World's Greatest Cities: A Journey Through the Most Dynamic and Fascinating Cities in the World

Rate this book
World's Greatest Cities is an illuminating visual guide to 30 incredible cities around the globe—with annotated 3-D reconstructions and cutaway models that allow you to journey right to the soul of each of them.

For thousands of years, cities built by humans have reflected their beliefs, their power, their needs, and their desires. Palaces and prisons, churches and mosques, skyscrapers and suspension bridges are the tracks that history, sometimes glorious, often violent, imprints on these cities. But these cities are also the men and women who inhabit them and who stamp a unique character onto each of them. The spirit of each city is also etched in the daily coming and going of the streets, the hustle and bustle of the markets, and in the unhurried discussions of the cafés.

Explore the cities of the world today that leave a lasting impression on those who visit them. These cities offer rich architectural heritage and spectacular natural environments. But above all, they have a vitality that makes them unique. They are cities that know how to grow, transform, and reinvent themselves without losing their essence.

Feel the heartbeat of the most vibrant and exciting cities around the globe. Skyscrapers, alongside ancient marvels, are beautifully illustrated and perfectly complement the engaging text that describes the creation and history of these celebrated destinations.

The cities examined are: Paris, San Francisco, New York City, Toronto, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, London, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Vienna, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Brussels, Berlin, Prague, Athens, Moscow, Istanbul, Jerusalem, Dubai, Sydney, Auckland, Cairo, Johannesburg, Mumbai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, and all of their landmark sites.

I love travel books, particularly those with big glossy pictures and enough historical and cultural facts to help me decide where on my mental list of places to visit I’ll position any spots that take my fancy. This book focuses on 30 cities which it says are sure to make a strong impressions all who visit them, with each having a rich architectural heritage or a spectacular natural environment and a uniqueness that sets them aside from other cities. It’s a tough call whittling down all the major cities of the world to a final group of this size and whilst I might have included a couple not covered here I do think this is a pretty good stab at it.

I’ve visited about a third of the cities listed here and each of them certainly impressed me. My personal favourites include Berlin, Venice, San Francisco and Sydney but in truth they all offered something slightly different and each was amazing in its own way. The format here is to provide some historical background, an birds eye map with places of interest picked out and also a detailed plan of a major structure synonymous with that location. It a short and punchy introduction to each city. And the photographs are wonderful, I particularly loved a view of Sydney, tracking a runner as he makes his way over the Harbour Bridge and showing a superb view of the vista below - absolutely stunning!

My sincere thanks to Quarto Publishing Group – Chartwell Books and NetGalley for supplying a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A delightful way to crank up your wanderlust!
Reading this during a pandemic was both a mistake (seeing lush photos of places you are not allowed to go? Totally sucks) and amusing (at least I can live vicariously through this book and add a couple places to my future travel plans).
Still something I would recommend to friends who want to learn more about some of the world's most desired vacation spots.
Big thanks to NetGalley & Quarto Publishing Group - Chartwell Books for my DRC.

A good book about the biggest cities in our world. It covers every continent and present the city in three two full pages (so six if you follow). The first presenting and overview of the city, the second is for information about the city, historic and cultural, and the third and last one is about the most significant/impressive/popular building of the city. Well done in every aspect, not ideal to read on a Ipad, even a big one, due to the two pages in one landscape orientation which make the text appear really really small and you constantly zoom in and out of it, but in paper it would be a much fun experience. Still worth in whatever the media!

This is a very attractive and informative book that gives a taster of thirty of the World’s Greatest cities. Each city is introduced first with a colour photograph, followed by a bird’s eye view of the city with the main features picked out and the statistics (population, population density, foundation date, surface are and location), then a double page about the city (a bit of history, tourist sites and current situation), finally a double page on one of the city’s most famous buildings or areas.
I have been to seventeen of the thirty featured cities – all of the European cities except Moscow – and it was interesting to read the stats and to see if I had missed any of the must-see sights. In particular, I was interested in new features since my visits. For those cities I had not visited, but would like to, Jerusalem, Toronto and San Francisco stood out.
The book has just enough on each city to whet your appetite – not enough to really plan a trip or find out what really makes each city tick. But then, I suppose, the book would have to be soooo much bigger.
I was a bit disappointed that the pages on the specially featured buildings were of drawings, rather than photographs. I understand that way probably made pointing out the specific features easier, but did make the buildings look rather dull. In particular Hagia Sofia (Istanbul), St Marco (Venice) and La Sagrada Familia (Barcelona). I love visiting places of worship around the world (even though I am agnostic), and felt a bit let down by the insipid (though surely accurate) depictions. There were often tiny photos on the side – but they were too small to convey the majesty of these wonderful buildings.
The book would make a lovely present, particularly for children wanting to know more about the world.

WHO IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE?

The World’s Greatest Cities is a book for all those who share a love of travel and exploration. Those who enjoy owning beautiful, high quality products will appreciate this tome. Anyone who has a yearning for knowledge of places beyond their reach or current understanding would benefit from the clear and concise information herein and the convincing visuals. For those who mourn the loss of the Cathedral Notre Dame, the edifice is included in this volume.

SYNOPSIS

Imagine for a moment that you can visit 30 of the most wondrous cities in the world all from the comfort of your own living room; well now you can. The World’s Greatest Cities reference guide from the stable of Chartwell Books, will provide you with such an experience. Whilst this book can never rival actually being there, the visuals provide you with a genuine sense of the neighborhood.

Each of the 30 cities has its own section complete with photos and descriptions. Each section frequently combines several of the following; topographical maps, satellite imagery, detailed architectural illustrations, inset images, the global and national location of each metropolis, and 2 dimensional virtual depictions of specific sites. In addition there are: numerous first person ground level photographs, day and night photographs of various venues, detailed building models including cut aways that reveal hidden secrets of the construction. These elements combine to present a vibrant, colorful, and exciting vision of the 30 metropoleis. The authors also include detailed information relating to each city, a key containing pertinent information relating to specifics about the area and the Global Positioning System (GPS) data.

CONCLUSION

The authors, illustrators, and photographers of World’s Greatest Cities have created a product beautiful to the eye and intriguing to the mind. It would sit comfortably next to other reference materials in any library.

If I had one concern, it is that I was disappointed with the Hagia Sofia Mosque depictions. Of all the pictures in the entire book, the images of the Mosque were of the most inferior quality, and in my opinion remain a missed opportunity.

Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed reading World’s Greatest Cities, I didn’t warm to it as much as I did to a similar publication from the same stable. Check out my review of World’s Greatest Wonders to see the differences. Nevertheless, it is a magnificent edition.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for a review here and on my blog Samwise Reviews. I really enjoyed this, from the art and the history and the landmarks to the variety and diversity of the cities chosen. This would be great for both an educational use or a fun coffee table book. Some cities I was already familiar with, but others I knew little about and all had a lot of interesting facts.

A gorgeous book with stunning photography that's sure to make you want to pack your bags, run out the door and travel the world. The mix between phots and text is very well done and it leaves you with a book to page through and imagine yourself in another city.

With an in-depth look at thirty cities worldwide, the World’s Greatest Cities is the perfect coffee table or waiting room read.

From New York City to Istanbul, many of civilization’s best cities are highlighted. Each city’s section contains a two-page iconic full-color photograph title page. In the following two pages, maps and photos highlight the city’s key facts, history and landmarks. A multi-page article explains significant facts about the city and additional tourist attractions are depicted. Finally, there is a two-page schematic of the city’s most popular historic site that included fun facts and interior photographs.

The text and especially the gorgeous illustrations will fuel your desire for travel. The World’s Greatest Cities is a great gift for the recently retired or any future world traveler. The hardest part is to decide where to go first. 4 stars!

WORLD’S GREATEST CITIES by the Editors of Chartwell Books is a fun, informative guide to some incredibly significant cities across the world. Between the pictures of cities, layouts, and building descriptions, this is a beautiful book for people looking to learn about a wide range of cities across the world. It is simple enough, too, that I can imagine when my kids get a bit older, they will enjoy having this as a way to see what the world looks like from their armchairs.

Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Chartwell Books for a chance to read this complimentary advanced reader’s copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Having visited about half of the cities listed and another quarter or third being on my bucket list, I can say it is an extremely interesting if heavy read.
It is full of information and you won't take everything in the first (or even second) time.
It is not a book to carry around on your travels but it teaches you about places you have been to and places you may be thinking about. It is like a documentary you can watch (read) over and over, or at your own pace.
Every city is described with its history and sights, and then focuses on one sight in particular, looking at a model of it with explanations. It's fascinating.

The World's Greatest Cities by the editors of Chartwell Books is a fascinating look at some of the major cities in every continent that have been able to grow, change and reinvent themselves while still maintaining their vitality, culture and unique flavor.

The photography in this book is stunning, and it was interesting to learn about the history of each of the cities and what makes them so unique, see maps showing their layouts, and also to learn of their must-see attractions.

This book is a treasure trove for travelers, and it made me want to book a trip immediately! Well done, Charter Books!! Very well done! This books earns 5 stars from me!!

My thanks to NetGalley and Charter Books for allowing me to read an ARC of this beautiful book in exchange for an unbiased review. All opinions expressed here are my own.

This title is a lovely resource for travelers both virtual and real.  Iconic locations from each featured city are highlighted.  For New York, it is the Empire State building.  For Beijing readers see the Forbidden City while in Venice, we view St. Mark's Basilica and in Paris, Notre Dame.  Then there is Christ the Redeemer in Rio, Tower Bridge in London and Senso-ji Temple in Tokyo.  If these locations intrigue you, this book will be a delight.

For each featured city, there is a spread with a map, key facts and then an essay.  This is followed by a detailed look at the featured building.  Throughout there are many photos of each of these amazing metropolises.

This book would be a great addition to the travel library of someone you know.  Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you, NetGalley, for a complimentary copy of this book!

I love traveling and have been to a few of the places described in the book! The photos in the book are amazing! I like that the authors added pictures and descriptions of other sights in the cities they describe, for example, the Hundertwasserhaus in Austria and the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. I think this is a great introduction to the different cities. This is a book that provides a great glimpse. For more information, the reader would certainly have to get travel guides specifically for the city he/she wants to learn more about or search the Internet. But that doesn't make the book less interesting. I was provided with a secured PDF for the book. I'm sure the photos and illustrations in the printed version of the book are even more amazing.

Much like the other title in this series (World'd Greatest Wonders), this is an absolutely stunning book.

The photography is colourful, engaging and gives you a real sense of each place. There are annotations and cross sections which are annotated with fantastic facts.

Its goes beyond other greatest city type guides as it offers some unique insights and is thorough.

Thanks to Quarto Publishing - Chartwell Books and Netgalley for the chance to read this advanced readers copy. I'll definitely be buying a copy for my school library.

This is a beautiful book for any coffee table. I don’t think reading it in electronic form looses some of the beauty of the book. The photographs and 3D and cut out images of various cities and buildings are not only fascinating with lots of facts but also beautiful illustrations which have actually made me even more excited to visit a number of these cities that I have yet to see and the ones I have already visited it has brought back so many happy memories. This is a book you can go back to again and again.

What a stunning book! Amazing parts of the world shown to explore, prefect timing as we are currently planning a European Adventure. It has given me places outside the box to explore and more information no the main attractions that we are planning on seeing. I would love to see and experience everything in this book. It is written with great tips and diagrams to show you where to see what.
