inhabitants of the town, they seem to like him and dread him too. We wonder who's the real villain of this disturbing tale...
It's hard to understand Noah, he has so many secrets and we don't have his pov so it's really frustrating. Estella doesn't know what to think about him. She's attracted to him, an innocent angel feeling lust for a demon. She attempts to figure out what is right for her heart.
Near the end we have the revelations we desperately waited for... And they are... really surprising and atrocious, it broke my heart and i cried so much. And i admire even more LH Cosway for this beautifully orchestrated twist.

BEYOND THE SEA is a story of beliefs, of curses, of revenge, of lies and of Love.
Like the old house, the world where Estella lives is rotten, haunted by the past and dark secrets, full of cruel people.
The author delivers high level emotions such as anger, sorrow, terror and an intense and powerful love.
LOVE between Estella and Noah blooms slowly through the pages. They try to resist it, but this kind of pure love is stronger than beliefs and fears. They are two angels deserving their HEA.
Their love is their reward, their miracle, their salvation.

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH LH COSWAY.
