A deadly virus has left Beth alone and afraid. She must leave her home with almost no supplies when she is attacked by a neighbor. Will it be enough for one woman alone in the wilds? On a mission to find safety and a place to survive, Beth finds others in an unlikely trio struggling to find a new life. And they have more sinister motives. They're on a mission, too - to take whatever they can from whomever they find. They won't give up the chase until they get what they want. And they want everything."
First of all, I enjoy reading a novel that teaches/re-educates me. I was thrilled to see holistic-herbal medicinal concoctions.
The story. The novel centers around a 'event;, a deadly virus. The reader will be introduced to Beth, Sarah, Brian, Spike and Jessie the dog. Then we meet evil. Bobby. A side character Tamara is awesome...no spoilers here.
From there we go on a thrill ride. For a first novel I am impressed. It is well-written and very thorough (including research). I appreciate the fact that there are strong female characters AND men who are on the opposite side of everything (the cop and the killer).
Excellent read. I definitely will recommend this book. Enjoy!
I like a story with real people and a believable story line. No super heroes in this story. No bumbling idiots either. Strong characters that you can root for. Interesting geographical setting for the tale, the Appalachian Trail, which runs through my area in the Laurel Highlands. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
This book tends to be very grim and often difficult to read. I like Beth who is a good person trying her best to survive and to care for a badly treated girl. It made no sense to me that after one of the party is taken by some very bad guys, the two people that are capable of rescuing her take several days to get to it. A lot of terrible can happen in four days. There are also a lot of editing issues, especially with respect to sentence structure and punctuation. I will probably try the next book to see what happens.
This book was remarkably well written for a debut novel. The characters are likeable, the bad guys despicable and the storyline is engaging and realistic. I stayed up way too late on a work night just to find out what would happen next and I wasn't disappointed. I highly recommend this book and I hope that Ms Broadley enjoys all the success that she deserves as an author. She may certainly count me among her fans.
The characters are real and I became invested in their situation, assessing my survival skills as if I were with them. So much so that when the story stopped without a satisfactory ending, I immediately had to start searching for the next installment. I'm hooked!
One of the best “event” novels I’ve read. I hope the novels that follow are as good. The Event has happened. The survivors aren’t trendy or stereotypes. The action is varied, and though some outcomes are usual, the majority are good. Bring on the next one. Oh, this novel was so good that I loafed @nd read it in one day.
Great read! Riveting, with characters who act like real people in a horrendous situation. No super-heroes or miraculous light at the end of the tunnel. If COVID had turned out to be worse, this could easily have happened (and could yet with variants or new strains). Frightening, yet hopeful, as people try to do the best they can in a no-win situation. With four more books to go, my summer reading list awaits. Enjoy!
A good apocalypse is always a decent read and this one is absolutely that. There isn’t a great many words used on causation (virus), and not an overemphasis on details of the evil things humanity will do. The story balances everything very nicely and I reached the end far too soon. Darn it what an awesome cliffhanger!
The characters in this apocalyptic story are so intricate and well defined. This is an action packed, edge of your seat thriller that keeps going right up to the very last page!
An unlikely band of survivors travel towards what they hope will be safety. Of course, fate has other ideas, but the intrepid group persists. What will happen next?
I've been looking for something new and interesting in the genre and this book was a wonderful surprise. Complex characters, great pacing, and well written, it's a welcome diversion from what I usually come across. Highly recommended.
Can a convict be trusted not to cause two women harm as they navigate a society of lawlessneTss? When the world of decency collapse d it turned to be open season on unprotected women and children. This is intense.
A good well thought of interesting end of the world adventure! I did really enjoy this new to me writers work! Good ideas & characters, a good fast action fun read! I will look for lore by this writer!
A simple apocalypse book that engaged !e from the start. Nothing fancy, just some very good story telling, rounded out characters with solid action and adventure. I will be picking up the next book.
What a roller coaster of a ride! Non stop action. Great developers of characters from the innocent to the truly evil. Book grabs you from page one to the end, but as you know it ends on a cliffhanger. But I got book 2 before, so I can keep reading.
Wow! Excellent read! This is my first trip with this author, but certainly not my last, in fact my next book is the 2nd in this series. Right now I am off to sign up on her 2 facebook pages.
A very solid first effort on the author's part, and I will be eagerly awaiting the next book.
We meet... Beth, a 48 yr old woman, who lost her husband and daughter to a deadly virus. Sarah, a 16 yr old girl, who was in the abusive hands of a group of degenerates. Brian, an ex-con with a squishy interior. Spike, a used-to-be cop, hunting the foul individuals who killed his wife and sons. Along the way we meet other individuals, good and bad, as these people travel the Appalachian Trail south.
I liked the fact that our heroine, Beth, was NOT a prepper and had to learn the how-to's as she went. She did have EMT training and knowledge of herbal remedies and I enjoyed learning a few new things as I read.
I have to say I really appreciated how the author gave us bits and pieces of knowledge, without being too pedantic about it. I have read 6 other apocalyptic books in the past 2 weeks where the author was more concerned with passing along knowledge, rather than entertaining her readers. There's nothing wrong with that BUT I read to escape, and if I have to plow through pages and pages of how-to it gets old fast. So, the fact this author balanced that aspect well was fantastic!
Brian was a great character who is in no way sorry for having been jailed, as he'd been avenging his sister. He's a strong hero with a soft heart and "killer" skills.
***SPOILERS***
I have to say I only had 1 real issue with this story, and that was at the very end, when Sarah is taken by the bad guys. Beth asks Brian to go after her and he says he'll get her back. But, no. He waits for 4 days until Beth comes around from her injuries because he wouldn't leave her until he knew she'd be okay. So, in the meantime, this poor girl who has already been through hell has no one going after her. This makes no sense to me, and if I were Beth and came around to consciousness 4 days later I'd kill Brian for not having gone for the girl immediately.
So, this book does end on somewhat of a cliffhanger, which I, straight up, do not like. But, for a first attempt I thought the author did an awesome job. I'm hoping the next book will detail the virus a bit more so we have a better idea of what humanity has gone through.

I loved this, finished it in hours since I couldn't put it down. I found the Characters to be very relatable, caught myself gasping out loud at times. Yep, cant wait to read the next one. Miss Nancy, fantastic job!
Love & vengeance. A plague decimates civilization.
A man, Two women and a dog, what’s not to love? Post plague, civilization rapidly deteriorates into a land of blood sweat and tears. Horrid men takeover the reminents of society. Survivors exist with using their wits, & the “old ways”. Green & white pine tea, Fiddlehead ferns, elderberries, dandelion greens and flowers, save more than one soul. The saga continues……
Great story, well written, fast read. The author is very good at telling the story, there are a lot of characters, in a lot of different situations. But the story is so well told that it's easy to keep up. No turning back to figure out who someone is. The AT is well portrayed as the challenge it is, not as a simple walk down a path in the woods as it is in many other books.
Trail of Misery is hard hitting and in your face with the bloody brutality of life after the Event. Feeling like she had lost everything, Beth heads out alone in search of warmer weather. Along the way she meets her new family, all the while on the run from a gang of evil the likes of which nightmares are made. Book 2 can’t come soon enough!
was concerned from some reviews there would be to much filler but found it was a good read the details helped keep the focus on how it was living in a time of total anarchy. So brace yourself for a ride through horror and pain as the characters just survive. Waiting for the next book.
I love the constant evolution of the characters. They are all deeply damaged in their own ways and the way they rise and fall through the text is like a wonderful dance. The trust\distrust, self loathing\self worth all the inner struggles make each character so very loved it despised. Great story, N.A. Broadley Thank you!
